It's a real distraction when your daughters are crying over a football game. It means you have to be a responsible adult -- no tears, limited profanity – and try to keep their focus on all that is good.
And there was plenty of good in 2008.
The Tide continued its magical season today with great three quarters against Florida. But, in the end, the Gators--and especially Tim Tebow--proved they earned their hype.
They dominated the fourth quarter, and they deserve to be SEC Champions. I look forward to watching them whip OU and bring yet another national championship home to the best conference in the country.
As for Alabama, y'all know I've been proud of our team. But there's an old saying in sports that you really fall in love with a team in defeat.
And I loved the way Alabama fought today, despite our devastating loss. (And don;t get me wrong. It was devastating.)
After 12 and three-quarter games, our young team, which lost six games
last year and began this year unheralded, unranked and unappreciated, was on the verge of playing for a National Championship. They couldn't hold off
the Gators, but they went down fighting.
I loved Julio Jones, our star true freshman, making big-time plays. I loved
Glen Coffee running behind our big O-line and through some gaping holes, right down the Gators' throats for three quarters. And I loved our senior quarterback, John Parker Wilson, standing tall in the pocket.
Most of all, though, I loved one unnoticed play at the end of the game. It was a play not by Jones or Coffee or Wilson or Terrence Cody or any of our heralded players, but by Mike Johnson, the junior offensive guard who battled so hard in the trenches all day and, for that matter, all season.
On Bama's last offensive play, Wilson's desperate pass was intercepted by Florida, ending any chance the Tide had for a miracle comeback. Johnson was blocking on the play, and he somehow lost his helmet.
But when he saw the pass get picked off--with no helmet on, the game now hopelessly lost and absolutely nothing to gain--Johnson charged toward the Florida player and tried to make the tackle anyway, his lack of headgear be damned.
That's selfless sacrifice. That's Alabama football.
I love this team. Roll Tide Roll.

You are good sport Jan, a good fan, and by all measures a great mom.
When you were following the Tide in your youth from rural Alabama (I read up on you at wiki)I was following them with my college football coach dad in rural Massachusetts.
We followed the Tide closely, watching their games when we could after dad's games were over.
What a great history Alabama has had in football, and how great is it that they are once again competing for top honors nationally?

Jan,
I found your blog for the first time today. As I read, I discovered that you mysteriously left off a post about Alabama's bowl loss.
Being from Utah, it was the only Alabama game I saw this year... but I was definitely rooting against your Tide.
What say you about that wonderful game? :)
I like your blog and appreciate your contributions. Best of luck!
