Sotomayor Confirmation Hearing is Underway

July 13, 2009 10:51 AM

The hearing is now underway, and you can watch it live HERE and add your comments on the Facebook link. The Republicans are coming out swinging -- Sessions and Hatch hare raised questions about whether she will a fair and impartial justice, based on some of her comments and speeches. She looks very somber.

But so far, the highlight is from Sen. Kohl. He quoted Justice Thomas at his confirmation hearing, when Thomas said he believes it is important that a justice "can walk in the shoes of the people who are affected by what the Court does." Kohl then goes on to say he believes that comment embodies President Obama's "empathy standard."

Hmmm... is Kohl coming around on Thomas? Maybe he read his amazing dissent in Chicago v Morales, when he skewered his ivory tower colleagues, who don't live in crime-laden neighborhoods, when they ruled on behalf of gang members and striking down Chicago's anti-gang loitering ordinance? Maybe Kohl will ask her whether she agrees with Thomas on Morales tomorrow!

Or maybe he was just reading his prepared statement.
