Closing Arguments: Rank Obama's Predecessors

January 07, 2009 11:45 PM

Nm_presidents_club_090107_mnThe four living U.S. presidents -- George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Jimmy Carter -- met for lunch today at the White House with President-elect Barack Obama.

It was a historic gathering just 13 days before the inauguration.

So tonight, we ask you to rank President-elect Obama's predecessors.

Who was the best? Who was the worst?

Tell us what you think.

Ranking the previous (or soon to be "previous") Presidents:
1. Bill Clinton
2. George H.W. Bush
3. Jimmy Carter
4. George W. Bush

However... the legacy of these four men seem more to be tied to what they do once out of office rather than what they did while President. Nobel-prize-winning Jimmy Carter ranks first in my mind as a former president for his work helping to encourage good government throughout the world and for his commitment to organizations like Habitat for Humanity. Bill Clinton's commitment to AIDS treatment and disease eradication worldwide makes him a close second. The older Bush, although not as active, has also joined in supporting worthy causes, most notably Katrina relief; he places third in my mind.

What will George W do as a former president? I haven't heard any plans from him about this sort of "world building". Maybe in time we'll see him involved in the sort of work the other three former presidents have been involved with, but right now his lack of plans puts him dead last in my opinion.

I think that barrack obama will be a great president as for the ranking of the presidents to me itwill be: 1)Jimmy Carter 2)George Bush Sr 3)Bill Clinton 4)George Bush Jr can't rank Barrick Obama he hasn't started his presidency yet but I hope he can do something for not only the present veterans but the past veterans all us old veterans realize we have been forgotton. What upsets me is that the American people seem to forget why they have the freedom they have all they know is that they have their tv's, cars, houses and remote controls but American people need to ask themselves why they have can enjoy great things in life.

1 Bill Clinton
2.George H W Bush
3 Jimmy Carter
4 George W. Bush

I agree with the majority of historians who rank George W. Bush as the Worst President in History
Started with a surplus, ended with a historic defict
Started a war in Irag costing a 3/4 Trillion dollors
Over 500,000 innocent Iraqs killed
Because of foreigh policy, U S losses prestige throughout the world
Constitutional Rights lost via Patriot Act.
Worst Economic Crises since Great Depression
Has created greatest wealth desparity via tax cuts for the rich and deregulaton of business.

My comment on the tragic situation in Gaza. I think that the country of Isreal should stop the bombings and use the ground forces to go into gaza and take care of hamas. I feel with the ground forces there will be minimal lose of civilian life. It is the children that really upset me dearly. These poor children do not realize what is going on and don't understand but are getting killed because of a no good low life terroist hamas. Just one comment to hamas fight like men only kids hide behind women and children. Please leave the poor children alone.

Having lived through the presidencies of each of these gentlemen, my ratings are based on the job that they did as president, not on revisionism or work they did as ex-presidents.
1. Bill Clinton (you can't argue with unprecedented peace and prosperity and solving the problems as they came up);
2. George H.W. Bush (pragmatic problem solver, coalition builder, superb job on Gulf War I and foreign policy but lacking full grasp of economic and social ills);
3.Jimmy Carter, (a failed president, who still did some good things, 1978 Egypt/Israel treaty etc., but out-of-his-league - anti-Vietnam, anti-Watergate president who may not have lied to us but failed to protect us); and
4. George W. Bush (a missionary zealot without a clue who aggressively took the country way off track and didn't even consult with his father on foreign policy- a total disaster).

# 1 is George W. Bush. Given all the body of work he had to handle during his presidency the act of War , acts of God, 8 years of none stop catastrophes. He lead us well and shall be missed! #2 Jimmy Carter great humanitarian #3 George H. W. Bush . President Clinton would not be on my list as a great president, probably fun at a dinner party but as leader not impressed.

1. George H.W. Bush
2. Bill Clinton
3. Jimmy Carter
4. George W. Bush

Although well-intended, was not a LEADER.
But G.W. was such a flop, that he made even Carter look like Napolean.

Clinton the best, Carter the worst since his mid-east policy brought us to where we are 2day

Posted by: Franko | Jan 8, 2009 3:10:05 AM

Bill Clinton was by far the best and no doubt there will be little argument that "W" was/is/ will be the worst President in US History. Who falls in between the two matters little. Our guy Obama has a really tough job ahead of him and I think he is the only one in the line up that can begin to tackle the mess W leaves.
