Closing Arguments: Obama Steps Off-Trail
October 24, 2008 12:05 AM
We focus tonight on Barack Obama, whose plane left Indiana earlier this evening and is heading to Hawaii, where he'll visit his ailing grandmother.
He's going to leave the campaign for two days -- so our question tonight: Will Senator Obama's absence have a detrimental effect on his hopes of reaching the White House?
Tell us what you think.

No, God's plan is God's plan. I would be upset if he did not go; family first right after God

I plan to vote for Barck Obama and I think if his grandmother is ill he should take the time to osot with her. I hope she stays alive until after the elctions as she was a great influence on his life and it would be a tribute to her for him to win.

you know a true leader who can walk away and the ship doesn't sink. Barack has already cast the vision and so many of his supporters and volunteers have caught it. his going to hawaii wont make a difference. it may boost him instead. I have voted. Go Obama/Biden 08

If it's God will for Barack to become President he will become President. God did not bring him this far to leave him.
My prayer is that God allow his grandmother see him win!
He has my vote.

I don't think his absence will have a negative effect at all. I think its wonderful that he's not so absorbed in winning the presidential race that he would not visit her, or would push back the visit until after the election is over and risk her getting worse or (God forbid) dying before his visit. As someone who was already an Obama supporter, it reinforces my vote for him.

After watching all of the debates, listening and watching nightline and other news sources and attending two pep rally's, I strongly feel Barack can do no worse than Bush (who no one voted for)! When he speaks he makes sense. So, his trip to visit his grandmother to me is important and everyone should have their mind made up who they are going to vote for. I do.

Two days with a beloved grandmother who was has been very instrumental in life is not going to hurt his campaign. Can one imagine the uproar if, God forbid, she were to pass, knew that she was gravely ill and did not go? Sen Obama is doing the right thing to keep matters in the proper perspective, and he shows what kind of character he has in doing so.

Senator Obama is doing the right thing. He will be back on the trail on Sat and his absence won't matter. The Lord has already chosen the new president and it will be revealed to us on 11/04.

As long as the American press corps gives Barack (Barry) Obama a pass on tough and critical questions, it won't matter what Obama does in the next days before November 4th. David Axelrod has deftly crafted an image that will take Obama forward to his ambitious destiny . . . and may God be with us and protect us all from harm.

This has all the earmarks of a weekend trip to Hawaii at his donors' expense, under the guise of visiting his granny who is supposed to be on her deathbed. Oddly, Obama announced the weekend trip last Monday, and although this is supposedly a mournful period he was yukking it up and dancing like a goose this week. He's using his granny for sympathy, that's all. Obama is a sick, sick megalomaniac. So is McCain for that matter. I'm now considering Nader again.

The FBI needs to go with Barack Obama to make sure nothing happens to his grandmother, since she may be the last person who can shed some light on the true parentage of Barack Obama. Barack Obama has failed to comply with the lawsuit filed by Philip Berg, so Barack and the DNC have by law admitted that he is not a United States Born Citizen. Thereby making him ineligible to be running for President of the United States.

Obama is doing the right thing by taking a couple of days away from campaigning to take care of his family. Probably wise to have a reality check and a chance to recharge for the home straight.
GO OBAMA!!!

Good for Obama!
We shuld be proud of him.... how can he do otherwise. And God help any nitwit who tries to criticize him for going to Hawiaii. Obama will win this election on the basis of his character, his judgment, and his integrity. This decision only cofirms why even lifelong Reublicans like me should vote for him!

I have nothing but deep respect for Obama visiting his sick grandmother - she is what matters. My prayers are with he and his family at this time! He will serve us proudly as the next President of the USA!

Diane, the tinfoil hat is unfashionable and unflattering.
At least Sarah Palin wears designer clothes!!!
You Repubs never get done shooting yourselves in the foot!
TOO FUNNY.
OBAMA = OUR NEXT PRESIDENT
McCAIN = FAIL

I think it is great that Obama has taken the time off to go see his Grandmother. This shows the world that he is human and that he does have true feelings. This is his last living patriarch, and if no one understands that, then maybe you need to get your own priorities in order. After all, he will be back in no time without skipping a beat. Go Obama!!!!! We are praying for you and your family, and we are behind you all the way.

Obama currently has a 190 electoral vote lead. And if polls in Indiana, Montana, Georgia, and North Dakota keep trending where they're trending, he could have a lead of over 250 electoral votes by this time next week. So, what exactly would be the danger of him leaving the trail right now? Preventing a landslide from becoming landslidier?
Posted by: ElodieStClair | Oct 24, 2008 1:38:35 AM
I think he needs to go see his grandmother. I also think that anyone who is saying bad things about that should stop and think if they want a president with feelings or one without. He is hurting as well and I hope she does live long enough to see him become President. It is hard to lose the one person that gave so much to you especially when he is so close to getting everything she helped him work so hard for. Go Obama/ Biden, Send McCain and Palin packing.
Posted by: Diane | Oct 24, 2008 1:43:08 AM
Go with Peace Mr. Obama. We will be here when you get back. Right now, your Grama is more important and she needs you. We need you, but we can wait.
My wife and I have already cast our votes for you.

It is a sad thing when an individual is so engrossed in worldly affairs and so self-centered that he/she cannot show compassion and love for family.May God be with Obama and his family. The Lord is his light and his salvation, whom shall he fear?

As someone who didn't get there in time when my father passed, I truly appreciate Barack Obama's efforts to see his grandmother at this important time. I would say the same if it were John McCain in the same situation. In fact, I donated another $20 to Obama's campaign just to help with the cost of the trip...only wish I could have afforded more.
To those of you posting your idiotic comments condemning his trip, I only have two things to add:
1. Since when is leaving a hotly contested election for two days with only ten remaining a good thing for a candidate?
2. Such comments slamming a guy for going to see a gravely ill relative shows why we have to vote out those representing you inhumane creatures and send you back to the exile of society's fringes where you freakin' belong...

Why is he just now leaving to go see his grandmother? If my grandmother was all of a sudden very very ill, I would take the next flight out to see her. I wouldn't announce it and wait 4 days. He certainly has the money and resources to fly out at the drop of a hat. Maybe he's going there to figure out where that darn birth certificate of his is, because of the lawsuits against him. Which I don't understand why the media is talking about Palin's clothing and not the lawsuits and questions about whether or not his birth certificate is real on his website. He refuses to hand over a real one, which would completely eliminate the lawsuits against him. Trying to hide something maybe? 3 months ago I was actually planning on voting for Obama, but now I will not. There is just too much unknown about him and that scares me. I'm not too fond of McCain either. I'm voting on the person that will do the least amount of damage to our country this election. That is pretty sad...

I do not think visiting his ill grandmother will hurt him.If anything, it will help him. We should all follow his lead and do the same thing. Without family, you have nothing. Jobs, friends and possessions can be replaced. Our country is in a crisis and now so his his family. Have a little compassion for the man. What goes around, comes around.

no this will not affect his rising momentum

I think it is wonderful that he is taking time off to see his Grandmother who is one of the great influences in his life. This has only reinforced my decision in wanting him for our next great President!

His grandmother sacrificed so much while he was growing up, I PRAY the good Lord sees fit to reward her for that by letting her see him win the Presidency of the United States! What a wonderful thing that would be for her!
I think he's such a honorable, kind man and for him to take this time off to be with his grandmother at this time just reinforces my strong positive feelings I have for him!
I voted last Saturday on our first day of early voting here in NM. I voted for OBAMA!
Posted by: Jan | Oct 24, 2008 3:16:15 AM
Absolutely, he is doing the right thing. I am so proud we finally have a candidate who can think with both his mind and heart, and keep the balance intact. Prayers to him and his entire family in all the difficult days ahead.
Posted by: Sharon | Oct 24, 2008 3:19:11 AM
Give the man some slack. No one knows what Obama's grandmother's doctor has said to him or to any one else for that matter. He left the campaign to be with her and that is what counts. Not very many would do that at this point in the campaign. I am voting for Obama. He has placed the people in this country in his heart and will serve not TAKE!!!!!! God Bless him and keep him safe.

@ Chelsi you can view Barack's birth certificate online!
Perhaps if you used "the google" and not that Ouija board to get your facts you'd know this.

OY! What a moron. They just keep slinging the same old mud over and over again. Can't ya'll find something new? We're getting tired of the same old McPain lies here.

Obama's grandmother is the one who put her earnings into Obamas education and he said this in the democratic convention. As Obama lost his mother also at early stages of life and visiting his grandmother in a stage where she needs help, he made the correct decision to visit her (totoo).
May the good lord Bless Obama. Clintons and the campaign would continue campaigning with Michelle Obama. McCian will spread some smears ( McCain has also become more of a socialist who spreads wealth around Pailn family members) and continue to talk about ayers until all the republicans cross the isle and join to Obama. What a sort of egotistcal bum would not visit his dying grandmother? I wonder about Pallin who has abandonned her young children. If she will betray them, she will betray her country. She thinks only of herself. Her $7000 a day fashion budget also demonstrates that me-first grasping attitude.

obama has allot more than 'his typical white person ' grandma on his mind like his vault birth certificate issue which he cannot continue to ignore thus explaining his trip to hawaii ...

I commend Senator Obama for his decision to travel to his ailing grandmother, who has been a lifelong inspiration to him, and I pray the Lord allow her to see him elected our next President of the United States of America. My prayers are with Sen. Obama and his family. May God Bless us all.

sentiments with Senator Obama's aging and ailing grandmother, though I REALLY WONDER about the recent story about his 1991 speech before the student body under professor Schellenger about "the youth of America needing to embrace the fundamentals of socialism in order to progress into the future"... this is contrary to his "where did they get that from ? " comments weeks ago....
Posted by: Brad | Oct 24, 2008 5:36:23 AM
I only hope this is nothing like what THE MARXISTS DID IN ANGOLA IN THE LATE 70'S AND EARLY 80'S that led to hundred of thousands of deaths, promising democracy and 'free trade' through whitewashed marxism that still scars those who remain, and a country that went literally bankrupt shortly before the 1991 speech.... about as bad as those preaching a godless america and hoping to reach office....
Posted by: Brad | Oct 24, 2008 5:44:23 AM
Oh really, are some of you that sick. Obama's grandmother is ill, and you criticize him going to see her. What is wrong with you, wouldn't you do the same???? I would hope you would and that people wouldn't critidize you.
What has marxism, his speech, and questioning his birth place have to do with visiting his grandmother????????
If this was McCain or Palin, would you be questioning this????

This only increases my respect and admiration for Barack Obama. He is once again demonstrating his outstanding qualities of character and integrity. I have already decided that he has my vote and this only reimforces my decision. I only hope she lives to see him elected and I can see Magilla on her way back to Wasilla.

Is this the same grandma that he "threw under the bus" in his book because she is white?
Posted by: tina | Oct 24, 2008 7:08:59 AM
PATTI,
OBVIOUSLY YOU HAVE NO BRAINS OR COMPASSION. PLEASE GO BACK THE CAVE YOU CRAWLED OUT OF WITH ALL THAT HATE AND RESENTMENT. OBAMA WILL WIN IF YOU JUST LOOK AT THE POLLS HONEY.
Posted by: WAKE UP! | Oct 24, 2008 10:44:03 AM
Obama is doing what he should. Seeing to his grandmother is the right thing and to hell with everything else. We know our next President is a respectful man, and we should also understand that family comes first. God Bless you Obama and "Toot" also. May God give her strength.
Posted by: Charleen | Oct 25, 2008 12:03:01 AM
No doubt he loves his grandmother. If you don't understand that you just want to hate anyway.
P.S. You can admit a flaw about a loved one and still love and support them. I don't think anyone capable of being objective saw grandmom under the bus.
