Cindy McCain's $313,000 Outfit

September 05, 2008 2:13 PM

ABC News' Bianna Golodryga reports: Most fashion experts will tell you that Cindy McCain looked like a million bucks during this week's Republican National Convention. In reality, it was more like $313,000.

Nm_cindy_mccain_080905_main We've been reminded time and time again that the potential first lady is also heiress to a beer distribution fortune valued at as much as $100 million.

According to Vanity Fair magazine, one ensemble worn last week by McCain was valued at over $300,000. That's nearly $100,000 more than the median price of a U.S. home today.

The article describes what McCain and first lady Laura Bush wore Sept. 1, the first day of the Republican convention. Both women, who are fans of designer-to-the-stars Oscar de la Renta, wore suits from his label, priced between $2,500 and $3,000. But when it comes to jewelry, McCain far outshone Bush, wearing four-strand pearl necklaces valued at $11,000 to $25,000 and a stunning pair of three-carat diamond earnings with an appraised value of $280,000.

The article focuses on the lavish and expensive style McCain openly exhibits time and time again during public appearances, and compares it to that of Michelle Obama's. You'll recall that the McCain team has labeled Barack Obama as an arugula-eating elitist. Following that assertion, team Obama picked up on the fact that Senator McCain did not know how many homes he owns (We later found out it was 8). The article questions whether Cindy McCain's expensive taste and lifestyle comes off as hypocritical, and if it damages the Republican's claim that they are more in touch with average Americans.

In a June interview with Vogue magazine, McCain said that she preferred suits made by the German designer Escada, which run around $3,000. She went on to say that if she became first lady, she would consider switching to American designer Carolina Herrera, whose suits go for roughly the same price.

At the same time, Obama also won rave reviews for the blue dress she wore the night of her speech during the Democratic convention. but unlike McCain's designer frock, Obama's was designed by a lesser known designer Obama has long been a fan of. Maria Pinto, a former Geoffrey Beene assistant was been a favorite of Michelle Obama's for a long time, and has designed many of the suits she's worn along the campaign trail. One dress worn during a stump in June was valued at around $900. (A hefty price most working class women would not be able to afford either.)

But despite attracting tabloid fodder, how relevant is the issue? Does the American voter really care about how much money first ladies spend on their wardrobes. Looking back through history, and reviewing former and hopeful first ladies, the answer is: not really.

First off, expensive taste has applied to both parties. The most famous first lady that comes to mind is Jackie Kennedy. American men wanted to be with her, while women, wanted to BE her -- talk like her, travel like her, decorate like her, and yes… DRESS like Jackie O.

She transformed the White House from the drab Eisenhower style, to the classiest residence in the world. She introduced the world to Camelot and its expensive closet, which included frocks from some of the world's most elite designers: Oleg Cassini, Herbert de Givenchy, Christian Dior and Pierre Cardin. We later found out that her lavish spending, while drawing the awe and admiration of millions, also drew the ire of her husband, who repeatedly warned her that her privileged lifestyle could alienate her from her adoring public.

And Jackie wasn’t the only one. Nancy Reagan also had a penchant for expensive clothes and jewelry. Her inaugural gown was valued at $25,000.

And how about Teresa Heinz Kerry, whose estimated net worth is five times that of Cindy McCain's? She is constantly seen in designer suits, is said to be a slave to cashmere, and has her own private plane.

Vanity Fair picks up on McCain's three-carat diamond earrings, but when it comes to diamond studs, Nancy Pelosi doesn't hide her Tahitian pearl necklaces or diamond earrings when speaking about Americans losing their jobs in a weak economy.

Let's face it, whether we like it or not, most presidential hopefuls, their wives, and even high-ranking politicians, can afford things that the average American cannot. And that notion seems to have been accepted by the general public. In fact, there seems to be more criticism and attention drawn to women with a questionable sense of fashion (think Barbara Bush, Hillary Clinton), than those with an expensive one.

As popular women's apparel line Alice + Olivia owner and designer Stacey Bendet told me, "I think the first lady should look first class. I love fabulous earrings...I don't want to stare at a first lady in a frumpy suit. She represents our country and should be a style inspiration."

Selling that point to the general public (and media) may be a little more difficult however, when the nation faces its highest unemployment rate in five years.

Doesn't Bianna ever report any real news?

The fashion industry needs to come to this woman's rescue. This is the UGLIEST dress ever put together, and looks even uglier on a blond for crying out loud. WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE BURN THIS DRESS???

Posted by: AC | Sep 5, 2008 2:24:05 PM

She should have saved her money, you can put lipstick on a pig it's still a pig. Perhaps a mask would help more than clothes, nothing can detract from her wax like cold frightening appearance.

Posted by: Hege! | Sep 5, 2008 2:25:13 PM

So, the woman has money and dresses accordingly. Maybe should should stop by her local Walmart and pick up something people would like better. *sigh* She has never made an effort to hide either her dress sense or her wealth. Maybe if so many people on this site weren't so jealous of people with money, there wouldn't be so much overt hostility in your caustic, churlish remarks. You all need to focus on something real in this election.

I thought I heard somewhere that Cindy McCain's father work for the mob at one time? And didn't he serve prison time? How would a convicted felon be given the job he got after prison? Would every felon be able to get that job?

Posted by: SB | Sep 5, 2008 2:29:32 PM

Good grief, it looks like something purchased from the Good Will!

Posted by: Rosemary | Sep 5, 2008 2:29:53 PM

Talk about going lower in class from ABC. First off, if you've got it flaunt it! Why keep the jewelry in the jewelry box? The differece with Michelle Obama and Cindy McCain is that Cindy isn't afraid of wearing this. Michelle doesn't want anyone to be able to afford such a necklace with her husband's socialistic views. They believe in redistribution. Since they don't want anyone to wear nice jewelry, the jewelry business will be obsolete and cause more people to loose their jobs! Just what the Obama's want!

Posted by: justrighttoo | Sep 5, 2008 2:30:10 PM

this is just ridiculous - more of the liberal left leaning media highlighting those awful, shameless republicans...guess what - i bet pretty much everything she wore was earned - with her own hard work...now i'll just wait for all those comments about how she's an heiress and she was born into the money, blah, blah, blah - get over it!

Posted by: lolomcq | Sep 5, 2008 2:30:14 PM

I love the yellow dress. McCain's dress looks fancy and beautiful on her. Not thing wrong with it, the one that complained may not a tailor or designer anytime in their life. She looks younger than her real age.

Posted by: Lynn Hennessy | Sep 5, 2008 2:31:23 PM

Hum... The McCain's 8 houses, John's $500 shoes and Cindy's $300,000 oufit sure don't represent people who understand Americans struggling to keep their houses from forclosure, a 6.1% unemployement rate and $4.00/gal gasoline. These rich elitist republicans are going to bring "change" from the rich elitist republicans who've held power the last 8 years? Now that's not change you can believe in.

Posted by: AppeaseThis | Sep 5, 2008 2:31:50 PM

I think she looks fabulous and extremely classy, just like a future First Lady should look. By the way, her dress did not cost $313,000, it cost $3,000. They added in all her jewelry and accesories for that higher price. And whose to say they weren't borrowed? People, give her a break! I think there are more important issues than the out there than Cindy McCain's outfit.

Posted by: AB | Sep 5, 2008 2:32:14 PM

p.s. It's good to know that the democrats still believe in class warfare. It must feel good to be jealous of someone else's wealth. Talk about waste of time!

Posted by: justrighttoo | Sep 5, 2008 2:33:09 PM

Cindy probably also had to bite her lip from saying, "Thank God no poor people are in the audience," while standing in her nearly half-million dollar frock.

Out of touch? Yeah. But when there's little brain power to reason outside of your own little world, there's no letting reality in.

Looks like a dress made out of a converted raincoat.

Posted by: Carson | Sep 5, 2008 2:34:38 PM

Does anyone recall that Mrs. Carter dressed as if she ordered her clothes from the Sears catalog? Does anyone also realize that these women have means and they did not necessarily buy their jewelry and accessories just for this event and may have had them for a number of years? And who wouldn't buy a fab dress if they were going to address a gazillion people on what could well be one of the most important weeks of her husband's life? You spend in relation to your economic status. They also give PLENTY to charity.... please also note that Obama gave the money that was donated by Rezko to charity, but only AFTER he found out that he was being investigated/charged by the Feds ...

Posted by: DLH | Sep 5, 2008 2:35:04 PM

I have no problem with a rich person spending as much as he or she wishes and can afford on clothing and jewelry. But Mrs. McCain (and the spouses of other candidates) aren't private persons. Rightly or wrongly, everything they do will be scrutinized and can affect the candidate. For Mrs. McCain to parade such great wealth is simply impolitic when Republicans are trying to label Obama as "elitist."

Posted by: Katia | Sep 5, 2008 2:35:35 PM

If I am a millionare, I may put on fancy necklace, ear rings.. , just like her. Too bad the one couldn't afford them more likely to complain about other women. It is Cindy McCain choice, women stand for beauti. Nothing wrong with beeing rich as long as people earn it with moral way. I am wearing everyday 12K ring, why noone ahve made any comment so far in the last 15 years since I put it on.

Posted by: Lynn Hennessy | Sep 5, 2008 2:36:14 PM

What a misleading title of this article - Did anyone add up the price of Michelle Obama's jewelry plus her shoes plus her outfit and write an article about that - of course not -

maybe the jewelry are gifts from her husband or passed down from her Mother - anyone care to ask those questions.

Posted by: Deborah | Sep 5, 2008 2:36:14 PM

Wow, the left are covering all angles these days. Look, someone has to spend money to keep the economy going and pay for entitlement programs.

Posted by: Oh Please! | Sep 5, 2008 2:36:47 PM

Posted by: Rob | Sep 5, 2008 2:38:33 PM

It's America: you want it? Earn it! Quit waiting on the earners of teh world to give it to you! C'mon Bianna: quit yer complaining and jump in and make something of yourself - you can do it, hon!

Posted by: Big'ones | Sep 5, 2008 2:38:46 PM

Wow. Sure didn't look that expensive. Both Michelle and Cindy look great in their designer clothes. I think Palin needs to get a stylist SOON. It is nice to just blog on a topic that doesn't require any thought! ha.

Posted by: Bea | Sep 5, 2008 2:38:55 PM

I'm a Democrat and I still think this is a ridiculous story. Vanity Fair is just guessing at how much this outfit costs. We already know she's rich and that 95% of the population does not identify with her. Can't we stick to the issues? Like how McCain is pro-military, pro-life, and will extend tax cuts to the rich? Leave his wife out of it.

Posted by: Ivy | Sep 5, 2008 2:40:23 PM

by the way, if the mccains were covorting with terrorists, criminals and racist preachers she wouldn't have even been given the chance to stand up there and support her husband...john mccain would have been forced to give up his nomination! something for all the narrow minded democrats to think about!

Posted by: lolomcq | Sep 5, 2008 2:41:32 PM

this lady is an idiot. Three carat diamonds are not $140,000 each. If you go to any real jeweler you can find the highest quality diamonds for $30-40k each. While I agree Cindy has great taste, a lot of money, there is NO REASON to exaggerate the amount of her outfit other than to make her out as an evil, rich lady. This she's and Obama supporter???

Posted by: Russ Huber | Sep 5, 2008 2:41:54 PM

So much for Pat Nixon's plain Republican cloth coat.

Posted by: Jenny Rome Ga | Sep 5, 2008 2:42:17 PM

If I had the money Cindy has I would flaunt it too. There is nothing wrong with how much she spends and what she spends it on. People need to get a life. The same goes for Michelle, there is nothing wrong with what these ladies wear. I want to know is what can their husbands do for our country.

Posted by: get real | Sep 5, 2008 2:42:17 PM

Mrs. McCain--an heiress--is flaunting her wealth in such a way that really frustrates me.

I'm 30 and I work hard at my job. Mrs. McCain is wearing jewelry that is more valuable--dollar wise--than the last 8 years of my working life...combined.

I hope my fellow blue-collar workers are as annoyed by this as I am.

Posted by: John | Sep 5, 2008 2:42:55 PM

People are seeking a way to pay for their bills and forclosure homes but McCain wife dress was valued at over $300,000. That's nearly $100,000 more than the median price of a U.S. home today. Now who is an elitist? Obama or McCain and his wife. America please decide.

Posted by: Mr. B | Sep 5, 2008 2:43:09 PM

No one has to be reminded that the elitist women of politics can have what they want, designer clothes, and jewels. But in these times of economic hardship for most Americans they do not have to flaunt it so much. So what if they look a little frumpy.... The average American woman is doing good to buy something from an ordinary retailer much less a designer. Leave the 3 carats and designer dresses at home and at least look like you care about average Americans.

Posted by: alice Stephens | Sep 5, 2008 2:43:56 PM

You know, I am a life-long liberal and I plan on voting for Obama, but this report is absolutely absurd and has nothing to do with the issues at hand. She has money and she dresses nice. BFD.

Posted by: Seattle | Sep 5, 2008 2:44:11 PM

Wow - you would think journalists have better things to report on (say hurricanes or the actual messages both parties are trying to deliver)rather than the price of someone's outfit. Is this the worst thing you can dig up on Cindy McCain? And PS - if you are going to compare apples to apples, let's see what Ms. Obama has in her jewelry box. I'm sure her hefty salary from the hospital she was a spokesperson for allowed her some nice trinkets too. Enough with this nonsense!

Posted by: JJ | Sep 5, 2008 2:44:46 PM

I have a problem with hypocrisy. I don't have a problem with McCain wearing expensive clothes, but when the campaign where those people have $500 shoes, 8 hourses and $300.000 outfits then wants to lable anyone else as an elitist I think that they are hypocrites.

Posted by: citizen | Sep 5, 2008 2:45:54 PM

Yeah, ya know, if I wasn't busy paying for gas, food and other such trivialities, I could spend recklessly, too! There's just something I do not like about this woman; and I like her husband even less.

Posted by: DJ | Sep 5, 2008 2:47:29 PM

Russ the lady is not an idiot because of the diamonds exaggerated or not. She is an idiot because she remains Sarah Palin has foreign policy experience because Alaska is close to Russia!! Hope she and McCain don't win cause between his inabilty to read a map and her inexperiencein their zeal to blow up Russia and force them out of Georgia they will Carpet bomb Atlanta.

Posted by: brigitte | Sep 5, 2008 2:50:32 PM

So, Cindy McCain can wear a 313K outfit and they're intouch with everyday Americans and the Obama's are the elitists for going to Harvard. If I may borrow a line from ABC's John Stossel. Give me a break!

Posted by: Joey | Sep 5, 2008 2:51:07 PM

Who cares? One could debate how money would be better spent, i.e. feeding the world's poor, clothing the homeless, providing surgeries for cleft palate children, but this has nothing to do with the election. A case can be made that the Obamas and McCains, and for that matter every other living politician in Washington and his/her spouse, spends way too much on clothing, suits, luxuries. $300,000 for an outfit is extravagant but who's to say she even paid for it? Maybe it was 'on loan', or a gift from the designer. Come on ABC, report real news, not this garbage. What's next, what brand of toothpaste each candidate uses? Whether Barack gets his teeth whitened (which he must; those suckers gleam!)?

Posted by: Dipper Duck | Sep 5, 2008 2:51:14 PM

Boy you people need to stop whinning, especially you so call reporters(hint) B.G. She is rich and wants to look good, she has done alot for many. What would you do if you had money? Why don't you talk about all the rich movie stars that spend their money on useless things. But no she is a Republican so attack her. Just like this so call reporter Brian on the money that goes into the Convention of course it comes out when they are having their convention, but not the Democrat convention. What bias I am glad you are all being expose for what you all are. I am not watching you all anymore.

Posted by: Stopwhinning | Sep 5, 2008 2:51:25 PM

I'm a democrat, but I really like Cindy McCain AND her style! She always looks fabulous. Although conscience would never allow me to vote for McCain, I do like the fact that Cindy and Pitbull do not share all the same values. Pitbull looks, thinks and acts like someone living in the 1950's. Cindy is much more "with it."

Posted by: Maddie | Sep 5, 2008 2:51:28 PM

You do know that ABC is owned by Disney –a Republican slanted company? How the heck can some of you accuse ABC of being “left wing”. I love it when people start accusing media outlets as being "left wing". The latest buzz word for the failures of the American Public Education system.

Go to fox.com, listen to Fox Radio, and I am sure that you can partake in meaningful discussions on trailer park fashion and designers of the Wal-Mart line of attire.

Posted by: Profit Ganda | Sep 5, 2008 2:51:46 PM

I don't give a fig what any of them wear but PLEASE don't make it out like you are so down to earth, can understand what most American's are going through during these tough times, say that you can relate to the "common" folk AND THEN wear a dress that cost over $300K, McCain and his wife keep SHOWING over and over again that they haven't got a clue, it's extremely insulting. There is a huge difference between class and having money, Cindy McCain has money NO CLASS.

Posted by: AttitudeOfGratitude | Sep 5, 2008 2:52:00 PM

OK. So she dresses in extremely expensive clothes. She has the money and it's been earned and inherited from a thriving beer distribution company. I think that's fine, BUT the McCain crew should throw mud at Obama for having money either. It's hypocritical and tacky. From where I'm sitting, the McCain empire is far more elitist than the Obama clan. Now, let's get to the real issues: economy, Iraq, etc.

Posted by: JJ | Sep 5, 2008 2:54:18 PM

I like to see the people who represent our country dress nice. You must remember, they are wealthy and dress likewise and why not. If I had money like them I can assure you that I would have more expensive clothes too. Prosperity is great and I would love to see everyone prosper. We can't compare what these people wear to whether they understand our problems. Some do and some don't. Many of the wealthy people are very "giving" of their wealth to charities and many don't even boast of it. Cindy McCain is very involved in giving and aware of needs of poor people and sick people. If you had a poor candidate, how could they help a country to prosper when they haven't? Our country's representatives should look like they are representing the greatest country in the world.

McCain's yellow dress is a perfect example of letting something wear YOU rather than vice-versa. The color is unflattering, the design is both immature and too "Look-what-a-fashionista-I-am!" Flouncy little full skirts like that are laughable on anyone over 30. As for the jewelry, given the condition of the economy, the decision to wear nearly $300,000 worth of jewelry to a political convention was, shall we say, ill-considered and in poor taste. Like the dress.

Posted by: Lili | Sep 5, 2008 2:55:45 PM

It's not the fact that she is wearing the outfit, it's her money, do what she wants with it; it's her husband's gall at calling someone else elite. Any and all politician's are elite, that's why they are politician's.

Isn't this part of the "American Dream" that Obama says HE will work for all Americans to have?

Then what is the big deal about Cindy and John McCain's houses, clothing, or other material goods.

I think we all are striving to reach a point in life where we can enjoy these "inalienable rights" and so can rich people.

Stop treating the McCain's so harshly and favoring Obama. It is their money and they can do what they please with it! I do not have a problem with them being rich. It just helps me to know what I can aspire to as well.

Posted by: Jason | Sep 5, 2008 3:03:10 PM

OMG! The dress didn't cost $300K, that's what they are "claiming" the entire outfit costs. Funny thing is all of the Hollywood elitist out there supporting Obama will spend that much on a purse. This is just typical left-wing hypocrisy. Wonder exactly how much the Obama’s money they have given to charitable organizations vs. the McCain’s? Who the hell cares how much an outfit costs, really?

Posted by: KiKi | Sep 5, 2008 3:03:14 PM

"ELITIST!!!!!!!!!! People are losing there homes for that much money!" MAYBE people should live within their means and NOT buy a home they can't afford. Crazy idea, I know. People take responsibility for your poor financial decisions!

Posted by: jeff | Sep 5, 2008 3:04:16 PM

Oh my goodness. I think Mrs. McCain looked really good and classy. I also loved the bright green dress she wore the night that Palin spoke. She exudes confidence. I love it. If I had her money I would buy the same things. None of the canidates really understand the "Middle" class. Dont give me crap about Obama being middle class b/c he was not. He was born, his daddy went back to Kenya, his momma moved to India where he attended a muslim school (not a big deal), then when they realized he probably couldnt go to college graduating there they sent him to his grandparents who sent him to a Private school in Haiwii. His mom had a degree and maybe struggled for a little bit, i am sure her parents helped her go to school. Anyway, he is not middle class and knows nothing about my struggles. I thing both potentional first ladies dress fine. Also I agree with the one who stated that 3k earrings do not cost 300k even if they are flawless. Thats absurd. We know nothing of how they were purchased (hand me downs, borrowed, etc..) I dont vote based on the way anyone dresses, i vote based on the issues that i hold dear. By the way, even if McCain wins he wont over turn roe v wade. Bush is against it too and it was never overturned with him in office so whats the difference. It scares me to think what they will accomplish is Obama gets in, they will get their way on everything, scary!!

Posted by: jg5012 | Sep 5, 2008 3:04:53 PM

Obama is the prissy one. He is so obsessed with his shades. The guy has to go to the gym three times a day. Playing golf in Hawaii. Beach resort home in Hawaii. Bodysurfing in Hawaii. McCain can't even lift up his arms.

ABCNEWS.com never mentions how Obama bought land from rezko while he was under federal investigation for influence peddling.

The media has jumped the shark. Look at the two covers of US weekly with Obama and Palin. The same guy has Obama on his rolling stone covers. The media doesn't care about balances. 85 percent of the media are democrats.

Posted by: todd | Sep 5, 2008 3:06:23 PM

I dont think anybody blames them for being rich. Thats not the point. The point is that its tasteless to exhort such affluence in such desperate times, before the masses who are suffering. Its rude behavior. Tone it down, show some class. Keep your money, but you dont have to flaunt it!

John Edwards....$400 haircuts.
Look if people have the money they spend it. Look at all the rap artists do you think their "bling" is cut glass? Get off what anyone wears. Did anyone every think a designer or jeweler lent them out for the convention? Just like the award shows.

To Larkin:

McCain family donated 25,000 to gustav victims.

McCain gives all his money from his five books to charity. Obama keeps all his money and has made tens of millions this year. Obama gave less than one percent to charity.

McCain has two sons in the military.

Mccain wasn't rich growing up his family moved from rental home to rental home while his father was at war and Obama made fun of his father being an admiral thus being an elitist.

McCain has donated his senate salary increases since 1989 to charity while Obama keeps all of his.

Obama really in touch with normal people. Most normal people do land deals with Tony Rezko.

The dress is cancelling all the street-cred checks her lofty bio video wrote! A disgrace!

"Does the American voter really care about how much money first ladies spend on their wardrobes. Looking back through history, and reviewing former and hopeful first ladies, the answer is: not really."

And yet you feel it is newsworthy, give me a break already.

I'll take her earrings. I agree that the first lady should be appealing. If we are talking of looks I would like to suggest to Cindy to get a softer hair color. The bleached blonde look does not suit her. She is just too old. Somthing toned down would be more appealing. She is like a Monet, from far away she is ok but when you get close it she looks a mess.

I'm ashamed - I had $20 extra dollars and purchased gas today .. I should have got $10 and sent the rest to the Katrina "victims"!! SIGH!

WHO CARES???? Why does this rate a news article?? I'm under the impression she can spend her money however she wishes - am I mistaken?? Get a grip!! This is not news!! Print something worth reading, something with substance, not this junk!!!

it's ugly I don't care if it cost $500,000.Even if I had the money to buy this I would find somthing else to buy...not clothes and houses that I can't remember how many I have. You American's are really somethign that explains why your goverment owes everyone and will fight for no just cause.

Geez that is an ugly dress, I though my Ed Hardy t-shirts were tacky and flashy with rhinestones and crystals on them.

Only a small amount of the people losing their homes today are doing so becasue of lost jobs or the economy. They are losing their homes because they are spend crazy and bought way beyound they means (house mortgage should be no more than twice your gross income)and have credit card debt up the ying yan IE spenders rather than savers. I'm sure Cindy can afford these items and did not go into debt to keep up with the Jones. Stupid story.

Hege! You said a mask would help Cindy McCain? I thought she WAS wearing a mask. Step away from the Botox, Cindy, just step away.

To me this dress was a poor choice and symbolized personal ambivalence. The color was chosen to draw attention, but between the bangs hanging down to her eyes and the flipped up collar reminiscent of Dracula had it been black, Cindy looked like she was trying to hide those pearls and her face so no one could see. Why? Shyness? Shame? Fear? Hiding wrinkles? I don't think she portrayed confidence, but showed personal confusion.

Can't wait for McCain to be President, he'll bring the average income up to their standard. Hmmm, should I get the Bentley or the Porsch. Think I'll also get a couple of new houses too, can't deal with living in one house only. I also always wanted my own jet to fly around the world. I'm so glad McCain understands what us folks go through everyday with just one house, not easy. Wait I also need some $500 shoes too.

Take heart marcus. Someday in the future when your neighbor gets a fence you will too, guaranteed!! We will all be better off!
