NighTline Faceoff: Obama's Speech in Cairo

June 10, 2009 11:13 AM

Obama's speech at Cairo University last week has been discussed, debated, lauded and dismissed.  Did he make strides in bridging the West and the Muslim world, or no?  Was the speech an overwhelming success or a massive flop.  Today at 12:30pm, "NighTline" invites you to join in on the debate for a NighTline Faceoff: Obama’s Speech in Cairo.  Did it work?

Our first panelist is Fawaz Gerges, a Christian A. Johnson Chairholder in Middle Eastern Studies and International Affairs at Sarah Lawrence College.  Gerges thinks Obama's speech was a success, and believes that it was the most strategic move by the U.S. Since 9/11.  He admits that his efforts are just the beginning of a long journey, but that his speech planted an important seed. Mr. Gerges will join us in New York.

On the other side of the issue is Jed Babbin, Editor of Human Events, a weekly conservative magazine.  He believes that Obama's speech was apologetic, and said that it isolated Israel.

So who do you agree with?  Start tweeting your thoughts now, and join the debate this afternoon. The Face-off airs LIVE at 12:30pm E.D.T. and can also be watched live at the Nightline page at ABCnews.com.

Obama's speech was well written and well presented. However, he is just continually demonstrating weakness and apology to the world. Just look at Iran. Just look at North Korea. Now he gives Miranda Rights to terrorists. He is going to get a lot of Americans and especially our soldiers killed because of his international policy.

If he will not protect their lives with his policies, then he just needs to bring everyone home.

Obama's speech in Eygpt:
An excellent speech from a closet muslim!
As far as terrorist go, let all Gitmo prisoners be released to the demorats who voted to close it...I'm sure their wives and daughters will be thrilled to have these wonderful sub-humans home with them.

President Obama's speech was far reaching for today and for tommorrow. What he conveyed and what I personally believe moved Iran to "act" on a rigged election was the idea of a free society and the personal cost of that society. He empowers the people to be bold and seek for this common thread we at home call freedom. Think for a moment. If he were to call on the US military to go and fight for this freedom in Iran like we supposedly fought for it in Iraq. How much more proud a soldier would go and fight. Knowing the people really did welcome a chance to be free. Unlike the false pretenses of the Iraq war.
