Greek Tragedy?
August 27, 2008 4:10 PM
1:50 pm MT: From ABC News' Rick Klein, author of The Note: So all the buzz today was supposed to be about two big Wednesday speeches -- Bill Clinton’s and Joe Biden.
Why, then, is everyone in Denver talking about stagecraft?
It’s simple: Reporters got their first glimpse of the stage where Barack Obama will deliver his speech tomorrow night at Invesco Field. Reuters described the set as similar to a "Greek temple."
Thus a legend -- not the good kind -- was born.
Said one Democrat: "This is a disaster of mythical proportions." Said another: "It's not enough that he wants to be president -- he wants to be Zeus." Said the first: "Will he send down thunderbolts from the mountain?"
Those are the Democrats -- though assuredly not Obama partisans. Cue the Republicans: The RNC blasted around an e-mail referring to the "Temple of Obama."
"Tomorrow you're going to see Obama come down from Olympus to be among us mere mortals," Michael Steele, the former lieutenant governor of Maryland, told reporters in Denver.
Senior Obama advisers dismiss the comparisons. There will be columns, they say, but it won’t look like a Greek temple -- or even the White House portico.
"It looks like any state capitol," one adviser tells ABC News. "It's a bunch of columns."
For the candidate who brought you his very own faux-presidential seal, this is not a good perception. Obama aides insist that the set is staying, and that it won't look as bad as it sounds right now; the real backdrop, they say, will be his supporters.
It raises anew the larger issue: After Berlin, and the "Celebrity" ads, does Obama want to accept the nomination in front of a screaming crowd of 75,000 people?
Obama folks, who see the evening as an organizing tool, say yes. There’s a real enthusiasm gap here that the Obama folks want to exploit
But I wonder: If this was being put together post-"Celebrity" -- had it not been in the works for months -- would the campaign have had such a problem with accepting the nomination inside the Pepsi Center -- just like people normally do?

Really?! A New Concept of democracy from the Temple of Doom on top of Mile High - Your own inability to earn support is the fault of your opponent for lacking leadership to persuade those who are against you to vote for you!
The Greeks actually counted their stones at the foot of their temple, one by one and one person one stone, a true Jeffersonian, excuse me, Greek democracy.
Now, Zero-bama either throw away votes by challenge them in court, or take them from his opponents.

He thinks he is the messiah, but the sad part is, his supporters treats him like that. Why wouldn't he get the messiah complex?
I wouldn't be surprised if he moved his speech over to the Bird's nest in Beijing....LOL...why not call all the 10,000 dancers out to recreate his miraculous career in full color. Will Obama sing a finale with Rezko, Ayers, and Wright? Wouldn't that be a hoot!
sigh....how did we get to this? The presumptiousness and arrogance of this horrible man is stunning.

Will HIllary get a roll call vote or not? They want a unanimous vote for Obama? Not only has there been a roll call vote since like forever, but this wreaks of totalatarianism.
Again, how did we come to this? What are we doing to ourselves?
God help America.

I truly fear for our children's futures when I watch Obama's spell over the throngs. Wake up before it's too late people. Listen to what Bill Clinton said last night. We would be better off with a leader who can deliver half of his promises than one who can do nothing but keep us entertained until it's too late.

ABC News is doing a very good hatchet job for the McCain campaign. Now wonder they have the worst ratings of all the major broadcast networks. If you are going to play partner with the Republicans, why not just be blatant like Fox News and stop pretending to be neutral? What in the world does stagecraft have to do with the issues?
Posted by: Kevin | Aug 27, 2008 5:12:04 PM
This grandiose stage production will come back to bite them in the but, when they try to paint McCain as elitist or out of touch.
DO THEY REALLY THINK AMERICANS WANT TO SEE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES AS CELIBRITIES?
Obama playing Denzil playing President?
I hope the Republicans have a field day with this and create fantastic ads against the empty suit/actor!
Hillary supporter for McCain BEFORE and AFTER the convention!

He will distribute loaves and fishes during his speech.
Maybe even turn water into wine as an encore.
Why is all this money being spent for a "one night" spectacle. Why can't he give his speech like mere mortals do?

Just heard some funny stuff on FOX from McCain camp about the celebrity politican and the Greek garb being sold for the occasion, and special togas for those that are more modest and cling to guns and religion!
It sounded so funny....they have really stepped in it this time with the overboard production, and they are in touch with the common man?
UGH I CAN'T STAND THIS
HILLARY SUPPORTER FOR McCAIN
This will go down worse than his speech in Germany that they paid rock band Reamonn to play for free concert in park to get 200,000 out to hear a nobody unknown 2 minute Senator. Plus free beer and flags passed out.

Obama doesn't think he's Jesus or Zeus. I doubt if some of you have listened to one word. You're just happy channeling Rush like zombies. One of us will have the last laugh in November, eh?

The McCain campaign has turned into a bunch of whining babies since Steve Schmidt took over. In an attempt to control the daily news cycle, they complain about every meaningless detail of Obama's campaign. When is the MSM or the Obama campaign going to start calling them out for acting like petty, immature 3 yr olds who cry to Mommy to get attention? I find it incredibly sad that they have been successful. The MSM is gleefully reporting this nonsense.

Hey everybody--just chill because Obama is cool enough to take a little humor--in fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see him come out in a toga, looking pretty good, laughing at himself, offer up a little arugala as a symbol of better health and nutrition for kids in the Democratic future--and get on with more serious business. It's is a little something to smile about today but it doesn't make Bush or McCain any more humorous. They remain just as grim as always.

Posted by: kate | Aug 27, 2008 7:01:32 PM
Obama is rapidly become a joke. Ridiculous. Is he Zeus now? And this from a man who invented his own presidential seal.
Come to think of it, Zeus was married to Hera who in many respects resembles the domineering Michelle, so the analogy flows. Obama in a toga. Yah!

The stage is clearly meant to resemble a typical state house. However, the visual analogy to a temple along the lines of the Parthenon is there, whether you like it or not. Even bloggers on the Huffington Post are decrying it: "Axelrod, tear down this wall!" There is clearly something to it.
We'll have to wait and see, but this could be a little like the Dukakis tank...

Rick Klein,
how about the media focus on whether or not the mccain camp's claims that obama loves himself over his country is true, instead of talking about how people will think this guy believes he's a god because of a stage set. its you guys with the responsibility and power or presenting this information to the people. please just present the facts and don't repeat the talking points.

Gee, nice double standard. Bush gave a speech in front of columns when he accepted the nomination in 2004, no one said a word.
I would also like to point out that those columns are reminiscent of the Lincoln Memorial. Obama is giving his speech on the anniversary of King's "I Have a Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial.
Nice that you just cut and paste whatever comes into your inbox from the Republicans.

Actually, I think he's trying to mimic Lincoln Memorial to exploit the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a dream" speech. Obama is all about and only about appearances. Pull back the curtain and you find ties to Bill Ayers, an anti-American "church," Rezko, and other rather shady leftists. But don't let the truth get in the way of celebrity worship.

Criticism of Obama's popularity is pretty stupid because it is criticizing voters. It's elitist at it core to blame Obama for appealing to the lowly citizens and supporters who stand for hours to listen to him.
This attack failed for Hillary Clinton and it will for John McCain too.

You actually support a man who for 20 years "worshipped" at a hate-church? A man who is so stupid that he doesn't know basic 20th century science that tells us when life begins? A man who ... oh, what's the use? You are already dead. It's too late for you, but not for some...

I just posted this comment at WAPost, regarding Charles Krauthammer's excellent piece, "Has He Lost His Mind?" about Obama's pseudo-mystical presentation. I posted it at LGF, too, where I am a proud Lizard.
"Krauthammer's remarks point out the mass-delusionary quality that is central to the Obama campaign. The use of this form of 'stagecraft' is right out of Mussolini's and Hitler's playbooks. Take a look at George L. Mosse's The Nationalization of the Masses, some time. And don't forget, the peculiar and extravagant Chinese ceremonies at the Olympics were created by Albert Speer, Jr., whose father was Hitler's architect and the creator of the 'walls' and columns of light that created the "new history" image at Hitler's rallies. Obama's imagery is by design. Perfect, for a thoughtless mass craving a new leader to address as 'holy.'"
The event Thursday night will be the pseudo-"orgasmic" climax to the Obamamessiah campaign that preceded it. This isn't the "Democratic Party," anymore. Don't fall for the surreptitious, inferential imagery. Vote for Nader. Vote for Daffy Duck. Just don't vote for Obama.

How about Obama incorporates all the corporate lobbyists that have flocked to Denver for his grand coronation. (You know the lobbyists who we're not supposed to know about)
They could perform a flyover with their caravan of corporate jets. Carbon footprints be damned.
Better yet they could shower him with cash as he ascends to his Mile High throne. Just then, showing that he cannot be corrupted, Barack would reach to the heavens and direct a bolt of lightning to strike down the evil lobbyists.
I believe Barack did say he was the "Change candidate" and would not accept "one dime" from lobbyists - right?
Posted by: Jack | Aug 28, 2008 6:23:57 AM
Give me a break! You are complaining that 75,000 people are supporting a presidential candidate?? Isn't that a GOOD THING? Doesn't that signify that this man presents a real change to the country, one that we so DESPERATELY need and one that so many of us WANT?? These smear campaigns that call Obama a "Celebrity" are old Republican tactics. And I can't believe how many people are falling for it!!!! Oh that's right, most of this country is redneck and ass backwards, and thinks that as long as they have their guns in their hands, everything will be ok.
Obama is what this country needs, If Mc Cain gets elected, I guarantee that ALL OF US are going to see the demise of the country we love.
Don't get distracted by the bias news corporations. Do you own research. Do you want 4 more years or war? Of a terrible economy? Or is it that you are just afraid to elect a black man?

Rick, I'm fairly sure you've been to Washington, DC. So I'm sure you know the obvious: this so-called "Greek temple" is supposed to like the White House, the Capitol, or any other of a hundred buildings in our nation's capital. The look is Roman, not Greek, and is the quasi-official architectural style of the federal government for reasons which are obvious to anyone who's taken a class on American history.
This post could have been about how ridiculous and disgusting it is that these ideas spread far and wide despite everyone involved knowing that they're false. We have Charles Krauthammer, columnist for the Washington Post, pretending he's never seen Washington in order to bash Obama. The next election will turn on this sort of garbage, which is exactly why I don't follow politics anymore. You could have been part of the solution. Instead you decided to be part of the problem. Congratulations. Keep it up and you'll be on the WaPo's payroll soon.

Please. That's no temple. It looks more like a Greek stoa -- a portico in a public place where people would gather (such as the Athenian Agora) and where leaders would sometimes speak from the steps. Neoclassical style in general is associated with democracy and freedom in this country, hence its adoption in Washington monuments. Leave it to the naysayers to make Mount Olympus out of a molehill.
Note to the McCain adviser who thought he was being funny about togas/Greek temples: the Greeks didn't wear togas. Duh.

Let's just hope this low brow spectacle doesn't progress to its logical conclusion with a Michelle Obama wardrobe malfunction...oh the humanity!

Love the comment from the Democrat about Zeus and sending thunderbolts down from the mountain.
As for photo shopping Obama in Caesar garb (or generic Greek. Caesar was actually Roman), I already saw one on another blog. He was holding the Obamadential Seal as a shield in one hand and some green leafy fronds in another. Yes, he was wearing a crown of laurel leaves as well as some snazzy Greek (or possibly Roman) sandals.
Pretty darn funny.
I wonder is the Nobeli Goreacle planning to be up there on the stage?

Everyone who is taking offense at the jokes made about this needs to chill and try to develop a sense of humor (do party rules allow Democrats to have a sense of humor?)
If you all can't handle this, how will you handle the inevitable jokes and criticism that get thrown at ALL Presidents? You think Obama will get a pass on this if he becomes the President?
