Closing Arguments: Global Warming or Lousy Weather?
June 11, 2008 12:19 AM
The east coast tonight is being pounded by thunderstorms, the Midwest has been hit by terrible flooding, and only halfway through tornado season it's already the deadliest season in a decade. So, what is going on? Do you think global warming is already making our weather more severe? Or is this just lousy weather?

Just normal climate variations. Definitely NOT global warming.

Lousy weather. There is 0 proof of global warming. No facts, just conjecture or just plain fraud. ABC needs to quit foisting this paranoia on the public. Prove it beyond a doubt first. Do your due diligence and then tell the truthoccasionally.

I think the United States has been destroyed and the New World Order is using HAARP to break our country up and depopulate the west to either sell it off or give it to the Mexicans. HAARP is destroying the communites by either floods or different types of storms and fire. It is up to the American people to wake up and destroy the political leaders who are in with the NWO.

Polls show that most people just aren't buying into the media hyped global warming "crisis." And it's hard to get all frightened when some of the leaders of the movement still travel the globe via private jet.
It's a scam. Just a way to undermine capitalism. Beware.

THESE ARE TIMES THAT HAVE BEEN FORETOLD IN THE BIBLE. THE BOOK OF REVELATIONS. IT SPEAKS OF ALL THESE TYPES OF NATURAL DESASTERS, FLOODS, EARTH QUAKES, DROUTH, SUNAMIES, HURRACANES ECT... AS BEING A SIGN OF THE END OF TIME AND THE COMING OF THE ANTI CHRIST. OFCOUSE IN THE END JESUS COME BACK FOR THE REDEMPTION OF THE RIGHTOUS. YOU ALL NEED TO BE DOING A SHOW ABOUT THAT. IF YOU DESIDE TO PLEASE INFORM ME IN ADVANCE. I DON'T WANT TO MISS IT.

IT'S JUST WEATHER! A FEW YEARS AGO, WHO EVEN KNEWABOUT EL NINO/ LA NINA? DIDN'T YOU CATCH THE ANTI-MAN-MADE-GLOBAL-WARMING PETITION, SIGNED BY 31,386 SCIENTISTS, INCLUDING FREEMAN DYSON, AND 9,000 P.H.D.S?

Weather, no; Climate, yes... its an academic distinction, but an important one.
Weather is local and short-term, so the answer to your question is no. BUT, what does seem to be happening is that our global climate (long-term average of weather) is getting warmer and becoming more erratic, which is a prediction of climate change. Global warming doesn't cause a specific hurricane or thunder storm, but the increased temperatures on land and in the ocean provide the heat (energy) that makes the storms (that we've always had) more intense over the long-term.

Global warming is BOGUS.. All the worst weather events happened YEARS ago, Highest recorded world temperature and US temperature, Blizzard of 49, Hurricane that almost made Long Island 2 Islands.

I live in New England. About two weeks ago, I was in a long line at the bank (about 6th in a line of 10 or so strangers)and somebody mentioned how cold it had been both during the day and at night. I said it's the Global Warming. None of us knew each other; but, we all started laughing and joking. I think that says it all. You can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time; but you just can't fool ALL the people ALL of the time.

global warming is real and you know you can feel it everytime you walk outside. which you no doubt avoid doing at all in summer. the world best scientist, say it's true. this isn't a movie. we can't wait till the last sec to stop this. i pray for our grandchildren.

I think global warming is a factor along with the earths cyclic routine. I think the global warming is accentuating the normal process. Alternative energy is a must if we want to save our planet and not have this dependency on foreign oil which is causing the downfall of our economy. But, that's another subject.

Yes, I definitely do believe that global warming is a significant part of the cause of our extreme weather. As the atmosphere and oceans heat, there is more energy available to exacerbate the strength of storms. It is exactly the effects that teh scientists told us we would see.
Question: We are burning fuels at unprecedented rates. Heat results. Some no doubt escapes. But how can we NOT be heating the environment.
I saw it coming in the 60's, but didn't realize the effects of CO2 and methane.
Most of the world's wiser countries are well along the road of correction. How can we be so dumb as to keep our heads stuck in the sand. Gore was right - this is going to be very inconvenient. I wish it weren't. But I'm quite convinced that it is.
Millions are beginning to starve. I'm trying to do my part, and have been for years - like with a 70 MPG hybrid, drying my clothes on a clothesline, only having had 2 kids, and walking more. It feels good to help. I wish I could do more.

I think its global warming. what else explains the later winters and worse weather during the spring. I remember growing up wishing we didn't have any snow for holloween, and now we are wishing for snow for christmas! how do u explain that?
Posted by: john webersd | Jun 11, 2008 1:26:49 AM
Global warming...it's possible that our planet is indeed getting a bit warmer and perhaps this warmth is what is triggering the unusual weather patterns, BUT, it is rediculous for anybody to think that we as humans are and CAN actually warm the planet up! That's insane...LOL!!!
Posted by: Zaida | Jun 11, 2008 1:30:09 AM
we have to listen to the bible. these things are happining for a reason.
Posted by: john webersd | Jun 11, 2008 1:35:25 AM
Do you think global warming is a myth? Then what happened to the winter weather that was so common when I was a child, with temperatures dropping to 10 or 20 degrees below zero? And watch out for people who issue utterances like, "Environmentalists claim global warming is real, but scientists do not." Few if any real geoscientists deny global warming. Indeed, it was at gatherings of the best scientists in the world, at the Club of Rome and elsewhere the issue was first raised. Moreover, the effects of greenhouse gases are empirically demonstrable, and their increased presence in the atmosphere is also scientifically measured. Finally, what is it about the U.S.A., that people here are so far behind Europe, and even third-world nations in understanding that global warming is real?

I think it gets worse after each space launching.

Americans are some of the most scientifically illiterate people in the developed world. Most are not adequately equipped to grasp and evaluate the science involved in understanding global warming. They don't understand, so they don't believe it. Anyone who understands science can plainly see that global warming IS happening. By disagreeing with global warming, you label yourselves ignorant.
Posted by: Michelle | Jun 11, 2008 1:45:46 AM
There's something wrong and suspicious when scientists are not allowed to debate.
Posted by: donna | Jun 11, 2008 1:46:15 AM
There are a lot of ridiculous arguments here. A lot of people who believe an invisible man in the sky watches over them and the earth is just fine. Please, take responsibility people. There's no god that can help you if you refuse to help yourselves. Where is your pollution condoned by the bible? Fools.
Posted by: tony | Jun 11, 2008 1:49:24 AM
Leo, thats an interesting question you raise about Americans. I think its a mix of religious fundamentalism, corporate media (I'm talking to you ABC), economic extremists, and the ever-present idea that we Americans can conquer or mold nature.
One example: when the corporate media has 'debates' on this topic, they trot out one scientist and one denier in the interest of 'balance'. What they don't tell the audience is that there are some 10,000 or more qualified scientists who would say nearly the same thing as the representative of science, but only 10 or so well-funded, professional deniers with credentials in engineering, medicine or some other topically irrelevant field (if they're lucky). Thus, the public is led to believe that these two views should be given equal weight and that the results of decades of exhaustive research is all half-baked.

Global warming is here and getting worse. Here at the west coast, it gets warmer year after year.
We used to live in Iowa, where it was used to hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Recently it has been like west coast whether all year around (of course except those disasters).

Global warming is in the background of the record setting storms we are alrteady experiencing in the 21st century. The increased heat collecting in the oceans translates to greater ENERGY being exchanged from the Ocean to the atmosphere. This increased ENERGY in the atmosphere is expressed is experienced as record setting storms of every kind that are pounding our country.
It seems inevetible that today's record setting storms..Floodings, tornadoes, and even record late snowfall this week in Washington's Cascades are a hint of things to come. Each a result of the greater energy in our atmosphere causing usual storms to pack greater energy and human impact.

Global Climate Change IS the proper term, and YES man is responsible. Who else could we blame it on? Not the dog, or God. Hint: Blame the guy who created the powder that dissipates clouds instantly. This creates an instantaneous
change in barometric pressure. Blame yourself IF you drive a car. Cars regardless of carbon emissions create vast amounts of heat. The atmosphere traps this heat, asphalt and the sun increase the heat more and more. Blame humanity itself and the desire to be warm. Heating your home is a huge source of heat, and again multiplied by a billion homes equals more changes. Finally blame the politicos that are full of hot air and continue to fail us in crating real and lasting change. Oh and for those who feel the cooling trend, that's due to more moisture in the air due to rapid evaporation of our freshwater supplies due to actual global warming. The cooling is a feeling, NOT a reality!
Posted by: Cory Jackman | Jun 11, 2008 3:24:54 AM
By the way, I'm in Fairbanks Alaska, we study climate change here. It's real, no doubt about it. Fact is winters are much warmer here than even ten years ago. Hasn't been 60 below since 99-00 and we only had three days of fifty below this last winter.
Oil companies are aware of this, and less oil for heating, NOT more consumption is the result. Therefore they needed to raise prices to offset this trend while feeding their greed. Lets end the debate, GROW HEMP ALREADY!
Posted by: Cory Jackman | Jun 11, 2008 3:33:39 AM
Sun spots are cooler regions on the sun's surface held up by magnetic fields, and they can have dramatic effects on space weather, disrupting. I don't believe that we are having any kind of warming. But I do know Al is making big money off of it. But some people believe him. But myself I don't The scientist don't believe it.
Posted by: rose | Jun 11, 2008 3:38:03 AM
We know beyond any reasonable doubt that rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere results in rising air temperature. We also, at this point, are reasonably sure that the entire solar system is heating up due to the expected rising solar activity in this, the start of Solar Cycle 24. Many scientists think we had better look out for the sun over, especially, the next 3-6 years.
So, it looks like we are in for some heating due to both sources. If carbon dioxide turns out to be the minority cause, that in no way obviates the need to put a lot of distance between us and the oil companies at the fastest possible rate.
Our addiction to oil is a very serious problem, and will only get worse. It is responsible for rising costs for gasoline and everything else petroleum. It causes tragic loss of life and puts a severe drain on our treasury due to war. It causes political and social unrest over large sections of the world. It is insane, considering the much cheaper, clean and beneficial alternate energy sources we have at our disposal if the desperate and ruthless supression the oil companies have on these technologies can be broken.
Global Warming is very real but the true ratio of the various causes cannot quite yet be determined. But that's no excuse for inaction. Having war after war for the sake of our clamorous need for oil cannot be excused by the ruse of the terrorist threat. We are going about that in the wrong way too, but that's another subject.

How about you CLOWNS go watch the 'inconvient truth' again.
Then wonder afterwards.........what kind of power do we have to FORCE everyone on the planet from polluting?
What kind of power do we have to save people from starving if we do?
Al Gore didnt seem to have an answer for the fact any polution level is going to make it WORSE .
So getting down to 'pre 1970 levels' inst going to STOP global warming.
So basically, if global warming is REAL, we are screwed because nobody is going to FORCE everyone in the world to change overnight , until its too late and a catastrophe happens.

"It's a scam. Just a way to undermine capitalism."
Global warming is false. The earth is COOLING down. LOOK AT THE FACTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
---------------------------------
I can't believe that people are so stupid and blind to the FACT that humans are absolutely impacting our planet.
HANS: Our oceans ARE warming. The polar ice caps ARE melting. Glaciers are disappearing. Our average temps have risen. Weather IS being affected by these changes. Those are the FACTS you suggest we look at.
Undermine capitalism? What?????? Sure, global warming is a communist conspiracy. That's so rediculous it does need a response.
The "WHY SHOULD I DO ANYTHING, IT MIGHT INCONVEINIENCE ME" attitude is not only completely selfish, but it's completely irresponsible.
Sorry that we might actually have to take responsibility for the way we live. God forbid you do something for the benefit of someone other than yourself - like the entire planet for example.
The VAST MAJORITY of scientists now acknowledge global warming IS REAL and is impacting our planet. They acknowledge our lifestyles are contributing to the problem.
Those who think they know better will also acknowledge global warming eventually. Unfortunately, chances are, it will be too late.

People that think global warming is not a problem are just uninformed. These are probably the same people that have buying the big suv's the last 20 years. I really don't know how much more evidence people need. Maybe these people need to go see "Inconvenient Truth", I mean especially since there was a Nobel Prize given for it. I have noticed that people without kids tend to care less because they know that it won't affect them as much in their lifetime.

I am 60 years old and there is no doubt in my mind the WORLDS weather / climate has dramatically changed to what it was say 20 years ago, i don't agree that it is 'just the weather', it has changed with much more severe manifestations of tornados, floods, droughts, blizzards etc. In the city where I live our rainfall has decreased by 25% in the last 20 years. Once prime farming land is now marginal, whereas other places are getting flooded out, we can't deny the changing climate, the evidence is all around us, the only thing I am personally not totally convinced about is why it is happening, that is not say I don't believe in global warming - I do, I am just not convinced that it is entirely due to human intervention.

Oh I can not believe all the people who cling to the belief that there is no Global warning. The White house has finally come out and admit there is and they changed the reports to make it look like it isn't. Everyone I know believes it, not like all of you with your heads in the sand. I live in Chicago and I can tell you the winters are defintly warmer. I can remenber winters when the windchill was 56 below zero for one to two weeks, we do not have the same cold spills like 20 or 30 years ago. We have a small cold spill and that is it.
Posted by: Bridget | Jun 11, 2008 10:32:43 AM
Nobody has offered the main reason for global problems: Overpopulation. This causes overuse of all natural materials on the planet. Only China has tried to limit population growth and seen much opposition. Aren't you disturbed at all by the constant photos of starving kids in Africa and in Iraq? As this bout of bad weather again limits production of food crops, how are all these people supposed to be fed? In the past, the only benefit of all the wars has actually been the decrease in population that has been the result.

If you don't think global warming is real then you are smoking crack. There is lots of proof of it. Common sense if you ask me if you dump billons of tons of co2 into the atmosphere a year then tere will be some reaction. Here is how I look at it...The earth is a fish bowl, if you take sodium hydroxide and dumb it into a fish bowl you will kill all the fish. if you take alot of co2 and dump it into the atmospher you will eventually kill all the people.

It's just weather. How do all you global warming guru's explain the fact of 100 year flood levels? I live in the middle of all this Midwest flooding and they talk about reaching or breaching 100 year flood levels of 1913 and 1917. Do the math, it is a cycle 1913 to 2008, 95 years, pretty close to 100 year flooding levels. Global warming is a theory developed by scientists and environmentalists to generate grant money and funding for their experiments. If they prove that global warming is bunk they lose their money. They have no motivation to prove the truth that global warming doesn't exist because then all the government money stops funding their research.

Nancy: your post is a perfect example of the ill-informed American trying to have an opinion.
Funding is not granted to garbage science. Researchers have to show that their research is worth funding by presenting years worth of sound, exhaustive preliminary data. If global warming research were just "made up," the research would not be funded. There is no conspiracy here. Scientists are not interested in receiving money for work that isn't valuable. Scientists pour their heart and soul into their work, and they want to do something useful.

The earth's atmosphere acts as a giant heat engine, distributing heat from the equator to the poles. The simplest model of this is the so called three cell model which explains the trade winds in the tropics, the artic winds, and a much more unpredictable zone in the middle latitudes.
As the amount of energy staying in the atmosphere increases due to CO2 build-up, the more energetic this redistrubution process has to become. This redistribution causes greater extremes both of cold air penetration from the poles and warm air moving from the tropics. For those in the middle latitudes, more extreme storms should be expected.
So a more correct understanding of Global Climate Change is not a uniform warming, but a more excited and violent atmosphere.

Well it snowed yesterday here - definately not normal. Doesn't mean that overall the trend isn't global warming but to tell you the truth I'd like some temporary global warming right now. I'm sick of cold, rainy and winter weather in JUNE!!!
Posted by: annon | Jun 11, 2008 9:24:06 PM
In my opinion, it is definately global warming. In the last 15 years, summers are getting hotter and winters warmer. Rain is less dependable, it either floods or lack of rain causes draught. Im not a fanatic either way but I can see what is right in front of me. People get so heated when they argue this point. Why bother? It takes too much energy...Do what you believe in. Live where you want and prepare as your conscience dictates.

Are you people insane! Of course its global warming. When can we say that yea we had 20 tornadoes today, in one area! Or, yea we always have seen houses in the midwest get swept away by flood waters! Not to mention in the far east Tsunami's ripping through China washing away entire villages! Come on people wake up and see the times. We are so naive about certain situations it seems on purpose. Just until it actually hits home and we have to suffer.i.e. Mr. Bush second term!

We need to start thinking about our world not mars not the moon not venus or any other planet. We need to walk out our doors and start walking towards the white house... they don't see just whats going on here.

Global Warming IS a reality. I am a child of the 1970's and Environmentalists which was new at the time, warned of this but people (citizens AND politicians) ignored the reality. It was not "cool" to be green
at that time. Gas shortage was serious and many measures for conservation was done at schools and in some public and governmental areas. But after negotiations with foreign oil controlled countries oil became plentiful again and EVERYONE put saving the environment behind them...now we are reliving our past and DeJaVUE!!! Global warming IS a reality. IT IS part of a cycle as you can see when one studies the changing climates of the past. But now over population and misuse of our resources have caught up with all of us globally. WE MUST look at other avenues NOW...not later. NOW in order to save endangered animals (Polar Bear) and other species that will not be around for our future generations. The US especially has to find other sources to generate better ways of energy (e.g. wind, nuclear and solar). WAKE UP EVERYONE!!!! Even if we drill for more oil, we must continue on our quest for better energy resources and continue onward with "conservation".
