House Actually Reads Bill; Congratulates Themselves
07/29/2009 10:22 AM
Look, mommy, look!
What a good boy I am!
Last week the Democrats decided that, if they're going to try to sell this plan to their constituents, they need to have a better sense of what it says, line by line.
Wow, they're actually going to read their own bill! The Washington Post story implies that they will read it not to see if it's a good idea, but to help them "sell" it to voters. And they sound so proud!
"No one's going to say we haven't read the bill," said Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland
"Nobody can say we haven't read it," said Rep. Lynn Woolsey of California, just minutes later.
…Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (Ohio) took page after page of notes on a legal pad, later showing reporters the proof of his diligence.
On one hand, it's tempting to count this as good news, considering how often Congress does not read its own bills, but on the other hand...they sound a bit like students wanting a pat on the back for doing homework that was already required of them.
I feel safer when legislatures are not in session. Then law makers neither read bills nor pass them.

I can't decide what is more pathtic. That these people don't read the bills or that we put them in office in the first place.

Maybe they should be tested for comprehension and retention, as well.

John,
Let me get this right, the Dems hear our complaint that they did not read the bills they are dealing with, they admit they read them now but that is not what you want? Forgive me if I find you snotty and kind of a bully. This does not help the debat and frankly I think you can be counted as one of those people who want this to fail so Mr Obama fails. Sure does sound like you need to find a new way to keep the brew haha going.

perhaps if they would read every bill that they propose, it would tie them up enough that they didn't have as much time to come up with new bill to read. plus it would keep them out of trouble such as affairs and the like.

Bonnie, I think you're not helping the debate with your snotty-sounding comment. John has an excellent point that there's a difference between reading something so that you can see if it's a good idea and reading something after you've already decided it's a good idea.
What the voters wanted was the former, not the latter.

Plus Bonnie, they make a big deal about doing their job, and they had to be goated into it by a republican senator, also anyone with a wit of common sense knows it will be damned near the last time the read an entire proposal.

Lets make sure they must use the same insurance the American people will use. That should put extra teeth in this bill.

"I feel safer when legislatures are not in session. Then law makers neither read bills nor pass them."
Exactly! It's sad but true that typically the best our congress can do is nothing.

Bonnie Kimberly...Of course, it's what we all want, expect and demand of those we elect to these high offices. He's merely pointing out that they shouldn't fall all over themselves for doing exactly what they should be doing in the first place. Definitely a case of you reading way, way too much into his piece.

We'd all be better off if this Congress went on Summer Recess and NEVER came back. It's time to clean House, (and the Senate), in 2010. Get excited, get involved and 'be the change you want to see'. Vote 'em all out; You'll be doing yourself and the entire country a huge favor.

Well, I've read it. HR 3200. You can download it from several Government websites.
I'm particularly concerned with pages 425-430 which compel Americans over the age of 65 to receive mandatory "end-of-life" counseling from a State-appointed practitioner every five years -- or more often if the senior is sick or in a nursing home.
Despite what Obama says, THAT'S MORBID!!!

Reading it only a small fraction of the challenge. Let's
see if they can comprehend it.

President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Henry Waxman, and Charlie Rangel are in dire need of a GOOD EAR/NOSE & THROAT SPECIALIST. They are not listening to the people they represent, nor to experts in the medical profession (please do not site the AMA which has many fewer doctor members than the president would like for us to believe!) CAN THEY NOT HEAR, or is this JUST A POWER GRAB??
Fear that President Obama believed his press that he acquired during his campaign --- BUT, HE IS NOT THE SECOND COMING!!
Someone on his staff needs to remind him of a basic American promise: THAT AMERICANS ARE PROMISED LIFE, REPEAT LIFE, LIBERTY, AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS!
Some of the teachings Obama may have picked up from his left leaning profs need to be left in the classroom.
Why has he shied away from:
* TORT REFORM? (That would save billions)
* Selling health insurance across state borders? (That would cause increased competition and save billions of taxpayer dollars)
* Clean up fraud, waste, and abuse from MEDICARE & MEDICAID? (This would include ceasing the give aways of 'scooters from the SCOOTER STORE') Why in the world should we trust the government to administer nation wide health care when they cannot even clean up the current mess of fraud and waste??
*Why is there main cost savings centered on the elderly with their IMAC (deciding who lives and dies), and counseling on death? A growing number of Americans have living wills, but we do not need Obama and the Mrs. telling us what we should do and when we should 'check out'.
* Where are the initiatives for more research to CURE diseases like cancer, autism, diabetes, Parkinson’s, and MS? They made a real big deal on stem cell research – well, when are they going to start researching?? Or, will completing a living will and ‘checking out’ on OBAMACARE’s timetable be national policy?
* Why can the president and members of Congress not have the decency to at least read the laws they are attempting to cram down the throats of the citizens (i.e., President Obama's comments on July 22, and John Conyer's comments on July 27)? They might just learn something. (THEY ARE REALLY NOT CONFIDENCE BUILDERS!)
President Obama has -- in my opinion -- grossly overestimated his sway over America. When one assumes they have the authority to make life and death calls on their citizens they are sworn to protect, then there is a BIG PROBLEM.
PRESIDENT OBAMA HAS A BIG PROBLEM!!

If Stossel had any credentials as a political commentator he woud already know that the legislative process involves committee work, just like any large organization. Its only after the proposals get out of committee that they are read by the larger body. Next time stick to what you do best: Goofy little stories on 20/20. Stay away from trying to comment on matters that are apparently above your head.

As each day goes by, the House Democratic leadership -- in particular -- and President Obama lose more and more credibility! Obama now modifies his pitch depending upon who he is speaking to.
It is becoming insulting to hear Pelosi, Waxman, Rangel, Reid, and Obama tell us what we can have and why we have to have their PILLS!
WOW! We made a BIG BAD MISTAKE IN NOVEMBER 2008! Cannot wait to help change that in November 2010!!

I just finished up pages 425 - 430 and your right that's scary stuff, perhaps G. Orwell was a profit, just 25 years off. Who would have though big brother would turn out to be a brother?

I think there should be a mandatory quiz following the reading assignment. Let's make sure they really read it.

If everybody will have health insurance, can we get rid of some of the redundant insurance americans are forced to carry. There are insurance policies that businesses and indivdiuals must carry that carry heavy premiums due to medical payment exposure. We carry workers comp insurance for work injuries; automobile insurance for auto accidents; premises liability for injuries on the premises; general liability insurance; boat insurance. Will our premiums be going down. At least if they reduced our premiums responsilbe americans might actually gain a benefit from the big medical experiment.
