Dancing With Tom DeLay
September 06, 2006 12:24 PM
David Chalian of the ABC News Political Unit brings to my attention the following letter from former Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas, who asks his political supporters to watch and vote for country music singer and GOP supporter Sara Evans on ABC's "Dancing with the Stars." Evans performed at the 2004 Republican National Convention, has supported GOP candidates, and DeLay writes that she "represents good American values in the media."
One Evans opponent on "Dancing with the Stars" will be Democrat/liberal Jerry Springer. DeLay makes it clear he wants to help Sara Evans defeat him.
My personal favorite contestant is my pal Tucker Carlson of MSNBC, but clearly Mr. DeLay's allegiance is elsewhere.
Following is the 100% legitimate letter from DeLay:
"Dear Friend,
"I am writing to you today in an effort to help a good friend of mine, country music singer and GOP supporter Sara Evans. Sara will be competing this year on ABC’s smash hit "Dancing with the Stars" beginning Tuesday, September 12, at 8 pm Eastern/ 7pm Central. Sara has recently launched a new website www.DancingWithSara.com that will connect her fans to exclusive behind the scenes material from the show. Register with this website for free today and then watch Sara compete starting September 12 – and don’t forget that YOUR VOTE HELPS DETERMINE THE WINNER!
"Sara Evans has been a strong supporter of the Republican Party and represents good American values in the media. From singing at the 2004 Republican Convention to appearing with candidates in the last several election cycles, we have always been able to count on Sara for her support of the things we all believe in. Let’s show Sara that same support by watching and voting for her each week to help her win this competition. One of her opponents on the show is ultra liberal talk show host Jerry Springer. We need to send a message to Hollywood and the media that smut has no place on television by supporting good people like Sara Evans.
"Sara will be a great representative of the values that we want to see in the media and we should all support her to keep her on the show as long as possible. Register today with www.DancingWithSara.com for complete access to Sara on "Dancing with the Stars" and then watch her starting September 12. Remember, your votes will help determine the winner so be sure to tune in and vote each week.
"Sincerely,
"Tom DeLay "

well, this is really disappointing. I have been sending all my votes to because I think Tony is the best dancer and want to make sure he stays in the competition. I didnt realize I was voting Republican. Thanks for making me aware of the politial ramifications of my vote.

I find the man smart. Vote for Sara.

Unbelievable. I am a little nervous that the people who get the letter will stay glued to their sets and vote for Sara because Tom Delay also told them that Saddam bombed the Pentagon, and the ultra liberal Jerry Springer is a fascist terrorist who is still sleeping with Monica Lewinsky.

If Bush wasn't responsible, why is the media flooding the nation with these stupid 9/11 movies so soon after the actual event. Pa-lease! Buildings don't collapse so perfectly because of fire. It was demolition teams. I can't believe the garbage the media is flood these days. Nothing but lies.

While, yes, this is a silly little story, doesn't this seem part of the M.O. of the current DeLayesque Republicans? DeLay is asking his political supporters to vote for Ms. Evans because she's Republican, not because of her achievements. How she might actually dance is, to DeLay, irrelevant. Tell me that doesn't sound like the perfect metaphor for the Republicans running for re-election, saying, "We haven't done much and the things we did do were foolish, but we're not Democrats."

Tom Delay is an idiot and I will watch dancing with the stars and vote for everyone but Sara evans. I am going to vote for Tucker because he is cute and deep down I know that he hearts gay people and women’s rights.

Even just a few months out of office, this man still has no sense of shame! Imagine attempting to coordinate poliotical votes for the next edition of "Dancing With the Stars!" Will he try to rig the voting on "American Idol" next? Once a power-mad despot, always a power-mad despot.

Delay seriously must have started with a form letter that he used for a get out the vote campaign, and substituted "dancing with the stars" for whatever public office was at stake. I knew he was crooked but I'm stunned by his lack of originality. Write a new form letter buddy. Dancing with the Stars isn't public service. What a bonehead.

Funny thing is, you can't ask "Doesn't Delay have anything better to do with his time?" Because he doesn't.
