The Climate Quilt Campaign

November 16, 2009 8:00 AM

Students from three New York City schools stopped by “Good Morning America” this morning to tell co-anchor Sam Champion about the Climate Quilt Campaign.

The goal of this international initiative is to give each child an opportunity to share his or her promise to help the environment with communities and global leaders around the world.

Each patch of the quilt represents that child’s pledge to improve the environment. All of the patches are made from recycled material.

Ten schools in the United States and eight schools around the world have submitted patches, according to the campaign.  So far there are more than 2,500 patches that will be sewn together to make one quilt.  The quilt will be unveiled in April at the United Nations in New York City to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day.

A portion of the quilt is already hanging in Copenhagen in hopes that world leaders will see each individual pledge and realize how important environmental issues are to children.

The Climate Quilt Campaign began at New York City’s PS3 during Climate Week in September 2009.  The campaign launched with help from Habitat Heroes and Green Schools Alliance.
