'Nightline' Exclusive: Firsthand Account of Fort Hood Shooting

November 06, 2009 6:17 PM

Terry Moran will be live at Fort Hood, Texas again tonight with the latest on the tragic shooting at the military base. Throughout the day, Terry has interviewed several people to piece together what happened yesterday during the shooting.

Included among them is a Sgt. Andrew Hagerman, a Fort Hood military policeman -- who gave a stunning first-hand account of the scene.

"There were multiple people wounded that soldiers were treating," Hagerman said. "If it wasnt for those soldiers who came over, even with the thought of there was someone still shooting and stuff like that, to treat these people, to come out of other buldings and treat, there would have been a lot more losses."

"They saved countless lives yesterday by what they did."

You can see Terry's complete report tonight on "Nightline" at 11:35 p.m. We will also have new details about the alleged gunman, Major Nadil Salik Hasan, and the civilian police officer, Kimberly Munley, who exchanged gunfire with Hasan to help end the attack; as well as information about the victims.

My most heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the families who lost loved ones in the Fort Hood Incident, may god be with these families in their time of loss and give them strength to carry on. I have no words to express my sadness at their loss and to the loss to our Nation. Truly some of our "FINEST"...

At the same time this is not the first incident of this kind which has befallen our military. It only underscores the fact that there needs to be further investigation by the Military and the V.A. into the root causes of such disasters. There seems to be a common thread which runs through such actions and needs to be defined as to the cause. In the present climate of the type of wars we are fighting, there seems to be some deep seated psychological problems which seem to be overlooked within our returning troops. We can only hope that the military can shed some light on these problems and do their best to address this issue.

Once again I offer my warmest thoughts and prayers to the families of the lost and wounded, and my sincere thanks to the Heroes who brought this incident to a swift conclusion. My best wishes to the wounded soldiers and to Kimberly Munley for a swift and complete recovery. God bless our nation and those who protect it....WE ARE DIMINISHED...SEMPER-FI

Do you remember what what said by Lou near the end of the movie, "Wall Street"? When reporting news, reporters and editors should look into the abyss. Lou gave very good advice.
