Palin: Withdraw "for your country"

September 26, 2008 8:25 AM

Syndicated conservative columnist Kathleen Parker, who once described Sarah Palin's candidacy as a "bright light," now is calling on her to withdraw. She is the first prominent conservative to stake out that position--bringing to mind Bill Kristol's early pronouncement in 2005 that he was "disappointed, depressed and demoralized" over the Harriet Miers nomination.

In a column titled "The Palin Problem," Parker says Palin's recent "painful" interviews with Gibson, Hannity and Couric show she is "clearly out of her league" and that "we'd all be guffawing" if she were a man.

"No one hates saying that more than I do. Like so many women, I've been pulling for Palin, wishing her the best, hoping she will perform brilliantly," Parker writes. "I've also noticed that I watch her interviews with the held breath of an anxious parent, my finger poised over the mute button in case it gets too painful. Unfortunately, it often does. My cringe reflex is exhausted."

Palin, she writes, filibusters and fills the space with deadwood. "Cut the verbiage and there's not much content there," Parker concludes. And then she provides an example--an exchange with Sean Hannity.

Bottom line:

"Only Palin can save McCain, her party and the country she loves. She can bow out for personal reasons, perhaps because she wants to spend more time with her newborn. No one would criticize a mother who puts her family first," Parker writes.

"Do it for your country."

I agree totally, but not on the grounds of caring for her family. In the current world situation we need a VP who can step into the office and take control. Palin cannot even answer simply questions. No wonder the campaign is sheilding her.

Look, enough talk about Sarah Palin... John McCain is destroying the election process and the economy at the same time.

If he wants to play maverick Cindy should get him some action figures, but we need real leaders not another cowboy.

Joe Biden was right, mavericks don't usually know much. Clearly.

I can't agree more. I am glad that a republican is finally saying it. I think everyone is supporting her for the good of the 'party'. Nobody wanted to admit what a mistake her nomination is. She makes me cringe. How many other people are out there who feel the same way, but just don't want to admit it?

oops!!!!
At least we still have some women who can think. For some reason I thought Palin was the best ... this country can produce when it comes for educated woman.

Get the freak show over with already. Pull her plug. Power her down. Ship her back.

While you're at it, get McCain to withdraw as well.

I think this Kathleen Parker conclusion sums it up:

"If BS were currency, Palin could bail out Wall Street herself. "

Palin, go home.

I disagree with Kathleen Parker on just about every major issue. But in calling for Sarah Palin's withdrawal, Kathleen Parker retains her credibility. Regardless of what happens, she will leave this election with her head held high. Sarah Palin's overwhelming incompetence would literally imperil our nation if she were to ascend to the Presidency. And anyone who fails to acknowledge this is putting a juvenile sense of short term victory ahead of the greater well being of America. In concrete, sober, literal terms, it is anti-American to wish that Sarah Palin be one heartbeat away from the Presidency.

Parker is a moron.

Palin might have to get use to the interviews but she is brilliant and is perfect for the job.

Look at Biden, he effs up all the time. Palin is just being careful. I love watching her interviewed.

Dem for McCain/Palin

Get over it. Palin is the next VP of the United States. Why is there so much negative attention on Palin. Seems like the media does not want a "republican" woman in office. Remember she has MORE executive experience than Barak Obama. Whether it was a state with 100 or 10,000,000 people, she actually ran a government. How bout Obama?????

What a load of crap! It was the Republican right wing's constant need to make cultural issues the center of every election. So old washed up McCain plays another game and picks their poster child. Now why is everyone so surprised that she can not perform at this level? They gave her no prep, she had no chance to get up to speed and she was not ready. Keep her on the ticket, voters need to see the REAL John McCain.

JOE V show some respect for your country and just be honest... Palin is a fool... hate to say it and McCain is acting like a spoiled child.

"So what if a small school in the South spent 5.5 million to get ready for a debate. I don't want to come and I'm rich. Nothing effects me!!"

Grow up McCain.

Palin = SCARY!!!

ElodieStClair-I couldn't agree with you more. I have long felt that any public figure that continued to support the Palin nomination and McCain ticket will have lost all sense of credibility and should be ashamed of their political pandering.I understand the politics of this campaign that Obama is running against McCain, but this is not an ordinary election. It was bad enough that Palin held such extreme views, but now we know that she sees incapable of any in depth understanding and communication of those very views. I have always considered myself capable of objective analysis of both sides of an issue, but I am so disillusioned with any politician that does not have the integrity and love of their country to stand up for their country and say what is so painfully obvious - that it is incomprehensible and unacceptable to support a ticket that has a person so obviously unqualified to be one 72 year old, cancer prone heartbeat away from the presidency.

Palin is so dumb that i cannot believe.
She gives the same general answer to different questions.
She has a train wreck of a family life.
I agree that she should withdraw for the good of the country.

Palin has more experience than OBAMA!!!! You couldn't get a job at McDonalds and become district manager after 143 days of experience. Those are the total working days Obama had in the Senate. Wait, my bad, he can do anything....!

Posted by: Joe V | Sep 26, 2008 8:56:13 AM

Joe, if you have to keep qualifying her experience with the utterly meaningless word "executive", then you know it is lacking. Barack Obama graduated from Columbia University. Went to Harvard Law. Was the head of the Law Review. Graduated magna cum laude from the top university on the planet. He immediately went to work in politics, helping people in need. He was a professor of Constitutional law at the ultra-prestigious University of Chicago. And he's a United States Senator. The guy is a soaring intellect. And he has dedicated his entire adult life to a rigorous scholarship of Constitutional law, American law- to the definition and meaning and materiality of this great nation. His entire adult life has been both a practical and academic study of the workings of America.

Sarah Palin? As recently as a year ago, she admitted in an interview to never having thought seriously about American foreign policy. And five years ago, her greatest achievement of leadership was being head of the Wasilla Christmas Decorations Committee. She very literally has thought less about American policy than most kids who come to DC for the summer page program. This is very literally true.

She is dangerously unqualified to hold any major American office.

Palin is an anchor for the sinking McCain ship...

Posted by: Mike | Sep 26, 2008 8:57:39 AM

No wonder there is some much negative talk about Palin; this is par for the course for the next VP and President of the United States.....And oh yea, it takes a woman to clean a messy house!!!I perdict she will leave Washinton a better place!!! I can't wait to see this!!!!!Ha! Ha!

Kathleen Parker - thank you so much.
Whoever is truly behind the stunt of nominating Sarah Palin should be prosecuted as a terrorist - someone who is trying to make this nation fail.
