John Berman has been at ABC since 1995, and allowed to appear on television since 2001. He covered the 2008 campaign extensively, following John McCain and Mitt Romney during the primaries and then Barack Obama in the general election. He also spent more than 20 months chasing George W. Bush around the country as a producer from 1999 until 2001, earning the clever nickname, "Pain in the Ass," from our 43rd president. He is a frequent and sometimes welcome contributor to all of ABC's broadcasts.

McCain the Underdog

January 20, 2009 8:31 AM

Does anyone else out there think McCain still has a chance?  His people always say he is at his best when people count him out.

Yes. John McCain has a choice to make. He can fade into history, or he can have a major influence on the Obama administration by using his status as the Republican nominee and his reputation as a maverick to supply the vote needed to overcome Republican filibusters on legislation where is input has been heard.

a chance at what?........If you're trying to add another point of view for today at least put some effort into it.

Sorry. I'll never forgive McCain for shoving Palin down our throats.

Yes I do think he's got a chance as long as he doesn't pick some off the wall low class hillbilly for a running mate................... OOPS!!! Forget it. GAME OVER.

This is a joke, right? Obama is in for eight years without a sweat.

McCain could become a kingmaker in the Senate. He just needs to spearhead two or three of the remaining moderate Republican senators along with two or three of the Blue Dog democrats into a Senate coalition and he will dictate what makes it through the Senate or not. No question on that.

Chance at running for president in 2012? No way. He missed his chance when Rove sucker punched him in 2000.

Could you imagine if McCain had been at the helm of that huge swell of global and national support instead of Bush on 9/11? How much better would Afghanistan and Iraq have turned out with a pro in charge? But his time has past. After 8 years of destroying everything - militarily, diplomatically, even administratively - it'll be awhile before we need a warrior in the White House.

I would hope so - unfortunately the religious right - with their chosen candidate whom they supported against Senator McCain - forced the Senator to be "the good republican" and stop fighting for his vision. I am sure they dangled possible future support for the presidency - Only he had to wait until, after President Bush and Vice President Cheney left. With this vague promise hinting they would support him once the Bush/Cheney ticket were no longer eligible for office. Then the RNC threw Senator McCain to the dogs - with little money - little support, little platform and very little chance to win. Senator McCain would have been better off as a Democrat. At least he could have maintained his beliefs. This was a truly despicable, this act, what they did to this man. Can he still win. Can the Senator succeed? Only if the RNC and the religious right haven't destroyed his faith in mankind.

What an asinine comment from Berman. A real pro and gentleman he is. To continue to make fun of McCain is low-class and a cheap shot. I wonder how history will remember this reporter. Oh wait, they won't. Just a fly on the wall with a BlackBerry. I love his bio, "allowed to appear on television since 2001". Considering his snide juvenile remark, Papa ABC might want to punish little John till he learns some respect.
