John Berman has been at ABC since 1995, and allowed to appear on television since 2001. He covered the 2008 campaign extensively, following John McCain and Mitt Romney during the primaries and then Barack Obama in the general election. He also spent more than 20 months chasing George W. Bush around the country as a producer from 1999 until 2001, earning the clever nickname, "Pain in the Ass," from our 43rd president. He is a frequent and sometimes welcome contributor to all of ABC's broadcasts.

Orrin Hatch: Palin 'Being Set Up'; Ifill 'In the Tank'
October 02, 2008 6:04 PM
Don’t think Republicans are trying to get some mileage out of this (wholly manufactured) Gwen Ifill thing?
This fundraising solicitation just went out from the National Republican Senatorial Committee, signed by Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah.
“Watch out.
“Sarah Palin is being set up.
“The moderator of tonight's debate is in the tank for Obama -- this liberal PBS reporter is releasing a pro-Obama book . . . to debut on inauguration day.
“Joe Biden is receiving debate advice from Hillary Clinton.
“And, Barack Obama's attack machine is gearing up to launch millions of dollars in new ads against Palin.”
Wow -- Hillary Clinton plus liberal reporters? How can a good Republican not open up the money faucet?
Tune into ABC News Now's live debate coverage at 8 pm ET. HERE.

God bless America if Palin wins and God help America if Obama wins!!

Media bias is still more of an issue than the moderator's. Biden can make any number of gaffes (like he has already) and the media won't run it. Palin can make only one, and it will be in three different cover stories on the NYT or CNN.

They have treated Palin awful. The media is a shabbles and I don't trust to many of them

About Palin being set up, I BELIEVE IT, at least as far as the debate is concerned.
REMEMBER: When a referee is fixing a basketball game he doesn't have to control the whole game, he just has to shave 4 or 5 points in the last 2 minutes.
All Ifill needs is one "gotcha" question, well placed, and it will be wallpapered on every liberal media outlet for the next 72 hours. IT'S NOT THAT HARD ESPECIALLY FOR SOMEONE WHO STANDS TO MAKE A MILLION DOLLARS ON AN OBAMA VICTORY IN NOVEMBER

Quota Woman?
Intelectual being compared Coulter?
What different plannets we live in.
Real Sad.
BTW, the news about her book being released was out in July, so it's been known all along.

Why is she being the moderator. She has a conflict of interest.
Posted by: Christie | Oct 2, 2008 6:23:41 PM
We know who Rick Klein is voting for - is it impossible for reporters to be unbiased these days??

"Don’t think Republicans are trying to get some mileage out of this (wholly manufactured) Gwen Ifill thing?"
Wholly manufactured? Are you serious, you don't see any conflict of interest!!!!
I'm sure if Sean Hannity or Laura Ingram were writing Pro McCain Books and they were the moderators there would be hell to pay from the Libs and the media.
Give me a break Rick Klein!!!!!

Imagine if the moderator had written a book about great white heroes and John Mccain was in it....wow I bet ABC would be the first of the liberal media to cry foul.
Katie Couric, Charlie Gibson and Keith Olberman...one and the same.

The dems have spent millions in an attempt to diminish Sarah, so this should surprise who?
Posted by: rover | Oct 2, 2008 6:23:58 PM
The liberal bias of the press is painfully obvious.ABC is getting to be as bad as NBC.The debate is tilted left...obvious except to the liberal left who just see things as fair because they truly can't handle the truth.

This will all be forgotten when Barack Hussein Obama loses in a landslide.

Sure guys - and if Mary Matalin was conducting the debate you'd be SO fair-minded about it. Right? Incredible.

Too bad the McCain camp agreed to the moderators months ago - weeks AFTER Ifill's book went up for preorder. My how the mighty Republicans have fallen, already on damage control before the debate even begins.

So it's OK for Sean Hannity and then Rush Limbaugh to moderate the next two Presidential debates?
Posted by: CrusaderFrank | Oct 2, 2008 6:24:36 PM
Gee, you mean this isn't shuffleboard??
When are the Repubs going to get fire in the belly and come out fighting instead of wussing around. There is plenty to slash and burn about the whole O. resume. Duh!

(1) Gwen Ifill has a book coming out on Inauguration Day. (2) Ifill's book will contain a prominent section on Senator Obama, whose name and no other is featured in the title. (3) If Obama wins, Ifill will sell more books and make more money. People don't buy near as many books about losing candidates. (4) Therefore, Ifill has a financial interest in the outcome of the election.

What do you mean wholly manufactured. Why did not she mention that she had book on the "Age of Obama" and her pie4ces for Essence magazine. I'm sure she will be impartial, Right.
Posted by: Amazed | Oct 2, 2008 6:25:01 PM
I heard Biden has been watching FDRs TV debate tapes from 1929 for pointers....and they call Palin dumb
Posted by: JBauer | Oct 2, 2008 6:25:04 PM
Even the Columbia Journalism Review has - reluctantly - admitted that Ifill has a major conflict here. Let's have some intellectual honesty. She is publishing a book with "the age of Obama" in the title set to be published on inauguration day. For heavens sake to say she has no financial stake in the election outcome is absurd. Perhaps that is why she did not bother to inform the McCain campaign or the CPD of the book. The left was SCREAMING about Armstrong Williams - this is much, much more serious and it is really sad that people are so determined to see him win that ethics, honesty or professionalism are throw away commodities.

If Clinton is prepping Biden, then I realize Clinton must be held by gunpoint. Why in the world would she support this looser and his presidential candidate?

There is something wrong with the media to set up a debate with Ifill releasing a book at the same time favoring Obama. This is an "OUTRAGE", and they need to replace Ifill ASAP!!!!!!Where is fair and equal treatment of both parties, NOT JUST OBAMA's lackies pushing the cart for him.
Get another person to fill Ifills position ASAP!!!!!!!
Posted by: Stephen Lawrence | Oct 2, 2008 6:25:48 PM
the debate hasn't even started yet, and you've been whining for days. obama isn't on the stage tonight, and we can't help it if you guys are backing an incompetent twit for vp... stop whining....
