Justice Thomas Speaks Out
September 28, 2007 9:44 AM
The long-awaited memoirs of Justice Clarence Thomas will be released Monday, and, for those of you who haven’t seen posts by Mark Obbie, Tony Mauro and Howard Bashman, I’ve done a series of wide-ranging interviews with him in several different locations (and states), as well as an extensive interview with his wife, Virginia. But I can’t say anything more than that until Sunday night.
So…until then, all I can say (having studied the confidentiality agreement, its pretty harsh penalties and wanting to stay in good standing with my bosses and the New York bar) is to be on the lookout Sunday night for my substantial dot com piece, which will be posted in several parts on ABCNEWS.com. (You know the old saying: You can take the journalist out of print, but you can’t take print out of journalist…)
Then, starting Monday morning with Good Morning America, my pieces on Justice Thomas will begin airing on ABC News. We will have a full report on all our platforms: Good Morning America, World News Tonight and a series of lengthy and revealing segments on Nightline, which of course is the perfect place for a closer look at one the most complex, compelling, maligned and misunderstood figures in modern history.
I’ve covered the Court and Justice Thomas for 13 years now, and I can tell you this is something you will not, under any circumstances, want to miss. If you can’t catch them all, Tivo them (I’ll have to get my kids to do it, but surely you guys are more technologically adept). I also will be blogging on this throughout the weeks to come. Thomas has much to say, and there will be much to discuss.

THIS IS ONE JUSTICE FROM WHOM I WANT TO HEAR ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. I BELIEVED ANITA HILL THEN AND I BELIEVE HER NOW AND I GIVE HER ALL THE RESPECT IN THE WORLD FOR STANDING UP TO HIM.

Shirley, I'm with you. He wanted the job more than he ever wanted justice. What a fake, but of course any self respecting African American would never call himself a republican in this day and age.
His party wants to do away with the very affirmative action that got him where he is. Unflipping believable...

So how does Mr. Thomas explain Anita Hill (and others) ?

Keep up the great work, Jan! You're undoubtedly the finest SCOTUS reporter out there. Supreme Conflict is a far superior read to Toobin's the Nine. Looking forward to the day when you take over for Totenberg.

And darn good advertising it is. Looking forward to it.

Clarence Thomas was accepted in one of the most prestigious law schools in the world.....and you actually think that affirmative action had nothing to do with it? Where's your common sense? At least genaral Colin Powell admitted he benefited from AF.....Get one thing straight buddy: Affirmative Action is not designed for those who don't qualify for the job, it's designed to off set the systemic racism in this country.....understand?

I remember that man. When I was just 20 years old, and living in San Diego, I recall some of his positions he had taken, when he was head of the EEOC. That man was a dismal failure in that capacity, in that he failed, or more specifically, would not, enforce the age discrimination laws of this nation. He would not enforce the EEOC laws he had sworn to uphold. That, my good people, constitute gross negligence: the failure to do what you were elected/paid to do.
So when he was appointed to the Supreme Court, I knew prior to his arrival, that he would be a terrible justice. It and I, turned o ut to be right.
That man, when he looks back on his career, should be ashamed of himself.
I have always wondered, how could he look himself in the mirror?......

The pontification that "marijuana has no medicinal value", while a 19 year old in San Francisco was upchucking his guts everything 15 minutes without it, will be the hallmark of the Thomas incursions into non science, corrupting the scientific linkage between California and the Federal government systems. The Thomas presence on the Supreme Court is a disgrace to scienific based civilizations throughout history. He is an example of the devestation to fuctionality due to The Axiom of Unintended Consequences, and the meddling of religious people in US politics.

I definitely will not buy his book,,,,,
but I am interested to know what he or his ghost writers have to say about his early era in San Diego and his dismal performance on the highest bench......
What could he possibly say, other than I am a horrible judge...?

Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia are two of the worst Justices of the last 100 years. They have consistently undermined civil rights, civil liberties, democratic institutions, the Constitution, and the rule of law. They are extreme right wing, conservative, religious fanatic, biased ideologues who should never have gotten onto the Supreme Court in the first place. Their opinions are partisan, poorly written, and often lack any logic. The sooner those two leave the bench, the better of this country will be. IMPEACH THOMAS AND SCALIA NOW!!!

Clarence is known for his lack of Legal expertise.
1)What you and he fails to comprehend, is that in regards to abortions, both the controller of the egg and the donor of the sperm has the responsibility to prevent the contact of the sperm to the egg. Regardless of how they prevent it, if the sperm touches the egg, then BOTH of them ceases to have the right to decide whether they will have a baby: they now have a responsibility. Period. To say that the women ( for that matter, a man) have the right to terminate a child is moot, when every child in America, knows what happens when those biological chemicals connect.
You can't have it both ways....
Pick one and stick with it.

Thomas, J., will be remembered by history as one of the greatest justices of all time. His principled, consistent opinions are firmly grounded in the text of the constitution and in the traditions of American law and culture. Those who deride the Justice either have not read him or have not understood what they read. With respect to affirmative action and race-relations, I will only say this: if you wish to end racial discrimination, do not discriminate based on race. Affirmative action is a logically inconsistent, indeed incoherent, doctrine. So long as we have affirmative action, and so long as we have those who perpetuate and propagate it, we will never achieve the color-blind society which MLK dreamed for us and for our children.

Thomas took a beating during the hearing and came out way ahead. the only reason you people don't like him is he was nominated by a Republican and is one. I do not always agree with his positions, but at least he has a mind of his own and is not afraid to use it, and yes, I would like to purchase his book; without Lincoln and the civil war his nomination would not of been possible

After reading up on all things Anita Hill, after the fact, I am convinced this man should not be on this court nor honored by having his book purchased. Sad times.

I don't like Justice Thomas' "style" during oral arguments, but his substance is great. He is an explary role model for black men. Samuel G. is right on in his post above.

To be black is to have guts in this world and Justice Thomas proved just that. He had the guts to face Congress and Anita Hill, just like he had the guts to dare the black community at a time where there was so much negativity going around to fail. To fail in a society were excel in school mean you are a "white want a be". His book is perfect evidence that he has recover from character assassination, and dare to make a difference. Bravo to you Mr. Thomas.

Clarence Thomas is an inspiration because he refused to compromise and give up when being subjected to weeks of non-stop slander. For 10 years Anita Hill told no one about these charges against Thomas, and when she finally did talk, she offered no proof or witnesses to support her allegations. Why is that?

The amazing thing about modern and bitter post-feminist American women in getneral is that they tend to throw away every good thing about a man because of an act of sexual impropriety. If women were to be judged by the standard they put on men, they would not survive it. Anita Hill was a coward as I see it. She waited 10 years to exact her vengeance. Just like a woaman. Funny, in the 80's women cried unfair, to the good 'ol boys clubs everywhere. Now they have so many womens only clubs. You don't hear them complaining about it. Kudo's to Justice Thomas for standing up to this Anita Speil. BTY where the hell is she?

He needs to go back to being silent.
Clarence is a woman abuser, who does NOT
deserve to be on the Court. He does NOT
represent American ideals!

The point in the court is to have different ideas so that all areas are considered when deciding a case. Converstion and exchange guarantee that justice will be served. Justice Clarence Thomas is impressive by any means. He was appointed to the court and he withstood the scrutiny of millions. Who could do that and be left standing? If we continue to attack our own, then who will stand and be heard when the cost is so high? We are turning into a country that is loosing "The Dream". It is not safe to stand up and be heard. That is a shame. I am personally tired of all of the accusation being hurlted by those involved in service. The question should be what have I done to "give something back" to our oun society and country. It shouldn't be so much about "what do I get". WHat happened to service? Sometimes I just want to say SHUT UP to all of those that have the "what is in it for me" attitude. Shut up and serve. Do something for someone else. And leave Justice Thomas alone. He is serving with honor and dignity and truth. He has the right to his opinion because of MLK and Sojurner Truth and Frederick Douglas and because of the Tuskeegee Airmen and because Of Abraham Lincoln and because of JFK and because of his beloved Grandfather. If you want to complain, serve first then you should be heard. Stop whinning and being a spoiled brat in this great country and this great era. There is too much to be done. Leave this man alone to do his job and live his life of service.

"This is something you will not, under any circumstances, want to miss . . . "'
"One [of] the most complex, compelling, maligned and misunderstood figures in modern history."
Puh-lease, spare us! I did watch, and Justice Thomas has nothing new to say. ABC has been duped into promoting his book through a reporter who is increasingly becoming a darling of the conservative wing of the Court.
I was particularly struck by the ABC report containing references to Anita Hill being "mediocre" and a "tool" of the left. C'mon, Justice Thomas and Ms. Crawford Greenburg. Give it a rest.

Poor Justice Thomas who's had to suffer the sad consequences flowing from his "15 cent Yale law degree" all these years. The man is nauseating and Greenburg is a gullible dope to describe him as "misunderstood." People are smarter than she assumes. That he is universally disprespected and disliked is because he actually is well understood. His decisions, while well written by top law school grads, are simple parroting of Scalia's crackpot, inconsistent legal theories. Thomas' will be remembered in history not for his legal skill but as the greatest hypocrit.
