Meet Kate Adamson - Klugman -- She Survived a Major Stroke to Inspire Others

So what is the picture of health? How about alive instead of dead!
In 1995, I was a fit and healthy mother of two. I had an ideal diet: no processed sugar, low fat organic foods, whole grains, lots of veggies and fruit. I was 5" 3"-- weighed 116 lbs with a body fat ratio of 12%. I worked out five days a week. If you wanted to see a healthy lifestyle, all you had to do was follow me around.
At the age of 33, I suffered a brainstem stroke that left me totally paralyzed. Many debated whether my life was worth the cost of life support. The odds were a million to one against me; but because I had done the work I had a fighting chance to survive. Because of my health and fitness, resulting from proper diet and exercise, the willpower I developed in the process "and God's grace" I survived.
Today I am still the picture of health. It may be a slightly different picture than you're used to because I'm still partially paralyzed, but I enjoy the most significant recovery of anyone who has suffered this type of paralysis. I still watch my diet and exercise regularly. I still weigh 116 lbs. My body fat ratio is only slightly increased (hey, I'm ten years older). It is great being alive! How much does being the picture of health mean to me? It saved my life.

Kate gets my vote. I am a BRAIN-STEM STROKE SURVIVOR also. I had my stroke March 7,2003. I was 50 years and 4 months old. I was a LPN in a pediatics office for 11 years. I just became single. The stroke has changed or took away my dreams. I having a hard time dreaming new dreams[setting new goals].Please e-mail me back. You are the first person I have had any similar circumstances. Thank You, Toni

Katie has inspired a lot of us stroke survivors nationwide. She gets my vote.
Aside to the GMA producers: I think it is horribly crass of you to air a Slimfast commercial in place of the promised video about Kate & I think it in very bad taste of you to include that with a stroke survivor's story. Rather than fret about their weight, many stroke survivors would just be thankful if they could eat normally. This is no reflection on Katie- just my comments to you TV folk.

I think your story is amazing. Please continue by the grace of God. To do all that he has for you to do here on this earth. Continue to look to him and he will give you strength.

Kate gets my vote. Her story is motivating to a fellow stroke survivor. The stroke I incurred was different than hers; however, we all have challenges to overcome - and to be the best "new me" we can be.
I also agree with the comments made by
Toni to the producers regarding the slimfast video.
Best of luck Kate!!

Kate gets my vote. I am also a stroke survivor. Recovery and progress is very hard work, and slow. It requires amazing patience and energy.

Kate, You were the first person I met at church when I first moved to So. Calif.
I remember those early days of you in the ICU at Torrance Memorial. I remember waking up in the early mornings and seeing the marquee of the hospital from my bedroom window, and praying for your survival, let alone your recovery.
You have been an inspiration in many ways...and especially when I was told either lose weight or have a stroke because my blood pressure was high. I chose to lose weight, having seen what YOU had to endure once you had the stroke.
I am constantly encouraged by your tenacity to make lemonade out of the lemons your life finds. You are quite a rolemodel. Congrats, Kate. Blessings on you and your family.

Kate,
Your story is a courageous journey. My aunt had a stroke and has some paralysis. She made it through too, by the grace of God. Oh goodness the people your story will touch. Peace be with you always.

like Kate I had a stroke and we became friends through an online stroke support group. Her example of determination encouraged me to pursue a healthy lifestyle. I truly believe that much of Kate's recovery was due to the health she created before her stroke. Prevention is definitely a better way to approach a great picture of health for everyone. If you enjoy your life like Kate does it pays off to put good health habits as a priority no matter what one's age. I hope she wins. She is an inspiration.

Kate gets my vote. Follwing an angiogram to locate a large aneurysm involving several arteries I HAD A BRAINSTEM STROKE W/ an emboli shower -
multiple hits to cerebellum and pons on brainstem. Most signifigant damage found on pons..."Prime Real Estate".
I was a 58 year old, working, very active woman. I learned of Kate's book
early on in a magazine and was not going to be satisfied until I had a copy of "Kate's Journey". My husband bought me a copy. I found her book to be very inspiring and motivating. I was in pretty good physycal shape when I suffered the stroke and all of my medical team have said that and my positive attitude has brought me to the point I am now. I also think my faith in the good Lord and prayer have a lot to do with my miraculous recovery. Even though I don't know her personally, Kate
is and has been my role model.

Kate has been inspirational to me after reading her book and her personal battle with a severe stroke as I have had. A stroke is a life changing event that leaves many with paralysis for life.
I've come a long way in recovery reading and knowing about Kate and others who has led the way in knowledge about strokes and recovery like the organization strokenetwork Many survivors state how blessed they feel to have found such an informational network about strokes.

Kate spoke at a seminar on strokes today in Oklahoma City. Her story is an inspiration for those who have had strokes, with resulting impairments, and for those who love and care for such persons. Kate is a "trophy wife" in all the splendor that term suggests and she is a wonder for the remarkable recovery she has made. Having met Kate today and listened to her story, I had to cast my vote for her, although the other contenders are all worthy of recognition for their accomplishments.

Kate is one of my regular shoppers at my grocery store that I work at. I didn't learn of her full story after many years of knowing her. Just recently I read her book "Paralyzed but not Powerless" and I have to say I look at her in a completely different light than I had over these last years I've known her. She is a VERY inspirational person and I feel I am very lucky to know her personally. I want to fisnih with the words of Kate herself..."Be Empowered" those two words hold so much weight for me and I truly will live my life with that intent.

I so happy for Kate. My Mom - who was so full of life and vigor suffered a stroke a year and a half ago. Unfortunately she died at my side after 2 months. I was heartbroken. I wish she was with me today.....God blessed you Kate! I wish you all of the best in your life.
I have Remitting Relapse Multiple Sclerosis - and how right you are when you say to live each day the best you can.
Very fondly,
Susie.
