9/11: Whom to blame?
September 08, 2006 4:59 PM
First off, the ones responsible for the 9/11 attacks are the ones responsible -- the terrorists.
Call them Al Qaeda, call them Islamo-fascists, call them what you will -- they killed thousands of innocent Americans.
They did it. Not President Clinton, not President Bush. Not George Tenet nor Richard Clarke.
Some have suggested that perhaps the most important action any of us can take as the 5th anniversary of that horrible day approaches is to read the actual 9/11 Commission Report.
You can find the Executive Summary HERE ... or a PDF version of the complete report is HERE.... Or you can just log onto the 9/11 Commission's website HERE and find it all online.
The bottom line, according to the report: both the Clinton and the Bush Administrations failed to adequately protect the U.S. that day.
Regardless of your partisan inclinations, that's what the report concludes.
It says: "both Presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush and their top advisers told us they got the picture-they understood Bin Ladin was a danger. But given the character and pace of their policy efforts, we do not believe they fully understood just how many people al Qaeda might kill, and how soon it might do it. At some level that is hard to define, we believe the threat had not yet become compelling."
Therefore, the report surmises, to invade Afghanistan to take out Al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden was not even considered -- by either administration -- before 9/11.
"Officials in both the Clinton and Bush administrations regarded a full U.S. invasion of Afghanistan as practically inconceivable before 9/11," the report says. "It was never the subject of formal interagency deliberation….Since we believe that both President Clinton and President Bush were genuinely concerned about the danger posed by al Qaeda, approaches involving more direct intervention against the sanctuary in Afghanistan apparently must have seemed-if they were considered at all-to be disproportionate to the threat."
Much of this, the report concludes, is the fault of the aides to the two Presidents. "Looking back, we are struck with the narrow and unimaginative menu of options for action offered to both President Clinton and President Bush."
As for the mini-series scheduled to air this Sunday, while ABC News is part of the ABC Television Network, it is separate and distinct from ABC Entertainment. We do not have say in what they put on as a docu-drama, just as they do not tell us what to put in our newscasts. Those of you who end up liking "The Path to 9/11" should not give ABC News credit for it; those of you who have issues with it should not ascribe ABC News blame.
More importantly, whatever your political leanings, you have the right to expect that your government will do everything it can to keep you safe.
If you're a fan of the 9/11 Commission, I might suggest that your energy could perhaps be well channeled by trying to get our political leaders to carry out the recommendations of that Commission, which have not been fully implemented.
That, it would seem to me, might be a more constructive (at least in the long-term) use of time as opposed to focusing on one TV show -- either in trying to get scenes edited, or in insisting that they remain untouched. I understand both sides of the debate, and I don't take either lightly, but I wonder -- what would bin Laden prefer us to focus on? A TV show, or improving this country's defenses? It need not be an either/or, but there are in fact only so many minutes in the day.
Have a good weekend -- and stay safe.

Definetly blame Islam for the 911-attacks..But see Terrorism for what it really is..the FACTS are all about Justice..the world has handed crime a daily NOTICE to evict the premises..along the way the crimminals have gone to lengths to sell drugs and hamper the family w/prostitution..taking on personalites that eventually went so far as to include ID-fraud useing technology..When technology finally came up and bit their head off also..they realized that the END was Not only Near..but days ago..even years past they just turned themselves inside-out to be Black Marketeers and drug Dealing Money Grubbers..SOOoo..who to blame for 911/??/I would blame the past for concealing the truth about itself..lieing too itself about Life and God..all the time saying that Subversion was not Subversion but some sort of intellectualism..I think that the need to have the TRUTH was the WHY..there seemed no Military response to the Hi-jackers of that day..there has been a fight around the world over the issue of hi-jacking Planes/most times the reasoning was some Psycho was looking for his personality w/a Bomb..I agree with the President in his fight against Terrorism..because his fight against all other crimes has led him to this spot..The reality of innocent death was to be the definite Author of democracy as Islam needs its day in court(once again)..Democracy is the Cure for Terrorism..NOT..some ambluant SENSE of one best interests/facets vs. facts/and the detractors can be said to NOT HAVE the STOMACH for democracy.

Thank you for putting together the productions on the 10th and 11th of September. I think that your show as well as the PBS special "The Man Who Knew" show what the real problem was in regards to stopping 9 11 before it happened. People in decision making positions either with ego's that got in the way to such an extent that they were blinded to what was obvious (like the guy that wouldn't even advise the Airlines of the impending attack). And then there where those in the Government positions who were so afraid to make a decision without first getting a pole from how it might affect them personally if everything didn't go just right. (Like the line from the "Prince", Do you have any Men in the US Government). To me it's clear that it's not a republican or democratic problem but a beurocratic, procedural problem. The good news is that I have a solution. It's called the Quality Movement started shortly after WWII in Japan by an American. It forces brainstorming as well as making others listen (playing nice). Why don't we give it a try!

If I go scuba diving and don't wear the appropriate breathing equipment and then drown do I blame the water? There are people who want to kill americans. We need people in charge of keeping americans safe doing their jobs. If you failed to take action to eliminate a clear threat then that is your legacy.

I find many people here are just assuming the accounts are falsehoods. No one has yet put forth proof as to what is actually a lie.
If one views this as a true "Docudrama" then lets take in consideration the ultimate principle of the movie and apply it to the call for action the movie is causing for both sides of the political spectrum.
THe ultimate principle of the movie is in the pressure between allowing law govern causing negative or undesirable consequences one is to override the law by doing what is right.
Examples: the judge who wants to execute Remzi. The agent who wants to kill Bin Laden. The failure of the CIA along with the Whitehouse to respond effectively in capturing Bin Laden (wether true or false). The informants who risk their lives to turn in the bad guys.
ON and ON the list can go as to the principle of the movie.
The underlying current of the movie is found in the disension of American politics versus the Unity of the Islamo-facists. We argue to find the right choice based on judgments and opinions, while the terrorists are agreed on ONE point and are more effective considering their limited resources than an "All powerful" world dominator of America.
The message is to UNITE for PROTECTION. It is not about politics, but actually against the politics on both sides OVERALL!
When will we learn not to cowards and stand up for what is right and decent - specifically - the protection of innocent people - our own families.
Seems to the security panel was making decisions about innocent lives only as an excuse and fear of a negative public opinion.
I enjoyed the movie and encouraged me to be more helpful in the way I can be. I was utterly appalled at the way terrorists are KILLERS! The political views are produced to show the comparison between a system of relative values, and the solidarity of fundamentalist values.
We will ever come up with enough HUMBLENESS not to look to ourselves as the ultimate opinion of what is RIGHT and WRONG?
Adam and Eve had that problem - wanting to choose for themselves what THEY WANTED TO DO. The devil tempted them with becoming their own gods...guess that's what we like to do today. Heed the Warning.

This would not be an issue, had Western Governments in general, and the United States in particular, treated other nations fairly in every dealing, as we have PRETENDED to do...We are little Eichmanns...with our heads in the sand, and our leaders are no better than the Nazis that they rave about, so ironic when both of Bushes grandfathers were supporting Hitler financially from NY.

"The bottom line, according to the report: both the Clinton and the Bush Administrations failed to adequately protect the U.S. that day."
But unfortunately, that is not the picture painted by this film. According to reviews, while pointing an accusatory finger at Clinton, the picture anoints Bush with sainthood, which flies in the face of all known facts.
If you want to air the movie, why not follow it with at least a one hour (commercial free) discussion with some of the actual persons portrayed in the film, allowing them adequate time to refute the erroneous actions/comments ascribed to them in the film?
At least then you could claim some degree of fairness on this subject, because now you are merely an organ for a right wing group that has, quite frankly, put one over on you. Or, you are complicate in this distortion.
Which is it?

Whether the "Path to 9-11" is entertainment or history, ABC has an obligation to listen to the people who actually were there. If they say that the "fictionalized" scenes are untrue, then they should be changed. Otherwise ABC is committing slander.

WOW! IT IS SUPRISING TO SEE HOW MANY PEOPLE ABOVE HAVE SEEN THE MINI-SERIES ALREADY! I SURE FEEL LEFT OUT. I WOUILD LIKE TO MAKE SUCH OBJECTIVE OPINIONS ABOUT A PEICE OF WORK, BUT I HAVE YET TO SEE THE THING YET.

by the comments posted here it is obvious more amd more that the Dems have no "plan" other than to attack Bush. That is scary, as they want to lead this country. Quit the bashing and do what you are elected to do.

I see nothing very peculiar here. ABC will be providing the same level of documentary integrity it always does. This time, I suppose in fairness to those of us who do cherish truth and can remember five years back, ABC has admitted taking license with the facts. We should consider them "fair and balanced" along those lines, I suppose.

I think you are an arrogant fool to think that you are a good enough filmmaker for Bin Laden to get out of his hidey-hole to watch your stupid film. I am one of the countless millions who have vowed to never again watch ABC - ABC NEWS or any ABC product until they withdraw and apologize for this dreck. You are causing this network to jump the shark, the affiliates to fail to serve their communities, and by showing it during prime time, exposing children to traumatizing violence. I hope that many stations get fines because of your program. I know I will be writing the FCC demanding the permit to broadcast of my local station be revoked or at the very least a maximum fine be imposed. I hope stations across the country suffer the same fate. Either way I will not be watching ABC anymore.

Very simply, ABC exists as a single corporate entity. Yes there may be different divisions that have different duties but the final output is stamped with one giant company logo - ABC. If one division of the military commits a 'criminal act' shall we just say that they made up their own rules and absolve everyone else in command? You cannot present an account of something so fresh in our minds and pretend that many people will not consider the news arm of ABC as a supporting player. It comes down to a cheap shot for ratings and money and coming so close to an election it appears to be a very political Karl Rove move. My anger will translate to enjoying my own personal boycott of ABC shows and informing any sponsors of ABC shows that the boycott extends to their products. I will remove ABC from my remote selection guide so that it will not even appear for consideration.

As it turns out, "The Path to 9/11" is a covert project of an evangelical Christian group bent on 'taking back' Hollywood. Unbelieveable, but frighteningly true. The so-called innaccuracies are purposeful, the lies intentional. See Max Blumenthal's item at the Huffington Post. ABC should pull the program or face sanction for allowing the public airways to be used for a covert political agenda.

FREEDOM OF PRESS.......DONT TOUCH , U NEVER REDID THE MOORE MOVIE WITH ALL IT'S LIE'S , SO LET THE TRUTH BE TOLD. OR LET THE AMERICAN PEOPLE BE THE JUDGE. IF U REMAKE U WILL BE LETTING THE CRAZY GUY IN D.C. CONTROL U .

Jake,
Tsk. A real docu-drama would show that President Clinton held a terrorism meeting once a week and that President Bush held NO terrorism meetings but did take plenty of vacations while the terrorists were getting. How about a nice clip of the Bush 'character' clearing brush on the back 40 while the terrorists made plans?
This isn't even a good piece of drama. A real director, writer or producer would certainly have felt the need for a split screen of Bush sitting like a bump for seven minutes while the towers burned. We don't get that from this. We get political propaganda from right-wingers.
Report on David Cunningham and Cyrus Nowrasteh, director and writer of this trash. I'm reading things like "dedicated to a Godly transformation and revolution TO and THROUGH the Film and Television Industry." And I want some journalistic reporting.

You have made a valid point, in doing so you are suggesting that we / goveernment is doing everything that it can. I would like to suggest otherwise. I work with government workers, I see government workers and I know government workers. They are cussy job people who try harder to get out of effort than put any in. This is a generalization I know. However, at the same time I do not feel, based on my knowledge of government employees, safe and comfortable with their expertise in stopping the bad guy's. The other bad knock on these guys is that they deflect responsibility when the bad guys crap on the fan. Deflect is a motow to the government. Responsibility is something to deflect not something to take credit for.
Just thinking.

When is ABC going to come out with "The Path to Iraq" To bad we didn't stick around with a few more troops in Afghanistan. The following can act as the start for a script.
9/11 – An Attack Against Humanity
I read a very interesting note on meetings between Iran, China, and Russia at misneach blog a couple months ago. I wonder why I haven’t heard much about this anywhere else? The strategic value of developing closer relationships between theses countries is clear to see, for anyone who is paying attention.
China's rapid growth is fueling an insatiable appetite for Oil.
Russia is looking for any market to sell its products and services. Is Iran hiring? Have they posted any want ads for a nuclear scientist?
Both China and Russia are permanent members of the UN Security Council. Any UN sponsored sanctions against Iran will likely face a veto from one or both of these nations, based upon their own strategic reasons. What is America to do? The military option is unrealistic.
Today, America is over extended militarily and out of touch diplomatically. I am most saddened by the reckless disregard for diplomacy, civility, and sportsmanship the Bush Administration has displayed since 9/11/01. They have managed to pull defeat and division from the jaws of victory and cohesion in the real "war on terror." Just look at Afghanistan if you doubt this assertion.
The world mourned with us and for themselves after Sept. 11th. The attack on the World Trade Center was not only an attack upon America. It was an attack against all humanity. Citizens of far too many other countries died on 9/11 in NYC.
The other countries and thousands of families who lost loved ones at "ground zero" are fighting their own personal wars on terror everyday. Their lives have been changed forever. How dare we allow our "public servants" to exploit their sufferings to launch a preemptive war on Iraq, while not bringing Bin Laden to justice?

Comparing this to Farenheit 9-11 is silly. They have yet to come up with one fact that disputes F 9-11,yet ABC has admitted that this is made up! As for the so-called "CIA agent" that posted here and claimed Clinton blew 10 chances-you haven't read the report,i see.Odd that a "cia agent" didn't read it,and spouts Limbaugh-ese don't you think?
Posted by: anne | Sep 9, 2006 12:18:51 AM
I have a simple question, one that doesn't seem to be asked, and one that I have yet to hear a decent answer to:
9/11 was a horrific reality. ABC has called "The Path to 9/11" a docudrama. Other statements from ABC (and from the film-maker) explicitly state that there are "fictionalized" elements.
So my question: How is the memory of the people who died on 9/11 and the families who survived enhanced in *any* way by presenting anything less than 100% true and verified history? Is this the best ABC can do?
Oh, and yes, I know that ABC News wants to distance themselves from ABC Entertainment over this mess. Sorry, but you're both part of the same company, and I as a viewer see no reason to form any distinction between the two. While the people who work in the two divisions may make clear distinctions between themselves, I don't work for you. All I see is the same logo.

-----
Well, Mr. Tapper, I suggest this is worth my "energy". If you folks in the media would've done your job to begin with, we wouldn't be in Iraq. So why don't YOU spend YOUR energy doing what you're supposed to, instead of being an ABC apologist.
