Government Knows Best

When Cirila Baltazar Cruz gave birth to a baby girl in a hospital in Pascagoula, Miss., she didn’t realize her inability to speak English would get her baby taken away from her.
Time magazine reports that Baltazar Cruz, an Oaxacan Indian, speaks only Chatino, an obscure language, barely any Spanish and no English. Apparently that makes her an unfit mother.
(T)he hospital called the state Department of Human Services (DHS), which ruled that Baltazar Cruz was an unfit mother in part because her lack of English "placed her unborn child in danger and will place the baby in danger in the future"...
(A) Jackson County judge gave the infant to a couple…
One of DHS's apparent fears is that an infant isn't safe in a home where the mother can articulate a 911 call solely in a language spoken only by some 50,000 Oaxacan Indians.
Oh please. Baltazar Cruz’s lawyer points out that for more than a century, children have been raised safely by parents who arrived at Ellis Island unable to speak a word of English. Someone should tell these judges and bureaucrats – in plain English -- that the ability to speak a language doesn’t make you a good mother.

So we discriminate against a mother who doesn't speak only Spanish?

And this is the same goverment that wants to go into the health care business! Imagine the decisions they will make regarding medical procedures! unbelievable concept the democrats have over controlling everyones life!

Liberals are so well known for an overwhelming desire to build fences on the borders to keep non-english speaking people out... (rolling my eyes)

If anyone finds ANYTHING about the government that makes sense anymore, please let me know! http://clearcloudycarol.blogspot.com/

Jan, I think you're missing the point. Even if you believe that your guys wouldn't be as tyrannical, if only you could get them elected; the fact is, this is what we get in a democracy. For every action and program that you support, dozens of actions and programs which you do NOT support become part of the same government. Government is incompetent, and incapable of doing anything without using force.

Yeah....but you forgot a key question that should have been asked, "Was she an illegal immigrant". Because if she was Conservatives would have no problem with the government did.

Who at the hospital called? They should be fired for poor judgement or stupidity.

I bet handicapped parents are going to be in for quite a surprise.

Well, I guess since government is incompetent, we had better get out of Iraq and Afghanistan immediately, SnowDog. Probably shouldn't build or repair any more highways or railways either. Declare all laws null and void since they are government generated and once you get done dismantling the federal government, you'll look around and see state and local government as inhibiting your freedom.
I sort of think that is the point. By the way, at what point does it become anarchy?

I'm a conservative, and yes, I'd have a problem with taking a child away from an illegal immigrant.
What you said was bigoted, thoughtless, and ignorant. Why not let conservatives speak for themselves?

Has it really been established that forms of government other than democracy never devolve into tyranny?
Posted by: JohnJ | Aug 30, 2009 10:57:50 AM
This same government lets children stay in the care of drug addicts, prostitutes, homeless street people (I'm not talking about homeless people in shelters, but the crazies living in boxes under bridges). It is extremely difficult to separate unfit mothers from children in this country if there is a legitimate reason, but it seems that it can be done at the drop of a hat for some asinine reason.

This shouldn't be a left-right issue. So what if she is an illegal? Maybe she should be deported, but having the child removed by force because she can't speak English? Conservatives believe in families, only Liberals seem to believe that the Government is, and should be, the ultimate nanny.

Jan, since government threatens someone with violence, with everything it does, then it should only do those things where you would want someone threatened with violence.
So I agree: it needs to stop doing all of those things you mentioned, and for those things left, replace the taxes with user fees.

gander - Not that it matters: not Spanish but Chatino, and even if it was Latvian, this still is so obviously a wrong move from government, on "our the people's" behalf, that its wrongness transcends language and politics.
jan - impertinent, beyond irrelevant, even

Don't Conservatives support "english only" laws. Don't conservatives support deportation of illegal immigrants? Isn't the child an American since she was born in this country while the mother is not (presuming). I don't know all the particulars of this case and neither do any of you....but separating mother and child because the mother is illegal and the child is not is not an isolated case.....

This is not a political argument. Nobody should have their child taken away from them because of the language they speak. I am very political myself but sometimes a little common sense does the trick.

We DON'T have a democracy, we have a republic. At least we should have a republic... it's an important distinction that needs to be made. Look up the definitions of both.
As for the contents of the article, people in government need to quit meddling just because they don't like something!

Supporting the deportation of illegal immigrants is the same thing as taking their children away?
Dude, you have mental issues. Seek help.

Distinguishing between the two is fine, but the problem, as you noted, is that we have neither.
