Night Four Report Card: McCain's Moment

September 04, 2008 10:48 PM

A night after running mate Sarah Palin's big splash, John McCain made his case for the White House and Chief Washington correspondent George Stephanopoulos was back for the final convention installment of the "Nightline" Report Card.

And while Hurricane Gustav might have hampered the front end of the Republican National Convention, the party scored well in their finale.

McCain earned an "A-" in the critical "Breaking with Bush" category and another "A" for body language. The grades slipped to a "B-" in the "Does he get it?" category and a "B" for red meat, a category Palin nailed on Night Three.

Which party did better overall? Stephanopoulos held off on picking a favorite. They both had their own objectives to accomplish, he said.

So how did you grade McCain's moment and the close of the RNC?

And can you pick one over the other?

I actually think John McCain did better. I ive him an A He was having to address two audiences, one that likes Bush and one that does not. He did what he could. He came across as strong and with Palin I think they will have a very good team.

Obama seems to throw around a lot of words but I really still not hear any specifics from him either. And, how does he expect to pay for those tax breaks...not going to happen as the country has a deficit as it is. People are going to be disappointed not getting what they expected.

With McCain he tells you like it is even if you do not like it.

I was surprised to hear McCain could barely speak, his timing was off, he kept stopping at odd times. After a few beats, apparently the audience was coached to applaud.

I have liked McCain the person, but he is another Hitler like Bush. He also reminds me of Reagan, who with Alzheimer's could still put over lines, but no one was home.

I was astounded when Reagan became President after his record in California, where I was living when he sent teenagers to prison for years until they became 21. What was their crime? Living away from parents and wearing long hair.

But it looks like they have another one, a puppet who can speak the lines.

I thought McCain's speech was aweful! He once again is attempting to emphasize that he's a change agent. Well, last I checked he did supported President Buch 95 % of the time. He voted for the war in Iraq, he voted for Bush's harmful tax cuts which assisted the rich, and he agreed with Bush in not considering water boarding as a form of torture.

This does not sound like a "maverick" to me. Tonight's speech verified that McCain is out of touch and uses his POW days as a way to justify his candadancy. There is no change in the GOP... it continues to advocate for Anglo-christian values. It continues to be exclusive instead of inclusive with it's sea of white people with a few specks of color here and there.

A+

Neither candidate has realy explained how they are going to effect meaningful change in Washington. After this last year of Bush, whom I voted for, I was prepared to switch affiliations this time around. Unfortunatly, the Democratic party insists on putting up candidates that I can't identify with. They honestly believe that the majority of this country thinks like the left coast, liberal media loving, squeaky wheel getting the grease MINORITY. I don't expect the President of this country to be infallible, I expect him to bring the country together and win the bigger battles.

Tonight, John McCain showed me that he gets it. Not only does he get it, I believe he is sincere when he says he will put this country first.

When I saw the choices for each party's nomination for President of the United States this year, I thought "I can eat liver or papaya salad". (order it in a Thai resturant if you have never tried it. I can handle stinky and spicy, but not both at the same time). After much soul searching, I voted for McCain because he was the only person that would appeal to the middle of the road Democrats because of his record of Liberalism. After tonight, I am so glad, as many Americans must be, that he came out as the Rebublic nomination.
I nver expected him to choose such a solid choice for Vice President. I never expected him to give such a compelling, sincere, and unifying speech. I am in total shock and for the first time in a long time, excited about the future of this country under his leadership. If he gets elected and lets me down, I suspect I will never trust my own jusgement ever again.

Agreed, Edgar. George was right, John McCain clearly doesn't get it. To say that success only comes from a "good fight" seems rather oxymoronic to this preschool teacher. And alluding to 9/11 as "the worst attack on American soil in our history"? Perhaps he thought Pearl Harbor was just a drive by and that Gettysburg (and a whole armload of other Civil War battles) never happened. Straight talk sounds more like pandering to me.

Back when Ike was a president, not a hurricane, we should have learned that a good soldier doesn't necessarily make a good president.

After reading both convention's responses. It made me realize how much I hate John McCain, and I rarely use that term. He is running on people feeling sorry for him and his 4 yrs in prison. What do you think the last 8 years have been for 90% of Americans? Shame on the Republican party for using war and scare tacticts again! Are we that naive where we can't use our own brain to think? What I get tired of most is since 9-11 no one trusts or believes anyone nor extends trust to any American. Were all suspected of being a terrorist regardless of where we came from or the color of our skin. I am a white male too. What I get sick and tired of most is all the assistors that sadly have dominated our US society, what happen when we actually helped people out of the kindness of our hearts, didn't ask to verify who we were before someone decided to be nice to us? Be nice to us...hmmm almost like it isn't natural? Case and point when I go to the doctors office 90% of the time is verifying who I am by a few people/nurses etc(takes over 30 mins then you sit in a room for another 30 maybe more) finally the doctor comes in and you get maybe 2 mins with him before he he to go to the other rooms so dare you ask him to repeat himself because you don't understand what he rattled off so quickly. Take out verifying my SSN #, take out the buracracy and give me 10 mins face time with the doctor that's all I ask! How does this relate to the Rep's scare tacticts we are so worried over everything that will miss all the small details, and these are the most important. I think everyone from the insurers to all the other obstacles that afford us freedom should be removed not only from Washington but from American business too in all aspects. As it is I want to sit at home at use the pc and not venture out at all we are afraid the Middle East has us by the balls using the Wheel of Fortune approach to what price to charge us for oil/gas! Crap I better turn off the pc too, just this month the electric rate wen't up over $ 1 per/ whatever the measure I get scared opening the Natl Grid Bill now!

Anyway going back to politics. Yes maybe
John had a good platform which he used
to stand up for democrats too and the soft money etc. But even he is regressed. My biggest problem with McCain came early on when ABC News was on his plane and he got really pissed at them for springing a ? on him.
I saw that the rumor of his temper was absolutely true. Can we afford him to make a rash decision and say I'm pissed today let's bomb Iran! You call that sound judgement? I think not.

Okay now Obama, I admit at first I was a die hard Hillary supporter til I saw how she didn't use her mind only attacks at Obama and he decided to take the high road for once. Standing behind his word of trying to stay positive.

That was until Hillary foreced him to go negative. I am a NY Yorker and when Hillary was accused of not even being part of my state and decided to run against Lazio from LI NY.I had a mistake talk with a dentist I told him Hillary was going to beat Lazio. They laughed well she did. The reason was she genuinely cared about all not just Albany or NYC. She was the Maverick like Palin is being accused of now. Hillary did shake up NY a bit.I feel it was only partially successful. Hillary has a great mind and she was extremely nasty to Obama. I after hearing Oprah supported Obama said hmmmm...who is he ?
what is he about? I thought just like everyone else oh it's probably another clown trying for White House. To my suprise Obama was an eloquint speaker who made alot of sense and was articulate to boot! I was not convinced yet so I watched the debates and he shone thru as someone who really got it! I am proud to give him my vote and have told other how I feel too. I can only thank Hillary for being so hard on Obama, it makes this clown from Alaska ( a state with less than my whole counties total population) (no I'm not close to NYC either look lame and a piece of cake. I want to thank Hillary for being so tough on him for that reason.

I found Palin to have an extremely irrating voice and John has a frog in his throat he doesn't command my attention like others do. In fact hes ready for the rocking chair and after viewing him I'm ready for a nap .

I don't really care about experience as WDC is broke. It needs all new blood. Then again one has to be careful Palin now has troopergate going on in AK, hmmm NY just went thru that with our former Gov who was the Maverick of NY State. You gotta be careful who you step on. I don't think it was the callgirl either who had it in for Spitzer. It was a decision to spy on Bruno. After Spitzer resigned it came out that he was in the wrong. I believe that's the reason he stepped down and turned it over to his Leutenant David Patterson. So far he's done us proud and to top it off he's blind in both eyes! Spitzer was like Palin thinking he could change things in Albany. He did the McCain/Palin route and got thrown out of office. The Reps could learn alot if they only knoew about those facts as to why they should tell their horses to heel. lol

The only McCain I ever wanna hear about is the frozen french fry!

Yes Obama might not be the best for the job. But in the US he's the only with logical skills. I also applaud him on selecting Biden. It shows that he will get help where he is weak, and be proud to acknowledge that fact which takes a real man. Finally a monkey could run this country better than a Rep. So brains and tact is all we could hope for. That is Obama.

McCain was right on target. Maybe Obama has the gift of making a flashy speech. but it is the people of America that needs to get off their lazy butts and put this country back together. How long as American's are we going to sit back and allow our corrupt politicians in Washington destroy our nation. McCain said one thing that will work and that is to work together, wheather we are a D, R or an I, to get this nation back on track!!!
Get real people. We are American's, let's put our nation back as it use to be. It takes work to make change. It is not just a flowery word!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Doesn't matter what color we are. We are all God's children and He said if we pray and ask, He will restore our Nation.

Yes Obama might not be the best for the job. But in the US he's the only with logical skills and most outside of the US (other countires think hes a great guy) If they took a poll outside of the US as to our country bullying other countries the US approval rating from the world is probably like the senate at 9 %.
Speaking of the senate I thought the lady from Calif seemed very intelligent I think if possible Obama should oust her from being speaker of the House.
She was caught by ABC News at the "political convention party" outside of the convention. I think Obama should get rid of anyone who attended that party if he is to stay true to his word about Washington insiders.

I applaud Obama on selecting Biden. It shows that he will get help where he is weak, and be proud to acknowledge that fact which takes a real man. Finally a monkey could run this country better than a Rep. So brains and tact is all we could hope for.

That is Obama

I am a Hillary supporter, but I really like Sarah Palin. She is a breath of fresh air. McCain and Palin will be a great team.
Obama is all hot air, no substance. Biden is a good guy, but I will vote for McCain and Palin. They get it

After watching the two conventions, I'm shocked that anyone could still be undecided. There is such a stark, stark difference between the two highlighted parties.

The fact is, no matter how much anyone says otherwise, the polar opposite difference of the platforms show that we are a red and blue America with very little purple in between.

My final choice isn't just about my gut on who the best guy or gal on the ticket is (although that has a tiny bit to do with it). It's about the past accomplishments of the individuals both in and out of Washington, it's about the creativity of the ideas they have in addressing the major problems facing the country rather than the same old tired plans, it's about how much I believe in their approach to improving America, and finally the specifics of what each of these individuals has laid out.

For me, there is only one choice, but I really hope everyone votes based on facts and who they really think will be better for the country rather than pure emotion.

It would be unfortunate for this country to have someone like Obama, he needs to learn the ropes before ever taking on this Nation. I am fraid for our military and more importantly our country. He will be "talking with the enemy" while they are bombing us outside the door. I believe John McCain has our Nation's safety first and foremost in his heart.

Posted by: Tracy K | Sep 5, 2008 12:47:36 PM

I would rate McCain's speech an "A", I have to admit he is probably not a flashy speaker but then the flash doesn't create judgment. Judgment is where I think McCain has it all over Hussein Obama. Given that Obama would not have gotten the Iraq war right would have been disastrous to the USA long term. We would have been labeled as WIMPS by the rest of the world. I don't care whether the rest of the world likes us as long as they respect us. None of us understand what McCain went through in POW camp, most of us would have caved early on.

If anyone watched Nightline on Thursday night showing how both parties are wooed by the lobbyists and the big money people, it's clear there is a lot of room for ethical improvement. My hat is off to ABC for airing this, unfortunately it should have been on primetime tV.

Posted by: Alton | Sep 5, 2008 9:43:32 PM

I feel you misjudged and did not pay attention to what Obama originally said,
he wouldn't have sat on his butt and let them hurt us, he proposed not supporting Iraq because he knew that is was just a get rich scheme for oil investors. Bush lied he said that liberating Iraq would greatly lower our oil prices, it did the opposite! If you saw Obama's speech and watched carefully you would see he wanted us to go to war but in Afghanstan where Bin Laden has always been hiding. Shame on you both for suggesting Obama's naivity. He gets it but your mind is filled with hallucinations that are false.

As for MCains speech a generous C-, as George Stephan... talks about pulling ones heartstrings that's the only credit Mc Cain gets. On nightline page last night I saw a feed of Whoopi Goldberg of the view and she said Palin is on her last nerve. She said shame on her for discounting what Biden went thru, and pointed out we all have obstacles on some form Mc Cain might be a war hero, but hes also a coward as he stood up to DC for a short while. But he caved in and went back to his old ways..If McCain should croak in the next year or two no love will be lost. Palin is so smart that she is an idiot! She opens her mouth too much and that is what gets her in trouble. Our old governor Spitzer was like her I will laugh when Palin gets the same treatment for her communistic ways. American is about choice under Palin and McCain you might just imprison all of us you think it's bad with Bush, Bush will look like a savior under their ticket.

ABC, how can you have Martin Bashir on
Nightline. His voice is so unpleasant,
that I have to turn my TV off. I am not
the only one who feels this way.
