Closing Arguments: Ad Man or Buyer Beware?
October 30, 2008 12:03 AM
Much has already been made - and much more will be made - of Barack Obama's 30-minute, primetime television ad.
But before his production was even over, the McCain campaign issued this simple statement: "As anyone who has bought anything from an infomercial knows, the sales-job is always better than the product. Buyer beware."
So tonight, we ask you: Was the ad worth $3 million dollars to the Barack Obama campaign?
Tell us what you think.

I thought the ad was great. I watched it and did not realize that it was 30 mintues long because it was interesting from beginning to end. Then ending was fantastic.

For a group of people so highly offended by Sarah Palin's expenditure of $150,000 in clothes because "that money could go to much better uses in this bad economy", to spend THREE MILLION DOLLARS for a 30 minute "Infomercial" is not only selfish and irresponsible, but hypocritical and deceitful. This man talks about helping the "poor" in this country, but he squanders his money on things like this? I am appalled, but not surprised.
Posted by: Francisco del Valle | Oct 30, 2008 12:12:45 AM
As asked before!! Where did all the corrupt monies come from for the ad?? And NO there is no way I would watch the over kill and lies from his mouth.

I hope ABC is happy. You have fostered a huge following of class envy (hate?) and pushed a socialist down the throats of a very gullible public. I don't earn $200,000 a year, but I don't think those who do owe any more than they already pay. I am through with your network.

ONE PART IS OWNED BY OBAMA
THE LAST IS OWNED BY MOVE-ON.ORG , THE LIBERAL MEDIA AND MYSTERIOUS FOREIGN DONORS..

I personally will be glad once the election is over. Neither candidate is worthy of my vote but I will vote for the lesser of two evils. i would bet that if a third option were added on the ballot, "Get two more candidates", it would win by a landslide. As to "Ad man" or "Buyer Beware", it is definitely "Buyer Beware". I feel that our news media would sell their soul to see their candidate win. Our government and politics are way too corrupt, and unfortunately is so far gone that there is no return point. Neither candidate health plan is worth the paper it is written on. There is a simple way to reduce the cost of healthcare - get the government meddling out of policy making. Every issue that the government has tried to simplify has created larger administrative costs, not to mention greater government spending to manage and audit the changes. I wil stop before I get completely on my soapbox, but would be willing to further discuss healthcare costs with any soundingboard that would be willing to listen!!

What is he afraid of? Not winning, so he spend 3 mil to try to convince the voter that he is responsible? What a laugh!
Posted by: Sal | Oct 30, 2008 12:18:38 AM
The ad was worth it. I used to train salesmen and two of the things I really stressed to the people I was training was to try to impress with your speech and to present an air of success. People really like to be associated with success. Barack Obama if he doesn't make it as a polititan would be one of the best salesmen in history. As the old saying goes he could sell ice to an eskimo. I do not like him but I will recognize his salesmqn ship. I guess having a lot of experienc being a salesman allows me to see when someone is really doing a sales job.

I thought it was great. After much soul searching and researching, I have decided that I am going to vote for Obama/Biden. I am really really disappointed with McCain's voting record where as it relates to Our Veterans. I would think he more than anyone else would be very supportive of any benefits to our Men and Women in uniform. I also discovered that Obama really is NOT a Muslim, but with so many negative things having been said about him, it's truly amazing that clearly at least 75% is false. Sen. McCain does not seem to be the same man he was 8 years ago when he ran against Bush, as I supported him then, but ended up voting for Bush. McCain as V.P. would NOT rattle me, even now, nor would Biden, but Palin would scare the daylights out of me indeed. That is truly a factor. I think a lot of people are just under-informed. People, people, please do your homework. (I am an Independent voter).

Notice Obama doesn't practice what he preaches. There he goes spreading the wealth to the "big guys" of NBC, CBS and FOX. The money could have been much better spent on the poor and homeless, and probably given him just as much of a "push". I simply don't trust the man or those with whom he has associated, didn't watch his "infomercial" and definitely will not vote for him.
Posted by: Karin | Oct 30, 2008 12:22:39 AM
This is a fight for our country and credibility on the world scene. If John McCain is elected this country will never be a world leader/power again! Our credibility is so low in the rest of the world right now, it will take longer than I can imagine before we will regain what has been lost by Bush's time as president. I agree there a lots of problems the money could help but we need to change everything and Obama's presidency will do that.
Posted by: Patty | Oct 30, 2008 12:22:44 AM
I watched Senator Obama this evening and totally enjoyed listening to him. I will be happy when the election is over and he is our next PRESIDENT. As far as the money he spent for the speech, I do think it could of been better spent since we have already been listening to both canidates for so long now and my decision was made many months ago. I have already voted and just look forward to a CHANGE in the way this country is run and spends its money. George Bush has destroyed this country and embarrassed us all over the world.
Posted by: Joanne | Oct 30, 2008 12:23:58 AM
Obama reminds me of Fidel Castro, Adolf Hitler, and Mussolini. They all had that "Silver Tongue" Mr Obama uses so effectively. I am so concerned people in this country are so gullible. Remember history; The Germans wanted CHANGE. The Italians wanted CHANGE. The Cubans wanted CHANGE. They got change alright. I'm afraid we're going fast in the same direction as they did, but we're too stupid and too ignorant to realize it.
Posted by: Frank | Oct 30, 2008 12:24:50 AM
Sarah Palin claims to represent the average American. Her appeal is in her casual way of speaking, the fact that she is a hockey Mom, an everyday women that others can relate to. It is the Republican's who admire her for this that are upset with her 150,000 spending spree because they feel cheated, sold out. It is not the democrats who point this out, but her own supporters. Democrats are too busy trying to fix the republican mess.
Posted by: Boston | Oct 30, 2008 12:25:11 AM
Seems hypocritical that you praise a three million dollar, 30 minute infomercial but criticize the $150,000.00 spent of Sarah Palin's wardrobe. This supports the accusation about media bias.
Posted by: concerned citizen | Oct 30, 2008 12:26:42 AM
The ad was designed to rally Obama's base to go out and vote. Really, who else is going to watch such a thing? Maybe some undecided voters will like it, but I don't think that was the point.
Posted by: MIguy | Oct 30, 2008 12:27:31 AM
$3 mil! Instead of drooling all over Obama, why didn't ABC point out Obama's lie that he was "never going to accept public money" (that's how he paid for the infomercial) and point out the fact that the original $250,000 cut-off for higher tax rates is now $200,000. Instead of tooting his horn, why aren't you calling for the LA Times to release the video of Obama cavorting with a Palestinian terrorist?
Posted by: Lars | Oct 30, 2008 12:28:13 AM
I agree with the above comment, they should have spent $3million on Palin's clothes too.
The difference is that Palin is advertising herself as folksy and just a hockey mom - who happens to have a nice wardrobe from Nieman Marcus. The other difference is more important - who do you think leaked the cost of the clothes? Not Democrats... What you were witnessing was a the internal battles within the Republican party as they try to bring Governor Palin down a notch.
Posted by: MIguy | Oct 30, 2008 12:31:25 AM
I watched the infomercial, but honestly, I think to buy the time-slot on almost every major television network was over-kill. Was he afraid people wouldn't watch him unless he made sure there was nothing else to watch?
Posted by: Cassandra Washington | Oct 30, 2008 12:34:41 AM
I do not know but everyone keeps saying "Joe" was a plant it looks like there was a mole in the McCain campaign organization.
Posted by: larry | Oct 30, 2008 12:35:37 AM
I think it's very sad what's happened to the republican party. The only reasons they can give for voting for McCain/Palin involve name calling and distortions:
Spread the wealth - even McCain supports leveled taxes, it's nothing new and McCains policies give uneven cuts and taxes, McCain just gives the breaks to the rich.. which is just backwards
Terrorist - shame on you! That's a scare tactic that is on the verge of racism
Socialist - McCains health plans are just foolish: everyone pay your own way.. just like the loss of pensions and the creation of the 401k. What a mess that is! Obama's plan is simple smart and will help more people as proven by independant analysis
Posted by: Gary | Oct 30, 2008 12:37:42 AM
What a joke? Spend 5-6 mil on this lavish Hollywood production. Why not donate the money to the middle class that he talks about all the time. Can't vote for someone who breaks his promise on accepting public financing and then blows on something like this. P.S. why doesn't he produce his birth certificate or medical records??
Posted by: Ron | Oct 30, 2008 12:38:12 AM
I donated to the campaign and I'm very proud to have helped Obama put such a wonderful, positive message out for the American people. Worth every penny.
Obama has vision, THINKS BIG and thinks outside the box. The ad buy is proof.
The Repub response is predictable - of course, they're the experts at selling snake-oil, so all I can say to them is TAKES ONE TO KNOW ONE.
Posted by: Ed from MA | Oct 30, 2008 12:39:01 AM
Ed from MA, I supported Fidel Castro and donated to his "campaign" too. I was young and ignorant then. I'm sorry "well meaning" people like you will help this guy destroy this country. I can leave, I was not born here, but if this is where you were born, you have nowhere to go. Once everything this country has stood for and proudly hailed for over two hundred years is destroyed beyond repair, you will remember the warnings of an "Old Crazy Cuban" who did not have enough sense to save his own country from the likes of Castro and Obama. Moammar Kadafi, the Libyan Dictator was praising Obama in a speech two weeks ago. WAKE UP MAN, SAVE YOUR COUNTRY BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. This is not a Republican or a Democrat issue, this is AN AMERICAN ISSUE.
Posted by: Frank | Oct 30, 2008 12:47:32 AM
I found the infomercial to be arrogant -- obama is not a god, but thanks to his polished hollywood production with the warm fuzzy music in the background, he certainly made every effort to come across as a messiah ready to save the American people. Please! God help us if we fall for his trickery. I agree with the poster above who likened obama to Hitler, Mussolini, and Castro. That's where we might be heading with obama around. And ABC should be slapped for gushing over it so much! Really!
Posted by: Carla | Oct 30, 2008 12:48:12 AM
I enjoy Oboma's infomercial. The 30 minustes went so fast. He is an excellent speaker and will do well as our next president. He looks presidential and tops McCain all the way around. I am looking forward to the next 8 years!
Posted by: Joan | Oct 30, 2008 12:48:14 AM
you know to be a polititian you have to be salesman and address the people. being a salesman invloves looking your best. I fail to see the difference between Sarah Palin's clothes and the program by Obama.
They were both things to try to advance your agenda only Obama's cost a lot more. Individuals who have been criticizing Palin really don't have a valid argument anymore!!

Obama has my vote! Great 30 minutes. I hope McCain and Palin watched so they will learn how to talk to the citizens with respect.
Posted by: democratic | Oct 30, 2008 1:01:11 AM
I'm not really sure that I understand the argument that he could have used the money for better purposes? This is the reason why people contribute to his campaign, so he can win an election.
Not that giving money to charities is a bad thing at all, but I donated to Obama's campaign so that he could advertise and get elected. Money well spent.

Ed that is probably what Obama is going to do to all of us. You better get your vaseline supply!!
Posted by: larry | Oct 30, 2008 1:07:04 AM
I thought his ad was very informative. It was a relief to here someone talk about what they plan on doing for our country instead of cutting each other down. I am so sick of hearing about Joe the plumber and he did that, and he said that, he hung around with whom, etc. The 30 minutes went so fast that I could have listened to him longer.
Posted by: Pat Doss | Oct 30, 2008 1:07:08 AM
pat doss I will admit that Obama is a very smooth talker, but then again so was Jim Jones!!
Posted by: larry | Oct 30, 2008 1:10:03 AM
This is typical salesman style tactics. It is like the shopping network where they urge you to ring their number and place the order and be the first 50 customers to get a special offer.
Obama overplayed with his relentless self promotion and his infomerical is a waste and I suspect many Americans are tired of hiring about Obama and concerned about his lack of real experience.

Since Nightline showed so many of those heartfelt moments again for FREE, the question shouldn't be about Obama's spending, it should be about the wisdom of advertisers paying ABC for Nightline time slots. I won't waste another minute looking for real journalism on Nightline after tonight, so I won't be seeing any more Nightline ads.

I have read the nasty, mean spirited blogs and decided it was time to add my 2 cents worth. For the past eight years we have been led by a C student and look where it has gotten us: trillions of dollars in debt largely to the Chinese, a tanking economy due to lack of regulation and greed and a weakened military due to a endless war on two fronts. Individually we may be cowboys, plumbers and hockey moms but collectively we are so much more. I want America to regain a place of strength and dignity in the world. As a proud American I want to be represented on the world stage by someone intelligent, strong, dignified and articulate because that is what I am. I believe that man to be Barack Obama

ALL THESE PROGRAMS HE WANTS- WHERE IS THE MONEY GOING TO COME FROM? 50 MILLION PEOPLE NEW TO THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM- WHERE ARE THE HOSPITALS, NURSES AND DOCTORS TO CARE FOR THE PEOPLE GOING TO COME FROM TO EXPAND THE SYSTEM? DON'T GET SICK PEOPLE- IT WILL TAKE WEEKS OR LONGER TO GET AN APPT.

I guess in order to be a president is to look like a "rock star" and be a smooth speaker. Who cares about intrigrity or experience? Who cares if the money may come from foreigners? Who cares if there are so many secrets and not willing to provide proof? Who cares if this guy will sell America off which he already did by using all that money for this stupid commercial? Guess we want a glamous president. WAKEUP AMERICA! The media is so beyond bias. They could care less about us average people b/c they all so hook up looking superfiscal and sitting so pretty in their chairs or whatever it is that they doing. They are not surely telling the truth and unbias opinion. We don't to hear their opinion; just deliver the news! It's not news any more. I don't know what you call it anymore.
Posted by: The girl | Oct 30, 2008 3:27:34 AM
Nothing BO does pleases the simplest of fools, yes fools because that is what you all are acting like. The infomercial itself didn't take much to put together since most were scenes captured on his speech tours. He paid for what advertisers would pay if not more for a 30 second spot during the Super Bowl. (To any anyone who said that money could be better spent elsewhere, funny I never seen the pour of outcries for those DUMB commercials during the Super Bowl) He's a politician for crying out loud. He's selling his appeal to let people see first hand what he is about. It was done in good taste and timed just right. Hardly did I believe for one minute the McCain/Palin supporters would embrace it and have anything nice to say. It's a strange world we live in but change is on it's way for the good, BRACE YOURSELVES. I SEE LANDSLIDE ON NOV 4th. You heard it hear first.

Obama's remarkable ability to form and sustain a grass roots movement was brilliantly showcased last night.
He was able to raise a record breaking amount of money from individuals and thus is beholdent to us all.
His 30 minute presentation was money well spent as it showcased the America that supports him, believes in him, and will vote for him.
Ignorance will always run wild in the world, and the US is no exception.
Hatred will always run wild in the world, and again the US is no exception.
WHile I am saddened but the hateful comments here I am not surprised by them.
A vote for Obama is a vote for the masses, not the select few.

I find that anyone that I have met who still thinks voting for Obama is a good idea, either is not very intelligent or has not been paying attention to his corrupt rise to the top.

The ad was excellent - a fitting end to a well fought campaign.
The ad was for us.. middle America, and not for the elite few at the top.
While McCain would have been singing bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb Iran, Obama laid out a plan for real change.
Go Obama!

The Republican sour grapes about financing is because for once the Democrats have more money than their party to spend. I thought the speech was informative and maybe if the Repubicans can stop the negative campaigning for one moment and explain their policies I'm sure people would be willing to listen. But no. Instead it is their stategy to put out false calim after false claim. The Republican campaign method ... Fears & Smears. And as for McCain campaign not having the money I'm sure Mr. Mr. McCain's personal fortune could easily afford him the money needed for the half hour time slot.
As for the amount of money they keep comparing to the $150,000.00 wardrobe fee... Let's see wasn't it John McCain and his finance reform platform that stated that no campaign money was to be used for personal expenses. So before your go pointing fingers at others not keeping their promises be sure that your party is not guilty of the same.

Seems the Pubs are jealous. They know how Obama was great.
Obama made a classy appeal to America.
I guess they's prefer he use name calling like the 3rd graders McCain and Palin.
I guess he could have said Jon McCain is a lying adulterer bribe taking old man and his running make is a lying ethics violating power abusing misappropriating parrot.
But that wouldn't be right for the next President of the United States to say that.
Obama 08!

Its hard to find a more revered and loved American than Andy Griffith. When I think of a true American I think of him. Andy Griffith stands for truth and wisdom, and has been considered a faithful veteran, and someone who would never support communism. Andy grew up when the world was under attack by nationalism, and then he was a part of our national fight against communism. Often during his show, The Andy Griffith Show he would teach us lessons on right and wrong, and what the true American way is. His son in the show, famed director Ron Howard is also considered an American icon, and someone you can trust to do the right thng for America. Ron and Andy have put their support behind Barack Obama for President, because they believe he represents the BEST for America. They would NEVER support someone who didnt love this country as much as they do, nor would they support someone who was a threat to us all. Lets all be like Andy Griffith and vote for Barack Obama! Lets make America the America that Andy Griffith believes in! Obama/Biden, as American as apple pie!

Well he can spent all the money he wants, no wonder the nation is in economic crisis. All the poor people seems to have donated him fairly. $100 million of $150 million came from internet. The nation which hasn't learned history lessons until after the Iraq war will have to learn political science after this election. The whole Germany was looking for a change, and Hitler delivered them one.

Socialism -social and economic doctrine that calls for public rather than private ownership or control of property and natural resources. According to the socialist view, individuals do not live or work in isolation but live in cooperation with one another. Furthermore, everything that people produce is in some sense a social product, and everyone who contributes to the production of a good is entitled to a share in it. Society as a whole, therefore, should own or at least control property for the benefit of all its members.
This conviction puts socialism in opposition to capitalism, which is based on private ownership of the means of production and allows individual choices in a free market to determine how goods and services are distributed.

i CAN NOT BELIEVE THE EARLIER COMMENTS EQUATING THE USE OF MONEY FOR AN AD WITH THE USE OF MONEY FOR PALIN'S WARDROBE!!! THE MONEY HE HAS RAISED IS FOR ADS. THE PEOPLE(NOT CORPORATIONS) THAT GAVE THE MONEY WANTED HIM TO GET HIS MESSAGE OUT.
I'M FROM CANADA AND HAVE A HARD TIME BELEIVING THAT PEOPLE ARE EVEN CONTEMPLATING VOTING FOR MCCAIN. HOW CAN HE CHANGE WASHINGTON IF HE HASN'T FOR 26YEARS. THOSE THAT BELIEVE HIS MESSAGE ARE NOT TRUELY LOOKING AT HIS RECORD.

STUFFING BALLOT BOXES
Don't be fooled by infomercials: Obama's only relevant experience is in stuffing ballot boxes.

The half hour was AWESOME.The reason some didn't like it, like the McBush and his stupid running mate is beacuse first they didn't think of it ,second they didn't have the money and mostly it makes them look like crapPPPPPPPPP.
Monies sent to the champaing from little people like me is where this champaign got this kind of money so read it and weep.

The only comment or remark an envious man has about somebody else's success is to try and undermine the success and pour scorn on it. That is excatly what the GOP is doing. Rather than acknowledge the superiority and effectiveness of Obama's campaign and the positive impact it is having in the country, they would rather shoot Obama's success down, and use all the fear and smear tactics.
By virtue of John MacCain negative attitude and viliotric campaign smears, it further demonstrates that he is afraid and scared of Obama's victory. And he is sure jealous and envious of the Obama himself.
Obama, just keep being sweet. Stay positive and keep projecting that to the nation. Stay focused on your policies and remain consistent with the message, and I sure bet that victory is on the horizon for you.
John McCain, his Veepee, and everyone at Fox News know for sure the impact that Obama is making, but their hatred, envy and prejudice has blindfolded them from acknowledging that. And they will use every smear, lies and fear in the world to try and tear a good man down (Obama), but you know what, it WILL NOT WORK.
Obama, God is on your side, and fighting for you all the way. Greater is God that is with you than those that are against you.
I love you Obama and your Caimpaign.

I didn't watch it. I never waste time watching infomercials. I always hang up on calls canned or otherwise from political sources. And I always throw any snailmail political ads in the trash without reading.
You won't find any truth from any of these sources. Basically they're all nothing more than a way to spend campaign money.

I really wish we would have done the town hall meetings with McCain instead. This seams so phony to me.

I'm tired of all the campaign ads...worn out. But, I watched the Obama ad and felt a great swell of pride and hope. I have been an Obama supported for a while now and still never expected my reaction. It was a very visceral reaction. It made me realize how sad I've been about the state of my coountry and how Obama offers great hope and great ideas.
So, I'm absorbing my feelings just after the 30 minute ad and BAM, here comes McCain with a negative ad. He's such a grumpy, disgruntled old man. Talk about a buzz kill.

If the people for one minute think Obama is on their side they are in for a rude awakening. I don't perceive to know who the right candidate would be but either of these two are going to lead us down a hill of destruction. The rhetoric of Obama is just that rhetoric. Politicians are paid to tell one what one wants to hear then they do as they damn well please.
Our country is in an economic mess, war spending and face saving attitude selling out to every country that will listen. We ARE NOT the police of the world and need to defend our own country before we worry about the rest of the world. We have enough finger pointing going on in our country- we are in no position to tell the rest of the world how to live in peace and harmony. Yes, Barrack, probably is aan idealistic person representing Al-Queda but we put him in that position. Anyone who goes to Iran, Iraq or Afganistan for suggestions as to how to handle THEIR politics is naive. We need to take care of our homeless and people who live in the Appalacian Region of our country long before we need to bring immagrants over from Somolia, Mexico or any other foreign country.
Send the damn Statue of Liberty back to France and tell them to take in the "needy". They are the insulant country in the world yet they have a Statue like ours - but ours is being abused.
A vote for Obama is a vote for detruction of the U.S.
I've rambled enough - If I turn out to be right just remember where it came from. Change is not taxing everyone to death or staying in Iraq - both candidates need a lesson in Economics 101 and get rid of their overpriced advisors.

fairfax I can't believe your argument is vote for Obama because Andy Griffith likes him. What kind of reasoning is that. That is like me saying vote for McCain because Sylvestor Stallone likes him. Get off the kool-aide and get real!!!

Whew!!! Boy, you righties are frothing over Obama's appeal and I'm in heaven! We've suffered for nearly 30 years with a GOP-led Congress and the past eight with a moron in the White House. It's our turn. Time to put an educated and intelligent thinking man in office and regain our status as a world power. Time to get the hell out of Bush's fiasco in Iraq and do something in the U.S. with the $10 billion a month we're blowing over there. Time to get the huge corporations off the dole and put the money into the small businesses that actually employ most Americans. McCain is a an old "has been" whose star has burned out. He can't control his temper, doesn't know squat about economics and his choice of Palin is an indication of the type of advisers he'd surround himself with. How is any of this different from the Shrub? I've also given money to Obama's campaign and may he win by a landslide! GO OBAMA/BIDEN.

I personally am tired of the whole election but I felt like I had a fresh drink of cool water after watching the 30 minutes with Obama. I got hear him speak from his heart without having to be on the defensive. I've watched him with his family, friends and with strangers. I'm not gullible I believe he really wants to do what he says. Hey he can only try his best. Congress and the senate are responsible too. If I can cross over and vote for Bush ( Lord knows I had some issues with him) why can't some of you try to see another view. Why would you want to assasinate someones character? I received some many emails that called Barrack out of his name and said basically his life was worth nothing and that he had achieved nothing. WOW that's suppose to be Christian!!! Take a look a his love for community service ... heart for family and even taking heat for telling black men and women to stand up and raise our families. Yeah I hope they replay this ad in every Govement class. I was very proud that Barak had the courage to go beyond what others think and do what works for him. If you beleive in God then you know that he is in control and no matter who gets the presidency God has the final say on the events in this world. I think alot of you forgot that!!!

this was a terrible waste of money. In these hard times he should have been giving that money back to the middle class people who are hurting the most. He belongs in hollywood where all the actors are.

The point is, Senator McCain, that all of the Obama Campaign money came in mostly from ordiinary people, small amounts at a time, who believe in Obama's message. He is not a wealthy man and he is not married to an heiress. McCain makes fun of the money and forgets that it represents millions of supporters from Main Street.
What about all the RNC funds -- the bulk from lobbyists?
And, McCain was totally wrong talking about the delay of the World Series. Only the pre-game talk was cancelled -- and by FOX no less! The game started right on time.
A brilliant move and use of campaign funds. It will be something future campaigns contemplate.
