Closing Arguments: Obama's Madame Secretary?
November 15, 2008 12:05 AM
From bitter Democratic rival, to campaign ally, to...Madame Secretary?
So did he or didn't he? And will she or won't she?
The answer to the first question is yes, president-elect Barack Obama did discuss with Hillary Clinton the possibility of her serving in his administration as secretary of state. They met yesterday in Chicago.
Sources tell ABC News that it was a "very serious conversation," but no firm offer was made and there are other powerhouse names that are also uner consideration.
For now, her level of interest remains unclear.
So, tonight, we ask you: Do you think Hillary Clinton would the right pick for secretary of state?
Tell us what you think.

Hillary would make a perfect Secretary of State. She's definitely qualified and experienced.

Yes, A Big Definate YES. She is, after all, on her way to the Presidency herself in the future :) and all her experience would be an asset to Obama. I understand why he picked Biden for his Vice President, his Foreign Policy experience. Now he needs to be just as smart and chose Hillar as Secretary of State. She is a good example of what a Woman President should look like, not a laughing stock such as Palin. Hillary sets a good example and a PROUD example for all women.

I think Hillary would be a great Sec. of State.

Like myself she is a 'Rebel with a cause' I believe she is qualified to be President. I believe she was more than qualified to be VP. She is Very qualified to be Secretary of State. Go Hillary!

Yes, I believe Hillary should be Obama's pick for Secretary of State. He should have picked her for his VP!!!

I agree that Hillary is the better choice and I pray she takes it!!! I know she will be excellent at the job. Hillary Clinton is a very smart woman....smarter then Sarah Paln any day!! Speaks very intelligently and knows her stuff!!!

I have no idea why you guys think this is a 'big debate' .
Barack Obama cant tell Hillary Clinton to come all the way to Chicago to discuss the job and NOT offer it to her if she wants it. Thats ridiculous. She owns half the democratic party.
Getting behind Obama is one thing ,having Obama drag her all the way to chicago then slap her in the face is another.
Richardson is a back up offer. There is nobody besides President Clinton himself who would make a better Secretary of State for Obama than Hillary.
Obama has to deal with so much domestic crap and Biden has to deal with the cranks in his own senate to make sure they dont get to left wing on us all .
Clinton is the perfect choice to handle the foreign affairs.

yes, I believe that Senator Hilary would be the right choice for this office, as she possesses all the right qualities. She will certainly make a super secretary of state.

It seems that the only time that politicians remember the wrongs, short comings, vices, and defects is when they are running for election.

we need the most progressive and dare i say, liberal, people... of course they need to have brains and be practical too.. but i wonder if clinton isn't a bit too centrist for the real changes that need to take place... i realize the ship is big and the rudder (however strongly voted for) is small, and it will take time for the ship to move in a different direction, but, hillary might be better used to help with health care

Hillary would be a sensational Secretary of State, much more qualified and preferable than Kerry or especially Richardson, who I personally don't trust. Hillary is extremely intelligent, experienced, personable and strong--I would love to see her actively involved in foreign affairs.

NEVER thought I would say this about a Clinton:
She's LESS corrupt than all the other persons Mr. President-elect is appointing to his new cabinet! Just about every one of them so far, was involved in major corruption in their previous jobs! Yeah, right "change we an believe in".
He forgot to mention that he only meant he would leave us CHANGE in our paychecks, after all the deductions!

I think Hilary would have made a darn good president and since her and Obama are on the same side she should have been vice president and that would have been a great team but definately she would be an asset to Obama and should be the secretary of state
Posted by: richard | Nov 15, 2008 3:05:52 AM
Absolutely NOT! She's catty and self serving. She'd NOT make a good Secretary of State!
Posted by: Ron | Nov 15, 2008 3:13:23 AM
Yes! She would be a great Secretary of State

The question is misleading. Obama has already decided this. It's up to Hillary Clinton to accept. She has international clout and a husband who is still revered around the world. Furthermore, she's tough as nails. Great choice for a realist. Excellent choice for human rights advocates. Women would have no better voice than Hillary Clinton who has championed women's rights on the international stage. Her history with child advocacy would make her a great fit for issues that are largely missing from global concerns--child exploitation and organ trafficking. She would be bored going back to the Senate after showing everyone that she's a fierce debater and a congenial reconciler. She must accept the offer or regret the lost opportunity to make a significant contribution in this alternative way.

Yes to Clinton. The reasons are well stated by everyone else. And on the person claiming she is "too centrist" that is good. The SecState is responsible for meeting with ambassaders and foreign heads of state and stuff. It needs to be someone able to be accepted by both conservative and liberal countries. She is also well known by these people and since foreign relations were relatively good during the Clinton years, I don't think her "baggage" is a problem either. What is better change than a female in ANY of the top 5 positions? A woman with a brain, that is, not Palin.

Hillary is the exact correct person to become Sec. of State; and a part of the new inner circle.
