The One-Way Debate?

October 07, 2008 7:30 PM

Just like last week's vice-presidential debate was all about Sarah Palin, tonight's presidential debate is all about John McCain -- right?

That's the media's judgment, and the very real sense in Nashville. McCain -- by dint of being down in the polls, and telegraphing a newly aggressive approach to the campaign -- seems to have all the pressure on him, to deliver for his base and for the still-moveable independent voters.

A bad McCain night and the narrative could be written for the final 27 days -- not in a way he would like.

True -- to a point. I just spoke with a top Obama adviser who didn't dispute that McCain has more at stake (of course, Obamaland would argue that precise point) but also made an interesting observation: Something north of 50 million people are watching tonight.

Most of them don't care about what the media filter has to say about who has what at stake. Many of them still probably need convincing about Obama, too -- that old "commander-in-chief" threshold we seemed a tad obsessed with just two weeks ago.

Just a thought -- but don’t both candidates have everything at stake every time they debate this late in the election?

Many report the Townhall format is great for McCain. Not sure why they think that because ALL of his town halls were filled with only his supporters. Fox News actually busted him on this issue as are no Democrats and/or independents that attend these faux town halls. Lets hope he gets some REAL questions and provides some REAL answers on the economy.

McCain is floundering.

He blew it BIG TIME by picking Sarah.

BIG. MISTAKE.

Hey Rick: I"m outside the auditorium with my case of McCain coconuts, wax lips, and McCain-Gollum action figures. Security won't let me so please come to the door and pick up the box. Actually, when I asked the nice guard if I could come in he said, "It Depends". Geeze, I forgot that box. Have a nice debate on that McCain whoopee cushion.

Okay, all you in the MSM, do you have your "OBAMA WON!" scripts all ready for tonight's debate round-up?

Posted by: mak | Oct 7, 2008 7:57:40 PM

With early voting in 30 states well under way, including many battle ground states, McCain is in trouble. Even if he has a "game changer" tonight, the ship has boarded and the deck hands are untying her.

Posted by: Paige | Oct 7, 2008 7:57:55 PM

mak - has McCain released his "I won the debate" ad like he did the evening BEFORE the Presidential debate last time? Remember, he was in DC working on the bail-out bill and too concerned with our future to even consider doing more than one thing at once? I mean - we didn't even know if he was going to make it to the debate when he released his ad that he won!

Posted by: Paige | Oct 7, 2008 8:00:35 PM

McCain will come home with a resounding victory. The poll that counts is on Nov 4.

Q:

"Okay, all you in the MSM, do you have your "OBAMA WON!" scripts all ready for tonight's debate round-up?"

A:

McCain ALREADY WON this one too!!!

i would only want to ask one question---why was mccain not tried for tyreason when he was a pow--and was spouting propaganda against the troops and the usa---but the again his father was the admiral in charge of the pacific fleet --and scumbag mccain gpt away with a lot of crap that we would have been executed for.

This debate has the earmarkings of an opportunity for Obama to hog the mic as well as the stage. Even Mr. Brokaw is trying to get across tohim that he is hogging time. He appears to think he is already the president of the United States and no one else gets a chance to talk. That says alot about his character.

Posted by: Melanie | Oct 7, 2008 9:45:10 PM

Obama's ramblings are absurd. He can't answer a question directly. Without a teleprompter he really struggles!

Posted by: tricias_mind | Oct 7, 2008 9:47:10 PM

McCain & Palin RULE>

Posted by: Melanie | Oct 7, 2008 9:47:31 PM

Can anyone tell me why McCain walked across the stage behind Obama and raise his hand at someone? Looked odd to me.

Posted by: Sloaned | Oct 7, 2008 9:52:20 PM

McCain has not given us a straight answer yet. Come on "Friends" wake up and smell the coffee.

Posted by: amtnbkr | Oct 7, 2008 9:54:05 PM

Obama is the most mundane, boring person in politics. As soon as he starts talking he loses my attention.
What a fool.

Posted by: ml | Oct 7, 2008 10:03:05 PM

Instead of everyone fighting the need to try to get along and quit picking on each other. If you listen to ABC CBS and NBC Obama won the election along time ago they all don't even give McCain
a chance they want him to loose. If they want to fix the economy they need to get gas back to $1.50 or less and Deisel which is the scrap of gas less than $1.25 which is what gets you all your goods this will fix 85% of the economy because it is reduiculas that milk is $5.00 a gallon and a bag of tators are $6.00 a bag or higher people could spend their hard earned money on more than trying to just survive and put it back in the economy.

Posted by: Shannon | Oct 7, 2008 10:05:15 PM

Definitely hogging the stage, time, and microphone. He should have been an actor instead of a politician. Maybe they'll give him a square with his name in Hollywood. It would be nice if he would let McCain speak also.

Posted by: Melanie | Oct 7, 2008 10:06:20 PM

ACORN was busted in Nevada today... this has OBAMA written all over it. He has funneled millions of dollars into this lame organization. Now he will cry racism when we start asking him questions about ACORN...What a poser.
NOT QUALIFIED TO BE PRESIDENT.

Posted by: ml | Oct 7, 2008 10:07:33 PM

tom brokow has stooped to new lows in pres. debates by giving mccain more time than Obama 38% in the first 10 minutes and cut off and reprimanded obama for it !! What is going on?? very unfair and NOT neutral. I do not like it and see the truth clearly that is a one sided debate

Posted by: paul mitchell | Oct 7, 2008 10:08:20 PM

You Obama supporters really think its the responsibility of the US to provide health insurance to the millions of illegals as well as the jihadists who have taken up residence in our country? You'll be waiting much longer for doctor appointments. What a crazy "plan"

Posted by: tricias_mind | Oct 7, 2008 10:09:11 PM

Definitely a poser. Yeah he will use the racism thing every time he can. Not qualified for much at all.

Posted by: Melanie | Oct 7, 2008 10:10:46 PM

Can McCain answer a question with a believeable statement? He makes too many generalization's that mean nothing to me or you if you are really listening who feels Obama is rambling. I am sick of him a POW feeling like he has the answers to the problems in Iraq.
We never should have been in Iraq in the first place. Osama was never in Iraq.He should retire from politics with his head hanging low.

Posted by: Sharn | Oct 7, 2008 10:11:21 PM

Tom Brokaw is tripping how can you not allow them to debate. If you have a statement that is not clear why is he preventing a response from either candidate. I want to hear what they have to say.

Posted by: Sharon | Oct 7, 2008 10:17:03 PM

Obama knows nothing about war and being in a war and fighting for the United States. He has no loyalty to the United States and is n fact anti-American. How can Americans even think about having someone like this as president. It is insulting and unbelievable. Remember 9-11. How soon they forget.

Posted by: Melanie | Oct 7, 2008 10:18:02 PM

MCcain is NOT QUALIFIED TO BE PRESIDENT either he cant even comb his own hair HE IS TO OLD and there is about a 35% chance he will die in office so is Palin QUALIFIED TO BE PRESIDENT either??? NOT!!
there is no right answer we are screwed ! but I do know what I don't like, more of the same bushish dictator like president and that is what we will have in mccain

Posted by: pm | Oct 7, 2008 10:23:36 PM

You all talk about Mccain not being able to talk listen to Obama he has to think about everything before he can speek McCain speeks well and with inteligence!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: shannon | Oct 7, 2008 10:24:15 PM

Fool? Idiot? Come on now intelligent people of America. Can we argue about the issues? Neither candidate is a fool nor idiot. I know who I'm voting for, Obama hands-down, but I don't throw mud on the less-than-favorable candidate, I throw out facts on why I think he is the best candidate for the times in which we are living. Please let's raise the bar here.

Posted by: Maureen | Oct 7, 2008 10:26:49 PM

Some of the questions ased tonight have not been answered by either party. McCain has once again shown America how low he will go to prove he really don't get it. He is so out of touch with Americans, his hero's are dead president. We are alive and living in the real world.

Posted by: GMSTAN | Oct 7, 2008 10:27:20 PM

Your grammar is something else and yet you disqualify McCain because he's grey haired? Pullease.

Now, I'll ask you--do you really believe its the responsibility of the US to provide health insurance for the millions of illegals and potential jihadists who have taken up residence in our country? Do you realize how LONG you'll be waiting for a doctor appointment? That's nuts!

Posted by: tricias_mind | Oct 7, 2008 10:27:21 PM

and the Palins belong to the alaska independence movement now that is unamerican!! NOW that is terrorism

Posted by: pm | Oct 7, 2008 10:27:25 PM

Interesting, isn't it, that no pro-Obama people on this board will answer my question about illegals and Obama's plans.

Posted by: tricias_mind | Oct 7, 2008 10:28:45 PM

Rember when you point a finger at someone tellint them that they are fool or an idiot you have three fingers pointing back at you. How can you vote for someone that has not been in politics for only a few years does the word Oboma not ring a bell.

Posted by: shannon | Oct 7, 2008 10:32:08 PM

The real problem with health care is almost 40 percent of the cost is malpractice related. Suing your doctor is more profitable than being a major CEO.......that's not right

Posted by: ss | Oct 7, 2008 10:32:11 PM

VERY INTERESTING INDEED.

Posted by: prt | Oct 7, 2008 10:36:38 PM

Well,prt...answer my question. And after answering the one on health care for illegals are you prepared to pay so every individual in the US who wants to go to college is able?
Obama thinks everything FREE is a right. You'll be paying for it.

Posted by: Melanie | Oct 7, 2008 10:43:10 PM

You ask about illegals and Obama's plans what has McCain said he was going to do about illegals. NOTHING! What is your real issue with illegals all of us at one time or another was an illegal.

Posted by: Sharon | Oct 7, 2008 10:43:39 PM

What happened with the cameras after the debate?? Did I switch to the Obama Show? They couldn't get a sot of Senator McCain? I only saw the Obamas holding court.....

I am so displeased at this whole election it saddens me and makes us look bad to the rest of the world.
Now I know why we are referred to as "stupid Americans"

Posted by: samy | Oct 7, 2008 10:46:17 PM

Wow, and America says racism is not an issue. Why don't you just call Obama an ignorant n*****, be upfront, that would be much better.

Posted by: Kaiya | Oct 7, 2008 10:46:49 PM

lame brain drain infomercial freebee!!
did we learn anything that hasnt already been covered in some ad?

Posted by: Nancy | Oct 7, 2008 10:51:01 PM

Who said anything about expecting either candidate to do anything TO illegals? I asked if you think its our responsibility to GIVE health insurance and college educations to them, among other things? My problem with illegals is they're illegal. I've never been illegal, never sneaked across the border. Nice try.

Posted by: tricias_mind | Oct 7, 2008 10:51:46 PM

Tricia,
What would you like answered? I'm not saying I'm for Obama, but you have something against illegals, my father is a 1st generation American from Ethiopia, he was a judge, what would you like to know, since you don't like illegals and most are ethic minorities in your opinion.

Posted by: Kaiya | Oct 7, 2008 10:53:02 PM

no JUST the ones born here deserve health care and college and welfare ...and yes college or we will not be able to compete in this future world

Posted by: prt | Oct 7, 2008 10:55:03 PM

Do you know the definition of illegal?

Posted by: tricias_mind | Oct 7, 2008 10:56:17 PM

They can't GIVE everything. We'll be paying for it.

Posted by: tricias_mind | Oct 7, 2008 10:59:00 PM

If you didn't sneak across someone in your family did don't deny it. As long as the legals get to have health insurance and go to college what difference does it make. I went to college and paid for it. I don't think this is the big ticket item. Who is going to pay for your retirement once the market keeps tanking? That should be the immediate concern not how long you wait to be seen by a doctor and I too am legal no boats of fences in my life. YOU ARE A RACIST!

Posted by: Sharon | Oct 7, 2008 10:59:33 PM

I don't say people have to have been born here to qualify but they should at least go through the process of citizenship.

Just had to come away from the other tube and come in and post LOL. Why does John McCain look so crabby that move he almost made when Obama went to shake Cindy Mccains hand what the hell was that all about someone please give that tired old crabass some stewed prunes he'll be right as rain by the next debate IF he gets his nap.

Posted by: faxbot | Oct 7, 2008 11:00:46 PM

Typical liberal - can't express herself without raging.

Posted by: tricias_mind | Oct 7, 2008 11:02:31 PM

Tricia,
Does it bother you? Do you know that not many illegal aliens get food stamps nor medicaid? They work, some pay taxes, yes under false ss#'s, but they pay taxes. They do not get hand outs, that is a gross misrepresentation of the gov't. They do not take jobs from Americans, they work jobs we don't want to work. So, what seems to be your issue? and do you know exactly how long it can take to become a US citizen?

Posted by: Kaiya | Oct 7, 2008 11:08:13 PM

Why did the "independant" people at the debate - the people who were supposedly undecided - why did many of them want pictures with Barack Obama and Michelle Obama??? Especailly the Afro-American "Independants." Give me a Break!!! Wake up American - becareful what you wish for or vote for???

Posted by: eric Newton | Oct 7, 2008 11:09:10 PM

Shame on you, ABC.

Your liberal bias came through loud and clear, even with your coverage of the room AFTER the debate ended. Had McCAIN already left the building or something? All you were showing was OBAMA's brainless grin! And according to your idiot DIANE SAWYER, and the bought-and-paid-for clown GEORGE STEPHANOPOLUS (Clinton's Press Secretary, the son he always wanted but never had) OBAMA won the debate? What stupidity. I suppose you'll try and minimize McCAIN's saying that he'd buy up all those mortgages. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT NONSENSE. This was a "Town Hall" debate, and McCAIN won it on "Main Street, USA".

Again, shame on you ABC!

Posted by: Lucy | Oct 7, 2008 11:13:26 PM

Currently there aren't many freebies for illegals. We'll see how much you giggle when your paycheck decreases due to taxes pulled from it to support free health care. And please stop the moaning about illegals and citizenship when you address me. The issue I wrote of is Obama's plan to have the average Joe kick out part of their wages to fund programs for freebies.

Posted by: tricias_mind | Oct 7, 2008 11:13:29 PM

Last but not least you who call Obama a ignorant n***** need to be for real. Ignorant doesn't attend Harvard and graduate at the top of his class. Ignorance in on you first for calling Obama a N***** and second for calling him ignorant know your facts.

John McCain showed his true colors tonight. Just how sarcastic can one man get? He has no respect for anyone. And all that standing and walking around while Senator Obama was speaking. It was just a ploy to get the people to look at him and not listen to what Obama had to say. Senator Obama showed John McCain respect by sitting and listening, yes listening, and not moving around like McCain did. Maybe he had to go to the bathroon. McCain knows he can not win this election, so he is acting like a spoiled child. Let's attack and lie about Obama's character because we sure can't win on the issues. Senator Obama has more poise and grace and respect, then McCain or even Sarah Palin will ever have. Get a grip John. You and Sarah need to go home where you belong. We don't need the likes of you and Sarah running this country.

Posted by: Wake up America | Oct 7, 2008 11:45:23 PM

Gee, Wake up America, couldn't you have come up with a few more sarcastic and rude remarks while you're trying to tell us you admire the candidate with the most "poise, grace, and respect"?

I heard McCain say it again tonight. The words that make me just absolutely freak out!! He said that he would give every taxpayer 5,000 dollars to buy their own health insurance. What about me?? I'm currently disabled and not paying taxes right now. What about my brother? He's unemployed right now and not paying taxes. Does he qualify for McCain's money? My brother is a 16 year cancer survivor of Non=Hodgkins Lymphoma. He was given a 5% chance of living. The treatment almost killed him,but he kept working so he could have health insurance. Now, due to the effects of some of his treatment he needs a second hip replacement. He's only 48. He recently lost his job because of his health problems. Then, not long after he got his COBRA, his previous employer changed to a cheaper insurance which left him out in the cold with no health insurance. Now how is he supposed to get his operation so he can go back to work?
What about all the other homeless and unemployed in this country?? They're not currently paying taxes. Do they get McCain's money? Believe me, there are a lot of people out there who would much rather be working and paying taxes but can't because of serious medical problems they can't get treated. Many people are homeless andjobless today because of mental illness. There just isn't enough places available for treatment. I think if the government would provide adequate free care for them it would get back tenfold for their investment. Then there would be happy functioning and working people paying taxes. Now, if we could just get back those jobs from overseas! Obama is just the man to get it done! Barack Obama - Your country needs you NOW!

Posted by: Cindy | Oct 7, 2008 11:54:10 PM

Cindy, have you read up on Obama's healthcare plan? He provides no funding for more medical facilities to be built in the first few years of his program. Yet intends to see to it that every illegal in the nation, terrorists and all, get free care. Guess what that means? Those doctors people can't get into now, will have even longer waiting lists. That's no solution.

Posted by: tricias_mind | Oct 8, 2008 12:00:41 AM

tricias,
There was no sarcasium to my remarks. They are all true. If you watched the debate tonight you saw John McCain do everything I said. John McCain was rude and sarcastic to Senator Obama. And because he is losing this race he is acting like a spoiled child. Tricias, sweetie, get a grip.

McCain is incompetent,
You are absolutely right. How can anyone not see how plastic John McCain and Sarah Palin are. They don't have the country's best interests at heart, they have their own best interests at heart. If they didn't Sarah Palin would not let John McCain be using her like he is and John McCain would not be exploiting her like he is. America needs to wake up and see who John McCain and Sarah Palin really are.

Posted by: Wake up America | Oct 8, 2008 12:14:51 AM

Each candidate is intelligent, educated, and experienced. The election is about policies and choosing which ones we deem best. Its a pretty serious responsibility. Our decisions effect the rest of the world, not to mention will be our heritage for those who follow behind in our footsteps.

Cindy, read up on his plan. Millions of illegals are represented in his plan to disperse healthcare and "terrorists" who have taken up residence here are included. Instead of putting me down, take a look at it.

Obama has said, proudly and often, “I am going to give health insurance to 47 million Americans who are now without coverage.” But are the “Americans?”

That 47 million statistic includes illegal immigrants.

tricias,
You are right about electing a canidate who is best for the job. Someone who will be responsiable for all the people, not just some. And John McCain is not that someone. He does not have the poise and character to run this country. If he can get sarcastic and condescending in just a debate because things are not going his way, I would hate to see what would happen at a meeting with a foreign leader of another country if things did not go his way. Take a good hard look at the candidates you seem to be supporting.

You talk to me like a child and suddenly want me to respect your last post?

Posted by: tricias_mind | Oct 8, 2008 12:44:49 AM

McVey was AMERICAN a VETERAN who blew up a building that killed innocent people including children in OKLA CITY in 1993
McVey was trained by a secret state militia under Reagan's and Bush Sr. watch who also sold weapons to IRAN!! they also started this whole business of deregulation that has led to the current economic situation.

SO who is protecting and breeding TERRORISTS???
who has really destabilized this country?

No tricias it's up to you. I'm not asking you to respect my post and I don't think you are a child, just someone who has been blinded by people who will stop at nothing to get what they want. And in the process say and do anything to get there. All I said was maybe you need to take a good hard look at the candidates you are supporting. What you do with that is up to you.

I said you talked to me like a child...like a child would talk. Now suddenly another personality emerges but you still imply I'm an idiot.
Regardless of your opinion, the candidates are all intelligent, experienced, and educated. If that,in your opinion, makes me blinded for saying so, so be it.

Wow tricias you are as good as John McCain and Sarah Palin at twisting peoples words. Hope you have a good night.

Good night to all!

Posted by: Wake up America | Oct 8, 2008 1:09:08 AM

NOW what are you talking about?

Posted by: tricias_mind | Oct 8, 2008 1:09:52 AM

tricias I did not say that the candidates were not intelligent, educated and experienced. I think they are all that and more. But all I said and I will say it again that I do not think John McCain is the right one to run our country. Look back at my blogs and you will see why. So again you have twisted my words.

Posted by: Wake up America | Oct 8, 2008 1:17:10 AM

You're using the wrong term there, I haven't twisted anything. You call me blinded, without merit. So again, what are you talking about? What words of your's have I twisted?

Posted by: tricias_mind | Oct 8, 2008 1:20:05 AM

tricias We may not agree on who is the best person to run this country but let's agree that we both want what's best for our country. Have a good night!

Posted by: Wake up America | Oct 8, 2008 1:21:02 AM

I figured you wouldn't be able to answer me. :o) Goodnight.
