THE NED LAMONT HALL OF STARS
July 17, 2006 9:02 PM
Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, may not be clear where
she stands on Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn. -- having signaled she won't
endorse him if he loses his August Democratic primary and runs for the
Senate as an independent (or, rather, as a member of the "Connecticut
for Lieberman" party).
But her husband sure has his thoughts, and they seem rather pro-Lieb.
The FORMER PRESIDENT SAID
at the Aspen Institute that Democrats shouldn't be fighting amongst
themselves on Iraq. "If we allow our differences over what to do now
in Iraq to divide us instead of focusing on replacing Republicans in
Congress; that's the nuttiest strategy I ever heard in my life,"
Clinton said, mentioning that Lieberman had been endorsed by
environmental groups, labor unions, and gay and lesbian rights groups.
"We've got a world of differences between ourselves and the Republicans," Clinton offered. "So I think the Democrats are making a mistake to go after each other ... for a situation none of them created."
Lieberman challenger Ned Lamont has some high-profile supporters of his own.
It turns out that Ned Lamont is hardly the only one funding his campaign.....According to Lamont's campaign, financier George Soros donated $1,000.
Singer/director/actress/diva Barbra Streisand has also given Mr. Lamont $1,000.
Jackson Browne, making sure Lamont won't be "running on empty," gave $500.
"Hud" star Paul Newman -- who is actually a Nutmeg State resident -- gave $2,100.
A whopping $250 came from ALEXANDRA PAUL who you may know as Lt. Stephanie Holden on the TV show "Baywatch."
Richard Donner -- director of the 1978 film "Superman" as well as the "Lethal Weapon" flicks -- contributed $2,000.
...and then there's Maude!!
Which is to say legendary 1970s TV producer Norman Lear also gave $1,000.
Lamont has given himself $1.1 million. Which is most
of the $1.9 million he's raised in spent in the last couple months.
Lieberman raised $1.3 million during that same time.

So, Bill Clinton, We Democrats should unite by going the way Liberman wants to go? Why not unite by going the way most of us honest Liberals want to go, like with John Murtha?
The label (gutless) that the Far Right put on us Democrats seems like the only thing they have gotten right. I have worked very hard for what I thought we were about, but most of our Democratic leaders are only about getting re-elected. I am sick of the gutless bunch.

Clinton is incorrect when he says "So I think the Democrats are making a mistake to go after each other ... for a situation none of them created." As an early supporter of this debacle in Iraq, Lieberman, in fact, did help "create" the situation. What better cover for a sitting President than to be able to point to a "leader" in the opposing party as a supporter of his position?
As to whether Democrats with differing positions on important issues should be fighting amongst themselves, it's called democracy. The Democrats of Connecticut will have their say. They will decide the importance of Lieberman's Iraq position and some of his other Republican-light stances. I, for one, will be pulling for Lamont. See you on K Street, Joe!

Jake, I think that you were absolutely right in your prior assessment of how much animosity Lieberman generates among Dems. It will be VERY interesting to see how this drama plays out. As for Bill's pronouncements, keep in mind that he was the one who thought Wesley Clark was the future of the Democratic Party, and look how that turned out!

Bill Clinton should confine himself to earning millions of dollars in speaking gigs and apologizing for being a millionaire severals times over. He and his wife hopefully are what the past of the Democratic party is, not its furure.
