Palin versus Biden: Who Won the Debate?

October 02, 2008 11:50 PM

The vice presidential debate that ended at Washington University a little while ago was eagerly anticipated.

Would Palin somehow collapse into incoherence or ignorance on the stage -- as some parodies and pundits predicted? Would Joe Biden run off at the mouth with long-winded speeches and embarrassing faux pas?

In the end, the debate turned out to be fairly typical -- substantive, not terribly revealing, tightly structured and formatted, with polite open-ended questions giving both candidates plenty of opportunities to fall back on scripted responses and stump speeches.

So how did they do in their one and only chance to face-off? Our chief Washington correspondent George Stephanopoulos graded tonight's performances in the Nightline Report Card:

On Strategy:

Biden: A
Palin:  A-

Style:

Biden A-
Palin A

Accuracy:

Biden: B
Palin: B

Joe Biden won the debate. Palen was so scripted. She sounded like Gidget Goes to Washington.

A. DeLuca

Posted by: Antonia DeLuca | Oct 2, 2008 11:55:32 PM

Palin came with her notebook of one-liners and not much more than a few winks at the camera. She had little substance compared to Biden.

Posted by: anon thanos | Oct 2, 2008 11:55:42 PM

Palin had obviously been prepped hard, and anytime she faced a question for which she'd not been fed a line of response, she pulled out the hockey-mom winking and podunk cutsieness to cover for the fact that she has no actual knowledge or opinions of her own. I can't believe that pundits are giving her as high grades as they are. Biden won this by a huge margin.

your boy george is a horses ass ...he scored it a tie...but made joe biden the clear winner with his comments - maybe he needs a refresher course in basic math...will no longer watch our local abc channel....look to another news source for fair & balance reporting

BIDEN EASILY WON THE DEBATE ... PALIN DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT'S THE JOB OF VICE PRESIDENT ... OBAMA-BIDEN WILL WIN BY A LANDSLIDE ...

Posted by: jamesearlc | Oct 3, 2008 12:04:16 AM

The real winner was Gwen Iifl.
She proved she is a great commentator.
She was fair and consistent.

Between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin.
Joe Biden was the obvious winner.
Sarah made it through with her winks and smiles, but she still has a lot to prove to convince us of her readiness to be Vice President, and a possible President.

Posted by: vik | Oct 3, 2008 12:05:11 AM

Any person running for VP should show more interest in history. At least, memorize:( Sarah needs to.

In real debates, people get points for each question they answer. I respect George S. a lot, but I think he needs to get his ears and eyes examined.

- Biden won this debate by a landslide
- The only relevant grade George S. provided was with regard to accuracy. Thank you for that.
- Palin was clearly uncomfortable on stage
- Winking during a debate is simply not done (just check out real debate teams)
- Palin is clearly lacking a depth of knowledge
- Joe Biden knows how to structure an argument
- Most of us know that anywhere in Alaska is unlike main street anywhere in the US
- How many people actually have dinnertime together today? The concept is past. We don't discuss anything at the dinnertime table anymore. We text, we email, we blog. If these people want to change anything, I suggest they (and George) get current with today's communication media. I don't care if "dinnertime" table and "watercooler" discussion make things sound warm and fuzzy. They are a fabrication. Americans are nostalgic by nature. Let's not make it worse than it is.
- I like the facts. I think a president SHOULD stick to the facts.
- George, you too, should respect the facts. I realize you're on television, but this is not a popularity contest and you shouldn't be grading it as such.
- An "A for Effort" doesn't cut it in a vice-presidential debate. You have to really get an A.
- Just because Palin didn't perform as badly as people expected, doesn't mean she did well.

Posted by: Judith Hoogenboom | Oct 3, 2008 12:14:19 AM

It is very hard to accept Palin as a candidate for VP of the USA, and maybe President. Executive experience as Mayor of Wasilla AK, population less than a single high rise condo in NYC? Governor of AK with 1.2 residents per square mile. She did not look foolish during the debate, but all of that winking at the camera was too much.
She was well managed but not really well informed. She seems to think that just because we are in the low end of middle class, we will jump and vote.
Biden is a pro and was very polite during the debate and did jump on her errors. The main decision is still McCain vs Obama, wait till next week.

Posted by: joe sixpack | Oct 3, 2008 12:14:22 AM

It's just impossible to believe that even 1 US citizen could think that Sarah Palin won this debate...or even did well. I keep reading "did better than expected" and "held her own". Well, there's not much to "hold" there to begin with. No incoherence? Were you people listening to her words scrambling out of a question onto a Talking Point on which she was drilled and leaving the questions dangling. Then that winking! OMG! And PLEASE someone teach her to put some g's on the ends of her words and get rid of "you betcha" in every discourse. Biden's contrast was so much more skilled it was almost criminal that they allowed her to participate in the debate. Like Joe Biden or not, he certainly conducted himself in a much moore knowledgeable and Presidential manner.

Posted by: mmspear | Oct 3, 2008 12:14:26 AM

Sarah Palin looking very bad in the past weeks with the media based on the interview she gave, just defended herself. She did not do McCain or the republican party any good. In general she did very well, but for herself.

Posted by: Enoch Achie | Oct 3, 2008 12:17:58 AM

I repeat - Tonight just took the cake.
Geo. Steph. is the most disreputable, jaundice, dishonest wanna-be journalist I have ever had the misfortune to view. I am severing my ties with ABC altogether. The days of having unbiased reporting as adjunct to what one reads, discusses with peers, as a means of discernment are over. What a disservice your network and anchors are performing. Please, no longer call yourself a journalist but what you truly are; a whoring puppet for the Democratic party.

Posted by: Tina Martin | Oct 3, 2008 12:21:47 AM

Biden was chosen by Obama as V.P., and Palen was chosen to be McCain V.P.. But it was Biden who knew McCains record better than his running mate, and to state that you only been on the scene for about five weeks, don't say to me that she is ready step in as a V P, yet alone as President.

Posted by: marvin | Oct 3, 2008 12:22:42 AM

I believe that all the networks hire members of democratic party to give a un-bias opinion of people they have never related with. Such is the case of George Stephanolous, why would he think that Sara Palin or any other republican had won a debate or anything else. She made good points and was on they most point accurate. The republicans will have my vote

Posted by: Mary | Oct 3, 2008 12:30:36 AM

sarah palin is a fake, she studid her
winks and smiles and always the american
peoples best in mind. Where are we,? our
finances are a fiasco, we owe so much
money to other countries. It should be
said, charity starts at home and do not
live byond your means. Where are we
going to leave our children? Mrs Palin
is a big showperson, she should go to
the movies.

Posted by: annelise Shaffer | Oct 3, 2008 12:38:36 AM

Palin won...without a doubt. Biden, as usual, misrepresented McCain's votes in the Senate. Fact checkers will have a field day.

I have been continually disappointed with ABC, NBC, and CBS "news" that continually cover only one side of the story and are all propaganda for Democrats. Last night, Nightline covered several minutes of what Obama did that day but there was no fair treatment to McCain. I do not want the main stream media picking my President for me. Big surprise than George picked Biden as the winner. HA HA HA!

Lou (above) has it right. Fox News is the only channel that covers both candidates.

Posted by: mark | Oct 3, 2008 12:38:50 AM

HILLARY GIRLS, WE ALL SAY!!!

NO WAY NO HOW NO MCCAIN/PALIN

Senator Hillary Clinton issued a statement praising Bidens performance.
(CNN) — Hillary Clinton issued a statement shortly after the debate praising Joe Biden's performance:

“Tonight's debate underscored the stark choice American families face in this election," she said. “I've known Senator Biden a long time – as Americans saw tonight, he is a strong, passionate and experienced leader. Like Barack Obama, Joe Biden understands both the economic stresses here at home and the strategic challenges in Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the world.

“We saw yet again that Senator McCain and Sarah Palin will offer only more of the same failed policies of the Bush Administration. America's hardworking Middle Class families deserve better.”

Posted by: jESS | Oct 3, 2008 12:43:17 AM

Palin's folksy gig does not play well on TV. Biden won hands down. Also, since the McCain camp thinks Palin did so well in the debate, then I fully expect her to be available to the press for questions like all the other candidates from now on.

Posted by: Paige | Oct 3, 2008 12:43:50 AM

Biden won by a huge margin. Palin did not even answer half the questions. She looked better than she has in the past few weeks of interviews, but really, how could she not? Biden did a great job, Palin did an ok job.

Posted by: stacy | Oct 3, 2008 12:46:32 AM

Oh Yes Mark- Here is Fox "Fair and Balanced" coverage:

Frank Luntz quizzed his focus group on FOX (which was, strangely enough, sponsored by Budweiser, owned by Anheuser-Busch, of which Cindy McCain's Hensley company is the third largest distributor). Nearly all of them thought Palin did an excellent job and, perhaps, won the debate.

Posted by: Paige | Oct 3, 2008 12:46:54 AM

Mr. Stephanopolous

Truly bizarre that you would rate this debate essentiallty a tie. What sort of despicable disregard for truth and substance has become your baseline. Your smirky, soul-rotting collaboration with forces undermining the possibility of serious policy debate in this country sickens me, and should, in the end, profoundly trouble your conscience (if such a thing still exists) ...

Posted by: andthen | Oct 3, 2008 12:46:57 AM

It is hard to believe that the other side could not understand the responses of a well balanced leader like Gov. Palin. She has as much right to be on a ticket(She is more Qualified)than that Obama guy! PALIN WON THIS DEBATE HANDS DOWN!!!!!!!!! If you would only listen. McCain/Palin are having to run against obama/biden and the media!!!

Posted by: Terry in NC | Oct 3, 2008 12:47:45 AM

ANYONE WHO THINKS BIDEN WON THIS DEBATE THEN PLEASE GIVE ME SOME OF WHAT YOUR SMOKING

Posted by: TERRY | Oct 3, 2008 12:47:46 AM

Although Palin did much better tonight compared to previous interviews, Biden's experience and knowledge are truly needed. Palin definitely has a gift of capturing people's attention but her answers are scripted and well rehearse. I would love to see her thinking on her own two feet. This is not the time to vote party line. We need to pick the person with the most experience and knowledge for the job. Palin is definitely not that person.

Posted by: Linh | Oct 3, 2008 12:48:45 AM

Biden did a great job tonight, but so did Palin. Both of them performed so much better than the top of the ticket.

Seems that all of you who are critcizing Palin's efforts obviously watched and listened to the same commentators after the debate...you think maybe you could come up with something other than personal attacks or perhaps an original thought?

Of course she prepped hard for the debate...and Biden didn't? They both used talking points through out the entire 90 minutes.

Biden had what, 10-12 major debates throughout the primaries...this was her first national debate and she did an excellent job.

Just because she expresses things that you don't agree with doesn't mean that she didn't do a super job tonight.

Posted by: Pat | Oct 3, 2008 12:48:58 AM

There is no question tha Joe Biden won the debate. Now let's hope the American people win.

Posted by: Kittey | Oct 3, 2008 12:49:05 AM

Joe Biden won hands down. Do people want to have a beer with Sarah Six Pack, no thanks, the last president you voted for to "have a beer with" made a mess of this country. We need a President that is smart and intelligent and doesn't sit in a bar drinking a beer with Sarah Six Pack and a so called "maverick". We Need Leadership, Not a beer!

Posted by: Robert Romero | Oct 3, 2008 12:49:31 AM

The only way you think Palin won this debate is if you have no concept of specifics or what makes up a complete sentence.

Posted by: That's Funny | Oct 3, 2008 12:50:06 AM

How ironic that the Palin bashers call her a "showperson" with no substance. Did they watch the Obama/McCain debate? McCain had all of the substance and Obama was the show person. I prefer my president to have substance. And of course Biden knows McCain better than Palin. Biden has worked with McCain for decades. Also, does Biden think that the end of the ice age was also man made?

Posted by: Harry | Oct 3, 2008 12:50:29 AM

Palin has not have won in the eyes of the political elitist of ABC or the liberals on this board here.

BUT She certainly won in the eyes of the common wo(man) on the street. She speaks straight into the camera and connects with the people who are going to vote McCain/Palin in.

Apparently the Luntz poll of undecideds proved immediately following the debate proved that.

Posted by: Joan | Oct 3, 2008 12:50:46 AM

Paige,

Go back to MSM and drink some more Kool-Aid. Obviously you like being pulled around by your nose.

Posted by: mark | Oct 3, 2008 12:53:17 AM

Terry Moran and George Steppenapoulas were out-of-the way kind in calling & scoring Palin's debate performance. >>no point loss for ducking, side-stepping or changing the subject? She was quite tentative at times. At least there were outside panelists on ABC who called it well, as will the vast majority of outlets tomorrow morning.
Losing my faith in ABC lately.....

By the way, Gwen Ifel was a fair moderator. All that hoopla from the Republicans about her and the book was a bunch of crap. There was no Obama/Biden bias tonight. In fact, Palin showed she has plenty of claws. Biden was expected to act like a gentleman while she has a free go at him. I don't see the press championing Hillary Clinton when she took on 6-8 males during the previous debates. Why do we have to treat Palin with kid's gloves? If she wants to play in the big league then she can take all that comes with the game. That includes dealing with the good old boys's group. Hillary did.

Posted by: Linh | Oct 3, 2008 12:57:28 AM

Wake up america Obama and Biden are saying what you want to hear not what they will do. They are washington elite and will say anything to get elected. Why would anyone cut there own throat, to be patriotic GIVE ME A BREAK.

Posted by: Ken | Oct 3, 2008 12:58:03 AM

If you really believe that about Palin being a trained monkey, then to be fair, you have to say the same thing about Obama. Unlike McCain, Obama clearly had no command of the issues of foreign policy in his last debate with McCain.

Posted by: Harry | Oct 3, 2008 12:59:35 AM

This woman does not belong in this arena....She need more training in the politic arena before she qualify running USA. Please Sarah go back to college an signup couple history course than maybe run again in 2016. Good Luck

Posted by: John | Oct 3, 2008 1:00:25 AM

Governor Palin has only been in national politics for about 5 weeks. Senator Biden has been in national politics for about 36 years yet she had him on the ropes thoughout most of the debate. She was definitely the clear winner. On two different FNC (text in your vote). She won 86% to 12% and 87% to 11%.

Posted by: Gene Koscielski | Oct 3, 2008 1:02:50 AM

Many people in this country are now beyond objectivty concerning politics. What disturbs me the most is this bias has thoroughly penetrated the media. I cannot come to any of the mainstream media sites and believe what I read AT ALL! I come out of shear morbid curiosity. This bias in media has become disgusting to fair minded individuals. If you dont change, you will continue to lose audience. For what its worth, I think they both did well, which was expected of Biden and an unknown for Palin. That gives the Republicans a slight overall edge in this debate this debate.

Posted by: Chris | Oct 3, 2008 1:02:51 AM

I am sorry but it was so obvious Joe Biden knows how to be the Vice president of the US, and Sara Palin knows how to wink and flirt her way through answers she can not come up with

Posted by: JAMES S BURNS | Oct 3, 2008 1:03:47 AM

Joe Biden most certainly won as far as I was concerned. It sounded as if Sarah Palin was trying to give a resume!! Joe was not boring, I want straight answers and for the most part Mr. Biden gave the facts, where Palin didn't. This isn't supposed to be comedy we are facing real issues in America that seriously need attention. The winks and Joe six pack comments were not amusing. Biden won hands down.....I'm now leaning strongly twords Obama! Not the comedy team! P.G. Montana

Posted by: Paul G. | Oct 3, 2008 1:04:46 AM

I am a proud Replubican but Palin did not do well tonight at all. She did not answer some of the questions. All I heard from her was how great she did in Alaska. Sorry but this does not make me feel better about our economy. She could not really express what the McClain/Palin ticket will do for us. So I am here to say I am not sure my vote will be for the Republican Party. I will see how the next debates go but Palin is hurting alot of Republican votes in rural Colorado.

Posted by: Trina Swoopes | Oct 3, 2008 1:06:08 AM

Palin did OK tonight, but, as she warned at the beginning, she did not answer the moderators questions. When asked about bankruptcy laws she talked about energy policy. If the moderator lets it fly, so be it. I would still like to see her sit down with any of the Sunday talk hosts. And no, Hannity does not count, no more than Obama talking to Olbermann does. Obama also sat down with O'Reilly though. I would love to see Palin sit down with Rachel Maddow for 15 minutes.

Posted by: Hamilton | Oct 3, 2008 1:06:42 AM

palin won! i'm sorry you don't eat with your family it sounds like you need to work on the basics. Life has evolved from the wife at home cooking dinner husband gets home at 5:15 unless he's got a function at the eagles moose or vfw. But guess what people in a family eat together. The place varies but the act still happens. Ge over it. AND BY THE WAY STOP DRINKING THE KOOL AID! IT WILL HELP IN THE LONG RUN

Posted by: bill | Oct 3, 2008 1:07:37 AM

Once again Palin lacked substance. She failed to identify what separates her and McCain’s policies from the current Bush policies. They claim their different from the Bush administration but how? There were times during the debate that she didn’t answer the question. When she didn’t know how to answer the question she referred back to the topic of energy. Also, she based the responsibility of a VP based on what Cheney said, and she even stated the VP should have more power. But what really got me was her so-called concerned about the No Children Left Behind. Alaska has the highest rate of domestic and sexual abuse for women and children. Yet, as mayor and governor she has failed to implement any laws that protect these women and children. How can these children learn if their being abused at home? Yes, I believe she did give some funds. However, why didn’t increase manpower on the police force to help these families. Palin needs to go back to Alaska and straighten out the mess there before she tries to tackle a bigger mess. Finally, she kept attacking Biden hoping he would respond but he didn’t fall for her games. Personally, I doubt if she won votes over. As a matter of fact, after watching the debate 18% of the undecided said they were voting for Obama and 10 % said they were supporting McCain.

Posted by: Rebecca33 | Oct 3, 2008 1:07:42 AM

Palin didn't even answer half of the questions! Biden knew what he was talking about and had a solid strategy. OF COURSE all the Mccain/Palin supporters are going to say palin won just because they want to believe she did. OPEN YOUR MINDS

Posted by: kjyfktudkuy | Oct 3, 2008 1:09:46 AM

"Palen was so scripted. She sounded like Gidget Goes to Washington." A. DeLuca OR Obama during his last debate ...

"How many people actually have dinnertime together today? The concept is past. We don't discuss anything at the dinnertime table anymore. We text, we email, we blog. If these people want to change anything, I suggest they (and George) get current with today's communication media. I don't care if "dinnertime" table and "watercooler" discussion make things sound warm and fuzzy. They are a fabrication. Americans are nostalgic by nature. Let's not make it worse than it is."

Now this is just a SAD statement, and one that doesn't ring true far and wide. We have a VERY active family, but we do make a point of having family dinners and discussions. We are INVOLVED in each others lives. To downplay one of the simplest of family values is exactly why this country is in the state it is.

Palin won the debate hands down ...
NBC’s Tom Brokaw: “I think they're whopping it up in Alaska tonight and all those parties across the country for the McCain campaign because I thought in terms of theatrics and personal style out there, you can see why she's such a successful politician in Alaska. … And any question asked of her, she talked about John McCain's tax cuts, his record as a maverick, about his determination to reform what is going on and about energy independence. She had been called, as you know, the bumper sticker is coldest state, hottest governor. You saw some of that tonight.” (NBC’s “Vice Presidential Debate Coverage,” 10/2/08)

1984 Democrat Vice Presidential Nominee Geraldine Ferraro: “I really wanted her to get up there and do a good job, and I think she did. … I think it was a good evening for -- certainly for Governor Palin. … I think she showed she is certainly capable of going toe to toe with a man who is more than qualified to be vice president, if not president of the United States.” (NBC’s “Vice Presidential Debate Coverage,” 10/2/08)

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews: “I think she's an extremely appealing politician. Her energy level was much better than Biden's. I think Biden lost a little speed there during the evening. I think she came across terrific in terms of presentation.” (MSNBC’s “Vice Presidential Debate,” 10/2/08)

Posted by: Stunned | Oct 3, 2008 1:11:50 AM

Biden won the debate hands down, based on the facts and his experience. America must learn to walk softly while carrying a big stick. The world has grown too small for us to continue to use the threat of war as a way of keeping the entire world at bay. Sarah's frequent references to Mc Cains' war experience doesn't reassure me of his ability to keep us safe. He wasn't the only POW. I feel insulted as a woman and a mother that she has little knowledge or experience to be a heart beat away from the presidency. She governed less than 25,000 people total. We've had female judges, senators and representatives with superior abilities and are more refined.

Posted by: P. Louise Wilson | Oct 3, 2008 1:12:42 AM

Great job to Sarah--a win personally showing the media and individuals who judge a person not by accomplishments but by hair style and accent a truly gifted individual; and a win for the ticket showing the contrast between looking backward (Biden/Obama--how many times was Bush brought up?) and looking forward to implementing policy that cuts government tax, spending and pork. KEEP IT UP SARAH

Now, I know George Stephanolous has received a lot of slack from the Republicans for his consistent siding with Democratic party and their candidates, but I have always felt for most parts, he was right with his reporting. But tonight, something happened to him... He got it all wrong!!! Biden hands down won this debate. He showed all of America he's an experienced Political Leader!!!! Question for George... What happen? Didn’t you see that robot in the black dress too? Did I miss something?

This country is in way too much trouble economically, militarily, and socially to elect someone who thinks winking at a camera is going to portray her as a leader. She did better than I thought she would but not enough to erase all the other moronic images that we have seen. We need intelligence, compassion and vision in our next leaders and Senator Biden fullfilled all that and more this evening. He won hands down!

Posted by: marvella | Oct 3, 2008 1:21:09 AM

If I have to listen to Joe Biden for 4 years as VP I think I'll throw up. Thank you Governor Palin for making the debate worth watching.
Biden told me alot of lies I really didn't need to know.

P.S. Has anyone ever told him - he talks too much!

Posted by: beth | Oct 3, 2008 1:32:31 AM

Geo. Steph. needs to preface any statement he makes with, "I am a Democrat and my job with ABC is to make the Dems look good". From now on I will change the channel when politics are discussed on ABC to get a truly balanced report. ABC should be ashamed and get their heads out of the sand. Sarah Palin came across as the real thing and made Joe Biden look like a rookie.

Posted by: JC | Oct 3, 2008 3:13:11 AM

Biden was the winner, for sure! Palen embarasses the females of this country as she continues to manupulate, yes even you George, with cutesey wootsey winks and ya's. Her lack of experience and education were blaring and blatant! That 3-day prep was very obvious as she really didn't answer any of Ifill's questions as you will recall.
She doesn't hold a candle to Hilary Clintons well earned female credability. Wake up America.

Joe Biden won. Palin didn't want to answer the questions that Gwen was asking because her debate was so scripted. She kept wanting to return to previous questions or to change the subject when she was under pressure. Throughout the entire debate Palin played her cute smile card, which I really hope I doesn't work on the American people. Joe Biden was clear and concise although I wish he had backed some of his accusations up. Point is, Biden won.

I am a woman and think that the standards that we have for a president and vice president should be the same for a man and woman. I want a president and VP that is intelligent, has good judgment that not only respects the American public, but that is also is respected by both Americans and the people and leaders of other countries. I want a President I can be proud of, Barack Obama and Joe Biden have those qualities. I feel that with Sarah Palin and John McCain we are dumbing down expectations. I disagree with George Sephonopoulos, Palin winking her eye (a number of times) is not connecting with people. It is immature and manipulative. What would we call it if a man did that? Stupid. Palin comes across like she is running for student council. Palin was able to memorize answers, but she still was evasive, started to repeat herself and is righteous in her beliefs. Instead of trying to justify or find reasons why people will vote for McCain and Palin, just say people will vote for them because they are reasons (good or bad) they are Republican, not because of any good reason. McCain feels he deserves to be president; he would be another Bush-arrogant, stubborn, vindictive, not smaart, insensitive, and a knee-jerk decision maker. Also he is sexist--I am referring to his gorilla rape joke, his mean remarks about Chelsea Clinton,etc----no excuses, he is a jerk who doesn't deserve the office of president. What kind of woman would want to run on a ticket with him. Palin may learn the words and answers, but she will never be honest or smart enough, just a female Bush. Lets not lower our standards to "style", eye winking, "Joe six-pack" and phoney folkseyness. The Presidency is too important to dumb it down, we already did that for eight years.

Biden won the debate because he can think by himself. Palin keep repiting a recipe but we still don't know what she think, she is not ready to be vice president because we don't know what she would do as president if the circunstances arrive.
Period.

PALIN CLEARLY WON DEBATE.

Biden won the debate because he touched many points on what we need and answered the questions.Palin didn't answer most of the questions. We need a change,8 years of misery,I cant take it anymore.Enough is enough.

John, don't quote scripture and then back people who are known for being against judeo-christian values due to financial backing or lack of morals. If you want to vote liberal, just say you like the democrats and their candidates. Christians & Jews already get a bad rap because of people popping off like that. Quit using scripture as a punch-line.

This was not a debate between Biden & Palin but between Biden & McCain. All he say John McCain - John McCain - John McCain- John McCain

Palin was cute, funny and outgoing...she looked at the camera and even winked.....but THIS IS NOT A BEAUTY PAGENT!!! She avoided the questions because she only had the answers that she rehearsed so she had to stick to those.... I was offended by the type of language she used and all the smiles... she even gave a "SHOUT-OUT"!!!! If Obama would have given a shout-out we would have never heard that last of how inappropriate it was!!! She was out of touch and it scares me to think that people think this is good enough to run our country???!! I am a female, I've been a single mother, I'm a Nurse not a soccer Mom because some of us do work... I have 5kids, and I felt misrepresented by this lady who tried to use her cute face and charm to avoid the discomfort of her inexperience and lack of knowledge...SHAME OA EVERYONE WHO REALLY THINK SHE DID WELL... God help us if they actually win :0( OBAMA FOR PRES!

Those TV commentators are gullible. They did not even think that Palin's answers were rehearsed and scripted. She did not answer the moderators questions directly but would talk about what is next topic from her notes. The debate was really not a debate but a speech which you hear everyday from the campaign. I want to see her in Meet the Press, The Nation and this week and we'll see if she can answer intelligent questions.

Posted by: Violet | Oct 3, 2008 10:18:46 AM

I wonder why ABC,CBS, & NBC do not ask the same questions to obama/bidin? They do not continue to push them as to what Papers and Magazines or where they get their information from! If they did we would see how dumb they really are!!! I am glad Gov. Palin can go far beyond their expectations!!!!!!!!!!!!

The George Stephanopoulos' scorcard includes Strategy, Style and Accuracy...what about answering the question !! the essence of debate is Argument and Evidence, and glossing over Palin's stated unwillingness to answer questions or stay on point is more of the same Dumbing Down of America. Shame on Nightline and on Moderator Gwen Ifill for not letting Palin simply do her sound bites

Good Morning everyone, I would like to comment on: Likes2Fly and to Erin, Excellent comments. Yes I agree with your comment about the High Office of the President of the United States Erin, your a very intelligent person. Americans are perceived as "dumb Americans" over in Europe, and to put some in who can't even communicate on a intelligent level will only cement what they perceive us as.
Likes2fly, yes that is what Proverbs 10:10 says," he that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall." Proverbs is the book of wisdom and understanding given to man by God. If elected what is Sarah Palin going to do wink at the President of Iran? or the Dictator of China to get her point across? So what sorrow will this woman bring? can America get any worse? I say yes, with this winking. Not all cultures perceive that gesture the same, I thought that was very tacky and provocative gesture from a "so-called" professional woman.

Leave it to George S. and ABC News to give us 'mickey mouse' reporting in the debates, and to score and evaluate them based on the most superficial criteria. We must all be that dumb, right? Come on, get real and do a professional job (if you have the guts, which I doubt): base your debate evaluations on 1) did the candidate answer the questions?; 2) did the candidates' demonstrate real knowledge and command of the issues, as well as the ability to articulate and explain policy positions with attention to (at least a few) specific details. If you did that, it would have been "Joe Biden at least knows what he's talking about; Palin doesn't have a clue."

Sarah Palin was the obvious WINNER.

Joe Biden is at least better than Obama!

Wish ABC would drop the bias.

I think both did a great job. If Biden was running for President and Palin for VP now that would be a great election they would make a great ticket! One from both sides, both fairly honest out spoken and committed canidates. Also, If Biden was running for President it would be really hard not to vote for him. I am not impressed with Obama. I however am impressed with Biden. I like John Mccain for the fact he has served his country and paid a huge price and that he has been a maverick in some issues, but not in all issues that are the most important to the American people. This election is going to be very tough for us non-partisan people.

Posted by: Klop | Oct 3, 2008 11:53:07 AM

Palin clearly won. She pointed out that prior to Biden be tapped for VP, he stated that Obama was not ready to lead and would have ran on the John Mccain ticket.

As for Biden being more knowledgeable on policy, what a joke. Go to factcheck.com, he lied to the American public 14 times in the debate. He was getting beat so bad that he had to fabricate to win.

To those who thought palin did a good job, you will be surprised how she'll do if she were a guest on meet the press, the nation, and with Wolf blitzer at cnn. You will probably admit how stupid she is.

Posted by: Violet | Oct 3, 2008 12:11:59 PM

how can anyone believe Palin won the debate? Obviously , you have never learned the ACTUAL proper way to debate. She was completely scripted

Posted by: randy | Oct 3, 2008 12:36:58 PM

The liberal media has this country completely brainwashed! They want you to buy into this idea that the Republican Party has single-handedly screwed up this country which is completely false. This was referenced in Bidden's speech--which to all you people out there was rehearsed & scripted just as well as Palin's. No one with any sense would go into a debate of this caliber unprepared! We keep hearing about what the Bush Administration has done to screw up this country, but the thing is we're sick of hearing about the problem. We know what's wrong--now we must put into play practical & common sense solutions that we get us back on track. Shame on you people for buying into what the media feeds you! I admit, Palin wasn't perfect & I won't even say that she won, but she did accomplish her goal--to become a credible candidate for the vice-presidency. Furthermore, I wouldn't go as far as to say that Palin avoided questions, but she kept going back to harp on issues that she clearly has much expertise with such as the energy crisis--which I believe she tota
