McCain's Moment: Biography in Search of a Theme
September 05, 2008 12:16 AM
Sen. John McCain tonight made his play for the support of a nation that’s ready for change -- by introducing the public to the new party he intends to lead.
It was a speech largely devoid of overarching themes -- defined as much by its mundane qualities as by its vision.
“Fight,” McCain declared and promised, again and again, offering his unique biography as testament. “Fight with me.”
The speech’s emotional core was McCain’s personal story, told with a level of details he’s largely avoided in public settings. “I fell in love with my country when I was a prisoner in someone else's,” he said.
It contained only hints of the battle to come with Barack Obama; for a night, he let subtlety reign -- for the most part.
“I'm not running for president because I think I'm blessed with such personal greatness that history has anointed me to save our country in its hour of need. My country saved me. My country saved me, and I cannot forget it. And I will fight for her as long as I draw breath, so help me God,” he said, in one of his few overt tweaks of his opponent.
But as his choice of running mates made clear, his is a Republican Party that wants desperately to believe in itself again. McCain made only passing attempts to appeal to those sentiments.
This was John McCain’s convention, of course, but it may long be remembered as Sarah Palin’s. And as the race moves into its final 60 days, McCain is asking an awful lot of his running mate.

So "I'm a maverick and she's a maverick too" is it?
That's all? Mavericks?
This country has big problems and small gimmicky charicatures are not going to be enough to solve them.
I'm voting Obama/Biden - at least they have a plan.

Catholic Democrats is expressing surprise and shock that Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's acceptance speech tonight mocked her opponent's work in the 1980s for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. She belittled Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's experience as a community organizer in Catholic parishes on the South Side of Chicago, work he undertook instead of pursuing a lucrative career on Wall Street. In her acceptance speech, Ms. Palin said, "I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities." Community organizing is at the heart of Catholic Social Teaching to end poverty and promote social justice.

McCain's theme is: No responsibility.
Can we, as a nation, admit that George Bush has screwed this country over? Exactly how is the $10 Billion a month we are spending in Iraq help us educate our children, repair bridges, or make the change to a renewable energy economy?
On the other hand, it is not difficult to see how this ill-considered mistake have hurt us and aided our enemies:
Iran is much more powerful than before since their natural enemy, Iraq, has been neutralized. Iran has been stretching their muscles in Syria and Lebanon. They oked Hezbollah to start a war with Israel, that left Isreal weaker. Besides this, Iran has much stronger influence within Iraq due to the fact that the majority, and the government are Shia.
Russia is delighted to see us do overstretched militarily that we cannot even persue the enemy who attacked us on 9/11. No wonder they felt free to stomp on Georgia. Like we were going to do something about it!
China is doing their best to lock up the natural resources around the world, regardless of the vileness of the regiem, and beating us bloody on the world trade front, while are in the back of the class throwing paper airplanes.
And of course, we have lost the respect of the free world, for many reasons, under the Republican administration.
Which brings us to an interesting point. George Bush is the man that the GOP vouched for and elected. Now that he has failed, in so many ways (have I mentioned the credit crisis?), the GOP would like to pretend they couldn't pick him out of a lineup.
This is just not right. This was their candidate. He executed their ideas. He IS the REPUBLICAN president. And the Republicans should accept responsibility for him, take their lumps, and lose power.
Otherwise this bold experiment in democracy will be a failure.

Good analysis by Richard Klein
Except for the biography portion, the speech was rather weak. I came away with no idea of what his economic recovery plan is. He provided no details about his health care platform, his free trade agenda, or ways to make college tuition more affordable. All I heard was the same ideas that George Bush has talked about for 8 years. The tax cut and less spending argument has really lost steam in the last couple years. Make no mistake about this, the Republican Party is Sarah Palin's not John McCain's.

"McCain's theme is: No responsibility."
You have it partly right. The Republican party's theme is No Responsibility.
No Responsibility for the war and 4100 American deaths that didn't have to be,
No Responsibility for destroying our environment,
No Responsibility for gas at $4 per gallon
No responsibility to head off a $10 Trillion national debt
This election is about two parties: The party of faith, and the party of blind faith.

You nailed it: McCain's Moment: Biography in Search of a Theme
What a great war hero from a great military family... Who the hell cares? He has no mission other than to lower taxes (in English: raise the debt).
Posted by: DownSouth | Sep 5, 2008 1:02:12 AM
Sen McCain did not once say what he's gonna do about anything thats going on in the world. I honestly believe that Sen McCain thinks his record alone is going to win him this election. I dont want another 8 years like before. I can barely afford to put gas in my car or groceries in my house and all McCain has to say is he fell in love with his coutry while he was a POW. What are you going to do about education or healthcare and oh yeah what exactly is your plan to bring our troops home from iraq dont you think they been there long enough. This war was pointless and maybe if you admitted to that fact maybe just maybe you could convince some more people to vote for you. I honestly think that McCain didnt pick Sarah Palin for what she can bring to the table. Don't you get it? It's his new stratgey. Do you honestly think that the repulican party has really thought this all the way threw. Really if McCain just so happen to pass away do you really think these repulicans are really going to want a women in charge. They think a women should be barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen. The fact of the matter is Barack is the better man for the job.

Well if I ever had any doubt that McCain has no real plan for anything except to get elected because he is a war hero it was set to rest tonight.
He can needle Obama all he wants for believing the people need to rise up and do something before this country goes down the tubes but at least Obama GETS that that is where we are headed.

Lower taxes, Drill, OooooK!
Sounds like we are going to get a lot done. Oh fight with him to get it done. How could I forget that?

Sarah Palin should drop McCain from the ticket. It was a retirement speech.

My God, I just got to see the bio film on Cindy McCain and what a woman! What has Michelle Obama done that even comes close, on giving back. Wow...first to graduate from college in her family, travelled the world to help kids in need, her adoption of Bridgette who Mother Theresa gave her because the baby would die....what a philanthrope. I get why she fell for McCain...he is alot like her dad. She is much more soft spoken than Michelle, but so much greater in her biography of good works.
What a great first lady she'll be and I can't wait to see the first "dude" Todd as Gov. Palin's hubby moves to Washington too.
Posted by: Debra | Sep 5, 2008 1:38:27 AM
It's funny how McCain disowned Bush tonight and claimed he would be the one to change the Republican image when he has been in Washington for 26 years and hasn't done anything worth talking about and voted with Bush 90 percent of time, pretty pathetic.
Posted by: Kathy | Sep 5, 2008 1:41:54 AM
Every post a lame Bot supporter...as all the Republicans are celebrating tonight or too tired to respond to the trolls here...but I am always comforted that the few losers that have the time to blog here are probably unemployed lib/dems, or college kids who won't show up to vote....McCain has the Boomers...the voting block that matters.
As of this morning 49% of Americans think Gov. Palin is more qualified to be Prez. than Nobama who got 39%....DEMS SHOULD BE VERY SCARED...and even tho McCain isn't as good with a prompter as Obama/Denzil, I'm not looking for just a speech giver for my Prez.....COUNTRY FIRST, NOT INDIVIDUAL EGO.
Posted by: Debra | Sep 5, 2008 1:43:55 AM
Kathy....Obama voted with Bush 85% of the time on Iraq. Please. Stop the nonsense with Biden's 37 years in the Senate to shore up Bozo's glaring inexperience.

I watched Cindy's biography: I was in tears, I had no idea this great woman had done so much humanitarian work, she did it silently, not for attention, but because it was needed. God bless Cindy; she has changed so many lives for the better all over the world.
Then, I think of Michelle: bitter, racist, not proud, corrupt, greedy, opportunist, wouldn't even vote for Hillary if she was the nominee, married to a horrible fraud.
Now, I am nauseated.

So that's their apparent strategy. McCain is the "nice guy", and Palin is the attack dog. Underhanded and sneaky.
Posted by: Andy | Sep 5, 2008 2:22:52 AM
The strategy so far does have Palin positioned as an attack dog. But if there are complaints about her performance, then it's "sexist." Though Palin's tough enough for an offensive position, she's put in a bubble excluding her from interviews. Or maybe they'll allow for ones that are tightly choreographed by the advisors and image makers.
Posted by: kat | Sep 5, 2008 2:38:02 AM
the great difference between obama & mccain's speeches is one makes you feel pride about and the other makes you despise your country.
Posted by: hannah | Sep 5, 2008 2:38:09 AM
They've already started the interview defense strategy when McCain feigned outrage and canceled the Larry King interview because his spokesman was made to look ridiculous trying to explain her qualifications.
Any interviewer who wants to press her too hard will be characterized as a sexist attacker. She has the immunity idol. But, it's interesting that Gwen Ifill, a respected, black female journalist from the PBS News Hour, will be moderating the VP debate. I am looking forward to seeing how that works out.
I'm willing to bet that her first and maybe only direct interview will be on Fox.

Debra,
Cindy McCain is great at giving away less than 1% of the money she makes every year out of the selling of alcohol.
While Cindy helps some, she is making thousands addicted to alcohol, many are destroying themselves and their families and deforming many unborn babies.
Mrs. Obama on the other side, was born in a poor family. She had to work hard to be accepted as a student in good school and had to be outstanding--10 times better than her wealthier classmates, to be given some room. She is the best example of how much blacks have to sacrifice and give of themselves in order to be respected members of society. When she finished her studies, she went on to help others that were in need.
Summarizing, Cindy is just a wealthy bimbo. Michelle is a true patriot that even when being attacked and crucified by people like you, continues to stay in this country. If Cindy were in Michelle's place, she would take her plane and leave...

So the solution for Republicans spending us into debt (again) is....
More Republicans!
The Ministry of Truth is now drinking its own Kool Aid.
What the Republican party needs to do (advice from a Democrat here) is go back to what it was many, many years ago, dump your NeoCons and FatCat Corporate buddies and clean your own house before you claim to be ready to clean the one you share with me.

I've been a lifelong Republican and had to get up and walk away from McCain's speech. This 72 year OLD man is sooooo old! He is not the change we need...
Posted by: Caitlin | Sep 5, 2008 5:02:02 AM
McCain has Bush's eight-year record to stand on as he proudly claims he has supported it over 90% of the time.
He certainly will not present the Republican Party Platform developed by his Bush advisors, oil and other corporations, neocons, Evangelical fundamentalist pastors and elders.
By accepting their nomination, he is bound to honor it.
He didn't mention it. It is best kept a secret from the American people.
Otherwise, he would lose in a landslide.

What a lightweight speech. Fight, fight, fight. So he's a POW - we knew that, respect that. But what's he gonna do once elected? His economic policy seems to be to cut taxes - that's becoming a 'one trick pony' for the conservatives. It was a good idea with Reagan but Bush has taken it to its logical extreme. How can McCain cut more? Palin looks to be an up and coming conservative talent - but is she ready to be President "on day one'? His 'zingers' were fun, but we could use some substance.
Posted by: darklight46 | Sep 5, 2008 6:04:41 AM
McCain or as Tom Ridge refers to him "John Bush" wants your sons and daughters to join the military. If he's elected, they will be joining the military through the draft.

Why has the media attempted to make such a big story out of Palin. Basically all she did was read a speech, written by a Karl Rove hitman, after practicing it for nearly a week. I can not wait to see when the National Enquirer is proved to be right as it was with Edwards.

2006: McCain voted with Bush 90% of the time.
2007: McCain voted with Bush 95% of the time.
2008: McCain has voted with Bush 100% of the time.
John McCain sold out every principle he once had to tie himself to the most unpopular, most failed president in American history. We don't need 4 more years of Bush.

change....the only change I see coming with the McCain/Palen ticket is 4 more years of change in the pockets of big business and oil companies. McCain is a clueless old man with no clear path to put food on the table and gas in the car for American family's. Palen is nothing more than a pitbull (her words) and a bully who is knee deep in oil and scandal, a ruse by the republicans because her only real qualification is that she is a woman. She is a slap in the face and insult to all women.

For those of you who are now gloating over Cindy McCain your heads are in the clouds.
Here is a fifty-something year old woman who looks like she is 60-something. What has she done? Oh, yeah, her life is so sad she inherited her fathers fortune and forgets she has a half-sister. When asked she says she is an only child. The mind is the first thing to go!
Cindy McCain is not someone I want living next to me!

As a moderate-leaning Democrat, what impresses me about John McCain is that he always says what he thinks, whether people agree or not. That's what he did last night. You rarely hear a candidate criticize his own party in a convention acceptance speech. I contrast that with Senator Obama, who says exactly what he thinks people want to hear. I was also impressed by Cindy McCain, whose class and grace contrasts sharply with Obama's American-hating wife. I had made up my mind to vote for McCain a long time ago. This convention only strengthened my resolve.

Lots of paid Obama bloggers out in force today. More and more saturation of the Internet in the next 60 days. Fear not, Republicans. Not all Democrats have boarded the Obama train wreck. Lots of us don't trust Obama, and can't stand his mean-spirited wife. The "experts" keep saying all the Hillary supporters will line up behind Obama. I'm one of those Hillary supporters, and so are most of my friends. We know better than that.

My mother’s neighbor said she was contacted by a pollster and told him she was voting for Obama because she “didn’t want any trouble with those people.” I know for a fact she’s lying – her and my mom are voting McCain when they’ve been Democrats there entire lives. If you care for this country the way Barak does, you better get out and vote on Nov 5 because the Midol set is gonna FLOOD THE POLLS just to vote against the black guy.

How could anyone critisize John Mccain's POW experience? How un-American you all are! Come on people, do you really want to elect a guy for President that Hollywood and the Media chose? After the cameras stop rolling and the lights go out, there are REAL decisions to be made. It's not just about how well you read a well-written speech. There are no "re-takes" and any "bloopers" could end the world as we know it. You know, Oprah launched Obama's career and what a bunch of followers you dems are! Palin has gotten a lot of criticism for her pit-bull comment, but, if I had to choose a dog to run our country I would much rather have a pit-bull than some pocket-pooch found by Oprah.

Riley, not everyone who supports John McCain is a racist, but thanks for lumping us all into one category. If your mother is afraid to admit she’s for McCain, perhaps she has reason. This very week a black columnist in PA wrote that rioting would be “understandable” if Obama loses because black people feel so “hopeless” about their lives. What the hell does that mean? Since when do Americans riot in the street when their candidate loses? I’m a Democrat who supports John McCain for good reasons, not the least of which is his ability to say what he believes instead of what is politically expedient. That does NOT make me a racist. But please, do go to the polls on NOV 5 and vote your heart out.

It really makes no difference who is elected President...until Congress changes it's way of doing business...it will be the same old story...one party blocking another with regards to the important issues...such as the situation eneregy, the economy, taxes, jobs, etc...President Bush went to Washington on the premise that he could reach across the isles to both parties and accomplish his agenda...instead he was stonewalled at every turn...with each party blaming the other for the stonewall.
Maybe term limits on Senators and Congressman would be a solution...that way they could really do what they were elected to do instead of worrying about being re-elected as soon as they get there...Set the term for both houses at six years...then at the 3 year mark half of the seats in both houses would be up for election...imagine that new blood every 3 years...what a concept...

Republicans say Obama lacks experience to be President!
McCain days as President: 0
Obama days as President: 0
Bush as President: 7.8 yrs. of over taxing the middle class, padding rich Texas pockets with inflated oil and gas profits, and spending $350 million dollars a day in Iraq on a war that he never should have started.
Republicans say Obama lacks judgement to be President!
McCain voted for Iraq war! He thinks our economy is just slow.
Obama voted against going into Iraq! He sees the economy as broken. He sees the 1/2 a million more people who have lost their jobs, just this year, and wants to change the Republican business as usual policies.
Republicans say Obama will raise your taxes and McCain will cut them:
The "your taxes" they are referring to are incomes taxes for people making over $2.8 million dollars a year whose taxes are the lowest percentage they have been since 1930's.
Obama wants the rich to pay their fair share and give you a tax cut and raise the minimum wage. McCain has voted against the wage increase 17 times.
Unless you are rich or heavily invested in oil, you don't want McCain and more Bush policies.
McCain voted against solar and wind power tax incentives to keep us dependent on the same foreign oil that funds terrorists around the globe. Bush, his family, his friends, and his state have made a fortune since the Iraq war interrupted oil supplies and of course is not seeking a solution. Now McCain is running with Gov. Palin from another state relying on oil profits. Do you think for one second they will work to find alternitive energy sources...No!!!
If you are Pro-Life or Pro-Choice, you deserve to be able to live in America, make a living, afford groceries and raise your family as you see fit.
I am proud of how we the people have impowered women over the last 30 years. This year has been historic for women in politics. For the first time in our lives we know a little girl can grow up to be the President of these United States.
I hope you will stand with me and support Barrack Obama and let's make a difference. I want my sons to grow up in an America that they can be as proud of as I am. An America they can work and raise families in peace.
