Toga, Toga, Toga

August 28, 2008 3:28 PM

1:25 pm MT: The games have begun: The Republican National Committee is alerting reporters to the fact that a "large group" of young people are headed to a downtown Denver hotel dressed in togas -- calling attention to the "Temple of Obama" at Invesco Field.

Probably an irresistible image to include in today's coverage.

Nice use of their time. Wonder if they think about the problems facing America today, or do they just think about HATE all the time.

I do believe that McCain is making a huge mistake mocking Obama today. Regardless if you like Obama or not, today is one of the most historic days in American history. Less then forty years ago there were "white's only" drinking fountains, and 40 years ago today MLK gave his famous I have a dream speech. The mocking of Obama on this day will be received with a lot of blow back from most sectors of the population. Being that McCain already has the racist vote wrapped up this can not help McCain's chances in this election.

my fellow poster debra last night brilliantly dubbed tonight's event as 'THE CORONATION OF ZEUS...' i would add this event is stagecraft and nothing more just like the candidate. however i would LOVE to see obama wearing a toga. maybe obamagirl will make an appearance. i hear the anthem will be sung by an american idol star, how fitting. and perhaps michelle will fly in on a broom, take her meds, and not go bipolar tonight. entertainment at its finest bought and paid for by corporate/lobbyist america.

Obamanus Rex, rise!

Make America a laughing stock with your big ego and little class

Posted by: trettion | Aug 28, 2008 3:46:28 PM

jim i agree this is a historic day, we all respect. but if anyone is being disrespectful of this historic day it is the obama camp who is diminishing the moment with this spectacle.
no one to blame but themselves jim.

I agree that McCain should just recant the same, cookie-cutter response acknowledging the historical fact of Obama's candidacy as the first African-American candidate nominated by a major party as Obama does in prefacing contrasts with McCain on the issues with "I respect McCain's sacrifice to his country. . ."
America may not want to recognize it but African-Americans have only legally had the right to vote since 1964. Those 44 years are barely a second in the perspective of history; and after such a brief period of time there is now an African-American only one election away from becoming President of these same united states and their history of legallized slavery and "Jim Crow Laws." That is a noteworthy and historical accomplishment for Obama AND the U.S.

Posted by: Jason | Aug 28, 2008 3:49:25 PM

Historical or hysterical? Will Obama ride through the crowd on a chariot? Oh, I forgot. He's going to rise from below. That's kind of weird. I thought he'd be descending from the heavens.

Historic? It's meaningless to those who are not racists.

Posted by: geevill | Aug 28, 2008 3:50:39 PM

sonia, so when Bush had basically the same stage in 2004 the moment wasn't diminished....why?

Posted by: jim | Aug 28, 2008 3:52:37 PM

McCain and the Republicans are nothing jokes. I am so glad he finds his actions funny. I hope he can hang on to that laughter come November. He is going to need it. What a complete embarrassment to our Nation.
No respect for anyone.

Since the beginning of his campaign, Obama sounds like a tearsheet from a Marxist playbook, from class warfare to nationalizing the oil companies, and punishing Americans who shows any sign of wealth and really tax them hard to teach them a lesson . . . yeah, this is his version of the "Amercian" way. So tonight will I be suprised if he walks out from his temple pillars wearing a brown shirt with a bright armband and marching with a kick-step in "jack-boots". . . ? No, I would expect it! The question I have, if Obama becomes President will the White House be too white for him and Michelle, or will that "change" also? The bottom line is one of the real changes you will see after Obama taxes you for being successful, will be the change left in you pocket and he'll probably go after that too! WAKE UP AMERICA! The news media hasn't!

Posted by: usawhiteguy | Aug 28, 2008 3:55:43 PM

Have you seen the pics of Bush's acceptance speech in front of his temple columns in 2004. How about the 2008 Virginia Republican Convention. Did't think so. Mccain couldn't fill a hotel lobby. We will be rocking tonite...come join us. Obama08

Hilarious! Cute childrens' dirty tricks.
Several hours 'before' Obama's speech, McCain will be responding to it in a TV ad airing in choice battleground states.
Is the old boy so desperate for attention?
It like a frat boy hazing a plege.
No dignity for the White House with this lot.

Posted by: bombem | Aug 28, 2008 3:58:16 PM

So let me get this straight...
Republicans in sheets, marching to keep an African American out of public office...didn't that go out of style around 1964?

Posted by: James | Aug 28, 2008 3:59:15 PM

This is no more of a blow out convention then what the GOP has planned. Obama moved it so more of the people who support him and help celebrate this day with him. I find your comments to be a bit on the jealous side. I also find it funny how when Obama does something you knock him down but McCain can say and do the exact same thing it is great, super!! You need reality checks!

Posted by: beck | Aug 28, 2008 4:01:33 PM

Great thinking. Mock the historic acceptance speech of the first African American to be nominated for the presidency by a major party. All on the 45th anniversary of the historic "I Have a Dream" speech by Dr. MArtin Luther King. This shows a huge maturity level and will really bring those African American voters to the GOP.

The only thing that would be even more mockery would be to attempt to step on the moment by "leaking" the name of the Veep choice before or during the speech.

HA HA, great going Republicans. Mock historic moments. People will love ya for it.

To James - The KKKrs were Democrats like Wallace and Byrd. It was a Republican that freed the slaves and the southern Democrats that enforced segregation and who continue to want blacks to stay on the Democrats' plantation.

Let's see how John McCain integrates his being a POW into this event.

He must think that being in prison makes you a great leader -- look what it did for Germany.

These snap judgments regarding the podium are true representations of the GOP. Don't bother me with the facts. Togas are a stunt worthy of the GOP. Maybe we can worry over his lettuce choice while wearing the togas.

Anyone here ever seen the Lincoln Memorial in DC? You know, that sacred place where one of our heroes is honored? I have pictures of my family in front of it, and we don't think we are Zeus. We are proud of our great leaders. (Think Bush will get a memorial?)

4200 dead in Iraq. 20K maimed, 500K Iraqis dead. Banks are failing, American debt is historic, the American dollar is falling, 47 million people can't see a doctor, involved in 2 wars, without exit plans, and a gallon of gas is more than 1/2 of the minimum wage.

This is leadership? Togas? This is the plan to solve the above?

Thanks, but no thanks.

Lyndon Johnson had to push for the Civil Rights Bill --- he alienated all of his Southern Base (Democrats) and didn't run for President again because he thought it was more important than being President for a second term.

It was the Democrats that fillibustered the bill. It was the Repulicans that finally got the Bill through congress (over 80% voted for it) less than 30% of the Democrats.

So who is really responsible for the Civil Rights Act of the 1960's. The Republicans.

You think Obama will stand up to Nutty Nancy and Wimpy Harry Reid....

It should come as no surprise that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Republican. In that era, almost all black Americans were Republicans. Why? From its founding in 1854 as the anti-slavery party until today, the Republican Party has championed freedom and civil rights for blacks. And as one pundit so succinctly stated, the Democrat Party is as it always has been, the party of the four S's: Slavery, Secession, Segregation and now Socialism.

It was the Democrats who fought to keep blacks in slavery and passed the discriminatory Black Codes and Jim Crow laws. The Democrats started the Ku Klux Klan to lynch and terrorize blacks. The Democrats fought to prevent the passage of every civil rights law beginning with the civil rights laws of the 1860's, and continuing with the civil rights laws of the 1950's and 1960's.

During the civil rights era of the 1960's, Dr. King was fighting the Democrats who stood in the school house doors, turned skin-burning fire hoses on blacks and let loose vicious dogs. It was Republican President Dwight Eisenhower who pushed to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and sent troops to Arkansas to desegregate schools. President Eisenhower also appointed Chief Justice Earl Warren to the U.S. Supreme Court which resulted in the 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education decision ending school segregation. Much is made of Democrat President Harry Truman's issuing an Executive Order in 1948 to desegregate the military. Not mentioned is the fact that it was President Eisenhower who actually took action to effectively end segregation in the military.

Democrat President John F. Kennedy is lauded as a proponent of civil rights. However, Kennedy voted against the 1957 Civil rights Act while he was a senator, as did Democrat Senator Al Gore, Sr. And after he became president, John F. Kennedy was opposed to the 1963 March on Washington by Dr. King that was organized by A. Phillip Randolph who was a black Republican. President Kennedy, through his brother Attorney General Robert Kennedy, had Dr. King wiretapped and investigated by the FBI on suspicion of being a Communist in order to undermine Dr. King.

Bush and Obama used columns. Unity. People aren't so different after all. We're all the same: Obama, Bush, McCain. We're all human beings. Peace.

Toga! Toga! Toga! Arrest the haters! This is illegal and offensive!

Maybe if we learned to laugh at ourselves this world would not be so difficult. World's problems? Hahaha

No. Seriously. Obama is a serious candidate who will win because he knows how to lead. No laughing matter. The next Commander-in-Chief. Historical. There isn't even a contest here. Open dome to let everyone know that this is an open party.

Those mean Republicans are now pointing out that Britney Spears' designers design the stage. That is mean.

Posted by: David | Aug 28, 2008 4:22:48 PM

Few black Americans know that it was Republicans who founded the Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Unknown also is the fact that Republican Senator Everett Dirksen from Illinois was key to the passage of civil rights legislation in 1957, 1960, 1964 and 1965. Not mentioned in recent media stories about extension of the 1965 Voting Rights Act is the fact that Dirksen wrote the language for the bill. Dirksen also crafted the language for the Civil Rights Act of 1968 which prohibited discrimination in housing. President Lyndon Johnson could not have achieved passage of civil rights legislation without the support of Republicans.

Roy,
Correct that it was southern D's who stood in the way of integration, however it is important to then note the R's "southern strategy" in the late 60's through the 70's to recruit disaffected whites to the R party after they lost the fight on segregation.

Posted by: James | Aug 28, 2008 4:27:40 PM

Democrats have been running our inner-cities for the past 30-40 years, and blacks are still complaining about the same problems. Over $7 trillion dollars have been spent on poverty programs since President Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty with little, if any, impact on poverty. Diabolically, every election cycle, Democrats blame Republicans for the deplorable conditions in the inner-cities, then incite blacks to cast a protest vote against Republicans.

The Democrat Party policies of socialism and dependency on government handouts offer the pathway to poverty, while Republican Party principles of hard work, personal responsibility, getting a good education and ownership of homes and small businesses offer the pathway to prosperity.

Ask Colin Powell and Condi Rice and Michael Steele.

That's fine -- Colin Powell can back whomever he wants. It's just that I get tired of hearing that the Democratic party has done so much for Black America and Repulicans have done nothing.

I just believe that the Democrats promote a real dependency on government progams to keep at stranglehold on the black vote.

I really have no idea what was the thought of having this big Greek Temple setting for Obama, they will deserve every jab and crack they get about this.

This is such a total waste, and I would of thought after all the talk of who is elite, a rock star, full of showboating and so on that the Obama camp would of been humble by the chance of a black man running for President and tone it down.

Guess not, this event will have to go down in history as one even bigger than the Olympics that we just witnessed, guess there is no room for humility in the Obama camp.

This guy has nothing to do with slavery, other than the fact his ancestors captured, kidnapped and sold blacks to ships captains.....stick your racism ....get it right or keep quiet in my opinion, there is enough lying misinformation out there! imo

geevill: I suppose you didn't hear that Messiah Obama was going to walk on the water before he went to day four of the convention. I don't know if he took his chariot or changed into his robe but he will be there walking in the shoes of MLK and making sure he got the football stadium filled with people like MLK drew the crowds. But he better beware the Republican Roman's are going to defeat him in a race for empire and he could be swored to death.

integrity: Obama is not an Arab American he is the offspring of a black man and white women which makes him Mulatto. Read up on that name. It originated many many years ago but the blacks and the media won't call him that. I will. That is what he is to stay. Obama is in this race only for history and to heck with the country. Do you really think he cares about the people in this country. He is in it to make history but he really hasn't made it yet because he isn't elected president. Thank god for that.

I believe he was born in Kenya but registered in Hawaii. There should be an investigation as to what hospital in Kenya or what hospital in Hawaii he was born. Obama did not select Hillary because he didn't want her to be president if elected and circumstances should arise. His wife and Nancy Pelosi played dirty pool against Hillary. I can't wait until the republicans take back the house to rid ourselves of Nancy Pelosi once and for all.
