Closing Arguments: Burris and the Senate Seat

January 05, 2009 11:54 PM

Abc_roland_burris_02_090105_mn_5 There may be some awkward moments when the new Senate is sworn in tomorrow -- mostly due to the controversy surrounding Roland Burris, the Democrat embattled Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich picked to fill Barack Obama's seat.

Burris arrived at BWI airport today determined to assume his new post in Washington -- even as he is blocked from the Senate floor and veteran lawmakers said he will not be seated.

So tonight, we ask you: Should Roland Burris be seated as the rightful senator from Illinois?

Tell us what you think.

I would love to have seen Valerie Plame in this position.

No Burris should not be setted tomorrow...

NO! Absolutely not! Our disgraced governor should not have the power to appoint anyone!

Mr. Burris should not be seated. A new senator should be selected AFTER the investigation is completed and a determination made as to whether the governor committed a crime. If so, the Lt. Governor should make the selection

Of course not! What planet is Burris from? Where the heck is common sense? He's not allowed to sit in the Senate seat. Stop being a bully or exhibitionist. Do it the right way and COOPERATE!!!!

Legal governor (even though he is a Democrat crook!).
Legal appointment.
Legal procedure followed.
YES! Seat him! Unless you are an advocate of illegally barring an African-American, Harry Reid!

Despite the apparent legality of this appointment, it is extremely inappropriate for the Senate to seat Burris. There are too many unanswered questions concerning the Illinois Governor, and assuming his upcoming impeachment, allowing his senator to be seated would be a slap in the face to Illinoisans.

No, he should not be seated. Anyone named to the position by Blogo is tainted under these circumstances.

Yes, I think that Roland Burris should be seated as the senator from Illinois. The governor exercised the legal authority to make the appointment. He still holds the position as governor. Furthermore, the governore has approved a special election for Rahm Emmanuel's congressional seat and this action was approved by the Illinois Secretary of State. So, why not approve the action to appoint Roland Burris? He's more than qualified to hold the position as US Senator.

Burris may have found a legal opening to challenge for the senate seat but, he should not be there pressing the issue and creating a disharmonious environment even before Obama has been sworn in.

No, Mr. Burris should definately NOT be seated in the Senate on Tuesday. He is an opportunist who was unable to be elected to any major office so he simply saw this as his last chance..but, to take an appointment from our crooked governor????? He has destroyed his reputation and to have allowed the race card to be thrown into the mix besides is simply deplorable!

I think Burris should not be seated tomorrow because Jessie White did not signed the document. Besides, Burris is using the public money to travel to Washington, DC. Something that is completely wrong.

NO, Burris will just be another squatter in Washington.

Posted by: Melba | Jan 6, 2009 12:12:25 AM

No Mr. Burris should not be seated in Senate. Gov Rod had no business placing this man and Mr Burris is being used. I believe he is a very nice man but his placement is a move on Rods part to thumb his nose at the people of Illinois. I'm sorry Mr. Burris, but No

Burris should not be seated.

I am from Illinois, and proud of our outgoing senator, go Barack! I would also be proud to call Roland Burris as our junior Senator from Illinois. He's earned it.

Polosi and Reid aren't from Illinois; they don't have a say in who represents that state; it's the typical WAH-WAH-WAH attitude of Democrats in congress. They have more important things to do than squabble about this and that they are concerned about the "tainted image" this appointment brings is LAUGHABLE.

Blagojevich has lost all credibility. He should have his due process, but the evidence exposed thus far seems convincing. How can he explain away his recorded conversation? He is arrogant and appears guilty. Burris was picked by Blagojevich for all the wrong reasons. He should not be seated. An election should be held and he can run for the seat. If elected so be it. It appears congress is taking the right stand on this one.

Posted by: MIke | Jan 6, 2009 12:15:52 AM

YES - the governor is still the governor and has the right to make this appointment, until and unless he is impeached.

Posted by: AA | Jan 6, 2009 12:16:03 AM

It's Illinois's seat. The appointment is valid under Illinois law. Burris is qualfied. The Senate has no legitimate constitutional basis to deny seating Burris. I don't understand what business Harry Reid has "negotiating" the IL seat. Either the appointment is valid or it's invalid - that is a matter of IL law and Harry Reid has no authority on that point.
