No Two Are the Same

July 19, 2006 1:13 PM

Along with his explanation for his veto of the embryonic stem cell funding bill, the President will today speak about so-called "snowflake babies"...

These are children adopted as frozen embryos from the fertility clinics where they were un-used.

Hundreds of thousands of un-used embryos exist, and thousands are destroyed each month, disposed as medical waste.

About the snowflake babies, we're told that: "The Snowflakes Frozen Embryo Adoption Program, run by Nightlight Christian Adoptions, helps connect biological parents with adoptive parents and guides both parties through the adoption process with medical, legal, psychological, administrative, and, practical assistance. The group has matched over 273 genetic families with approximately 178 adoptive families, resulting in the birth of 110 children to date and about 20 more children due between now and February 2007."

Unless I'm mistaken, that would seem to imply that 143 embryos died in the process of these snowflake adoptions.

This is a serious question: were any sort of memorial services held? I've asked the White House and will let you know what they say.

I think you all failed to understand a very basic point that was being made with the "Snowflake babies." Because these embryos are being adopted, they are not being killed or discarded as they otherwise would be. The fact that when implanted into the uterous these embryos grow into a child is living proof that these embryos are living humans -- just not yet developed yet. Those working with Snowflake adoption are not doing so to make money, but because they are concerned that these living, human embryos be given the chance at life -- something supporters of embryonic stem cell research are hoping and wanting to deny them.

I think you would feel differently about Snowflake adoption if you had begun your life as a human embryo at an IVF clinic that would have otherwise been killed were your adoptive parents not willing to grow you into the child you should have always been destined to become.

I think it's more easily understood if you follow the money. Tony Snow said in his news conference that the President was not trying to stop stem cell research, just federal funding, and that people are free to invest in private efforts to continue such research.
The depth of the administration's concern seems to be wallet related. If it's murder, as Snow's other comment to the effect that the President believes it is murder. then why would Mr. Snow encourage investment in research concerns that perform such murders?
Once again with this administration it's about lining the pockets of investors. Medical procedures developed and funded by the government are eminent domain that potentially benefit even those citizens who can't afford to make investments in drug companies. By denying government funding the results will be patented by an investment driven, tax cut benefitted drug companies. They'll make obscene profits charging out the wazoo for the developed medicines and procedures. That will come right after the congress prevents medicare and medicaid from negotiating lower prices for them.
While drug companies empty the treasury of working class taxpayer dollars don't expect the "for profit" news media in this to be actively pointing any of this out. News reporting and analysis in this nation amount to repeating whatever it is this administration says is, is.

I agree with Chuck and Jack. If the issues go away they don't have jobs. The morning after pill is another example. It keeps conception from happenning at all, but that would eliminate the need for most abortions and eliminate the jobs of all these pro-life organizations.

It would be nice if the pro-lifer's devoted time to the type of people Chuck mentioned in his comments.

Does the adoption process for the "snowflake babies" finally mean that there are no more orphans, abused children, abandoned children, or other children without families left to adopt? Perhaps I missed the news item that children who have already been born and who need families have all been adopted by understanding, worthy families. Could someone please direct me to the news report about this?

As long as I live, I will NEVER understand the higher value placed on the lives of fetuses by the "pro-life" movement as compared to the lives of those children who have already been born and who desperately need a family. It would seem to me that, at least as long as the "pro-life" people are concerned, fetuses are only important until they're born. After that, if their families are poor, ripped asunder, or abusive, they can be dealt with by the ill-equipped government bureaucracies designed to do so. It seems that "pro-life" means only "pro-life" until birth.

In any case, it will be extremely interesting to hear the White House response to your question, Jake.
