Realty Check: Guess Who’s Knocking on Ed McMahon’s Door?
June 06, 2008 4:01 PM
Vicki Mabrey Reports:
Countrywide, his home lender, that's who.
Did anyone see Ed McMahon and his wife on TV last night? Because Ed and his wife Pam are behind on their mortgage. Does anyone else find it jaw-droppingly amazing that Ed McMahon is facing foreclosure?
Ed McMahon, for crying out loud – Johnny Carson sidekick, the Ryan Seacrest (before there was a Ryan Seacrest) of Star Search, pitchman for all kinds of stuff, including that million-dollar Publisher’s Clearinghouse check. Yes, that Ed McMahon is $644,000 in arrears on his $4.8 million dollar mortgage.
Okay, forget that he's made millions (I know, I heard him on TV last night blaming it on a couple of bad divorces, and saying, "If you spend more money than you make..."). Think for a minute about the fact that this is an 85-year-old man saying he needs to heal from a broken neck so he can work again to afford to pay his mortgage!
What??!?!
See, in my view, at 85, even if you love work so much you never want to retire, you should not have to work because you’re still cracking a big nut like a mortgage. I'd like to have my house paid off so I would essentially be living free. Maybe not free of property taxes and insurance, but certainly we should be mortgage free in our 80's. And 70's. And hopefully in our 60's.
Let's look at the numbers: The McMahons bought the house in 1990 for $2.6 million. There was a mold problem and they won a $7.2 million court judgment for that. "They had nine lawyers, we had nine lawyers," he said to explain where the settlement funds went. They've had the house on the market for two years for upwards of $6 million – 50+ lookers, 0 takers.
Does anyone else but me think there are lessons to be learned here? You buy a house in 1990 for $2.6 million, 18 years later you should not owe more than you paid for it. Especially when you are 85 years old.
Coming Monday: How I learned the lesson of the debt-free house...

I wonder if the federal government will bail him out too.

Sorry. He made Millions why did he not pay off his home. Math 1-0-1.
Million = Pay off home first.

The greedly old fool earned enough money that he could have paid cash for a very nice house, but he still insisted on buying more than he could afford. I don't feel sorry for him. As he himself said, he spent more than he earned.

Not one of us know the true circumstances of this, so don't bash a celebrity again. Bashing needs to stop.
Maybe when if we find out the true reason for this , we'll not be so judgemental. Get a grip and for goodness sake, get a life. At least he want to go back to work - better than the 40% of this country that would rather be on welfare.

My tears are destroying my keyboard. Have to keep this short!

Ed deserves better than this. He was loyal to Johnny Carson to the end. Good grief, the poor guy broke his neck. There are a lot of expenses promoting a celebrity brand and if the income stops rolling the costs do not. He does need to sell the house and hang it up. I tell you what, if Obama sends some money Ed McMahon's way instead of to the likes of Jeremiah Wright, I might consider voting for him.

I don't know how he feels... yet! I have a feeling I'll be learning the hard way. My company was bought and I now earn 20-25% less. I'm 61. I borrowed to improve my home and put a kid thru college. I was working well...
My entire paycheck goes to the mortgage, raised insurance, and raised taxes. There used to be money left over to pay bills and eat. There was some extra money left in an account as a reserve, but that's going fast. Stay tuned.

Sounds like even rich people live beyond their means.
I paid off my mortgage entirely by the time I was 41, and I did it with no outside help (no husband at the time), and even though I had a year of unemployment while in graduate school. It is possible if you just do some basic things: don't spend more than you have, don't accumulate debt, be frugal. But I fear many Americans think debt from consumer crap is just a normal way of life, as well as uber-expensive cars, McMansions, extravagant parties for kids, etc.

Massive excess, stupidity, and/or trusting the wrong people is the only explanation I can come up with. They should be "economy-proof" and should have paid of their mortgate a LONG time ago!

Maybe he can move in with one of his ex-wives, since they got all the money? Or, maybe PCH can give him some of the sweepstakes money they claim to give out... they haven't had an actual drawing since 1932!!!
As for 'Lou' and WestCoastMessenger' ... get a life! This blog isn't about welfare or Rev. Wright, so stop trying to slant everything toward your negative xenophobic view!

You live beyond your means, it gets ahead of you and leaves you behind!!!
He should of known better!!
Ditto Lance's comment to Lou and WestCoast Messenger!!! Maybe the two of you should help out Ed.

Why is it that so many people think the phrase "should of" is correct? The contraction "should've" is short for "should HAVE", not "should of". Take thirty seconds and think about what you're trying to say, people. If nothing else works, try imaginging whether your fourth grade teacher would find what you're writing to be acceptable.
As for Mr. McMahon and his mortgage problem; he knows how he got into this mess. Instead of trying to sell his house at a substantial profit, he should try putting a price on it that will allow him to sell it.
