Night Three Report Card: Grading Bill and Biden
August 27, 2008 11:45 PM
Tonight you heard President Bill Clinton say Senator Obama is "ready" to be commander-in-chief. You also heard Obama's Vice Presidential nominee, Senator Joe Biden deliver a fiery rebuke of John McCain and the Bush administration. So what did you think about the speeches tonight? Give us your grades below.

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Night Three Report Card: Grading Bill and Biden:
I thought future VP Joe Biden and former Pres. Clinton did an excellent job in their speeches. On the other hand, your reporting of the convention tonight would have been significantly enhanced if you had NOT announced, as you opened Nightline, that Barack Obama was parented by a black man and a white MAN!!!! Please slow down a little, get some sleep, and stop intoning, "It's a sign of the times" -- surely one of the most meaningless phrases uttered on TV since the technology's inception -- and it's had some competition.

What was that your reporter said. he's the son of a Black man from Kena and a white man from Kansas? WOW that is history!

George Stephanopoulus was obviously wearing his Democrat Party hat tonight when he graded the performances at the Democrat Party convention on night 3. The entire show, in my humble opinion, should be graded about a 3.5 overall. All one has to do is look at the actual performance of Bill Clinton to know that almost everything he said was a lie. The only thing that saved his presidency from total disgrace was the election of the Republican majorities in the house and senate. Joe Biden's speech had a lot more credibility and, even then, Joe is a typical lying politician and his speech was filled with BS and disloyalty toward his old friend John McCain. Democrats will throw over their own grandmothers to win an office. It is always the same with them.

When PRESIDENT OBAMA brings our troops home finally, I hope we these United States can enjoy a day of cellebration. All offices and business closed. Parades and parties like we have NEVER before seen. All supporters of our brave soldiers meeting them along the way bringing them all home to us once again. I pray this man can attain this position and make this happen. We as a nation need this NOW.

I disagree! You are being very biased and there are holes all over the place. You need to get your heads out of the Democrats rear-ends and actually listen to what is being said and not what you want to here. There is no way Obama/Biden will win the election. You need to check yourself at the door. You said the same things about Kerry/Edwards and you were left w/ egg on your face. I thought as a journalist, you are supposed to be unbiased. You will be loosing me as a viewer. Why don't you check with other networks, such as FOX, who stay in the middle of the road.

I thought both Hillary and Bill Clinton were absolutely great in making their speeches at the Democratic Convention. But the other night on Nightline a comment was made about Michelle Obama's speech as being great. I guess you did it to be kind because I thought she was acting, poorly at that, and every other phrase was,"well, you see." She has a lot to learn and has no finesse. I hope that that if she becomes the First Lady she will be better groomed.
Posted by: Gida | Aug 28, 2008 12:06:45 AM
All you have to do to determine what kind of president Clinton was is look at the shape of the country during his time with a republican congress and the shape with Bush AND a republican congress. No contest. And I remind you that the republican congress during Clinton's years had nothing on their mind but to find something, anything to discredit Clinton and not let him surpass Reagan's accomplishments. But, guess what, he did anyway.

Matthew Dowd said John F. Kennedy was
the first Catholic to be the presidential nominee from a major
party. That is incorrect. In 1928, Governor Alfred E. Smith of New York was the first Catholic to be nominated for president by a major party. JFK
was the first Catholic to be elected
president.

Wow!That was the most biased report card I have ever seen. When Obama hit the stage, about a hundred people were clapping & cheering. The rest of the convention had to be told who he was.Check your tape. Joe Biden was promting the responses of the audience like a second grade teacher with his rants.

Excellent...Outstanding...and...flawless moment of history...I applaud to the OBAMA's campaign for a job well done. To our former Bill Clinton...I truly believe he is a man of integrity who has the heart for the African American communities. For Joe Biden, now I respect the choice Senator Obama made. He is one of us...he understands the hardship of what single parent and family experiences. Both men gave an extraordinary speech and to top it off with love was Senator Barack who made a surprising appearance. I am so proud of this moment, thankful for God's grace upon us...This election year will be a new beginning of a lifetime that none of us will ever forget. As God would say, well done my faithful servants.

I shudder to think where we would be or if we would be, had Mr. Clinton still been comander and chief at the time of nine-eleven. Our soldiers believe in what they are doing in Iraq - why can't we be supportive of their efforts instead of undoing what they have accomplished and many of them have died for. Do we not realize that our current President has had to operate the last years with this Democratic controlled Senate who, thus far, haven't done anything they said they would do under the direction of Pilosy.
I find it interesting that God is asked by these politians to bless America - yetthey don't want to follow His leadership.
Senator Bidden, of course is just blasting other politians, complaining but offering no real solutions.

If black people believes that Bill had their interest in his heart, their loyalty must be skin deep. They had the right to vote against Hillary, but they had no right to call label him a racist.

Since when is Obama Bin Biden a sign of americanism? unlike baseball, apple pie & Chevrolet. Truth is ... you dumbocrats believe Hussein will send lots of money your way and fix the economy if elected. Ridiculous! Dumbocrats also fail to understand the middle east needs to be somewhat stable or we will be paying $10/gallon gas.
McDaddyCain IS NOT AFRAID to use our military to keep us safe from terrorism.

HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....Um is this the same FOX stationed owned by one of the biggest Republican contributors. What a joke. McCain called Obama an elitist. How can a half black half white man from a single white mother who went to public school be an elitist. Need we remind where McCain comes from? Third generation Navy man that never measured up to his Admiral patriarchy? This is not post WWII America, maybe if it was McCain might fit, but not in 2008. If you want more of the same; vote McCain.

bill clinton's speech in support of obama was masterful.
the political pundits can attempt to find fault, as some-those nasty folks at fox-did with hillary's ringing endorsement. but anyone watching what i've been watching on pbs really needs to marvel at how supportative the clintons have been.
many thought obama shouldn't let the clintons have so much face time. but they were wrong. obama was right to trust his instinct. it says alot about obama's way of turning a potential negative into a huge positive. it demonstrates to me another example of obama's leadership experience.
i think both hillary and bill are going to offer formidable assistance to obama's effort to win.

Thought the speeches were very powerful and fervently hope the new unity will succeed to bring us the changes we so desperately need. Barak and Joe and the rest of us could do with a good slogan. How about that old song from the 1930's -- Ain't We Got Fun? Part of the lyrics note that "the rich get richer and the poor get poorer..." what a great and simple way to describe 8 years of cowboy George, which would only get worse under carbon copy Big John. Take the lyrics and add "Let's take the country back!"

i always figure that if somebody (biden) has to work too hard to convince me that they are like me, they probably aren't.
bill on the other hand was well, bill, his speech was great and combined with hillary they may have saved the convention-and perhaps even obama from self destructing. they set the tone, the theme, and they rock.

Did you ever serve any time in the armed forces? What rock are you living under? Please explain to me what "military" do we have to take on another project in the middle east. We are stretched thin. I'm a disabled veteran and I scoff at the civilians that think its just soo easy to pick up and move the military at a drop of the hat. Think before you speak. I did my time and frankly we need to worry about other things. Where do soldiers, marines and airmen come from? mostly people that cant afford college or need to pay back student loans and belong to low and middle class families. Sounds like a pretty good racket the Republicans have going. Screw the infrastructer within the US to send the poor people to fight your cause. Enough is Enough. More of the same; Vote McCain.

the biden 'around the family kitchen table' is a line that was used in the primaries by hillary.
biden needs to stop sobbing too, when hillary chocked up in N.H the media and obama supporters were all over it.

Fox news is fair? That's is the biggest lie of all time, well, maybe not quite as big as Bush/Cheney 's lies about Iraq. Both Clintons were superb and Joe Biden was right on, proud of the dems. Nice call George!

Hilary and Bill Clinton did SUPERB jobs generating excitement for Barrack Obama to project him to the Presidency. We have a chance to CORRECT some of the failed policies of the Bush Republican Administration. We need to get back to helping “the little guy”, instead of all the big profitable businesses. Four years ago, some people didn’t see the difference between the two parties, but after Catrina, the people in Louisiana now understand those differences. We CAN NOT allow another republican, like McCain, drive our country further into the ditch. The middle-class is almost a memory and is getting worse. Many people are struggling, feeling poor, and unsafe. When President Clinton left office, we had a 300 Million-dollar surplus, now we have a Trillion-dollar deficit, which is steadily getting worse. People have to start paying attention to the fact we are borrowing money from countries like China to keep our country/economy afloat. If these loans were called in, there could possibly be another American Depression. People need to WAKE UP!

My favorite part of your coverage... Obama, the son of a black man from Kenya and a white man from Kansas. Damn right, that is historic.
Your coverage however is stilted, biased, and a spin fest for the Democrats.
I'll be very anxious to see how your coverage of the Republicans measures up to this.

at least obama got one thing right, he won't have to worry about a v.p that is smarter than him, or that can upstage him.

You've got to come from "a devil island," not to be touched by Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden's introduction of his father, Senator Joe Biden, the next Vice President of the United States Of America. Former President Bill Clinton's speech was exceptional and exciting. Great work. Lastly, Senator Barack Obama's electrifying entrance into the arena was very touching. Please, one more point. MA BIDEN was georgeous and her presence was gracious and, moving. The night had AAA rating.

Great job all the way around. You'll have to come from "a devil land" in order not to be touched by the affairs of night 3. Attorney General Beau Biden(Capt.)was very articulate. Ma Biden's presence was gracious. Obama's unexpected appearance was moving. The night had AAA rating. Once again, great work.

AND WHO HAS THEIR HEAD IN THEIR REAR END?
Posted by: You're kidding right? | Aug 28, 2008 6:20:50 AM
Hillary and Bill were fantastic- Even John Kerry had a solid speech. Biden was a "C" at best. Yes, he's a totally different type of personality but it seemed to ramble and not be as effective as it could have been.
Obama is the nominee- the success of this is up to him- he made his decision not to pick Hillary as VP ( a mistake) so he needs to stop riding on the Clinton coat tails. Biden can't do it for him either. It's up to Obama- most of us here in PA are still very wary of him- he needs to lay out specific details of what his agenda as President would be and a plan to get there- enough FLUFF SPEECHES!!! He also needs to explain his own words " are bitter and cling to guns and religion." We are waiting, especially those of us in PA- Philadelphia, not rural PA!
Neither of these candidates are good choices- which is why the race has tightened up so much. All each candidate has is their extreme base support. Most in the country are moderates- but neither of these two candidates are anywhere near moderates.

All the pomp and fireworks and speeches are what conventions are about, but the substance of the candidates is far from everyone's lips. They promise change and promise this and promise that. I want facts. Exactly how are the dems going to turn the economy around and help Americans WITHOUT RAISING TAXES???
Where are they going to get the money to do all this good they keep spouting?

including Hillary connected to people as well as Clinton and Biden ...
their delivery was hand crafted for joe blow at home.

I felt Kerry, Bill and Joe did an excellent job. They didn't dirty the convention by bring up McCain every 5 seconds like the media wished they would have. I enjoyed hearing what their plans are going forward and I enjoyed not having to listen to crap every 5 second, I am sick of the crap...
Lets hear the issues and what plans will be taken to insure our move forward and backwards the next 4 years.
Posted by: beck | Aug 28, 2008 9:08:33 AM
you gotta love the people trying to tear down these two guys who obviously were talking facts last night...and they want to blow it off as some kind of show ...or Biden giving a bad speech...
that's a joke...
people were listening and Biden get's it.
obvious to most American's that aren't hard pressed stuck in their anger and not wanting to vote for Obama for "whatever" reasons that may be.
It usre isn't based on policy or judgement
Mccain has been wrong on everything outside the idea that the surge would bring down violence
the goal of the surge was political reconciliation ...the reduciton in violence was the tool.
EVERY other decision on foreign policy McCain has gotten WRONG. and that is too many to list in one comment.
what a joke...just like 4 and 8 years ago the republican fooling the fearful putting on a show with their silver spoon candidate ...
and what do we get...the last 8 years
Posted by: dl | Aug 28, 2008 9:10:25 AM
People, please take a good hard look at the candidates. You can't believe anything that the Clintons or Biden say, or you would believe what they were saying just a few months ago, which is that Obama is UNQUALIFIED. If you vote for a president because he offers hope, because he's black, because he's a democrat, those are all wrong reasons. C'mon people, stop listening and trusting others to educate you on your precious vote. Check the candidates out for yourselves. Most of America has grown so lazy, and way too trusting of our liberal biased media.
A FORMER Democrat

All in all, it has been an extra ordinary Convention.
Well done Hillary, well done Bill and the rest of the speakers.
We have felt your sparks!

I love Bill and Hillary ... but I will not vote for Obama. Biden's speech was all too predictable ... and what was that all about bringing up his tragedy from 35 years ago? ... seemed like a weak attempt to get sympathy. Enough of this "American Idol" show already!
McCain '08

I hate to parrot so many thinking people, but here goes. ABC is just behind MSNBC when it comes to their bs meter being out of whack. Do you people over there just not care how you look to the television audience? I have never seen so many so-called news organizations in the tank for the Democratic Party. Barack Obama is NOT God, nor the Messiah we've been looking for regardless of how hard you try to tell us he is. He has yet to answer one question put to him by anyone wanting to see just who he is. The man is nothing but smoke and mirrors and if you believed one word spoken by Bill or Hillary, then I've got a gold mine I'd like to sell you. When Michelle speaks of you giving up a piece of your pie so that someone else can have it, I say let her and Barack give them their pie. I earned mine and if I wanted you to have it, I'd just hand it over. I'll be damned if anyone in the government is going to make me do it. I challenge one of you Democrats or 'newsmen' to tell me exactly what change Barack is talking about. He's never said. All we hear is change and hope. I hope he changes and starts telling us exactly what he means to do.

Both former President Clinton and Hillary gave exceptional speeches. Yes, they both would have preferred that Hillary was the candidate - but they're both grown up enough to deal with the reality that she's not. And what's most important to them is that we DON'T have four more years of Republican regime. And, excuse me, the claim that FOX News is fair and balanced is the funniest thing I've EVER heard!!! Just stick and "Un" in front of each word, and you've naild it. FOX = UNfair and UNbalanced. Just WATCH it! Now.... Dems UNITE and go forward, and remember, you're fighting Carl Rove Armies - attack, attack attack! Don't back down!

I love how they line up Donna Brazile and George Stephanopolous and ask them to objectively grade and comment on speeches to rabid fans at the DNC. Is anyone surprised by straight A's from the lineup Nightline has assembled?
I wonder if Nightline will line up an equally "objective" group of commentators to fawn over the speeches at the RNC..

I think Barack did a wonderful job in his speech. And laying it out as to where the republicans went wrong and still are doing it all wrong. He was straight shooting in his speech as how he was going to fix what the republicans has messed up these past 8 years. As for giving him a grade on the subjects that he touched on and what he intended to do to go about fixing this mess I would have to give him an A. As for his pick as a running mate he did a good job there too because it takes away from the other party about not having the experience on foreign matters. Biden was a perfect fit as far as that is concerned. He will make a good president and he is what the United States needs to get us back on track and get the middle and poor class back on their feet again after having everything taken out from under them by this past admin.
