Competition by Legislation

Yesterday, Wal-Mart endorsed Obama’s proposal to force companies to provide health insurance.
Reason’s Peter Suderman points out that when a corporation announces support of government action, it’s wise to suspect that the goal is not to serve the public, but to gain a competitive advantage:
“Why would Wal-Mart do this? In part, because it's a good PR move…But it's also a good from a competitive standpoint. Wal-Mart, the nation's largest employer, can afford the costs imposed by an employer mandate. Smaller competitors are likely to find it harder.”

Come on John,
Don't let those nitwits at ABC keep you from getting the message out that Canadian health care amounts to the Canadian government determining who will be in pain, who will get medication, who will live, AND who won't. AND THAT IS WHAT WE WILL GET FROM OBAMA AND THE DEMOCRAT JERKS. I've never before considered leaving my Country, and I don't know where I will go, but I'm begining to research alternatives. OBAMA WILL DESTROY AMERICA IF HE GETS HIS WAY.

There's more to Wal-Mart's incentive. They're siding with the Service Employees Union. The very union they constantly work so hard to keep out of their stores. By siding with them on this issue, they believe they can take away an incentive for their employees from organizing.
