Nightline Report Card: Who Won the Debate?

September 26, 2008 11:47 PM

With just 39 days until November's historic election, the first presidential debate, at 97-minutes long, is finally in the books.  But tonight almost didn't happen.  Originally tonight's discussion was supposed to focus on foreign policy, but given this week's economic headlines, moderator Jim Lehrer spent a good portion on the financial crisis.

From Wall Street to Waziristan, both candidates traded jabs and tried to appeal to voters.  So what did you think?  Our Chief Washington Correspondent George Stephanopoulos graded tonight's debate:

On Strategy:

Obama: A-
McCain: B+

Style:

Obama: A-
McCain: B+

Accuracy:

Obama: B-
McCain: B

So who won?  Give us your scores below.

Great debate. Best debate I've seen in my 46 year lifetime.

Sen. John McCain won the debate. The media is doing an A+++ propagandizing the American people. Shame on you!!!

Posted by: Mike | Sep 27, 2008 12:02:06 AM

I think Senator McCain won the debate - I think ABC is prejudiced. They have been for "Obama" all along. They are trying to brain-wash the public into thinking "Obama" was the winner.

McCain won dude. Stop your lies.

Posted by: Jay | Sep 27, 2008 12:02:25 AM

I am voting for McCain. I trust his longer-term experience, his judgment and foreign policy knowledge.
In addition, I trust him to want the office to help the country.

I don't feel that with Obama and I don't trust him at all.

Posted by: nuzjunkee | Sep 27, 2008 12:02:26 AM

Obama is lost in foreign policy. Taking on the presidency today without real foreign policy experience is a dangerous bet for America

Posted by: Greg | Sep 27, 2008 12:02:30 AM

Barack Obama won the dabate.

Posted by: Ron | Sep 27, 2008 12:02:37 AM

Posted by: Maria Tobias | Sep 27, 2008 12:02:44 AM

Obama won 3-1. The Economy is really a headache for McCain...he's not ready for it.

Posted by: Edward | Sep 27, 2008 12:03:00 AM

McCain was in control of his mind--Obama stuttered to think of answers. How would he be stuttering w/other leaders? Neither discussed the Mexican issue of how much money we GIVE to those who haven't EARNED it! That money should go to our senior citizens (who worked for it) which would help immensely with our health-care issues!!!

Posted by: Sheryl | Sep 27, 2008 12:03:10 AM

All of mcCain's bluster and demeaning Obama can't cover up the fact that his first reaction, when seeing an opportunity to miss the debate, was to cut and run. Where? Off to washington where all the mavericks go!

obama!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Donald | Sep 27, 2008 12:03:48 AM

I think, without question, Senator Obama won the debate & the polls tonight are proving that out.

Posted by: Dee | Sep 27, 2008 12:03:52 AM

Obama by far. Looked more presidential, measured responses, well thought out positions, nailed McCain on his policies that promise continue the Bush legacy, such as it is. McCain used the same tired rhetorical talking points. Obama talked policy and most importantly, his concern for the middle class, health care, education and the issues that matter to most Americans.

Posted by: Aaron | Sep 27, 2008 12:04:05 AM

McCain took Flipper to school.

Posted by: Eric | Sep 27, 2008 12:04:20 AM

McCain Won no question!

Posted by: Jeff Smith | Sep 27, 2008 12:05:15 AM

I guess now we know by Obama's final words in the debate that he is not proud of his country either - - just like his wife.

Posted by: Andrea | Sep 27, 2008 12:05:16 AM

It was a great opening debate. However, it was clear that Obama was more confident,he appeared more presidential, he wasn't afraid to attack the issues, and face off directly with McCain. McCain on the other hand wouldn't even as much look at or direct his attention to his opponent.

Long story short, I believe Obama was the clear winner this time!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Ms. Jones | Sep 27, 2008 12:05:25 AM

According to Obama all night long said McCain WAS RIGHT!!! So claerly McCain won.

Posted by: sister s | Sep 27, 2008 12:05:39 AM

McCain no doubt about it Obama still side steps any direct questions. McCain showed that he has the leadership skills needed to run this country and is not bought and paid for like obama. george steph...is so way out of touch and so pro dem he is as sick as some of the pro rep announcers we need real change McCain showed what a true leader is

Posted by: zane | Sep 27, 2008 12:05:46 AM

OBAMA WON HANDS DOWN!!!!!!!

Posted by: Ora | Sep 27, 2008 12:06:01 AM

I think John McCain won the debates in that he was able to back up his statements with facts and experience. Mr. Obama often just shook his head and tried to establish a rapport with the moderator with a sneer or smirk. He only looked at Senator McCain at the end of the debate. I think that Senator McCain strongly established that Obama lacks experience and skill in national and international matters. Obama's voting record and lack of dealing with senatorial matters was evident. As a resident of IL, if we want to see where Obama would take this country, we need only to look at the pitiful economic and political conditions of his home state of Illinois.

Posted by: Colleen Pederson | Sep 27, 2008 12:06:24 AM

Obama won the debate. McCain claims he wants change, yet, he continuously sited his past experience (with the Bush administration). John, you can't have it both ways.

Posted by: sandra burns | Sep 27, 2008 12:06:32 AM

I thought McCain won the debate. He had all the right answers and could remember his opponents name!! UHHH, Tom. UHHH,Jim. I mean John!

Posted by: Gina Celii | Sep 27, 2008 12:06:42 AM

Obama was able to look at John McCain and talk to him as one human being to another. McCain could not even look at Obama which shows such insecurity as a person. How can he negotiate with other world leaders if he can't even look someone in the eye when he talks to them.

Obama was the clear winner.

Posted by: Judy Everett | Sep 27, 2008 12:06:44 AM

I say John McCain....he was more REAL and at least was not calling for more taxes on the already overburdened taxpayers of the great country. Also, I would certainly rather have him looking after our Foreign Policy program...Obama would be the last thing this country needs in that respect!!

Posted by: Jeannie | Sep 27, 2008 12:06:46 AM

Posted by: kim | Sep 27, 2008 12:06:56 AM

I think Obama won the debate. He satyed on target, and was very clear on his intentions to turn this sad situation around. We have never been in so much trouble, we do not need to re-live the DEPRESSION.

Posted by: Patricia | Sep 27, 2008 12:06:56 AM

McCain - He was NOT stammering and saying UM all the time! McCain talked straight to the point and it was CLEAR! McCain also did not MAKE Faces! McCain 100%

Posted by: Terry in NC | Sep 27, 2008 12:07:04 AM

I think it was a draw.

Posted by: Jazz | Sep 27, 2008 12:07:15 AM

John McCain told us what he would or would not do and why. Obama just kept pointing to McCain. McCain wins!

Posted by: Pat Carlson | Sep 27, 2008 12:07:16 AM

McCain won hands down. While Sen. McCain was fighting for America in the Senate, Barry was learning how to hate America with Bill Ayers, an unrepentant terrorist that bombed the Pentagon right here in the USA, working hand in hand with him on the CAC project in Chicago for 3 years. When the media wakes up to this, it will be too late

Posted by: Citizen in NY | Sep 27, 2008 12:07:24 AM

the media are not rushing to say obama won....which means he lost.

Posted by: angry black democrat | Sep 27, 2008 12:07:32 AM

Obama clearly won the debate. Experience is what has gotten us into the mess we are currently in now. We need change.

Posted by: Ree | Sep 27, 2008 12:07:35 AM

You said Obama was less accurate than McCain but he supposedly won the debate? Isn't truth important? Is there a donkey in your lobby ABC?

Posted by: Sally | Sep 27, 2008 12:07:35 AM

obmama is winner of this debate both of them has done well. It is time for new way of leading this country because we are in trouble in more ways than 1.

Posted by: bkleelee | Sep 27, 2008 12:07:41 AM

I am in agreement with George on his assessment, only a give Obama even more of an edge on style. I thought Obama's debating skills FAR exceeded those of McCain. Obama continually attempted to engage McCain in direct conversation and McCain did not even give him a look. McCain, in my opinion, looked shakey at times. If Obama felt shaky, he did not show it. I was interested to see how Obama would do with foreign policy and I thought he did a great job. Nobody questions McCain's experience, but that should have been his baby - he should have blown Obama out of the water - and he did not. On the contrary, I thought McCain did better than expected on discussing the domestic issues. Obama did not do as well as I expected, but I still thought he had the edge over McCain. Style points by far go to Obama. McCain needs SERIOUS work on that side of his debating. He needs to do a better job of engaging his opponent and addressing the camera when he needs to. It is a minor issue, but one that I nonetheless noticed. Finally, I thought that Obama made a few slips in his factual information, but then again, so did McCain. Overall, though, McCain's facts were accurate more than Obama's were. Misquotes and purposeful misinterpretations are part of the political game, though.

Posted by: Patrick | Sep 27, 2008 12:07:46 AM

McCain, hands down. Obama's experience is in making speeches and following the Democrats' rhetoric. He is no where near seasoned enough to hold the highest office of this country.

Posted by: Maggie | Sep 27, 2008 12:07:52 AM

Obama won the debate on his clear vision for the future of this country.

Posted by: Brenda | Sep 27, 2008 12:08:00 AM

Clearly McCain is more knowledgeable and has his facts right at hand while you got the impression that Obama had rehearsed his lines ad nauseum.

The pundits on ABC live in an alternate universe.

Obama had his talking points down but McCain has the firsthand experience and knowledge as opposed to a four day prep job from Team Obama.

Posted by: AquariusStar | Sep 27, 2008 12:08:05 AM

I give Obama a A++
Obama won the debate. A leader who wants change and knows how to make that happen. A Leader who can keep our country safe

A CHANGE WE CAN BELEIVE IN

Posted by: Brenda G. Bryant | Sep 27, 2008 12:09:01 AM

Geo. S. has got to go! If both candidates were so close on strategy and style and McCain beat Obama on accuracy - accuracy being more important to voters than style or strategy - how does Geo. S. say Obama won? George also commented he was "worried" about the lighting on Obama; he should be more worried about the yellow hue surrounding himself - most like eminating from spewing his "jaundiced" views. How about an impartial personality. Geo. S. looked like an ass-- and did George really reference McCain's height?? Has he looked in the mirror recently???

Posted by: Tina Martin | Sep 27, 2008 12:09:05 AM

I think Obama won, though he could have gone after McCain as one of the weathly USA citizens. As a geriatric nurse practitioners, I know seniors the same age as McCain-I fear for his health, and fear more that Sarah Palin would become president.

Posted by: Paula | Sep 27, 2008 12:09:08 AM

Posted by: Fred Gonnerman | Sep 27, 2008 12:09:17 AM

I feel Obama won this debate. Mr. Obama has more knowledge about foriegn policy than people give him credit for. He has some of the best advisors in the business on his side.
Mr. Obama is correct about Afghanistan.

Obama won. Good communication and insight without personal attacks.

Posted by: John | Sep 27, 2008 12:09:31 AM

McCain clearly won the debate. He is substance to Obama's perceived style. The media should remember that their job is to imform, not persuade. Shoving Obama down our throats leave a bad taste.

Posted by: angry black democrat | Sep 27, 2008 12:09:46 AM

I think Obama showed cool, class and and a command of the subject matter. While John McCain stooped to the same old sleezy lying politics that has plagued this nation. The thing that pissed me off was that McCain kept giving that crap eating grin while his nose kept growing from lies.

Posted by: Roderick | Sep 27, 2008 12:09:47 AM

McCain wasn't running away from a debate...he was in Washington doing the job he is being PAID to do....where as Obama, whom I am paying as an Illinois resident is too busy apply for a new job to do the job that I am currently PAYING him to do. Thank you Mr Obama!!! Can I have my money back please?

Posted by: k hughes | Sep 27, 2008 12:09:49 AM

McCAIN CLEARLY WON THE DEBATE.... McCAIN WAS MORE FOCUSED, MORE DETAILED, AND MORE PRESIDENTIAL LOOKING..... OBAMA WAS WEAK ON FACTS AND TOO GENERAL IN HIS RESPONSES.... McCAIN WAS IN CONTROL AND KEPT OBAMA ON THE DEFENSIVE.... ABC NEWS IS BIASED FOR OBAMA...... I LOST RESPECT FOR ABC NEWS TONIGHT AND WILL BE GETTING MY NEWS FROM AN ALTERNATE NEWS SOURCE.

George Stepanopholous gets an F for not grading the debate better. McCain stomped all over the back-tracking Obama. Obama's warm & fuzzy defense attitude doesn't work in real life.

Posted by: good texan | Sep 27, 2008 12:10:07 AM

Wow - great analysis by ABC. Every one asked on Nightline for an opinion is part of the Democratic hierarchy or the Obama campaign. Now that was really unbiased - NOT!!!

Obama all the way unless you want more of the same Bush economics that got us here in the first place wake up lets have some real change

Posted by: Johnny | Sep 27, 2008 12:10:46 AM

McCain made Obama look almost foolish and uneducated. It was quite surprising to see a speaker such as Obama stuttering and lost for answers. I have slowly been changing sides from Obama to McCain, especially since naming their VP mates. Tonight has given McCain the edge undoubtedly to most everyone like me that watched the debate. The next month will really make a difference.

Posted by: Carl | Sep 27, 2008 12:10:47 AM

LOOK I SEE THAT McCAIN WON THIS DEBATE STRAIGHT OUT, I DO NOT BELEIVE THAT OBAMA WON. HE DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO ANSWER SERVAL TIMES, BUT LIKE NORMAL YOU MEDIA KEEPS PRAISING A DEMOCRAT, I AM SICK OF THIS AND I AM GETTING TO THE POINT THAT I WILL NOT EVEN WATCH YOUR PROGRAM AGAIN. IT IS A SHAME THAT THE MEDIA HAVE TO PUSH SO MUCH FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS NO EXPERIENCE IN MILITARY OR LEADING ANYTHING AT ANY POINT AND SOMEONE WHO HAS LIED SO MUCH AND WHO HAS HELPED LEAD US TO THE ECONOMIC MESS WE ARE IN RIGHT NOW. WHY WON'T YOU AS THE MEDIA PUT OUT WHAT REALLY HAPPEN INSIDE IN THAT MEETING YESTERDAY WHEN OBAMA DIDN'T HANE A CLUE TO WHAT HE WAS TO DO. WHY DON'T YOU FIND OUT HOW HE GOT ALL THAT MONEY WORKING WITH RAINES AND HOW HE HAD A FRIEND THAT IS A TERRORIST. I CAN HE IS REALLY A MUSLIM AND HE IS OUT TO RUIN US AS A NATION WITH HIS CORRUPTED WAYS AND I HOPE THAT PEOPLE WILL WAKE UP AND REALIZE THIS. BY THE WAY I AM A VETERAN OF THIS WAR AND I AM PROUD TO SERVE AND WILL ALWAYS FIGHT FOR THE FREEDOM THAT OBAMA THINKS WE SHOULD NOT. I WILL NOT SIT DOWN AND MAKE FREINDS WITH A TERRORIST LIKE HE WANTS TO.

Posted by: HERB SPEIGHT | Sep 27, 2008 12:11:08 AM

It was a good debate, but I think Obama won by a large margin. McCain seemed to offer fewer facts. He kept saying he has better judgment and more experience, but I think recent events say otherwise.

Posted by: James | Sep 27, 2008 12:11:29 AM

Obama, Clearly, more presidential, honest and knowledgeable

Posted by: Kemet | Sep 27, 2008 12:11:33 AM

Obama was better able to answer questions in depth. He was the winner of this debate.

Posted by: C. DeB | Sep 27, 2008 12:11:39 AM

Obama won the debate. McCain is still pushing all these policies that have made America slide in the past 8yrs while China continues to grow economically, Iran continues to grow in threat and even Russia has grown in wealth through its oil and gas. America has continued to spend over $10B monthly in Iraq, and the economy is now prostrate

Posted by: Jude | Sep 27, 2008 12:11:39 AM

Obama won. And the flap over whether Kissinger urged direct talks with North Korea without preconditions was a non-issue. It is a distortion to say Obama was not accurate on this -- he made it very clear he was not claiming Kissinger said the presidents should meet without preconditions. Too many recycled talking points from McCain without any real analysis.
