John Berman has been at ABC since 1995, and allowed to appear on television since 2001. He covered the 2008 campaign extensively, following John McCain and Mitt Romney during the primaries and then Barack Obama in the general election. He also spent more than 20 months chasing George W. Bush around the country as a producer from 1999 until 2001, earning the clever nickname, "Pain in the Ass," from our 43rd president. He is a frequent and sometimes welcome contributor to all of ABC's broadcasts.

The Bizarro Convention

September 01, 2008 3:31 PM

Rick Klein, from ABC's The Note: The latest from the weirdest first day of a convention anyone is likely to see for a while . . .

Item One: The convention actually isn't a convention today at all.

Item Two: This morning, the always colorful Karl Rove called Sen. Joe Biden "big, blowhard doofus."

Item Three: Biology as pushback -- the McCain campaign puts out word about the Palin pregnancy.

Maybe it's just as well that this day is lost to the McCain campaign -- and they still have three days to tell the story they hoped to tell in four.

Maybe (as seems to be the case early on) the GOP base will rally around Gov. Palin in this latest revelation.

But how many more weird developments before that becomes the story -- that nothing else can be told this week?

Why not talk about Paul's convention across the river where real issues and problems will be discussed, and solutions, whether you agree or disagree with them, will be given. The RNC will be a bunch of show and no substance unless you are a fan of spreading fear and war. I attended a republican convention in NM, and it was full of talks about killing people in the middle east.

It's a maverick new idea. Why bore the public with four days of this stuff? Heck, let's make a law! Conventions can only be 3 days from now on. Woohoo

At least we know McCain won't don a toga and erect a Greek temple and pretend he's a Greek God.

That much we know for sure.

Thank God that spectacle side show didn't work. Convention bounce = zero.

Tied up again. LOVE IT!

Kitty - How about getting rid of some laws. Politicians seem to justify their positions by making more laws to control us.

The GOP isn't fit to walk in Ron Paul's shadow.

I will be tuning into the Ron Paul convention. C-Span is covering it live. At least it will be interesting.

You forgot items 4 an 5:

4) Palin's husband convicted of DUI

5) Obama taking the high road over the pregnancy cover-up, telling reporters that a family's business and especially their children, are private matters.

For next week, number 6:

6) Palin's disclosure of her daughter's 5th month (or, who knows, perhaps the 4th month) into her 2nd pregnancy has only temporarily distracted the media from the question of the first child, who was born 4 months ago. So the first story is still there, to be exposed soon.

So the GOP convention will end Thursday - the same day Hurricane Hanna's scheduled to slam Georgia of S. Carolina? God sure bracketed them!

Seems like you are missing the big story of the RNC: the police state in which it is illegal to organize for Food Not Bombs, drive a bus from Montana to show off solar technology, or carry a camera to document police activity and suppression of freedom of assembly, freedom from unreasonable search and seizure, and the right to free speech, wouldn't it?

But, that would mean exposing the fascists running this country, wouldn't it? Much more important to investigate a 20-year old DUI, a teenager's pregnancy, and spout Karl Rove gibberish.

I want my airwaves back. You provide no public service.

It occurs to me that one of the main headlines was about the rebranding of the GOP thanks to Gustav. I wonder if an unborn baby hasn't just made that a bit harder. I wonder if that isn't going to remind voters of the scandal ravaged party of 2006.

LiberalTarian - You forgot to mention the latest antics of Lohan and Spears. Surely those events are vital to public discourse. Go Ron Paul!

Now, the truth is starting to come out about the reckless, cavalier, and dangerous decision made by McSame to place Sarah (knock 'em up) Palin on the ticket. If this is the type of decision making to be expected of McSame in the White House, then he is a very dangerous man indeed to even be considered for the presidency. Hopefully, the American people (this doesn't include mentally deranged social conservatives) will wake up and smell the coffee before it's too late. Obama/Biden 08!!!

National Enquirer reporters are in Alaska covering the story. They pay for their information. All will come out just as it did with John Edwards -- never fear.
