Palin’s Promise
September 04, 2008 12:01 AM
A whole lot of people watched Sarah Palin tonight and thought John McCain is a very smart man.
In towns across America, where people look and sound like Sarah Palin, she was given a fresh start. There’s the inside-the-hall audience -- who already loved her anyway -- and the outside-the-hall audience -- who have been given plenty of reasons to be skeptical.
To them, Palin showed two important qualities. First, there’s her resolve: This is a woman who has taken a beating in the national media for five days, and she stood before the American people and explained herself.
Then, there’s her fight: With no experience on the national stage, she challenged Barack Obama on his own turf.
Palin has much work to do to establish herself on the political scene. But she took a critical first step today.

here's a comparison of their experience, side by side.
1980 - 1984: Him: Ivy League degree. Her: tiara
1985 - 1990: Him: sterling legal education. Her: sportscaster.
1991 - 1995: Him: Expert on our nation's fundamental legal principles. Her: plotted to leave the Union; thinks Pledge of Allegiance was written by our founding fathers, doesn't know what a Vice President does.
1996 - 2000: Him: sponsored 800 bills. Her: swayed 616 voters.
2001 - 2004: Him: demonstrated the wisdom to oppose the Iraq folly before it even began.
Her: hasn't really though much about Iraq - despite the fact that 17 Alaskans have died there
2005 to present: Him: Impressive figure on the national stage who knows how Congress works and is engaged with foreign policy issues.
Her: small state governor for 21 months; "next to Russia", but that is just 1 of the 190 countries in the world she has never been to.
Conclusion: the word "executive" is not some kind of magic force multiplier when placed in front of the word "experience".
sure we can. after all, 0bama never claimed to be a governor. he IS, however, and excellent senator.

Why did she cut the budget then for funding for special needs children?

Thanks to Palin,
Alaska got 100 million more in government earmarks than any other state (360 million total in earmarks), for a population of 670,000.
Compare that to California with a population of 36,500,000.

I don't care if she crafted the speech herself. She did deliver it well, and I did get a laugh at the pit bull joke.
But I'm JUST NOT VOTING FOR HER. The republican party has gone to the far right, and I'm not interested in giving a secessionist a role in the government.
And what is this nonsense mocking "community organizers". Aren't they the same people out there knocking on doors for McCain/Palin? Helping out in food kitchens? Setting up neighborhood watch groups?

She challenged Obama with the speechwriters words and not her own; she's been kept away from interviews. The fight just came off as nasty as did the other speakers; it's a turn off. No substance on the issues at all.

(1) Did Sarah get more votes running for the Mayor of Wasilia than Joe Biden got when he ran for the president seat of USA? Can somebody come up with actual numbers ? (2) Is it true that OB voted PRESENT over 130 times in the Senate? Again, please Can someone verify ? I am half dumb and half deaf so beautiful speech with big words does not do for me.

AN Alaskan talks
ABOUT SARAH PALIN
I am a resident of Wasilla, Alaska. I have known Sarah
since 1992. Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing
special to say we are on a first-name basis. Our
children have attended the same schools. Her father was
my child's favorite substitute teacher. I also am on a
first name basis with her parents and mother-in-law. I
attended more City Council meetings during her
administration than about 99% of the residents of the
city.
She is enormously popular; in every way she's like the
most popular girl in middle school. Even men who think
she is a poor choice and won't vote for her can't quit
smiling when talking about her because she is a "babe".
It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can
keep a secret. She kept her most recent pregnancy a
secret from her children and parents for seven months.
She is "pro-life". She recently gave birth to a Down's
syndrome baby. There is no cover-up involved, here;
Trig is her baby.
She is energetic and hardworking. She regularly worked
out at the gym.
She is savvy. She doesn't take positions; she just
"puts things out there" and if they prove to be
popular, then she takes credit.
Her husband works a union job on the North Slope for BP
and is a champion snowmobile racer. Todd Palin's kind
of job is highly sought-after because of the schedule
and high pay. He arranges his work schedule so he can
fish for salmon in Bristol Bay for a month or so in
summer, but by no stretch of the imagination is fishing
their major source of income. Nor has her life-style
ever been anything like that of native Alaskans.
Sarah and her whole family are avid hunters.
She's smart.
Her experience is as mayor of a city with a population
of about 5,000 (at the time), and less than 2 years as
governor of a state with about 670,000 residents.
During her mayoral administration most of the actual
work of running this small city was turned over to an
administrator. She had been pushed to hire this
administrator by party power-brokers after she had
gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous
firings which had given rise to a recall campaign.
Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a "fiscal conservative".
During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general
government expenditures by over 33%. During those same
6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City
increased by 38%. This was during a period of low
inflation (1996-2002). She reduced progressive property
taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed
even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited
large corporate property owners way more than they
benefited residents.
The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral
administration weren't enough to fund everything on her
wish list though, borrowed money was needed, too. She
inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with
indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin
encourage the voters to borrow money for? Was it the
infrastructure that she said she supported? The sewage
treatment plant that the city lacked? or a new library?
No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a
multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to
build on a piece of property that the City didn't even
have clear title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs
later--to the delight of the lawyers involved! The
sports complex itself is a nice addition to the
community but a huge money pit, not the profit-
generator she claimed it would be. She also supported
bonds for $5.5m for road projects that could have been
done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing.
While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and
her office redecorated more than once.
These are small numbers, but Wasilla is a very small
city.
As an oil producer, the high price of oil has created a
budget surplus in Alaska. Rather than invest this
surplus in technology that will make us energy
independent and increase efficiency, as Governor she
proposed distribution of this surplus to every
individual in the state.
In this time of record state revenues and budget
surpluses, she recommended that the state borrow/bond
for road projects, even while she proposed distribution
of surplus state revenues: spend today's surplus,
borrow for needs.
She's not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open
to outside ideas or compromise. As Mayor, she fought
ideas that weren't generated by her or her staff. Ideas
weren't evaluated on their merits, but on the basis of
who proposed them.
While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our
highly respected City Librarian because the Librarian
refused to consider removing from the library some
books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents rallied
to the defense of the City Librarian and against
Palin's attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin
backed down and withdrew her termination letter. People
who fought her attempt to oust the Librarian are on her
enemies list to this day.
Sarah complained about the "old boy's club" when she
first ran for Mayor, so what did she bring Wasilla? A
new set of "old boys". Palin fired most of the
experienced staff she inherited. At the City and as
Governor she hired or elevated new, inexperienced,
obscure people, creating a staff totally dependent on
her for their jobs and eternally grateful and fiercely
loyal--loyal to the point of abusing their power to
further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged
happened in the case of pressuring the State's top cop
(see below).
As Mayor, Sarah fired Wasilla's Police Chief because he
"intimidated" her, she told the press. As Governor, her
recent firing of Alaska's top cop has the ring of
familiarity about it. He served at her pleasure and she
had every legal right to fire him, but it's pretty
clear that an important factor in her decision to fire
him was because he wouldn't fire her sister's ex-
husband, a State Trooper. Under investigation for abuse
of power, she has had to admit that more than 2 dozen
contacts were made between her staff and family to the
person that she later fired, pressuring him to fire her
ex-brother-in- law. She tried to replace the man she
fired with a man who she knew had been reprimanded for
sexual harassment; when this caused a public furor, she
withdrew her support.
She has bitten the hand of every person who extended
theirs to her in help. The City Council person who
personally escorted her around town introducing her to
voters when she first ran for Wasilla City Council
became one of her first targets when she was later
elected Mayor. She abruptly fired her loyal City
Administrator; even people who didn't like the guy were
stunned by this ruthlessness.
Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from
saying anything publicly about her.
When then-Governor Murkowski was handing out political
plums, Sarah got the best, Chair of the Alaska Oil and
Gas Conservation Commission: one of the few jobs not in
Juneau and one of the best paid. She had no background
in oil & gas issues. Within months of scoring this
great job which paid $122,400/yr, she was complaining
in the press about the high salary. I was told that she
hated that job: the commute, the structured hours, the
work. Sarah became aware that a member of this
Commission (who was also the State Chair of the
Republican Party) engaged in unethical behavior on the
job. In a gutsy move which some undoubtedly cautioned
her could be political suicide, Sarah solved all her
problems in one fell swoop: got out of the job she
hated and garnered gobs of media attention as the
patron saint of ethics and as a gutsy fighter against
the "old boys' club" when she dramatically quit,
exposing this man's ethics violations (for which he was
fined).
As Mayor, she had her hand stuck out as far as anyone
for pork from Senator Ted Stevens. Lately, she has
castigated his pork-barrel politics and publicly
humiliated him. She only opposed the "bridge to
nowhere" after it became clear that it would be unwise
not to.
As Governor, she gave the Legislature no direction and
budget guidelines, then made a big grandstand display
of line-item vetoing projects, calling them pork.
Public outcry and further legislative action restored
most of these projects--which had been vetoed simply
because she was not aware of their importance-- but
with the unobservant she had gained a reputation as
"anti-pork".
She is solidly Republican: no political maverick. The
State party leaders hate her because she has bit them
in the back and humiliated them. Other members of the
party object to her self-description as a fiscal
conservative.
Around Wasilla there are people who went to high school
with Sarah. They call her "Sarah Barracuda" because of
her unbridled ambition and predatory ruthlessness.
Before she became so powerful, very ugly stories
circulated around town about shenanigans she pulled to
be made point guard on the high school basketball team.
When Sarah's mother-in-law, a highly respected member
of the community and experienced manager, ran for
Mayor, Sarah refused to endorse her.
As Governor, she stepped outside of the box and put
together of package of legislation known as "AGIA" that
forced the oil companies to march to the beat of her
drum.
Like most Alaskans, she favors drilling in the Arctic
National Wildlife Refuge. She has questioned if the
loss of sea ice is linked to global warming. She
campaigned "as a private citizen" against a state
initiative that would have either a) protected salmon
streams from pollution from mines, or b) tied up in the
courts all mining in the state (depending on who you
listen to). She has pushed the State's lawsuit against
the Dept. of the Interior's decision to list polar
bears as threatened species.
McCain is the oldest person to ever run for President;
Sarah will be a heartbeat away from being President.
There has to be literally millions of Americans who are
more knowledgeable and experienced than she.
However, there's a lot of people who have
underestimated her and are regretting it.
CLAIM VS FACT
*"Hockey mom": true for a few years
*"PTA mom": true years ago when her first-born was in
elementary school, not since
*"NRA supporter": absolutely true
*social conservative: mixed. Opposes gay marriage, BUT
vetoed a bill that would have denied benefits to
employees in same-sex relationships (said she did this
because it was unconstitutional) .
*pro-creationism: mixed. Supports it, BUT did nothing
as Governor to promote it.
*"Pro-life": mixed. Knowingly gave birth to a Down's
syndrome baby BUT declined to call a special
legislative session on some pro-life legislation
*"Experienced": Some high schools have more students
than Wasilla has residents. Many cities have more
residents than the state of Alaska. No legislative
experience other than City Council. Little hands-on
supervisory or managerial experience; needed help of a
city administrator to run town of about 5,000.
*political maverick: not at all
*gutsy: absolutely!
*open & transparent: ??? Good at keeping secrets. Not
good at explaining actions.
*has a developed philosophy of public policy: no
*"a Greenie": no. Turned Wasilla into a wasteland of
big box stores and disconnected parking lots. Is pro-
drilling off-shore and in ANWR.
*fiscal conservative: not by my definition!
*pro-infrastructure: No. Promoted a sports complex and
park in a city without a sewage treatment plant or
storm drainage system. Built streets to early 20th
century standards.
*pro-tax relief: Lowered taxes for businesses,
increased tax burden on residents
*pro-small government: No. Oversaw greatest expansion
of city government in Wasilla's history.
*pro-labor/pro- union. No. Just because her husband
works union doesn't make her pro-labor. I have seen
nothing to support any claim that she is pro-labor/pro-
union.
WHY AM I WRITING THIS?
First, I have long believed in the importance of being
an informed voter. I am a voter registrar. For 10 years
I put on student voting programs in the schools. If you
google my name (Anne Kilkenny + Alaska), you will find
references to my participation in local government,
education, and PTA/parent organizations.
Secondly, I've always operated in the belief that "Bad
things happen when good people stay silent". Few people
know as much as I do because few have gone to as many
City Council meetings.
Third, I am just a housewife. I don't have a job she
can bump me out of. I don't belong to any organization
that she can hurt. But, I am no fool; she is immensely
popular here, and it is likely that this will cost me
somehow in the future: that's life.
Fourth, she has hated me since back in 1996, when I was
one of the 100 or so people who rallied to support the
City Librarian against Sarah's attempt at censorship.
Fifth, I looked around and realized that everybody else
was afraid to say anything because they were somehow
vulnerable.
CAVEATS
I am not a statistician. I developed the numbers for
the increase in spending & taxation 2 years ago (when
Palin was running for Governor) from information
supplied to me by the Finance Director of the City of
Wasilla, and I can't recall exactly what I adjusted
for: did I adjust for inflation? for population
increases? Right now, it is impossible for a private
person to get any info out of City Hall--they are
swamped. So I can't verify my numbers.
You may have noticed that there are various numbers
circulating for the population of Wasilla, ranging from
my "about 5,000", up to 9,000. The day Palin's
selection was announced a city official told me that
the current population is about 7,000. The official
2000 census count was 5,460. I have used about 5,000
because Palin was Mayor from 1996 to 2002, and the city
was growing rapidly in the mid-90's.

great point, but have you looked at what she stands for and what she has done for the state of alaska? her approval ratings? her reform policies? she has done very well. i can see where some might say the short experience time is an issue to them, but she has done a great job at being a leader thus far. if the situation were any different i would understand a little bit more but having barack obama for your democratic PRESIDENTIAL canidate pretty much takes away all credibility... lol
Posted by: tim | Sep 4, 2008 12:43:22 AM

BO has his experience problems as well....

well, by the way you talk i find that hard to believe, but ill take you at your word. if your a rgistered republican, im assuming you are upset with their actions as of late. as am i. but you cant be a republican and actually think obama is a better canidate?! its just not possible. now, that being said, you can be like me and believe mccain IS NOT the best canidate for republicans, but it can ALWAYS be worse. and barack obama would be a nightmare. he is for everything i stand for. i just cant possibly give my vote to someone with his left wing, marxist views.

I've been in academia, here and in Europe, for 40+ years and one skill that, after all that time you can't help but acquire is the ability to assess intelligence after only a short-term interaction with someone.
Sarah Palin might not have an Ivy League degree, but she's a highly intelligent woman. Clearly, also, she is a natural at administration. Believe me, not too many people are gifted in that particular area.

My fellow americans, and dear misguided dumbocrats. Nothing will stop McCain-Palin at this time. This is history in the making, you better get used to it, suck on that for a while. We need much more than a community organizer to deal with today's issues.
Don't waste your vote ... vote AMERICAN ... vote McCain-Palin 2008.

as we know - she were not able to manage, and fire, fire, fired..
In amall city with 7000 people, including infants.
And her 'fight" with Oil bosses was to turn the pipe for her interests, no matter war.

I never said who I was voting for yet....but right now the way this country is in a mess this whole two party system is just screwing everything up.....we cannot get things done in congress because of this crappy system and people like us are the one's that suffer while the DEAD PARTY HEADS just yammer on in DC!

collette...
well i wasnt assuming you were an obama supporter, just that if you compare experience issues, i would rather the v.p be a newcommer, or a little more lacking in that department than the president!!! i can totally understand being an independant, matter of fact i am pretty much the same, i dont like to affiliate with either party. but to be undecided?! what are you undecided about just out of curiosity? i mean obama and mccain are like night and day, as the democrats and republicans are. are you just confuse with the big picture of who you want to give more control to or is it actually a personal debate between obama and mccain you cant decide on?

Excellent Job
The beating her and her family has taken
Over the past few days. Be able to stand on that stage and give a speech to that many people with such poise and Grace. Shows Great Abilities.
She took a licking and Came back Stronger.
We need more real people in Government.
Soccer Moms, Factory Dads, to get a grip back on this Nation.
Need to weed out the elitest Office Holders, who rarely show up for work, when they do don't do the job, Just say they are there.
Obama runs around telling people what he wants them to think, tells them what they need, tells them what he will do.
Dictates their minds. We do not need that and we do not want that. No place for that in America.
Obama wants to make history, be popular and rich, and do what his dad could not.
America Deserves Better than that.
We need someone to listen to us. We tell them what we want.
We The People
All of the People
McCain-Palin all the way!

I am going out on a limb this time and I am going to vote for who I think can get things done for this country, meaning moving across party lines and begin (not possible in 4 years) to lead this nation in the right direction as the greatest nation of the world as we once were. WE CANNOT sit here thinking we are on this world by ourselves. The world's global economy will either have us on top or hanging onto its coat tails. I may not even vote for either one!

I learned NOTHING about what the Republicans stand for only what they are against which is mainly Obama. I had hoped to learn something besides the name of Palin's children.I had hoped to hear something that was meaningful and to tell us where she planned to lead the country.
As the other of two special needs children I find it interesting that she is trying to pander to me. Listen, she has a four month old child. She has not begun to have to fight for services for her child. She has not had to fight school and the state government. Once again talking but having no experience.
Posted by: Cheryl | Sep 4, 2008 12:58:05 AM
I am kinda with Mr. Ventura and others that think in order to get things straight there is going to have to be a politifcal revolution.......abolish the two party system....the world is changing and we cannot sit here and think that this system will continue to work as it has in history...

would someone please tell me exactly what did the dems say at there convention that was specific about what they are going to do. remember they wont get the benefit of financial windfalls that clinton got
Posted by: mark | Sep 4, 2008 1:02:15 AM
Great job "Mitt Romney", you've successfully painted your candidate as the elitist he is with no real experience by which to lead. Palin was poised, pointed, and if I were Obama, I wouldn't underestimate her any longer.
I'm not discounting his education... however, there are a lot of well educated people (even more so than Obama) who are much better suited to teaching in the classroom or the lecture circuit. You've done nothing in your comparison except paint your candidate as an out of touch elitist who appeals to "scholars". I think part of that might be an attempt to puff up your own ego?!?!?!?!?

SO much anger and nastiness on the part of the Obama supporters. It actually is rather amusing. I think that's fright I hear, and hopefully you have good reason to be frightened.
The DNC screwed up this election. I am pro-choice, but far more important is what will happen to our country if Obama gets into office. Sorry, I'm not willing to bow down and just accept him so I can avoid being called a racist. He is inexperienced and - as far as demeanor goes - he is far more like Bush than McCain with his "don't you dare question me" stance.
He is in love with himself; McCain and Palin love our country. We need people who are in this for us. I believe Hillary Clinton had that in common with McCain and Palin, and that was one of the reasons I supported her. That is why I will support McCain and Palin now.
Call me what you will - I'm an Independent - but integrity and a real plan is far more important to me than flashy speeches and someone who won't give a straight answer.

Oh enough with the family being attacked. The Republicans leaked that info to the press. And who was it called Hillary a whiner.
Maybe I don't support Obama but rather support Biden. In any case McCain has been backing up to Bush ever since the Rove machine beathim up in 2000. Futhermore on Palin chosing to deliver a child facing challenges - that was her choice and should not make her a saint. At least she was allowed to make a choice - If Palin had her way women would not have any choice. I might have considered McCain but Palin NO WAY

Heck! The speech and attacks did bring laughs but were was the substance! Anyone of us could have read the speech and deliver it well. I have a problem with her parading those 2 children around like a dog and pony show but oh they are off limits. What a joke! That speech was horrible – Give it to me and I could have aroused a crowd as well and I graduated from Washington U.

I am grateful for Wasilla citizen Anne Kilkerry's comments, even if not the most objective I've read (sounds like the hate is on both sides). But it is good for us to step back and take another look. At any rate, after all the rhetoric, fun and glamor...are Republicans voting for McCain or voting for Palin...for President? It's easy to get caught up in the excitement. So again, I thank Anne Kilkerry for a bit of check and balance.

Palin's appealing in her own way, and she certainly fires up the far-right Republican base. But those are the only people she's firing up. After that standard Republican rant-style speech, moderates and independents are heading for the door. McCain had a choice to make: appeal to moderates or give in to right wing extremists. He blinked, and made the wrong choice.
And why are all the Republican bloggers insisting that Obama supporters are frightened? Haven't they seen the latest polls? I agree that many Obama supporters are shaking.......but it's with laughter over their amazing fortune that McCain would so bungle the VP pick process.
Relief is on the way. Obama/Biden '08. Judgment. Competence.

These posts comparing Obama's and Palin's education/experience seem funny to me. Is Obama running for veep? Is the Obama campaign more comfortable contrasting itself with Palin than with McCain? The Obama campaign better be careful...the inexperience argument works both ways. But with the dems it's at the TOP of the ticket; no kicking of the bucket required. What a weird position the Obama campaign is in right now: criticizing a young, attractive and largely inexperienced political up-and-comer who gives a great speech but is light on real solutions.
Posted by: Steph | Sep 4, 2008 2:08:19 AM
Palin = Obama in age and experience plus good speech. The only different is she is running for VP while he is running for the President. She has time to learn to be President while he has to lead the country at day one if they win.
Posted by: stock_craft | Sep 4, 2008 2:49:00 AM
Palin is a "mutter courage" but a fraud. The speech was not written by her. How can we judge her with a divisive speech written by Mc Cain Campaign attack dogs ?
Posted by: Fred | Sep 4, 2008 3:21:35 AM
Palin is just another Corrupt Republican Politician.
ENOUGH OF REPUBLICAN CORRUPTION!!
This year,
DEMOCRAT ALL THE WAY!!
We like Hillary not Palin.
Hillary is an honorable lady.
Palin is a liar disguised as a Fundamentalist Christian and a woman willing to use her body to get free college. Disgusting!!
Posted by: voter | Sep 4, 2008 3:22:36 AM
Some of the posters on here throw a better smear campaign than the candidates! McCain had used Obama's inexperience as a weapon. Since McCain has chosen Palin as VP, he can no longer make that argument as snidely as before. Everyone that keeps complaining about the candidates not pointedly addressing where they stand on issues.....IT WAS A CONVENTION! The issues for both parties will be discussed during the debates. You cannot deny that Obama lends charisma and enthusiasm to his speeches. I was sorely disappointed in Palin's speech tonight. She reminded me of Dana Carvey's SNL character....the church lady.

Greed - a capital sin of excess.
How greedy to demand the earth's resources for 5 children!
What a terrible choice as your idol for the American family.
Vanity - a captal sin of a desire to be more attractive than others.
What a fruitless role model for American women voters.

Palin is a Eva Peron in Alaska Version.
She is quite strong and attractive... however, she is good for the 3rd world
Thanks , but no thanks for America.
Her vision and world view is ancient and fundamentalist
Palin is perfect in Alaska,
Anyhow, thanks for her drama.
I have so much fun these days....every day something new popping up....

Enrico,
If you want to have only white people in America, why didn't you blame your WHITE ANCESTORS instead?
why did your ancestors in the first place invade the Beautiful Native American's continent?
Why didn't your white ancestors stay in the White Europe?
Posted by: zen | Sep 4, 2008 4:33:25 AM
Looks like she is on the job training.
for one month, she has to stuff all the knowledge of national security and foriegn policy etc.
I think she is smart but not super- smart to digest this within a month before the first debate let alone interview with media.

The Obama goons are crying a river....wha...wha...wha...cry..cry. cry. Governor Palin kicked Obama's white and black *zz.
The democratic party shot themselves in the *zz. They allowed Obama to destroy Hillary not understanding that the time was riped for a woman on the ticket. Bad, bad judgement Obama and democrats.
As a democrat and Hillary supporter, I watched the whole RNC smack down of Obama. Hillary and President Clinton must be somewhere sipping champagne because karma is gooood. Obama NEVER.

Hockey Mom, PTA member. Mayor of 8000 people. Never traveled outside the Country, Not even Canada. Got first Passport in 1997. Governor of Alaska 20 months."
Question:
I have two Ph.Ds, should I become a super President?
LOL. Mr. Find some compelling reasons.

Biden - C's and D's in college. Exception - "A" in PE, "F" in ROTC
Law School - "F" on paper for plagerizing and was almost kicked out. Instead graduated 76th in a class of 85.
