Chief Justice Roberts Flubs Oath

January 20, 2009 12:44 PM

Some conservative Web sites are already saying President Obama flubbed the oath of office.  And
it certainly wasn't smooth. But it appears it wasn't his fault, but that of Chief Justice John Roberts.

This is what Roberts was supposed to ask Mr, Obama to repeat:

"That I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States."

Instead, Justice Roberts said, "That I will execute the office to President to the United States, faithfully."

Justice Roberts misplaced the "faithfully," and added a weird "to" in there as well.

Let's see who gets the blame among the various blogs and sites out there.

It was not a big deal he is human and that is what I want in a President.
HUMAN!!

Wonderful speech by Obama, however, he was incorrect in stating that 44 men have taken the oath of office, the correct number is, in fact, 43. Grover Cleveland was the 22nd and 24th president of the United States, one man taking the presidential oath twice. That's makes 43 men taking the oath, not 44. Surprised the historian didn't catch that mistake.

Oh, c'mon now, it's just a few words. He shouldn't have gotten it wrong. He is a 'genius'!

Spin, spin. Do you ever get tired of spinning for this guy? Newsflash..He's human and makes mistakes. Come on, you don't have to throw other people under the bus to make him look good. He made a mistake it happens.

It sounds to me like he was including himself saying something like "now 44 men have taken the oath of office". Since he's the 44th. I don't know though.

Regardless of who's fault it was, I thought it was funny, it made Obama look human and that doesn't happen often.

Posted by: samhiguchi | Jan 20, 2009 12:59:08 PM

Who cares whose fault it was, they are both only human.

Posted by: AnaB | Jan 20, 2009 1:00:18 PM

Sorry folks the man is still President. I am more concerned about the apparent take down of Jill Biden as PRESIDENT OBAMA (I just love the sound of it)was making his way to the podium.
Just heard also that Chief Justice did correct himself.

yes we are all human. Just some thoughts --- how come everyone makes fun of Bush's speeches yet we can pass this for Obama? Hhmmm.

An oath is a commitment from the soul. A Speech is a series of statement to outline tactics to meet an objectives.

Posted by: George C | Jan 20, 2009 1:07:40 PM

The above post is correct - including Obama, there have only been 43 different presidents (because of Grover Cleveland counting twice). Not Obamas fault but a schoolboy mistake for the speechwriter.

Posted by: David | Jan 20, 2009 1:09:09 PM

Correct Obama is the 43rd president. And we will soon have a 43rd Super Bowl, cool coincidence isn't it!

Posted by: pt | Jan 20, 2009 1:13:39 PM

Obama's not my man, but that was clearly Robert's fault. Oh well, everyone knew what was meant and it all worked out. No let's hope he can break the vicious cycle of American's increasing dependance on government. If he can do that, then I'll be singing his praises too.

Hey, I figured this out first, and am a conservative blogger.

Did you set the record straight on how Sarah Palin was right about the "Bush Doctrine," and Charlie Gibson was soobmishly and arrogently wrong in claiming that it was preemptive war?

Posted by: William Wallace | Jan 20, 2009 1:17:38 PM

William,
Give it up, palin will be going down the same road as dan quayle did after he spelled potato wrong...

Posted by: pt | Jan 20, 2009 1:19:41 PM

pt, except Palin correctly defined the "Bush Doctrine" as defined in the liberal "New York Times", and Charlie Gibson was blaming Bush for the idea of pre-emptive war, which, as a doctrine, existed before Bush.

Posted by: William Wallace | Jan 20, 2009 1:21:13 PM

Even Bush can get the oath of office right. Time to put Bush back in charge until we get a leader, not this media invention. This FRAUD. This empty suited "Messiah".

It's like opening a window on a beautiful Spring day to let the stale air out after 8 years.

Please bear in mind that I am lifelong Republican when you read the rest of this. Roberts had precisely one job to do today: READ one simple sentence. And he blew it. This is a metaphor for the whole past two years or so: The endless incompetence of the Bush Administration juxtaposed with a Democrat opposition (now in power) that is literally speechless in its disbelief that such a pack of incompetents is actually running the country.

Note that defenders of Bush will, for the next fifty or sixty years, point to the Roberts appointment as one of the great triumphs of the Administration! Once every four years he will be called on to avoid flubbing the sentence that we had to memorize in Sixth Grade Civics class.

Roberts sabotaged this historic moment on purpose. Since the first sound recording of a U.S. presidential inauguration, has the CJ ever flubbed the oath before? Roberts is a dyed-in-the-wool partisan and it is no surprise that he would inject a mistake into the oath so that video and sound recordings of this great moment in American history would be marred. This is classic "rat-f*cking" in the grand tradition of Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Atwater and Rove. Of course, video of the swearing in will now be unusable in the President's re-election campaign in 2012. It is sad. Roberts displayed his own racism today. Honest Americans should remember this in the future when they vote for their Senators. We need the Senate to approve Justices to the Supreme Court who serve justice, not partisan dirty tricks.

"Even Bush can get the oath of office right."

Yep, and that's about the only thing he got right.

Democrat Culture of Corruption - Your name suits you perfectly because it tells everyone who reads your comment what you are - a CORRUPT Democrat who is bitter and angry and probably a racist in the truest sense of the word. You can't change; you won't change and you seem to want everyone to feel as you do. Well, guess what? A vast number of Americans DON'T FEEL AS YOU DO. You can be miserable ALL BY YOURSELF. The REST OF US are rejoicing in AMERICA'S NEW PRESIDENT on this historic occasion. God bless you anyway.

"Oh, c'mon now, it's just a few words. He shouldn't have gotten it wrong. He is a 'genius'!"

John Roberts is a genius? In any case, you sure aren't. Nor are any of the other right wing anuses, like William Wallace, "Democrat Culture of Corruption", or George C.

It's just like ABC News to paint over history with a bottle of white out.

Watch the video!

The first phrase was supposed to be:

"I, Barack Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear..."

But Obama began repeating immediately after his name was said. He was TALKING OVER Roberts who was saying "do solemnly swear."

Then, after that, Roberts forgot the word "faithfully" and haplessly added it to the end of the sentence. Did Obama's error cause Roberts to screw up too? We will never know.

Compare Obama's oath with Biden's. The pause occurs AFTER "do solemnly swear."

Fact, boys and girls, OBAMA FLUBBED HIS OATH.

So what? As an Army officer, I have read oaths of office to hundreds of officers and noncommissioned officers. I have screwed up. They have screwed up. It's all part of the fun and games of the ceremony.

Conservative bloggers jump all over it. Welcome to the club. After years of you endlessly making fun of Bush's gaffs, it's sauce for the goose.

But already with Obama's FIRST WORDS as president, we have the news media covering up his mistakes, leftists making excuses about his mistakes, recriminations, and conspiracy theories that Roberts "meant" to mess it up.

You are sad and pathetic people both for electing this mouthbreather to office and for denying reality right before your eyes!

I anxiously await the first liberal to read what I wrote, watch the videos, and come back here to accept cold, hard reality.

Posted by: POWinCA | Jan 20, 2009 2:10:22 PM

POWinCA: When Obama starts making mistakes (and telling lies) that get large numbers of people killed, get back to me with your pitiful complaints, OK?

Posted by: Meteor Blades | Jan 20, 2009 2:21:48 PM

Mmmm...lay down and accept this cold, hard reality, baby.

Accept it in your mouth.

Okay, okay, I'm done.

But...REALLY??? All ready with Obama's first words we have crackpots jumping on ABC's newsblogs to call the president of these United States a mouthbreather.

Fact, lads and ladies, POWinCA has a cold, hard rod stuck up his ***.
