John Berman has been at ABC since 1995, and allowed to appear on television since 2001. He covered the 2008 campaign extensively, following John McCain and Mitt Romney during the primaries and then Barack Obama in the general election. He also spent more than 20 months chasing George W. Bush around the country as a producer from 1999 until 2001, earning the clever nickname, "Pain in the Ass," from our 43rd president. He is a frequent and sometimes welcome contributor to all of ABC's broadcasts.

The Demi & Ashton Factor
January 19, 2009 4:39 PM
I didn’t think I would even submit a second post before tomorrow, but the events of the day demanded it.
ABC’s Senior Galactic Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi directed my attention to Oprah, who is hosting her show from the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Oprah opened by acknowledging the historic nature of this week, the transformational moment in the growth of America, the sheer exhilaration of witnessing such a defining, dramatic event.
And then she introduced her first guests: Demi and Ashton.
Once again ladies and gentleman: Demi and Ashton.
Am I being unfair? Were they at the Gettsyburg Address and the “I Have a Dream Speech,” and somehow someone just forgot to tell me?
Share this moment in history with Demi and Ashton. I guess it could be worse. I really did like “St. Elmo’s Fire.”

This nation is so messed up. We idolize people like Demi and Ashton.. and pin our hopes on someone with no track record, like Obama. We are really a nation that's lost it's footing. Our leaders no longer have experience or a track record.. and we don't care, as long as they feed us the bull we crave. We idolize the wrong people, look to the government when they've never shown an ounce of competence.. and somehow expect good results. If it wasn't so damn sad, it would be funny.

I'm having deja vu..... it's the Clinton years all over again... D.C. overrun by full-of-themselves celebrities who think they know what's best for the American people. It's bad enough that the politicians think we can't take care of ourselves.

What to say about celebrity endorsement of political campaigns. Lets be fair, several celebrities have made decent political figures. Lets avoid Reagan . I'm a bit right wing ( and I like action movies..) so I'll lean towards the Governator, and Clint Eastwood. As for Oprah, well, lets take a look at her "constituants": I'll give her credit, she is a fantastic purveyor of her ideas and ideals. Unfortunately the bulk of her audience is the daytime t.v. lowest common denominator. In addition, it seems to me that they are becoming the majority, Am I the only one who thought the movie Idiocracy rang true? Demi and Ashton? Well, I enjoyed Demi in Striptease, Ashton: I suppose that 70's show could only last so long. Who won American Idol, or So You Think You Can Dance this year? Clearly a more current, and viable figurehead,

Why should we listen to Demi and Ashton? Who are they - they and all other celebrities are the worst examples of materialism...they need to practice what they preach...they along with Oprah could pay the cost of the inagaural. I am excited for our country and wish Obama the best...but Hollywood needs to stay out---when they give up their mansions, hummers, private jets, and indulgent life styles will I support their initiatives..
