John Berman has been at ABC since 1995, and allowed to appear on television since 2001. He covered the 2008 campaign extensively, following John McCain and Mitt Romney during the primaries and then Barack Obama in the general election. He also spent more than 20 months chasing George W. Bush around the country as a producer from 1999 until 2001, earning the clever nickname, "Pain in the Ass," from our 43rd president. He is a frequent and sometimes welcome contributor to all of ABC's broadcasts.

1:25 pm MT: The games have begun: The Republican National Committee is alerting reporters to the fact that a "large group" of young people are headed to a downtown Denver hotel dressed in togas -- calling attention to the "Temple of Obama" at Invesco Field.
Probably an irresistible image to include in today's coverage.

Nice use of their time. Wonder if they think about the problems facing America today, or do they just think about HATE all the time.

I do believe that McCain is making a huge mistake mocking Obama today. Regardless if you like Obama or not, today is one of the most historic days in American history. Less then forty years ago there were "white's only" drinking fountains, and 40 years ago today MLK gave his famous I have a dream speech. The mocking of Obama on this day will be received with a lot of blow back from most sectors of the population. Being that McCain already has the racist vote wrapped up this can not help McCain's chances in this election.

my fellow poster debra last night brilliantly dubbed tonight's event as 'THE CORONATION OF ZEUS...' i would add this event is stagecraft and nothing more just like the candidate. however i would LOVE to see obama wearing a toga. maybe obamagirl will make an appearance. i hear the anthem will be sung by an american idol star, how fitting. and perhaps michelle will fly in on a broom, take her meds, and not go bipolar tonight. entertainment at its finest bought and paid for by corporate/lobbyist america.

A stunt worthy of G. Gordon Liddy and the Nixon Dirty Tricksters.

Obamanus Rex, rise!
Make America a laughing stock with your big ego and little class

jim i agree this is a historic day, we all respect. but if anyone is being disrespectful of this historic day it is the obama camp who is diminishing the moment with this spectacle.
no one to blame but themselves jim.

I agree that McCain should just recant the same, cookie-cutter response acknowledging the historical fact of Obama's candidacy as the first African-American candidate nominated by a major party as Obama does in prefacing contrasts with McCain on the issues with "I respect McCain's sacrifice to his country. . ."
America may not want to recognize it but African-Americans have only legally had the right to vote since 1964. Those 44 years are barely a second in the perspective of history; and after such a brief period of time there is now an African-American only one election away from becoming President of these same united states and their history of legallized slavery and "Jim Crow Laws." That is a noteworthy and historical accomplishment for Obama AND the U.S.

Historical or hysterical? Will Obama ride through the crowd on a chariot? Oh, I forgot. He's going to rise from below. That's kind of weird. I thought he'd be descending from the heavens.

"guys! guys!
"Larry Craig is at next week's convention"

Historic? It's meaningless to those who are not racists.
Posted by: geevill | Aug 28, 2008 3:50:39 PM
sonia, so when Bush had basically the same stage in 2004 the moment wasn't diminished....why?
Posted by: jim | Aug 28, 2008 3:52:37 PM
McCain and the Republicans are nothing jokes. I am so glad he finds his actions funny. I hope he can hang on to that laughter come November. He is going to need it. What a complete embarrassment to our Nation.
No respect for anyone.

Since the beginning of his campaign, Obama sounds like a tearsheet from a Marxist playbook, from class warfare to nationalizing the oil companies, and punishing Americans who shows any sign of wealth and really tax them hard to teach them a lesson . . . yeah, this is his version of the "Amercian" way. So tonight will I be suprised if he walks out from his temple pillars wearing a brown shirt with a bright armband and marching with a kick-step in "jack-boots". . . ? No, I would expect it! The question I have, if Obama becomes President will the White House be too white for him and Michelle, or will that "change" also? The bottom line is one of the real changes you will see after Obama taxes you for being successful, will be the change left in you pocket and he'll probably go after that too! WAKE UP AMERICA! The news media hasn't!

Have you seen the pics of Bush's acceptance speech in front of his temple columns in 2004. How about the 2008 Virginia Republican Convention. Did't think so. Mccain couldn't fill a hotel lobby. We will be rocking tonite...come join us. Obama08

To bad Barrack Hussein is going to lose. Now Michelle won't be able to wear her new burkah to the inaugerable ball. :(

Hilarious! Cute childrens' dirty tricks.
Several hours 'before' Obama's speech, McCain will be responding to it in a TV ad airing in choice battleground states.
Is the old boy so desperate for attention?
It like a frat boy hazing a plege.
No dignity for the White House with this lot.

Come on jim, who's the racist?
Posted by: bombem | Aug 28, 2008 3:58:16 PM
So let me get this straight...
Republicans in sheets, marching to keep an African American out of public office...didn't that go out of style around 1964?
Posted by: James | Aug 28, 2008 3:59:15 PM
This is no more of a blow out convention then what the GOP has planned. Obama moved it so more of the people who support him and help celebrate this day with him. I find your comments to be a bit on the jealous side. I also find it funny how when Obama does something you knock him down but McCain can say and do the exact same thing it is great, super!! You need reality checks!

Great thinking. Mock the historic acceptance speech of the first African American to be nominated for the presidency by a major party. All on the 45th anniversary of the historic "I Have a Dream" speech by Dr. MArtin Luther King. This shows a huge maturity level and will really bring those African American voters to the GOP.
The only thing that would be even more mockery would be to attempt to step on the moment by "leaking" the name of the Veep choice before or during the speech.
HA HA, great going Republicans. Mock historic moments. People will love ya for it.

"So let me get this straight...

Strom Thurmond would be so proud.

jim 'bush the unfortunate' had not distinguished himself as a celebrity, obama has. he perpetuates the image with this spectacle.
also i don't remember bush 'rising from the bottom of the pit' what is that all about?
hey jim a little humor is good. you all have enjoyed your humor at the expense of hillary, we survived it, and so will you.

To James - The KKKrs were Democrats like Wallace and Byrd. It was a Republican that freed the slaves and the southern Democrats that enforced segregation and who continue to want blacks to stay on the Democrats' plantation.

Let's see how John McCain integrates his being a POW into this event.
He must think that being in prison makes you a great leader -- look what it did for Germany.
