"The path to The Path to 9/11," part 2
September 08, 2006 8:55 AM
Well, we did the spot on World News with Charles Gibson last night, and for the World News Webcast (VIDEO HERE) and a separate spot on Good Morning America this a.m....
The crux of the debate is that there are events in the film that didn't actually happen, that reflect poorly on some Clinton Admnistration senior aides -- National Security Adviser Sandy Berger, and Secretary of State Madelaine Albright, most notably. The whole film is still being edited and the scenes in question may be tweaked...perhaps.
9/11 Commissioner John Lehman had some interesting takes on the controversy. "The larger truth," he told us, "is that neither administration fully grasped what the threat was. Partially it was inadequate intelligence but you can't blame it all on the inadequate intelligence -- there was, I think, a very naïve view held by some in the
Clinton administration, mainly Albright and Janet Reno that force was counterproductive."
Lehman, a Republican, told us that the campaign against the film by the Clinton officials misses the point. "I think what they're trying to do is to take the fact the specific scenes portrayed were fictional and to try to refute the underlying reality that the Clinton administration just didn't get it. And by the way before 9-11 neither did the Bush administration."
"I believe that these kinds of docu-dramas are important and valuable as long as they make it clear that there is a fictionalization of the underlying truth, but the truth's basic reality is there."
On the other hand, 9/11 Commissioner Richard Ben-Veniste, a Democrat, slams the film. He didn't like how the Albright actress comes across -- "she's portrayed as a screeching harridan and not being resonable," he says -- or the implication that President Clinton was too mired in Lewinsky-gate to focus on Osama bin Laden. "The 9/11 commission report concludede that the president was not distracted in terms of his national security applications and anti-terrorism acts, from pursuing bin Laden. Indeed, it was the Republicans who attacked him for overreacting to the bin Laden threat."
"If there is to be a documentary based on the 9/11 Commission hearings then it ought to be accurate," Ben-Veniste said.
What of the fact that 9/11 Commission co-chair Tom Kean was a consultant to the film and is supporting it whole-heartedly?
"Like many of us, he is fallible," Ben-Veniste said.
More later...Based on the postings from yesterday's blog entry, it seems this controversy is not going away!

"...there was, I think, a very naïve view held by some in the

This doesn't jibe with Reno's reliance on force with regard to Elian Gonzales and the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas.
Deport a child at the barrel of a gun. Murder Americans for supposed firearm violations. But force would be counterproductive with regard to eliminating the leader of a movement with the stated goal of killing Americans?
Yes, yes, I understand completely.

This is crazy, where are all these rumours coming from? Who said the film was leaked to conservatives only? Are you serious when you say this is an attempt from ABC to influence elections? Do you really think Clintons adminstation never heard of Bin Laden? Watch the show before you decide and read the 9/11 Comission Report for yourself. No president is perfect, we need to learn from our mistakes(yes even Clinton made mistakes as has Bush)

These posts are a hoot! Both sides pro and con are so passionate about a film none have seen. In their passion all they are really doing is pointing the finger at one another about who is more to blame for 9/11 -- Clinton or Bush.
The truth cannot be argued. 3,000 Americans are dead either because Bill Clinton identified the threat and aggressively fought it for eight years or, they are dead because for George Bush failed to appreciate the threat and thwart it in less than eight months.
Hmmm ... the math is suggesting something to me ... 7 1/2 months or EIGHT YEARS... who is more to blame?
How about this? Let's lay the blame proportionately.
ABC broadcast the move in its entirety and let us, the American people decide.

ABC News has given credence to the lunatics who say that a plane never crashed into the Pentagon and the WTC was blown up by the government. Read the WaPo today a 5 page article on the merit of their argument. That is bias. The republicans are so used to getting beat up the left wing media, when the dems finally get some negative press, they demand censorship.

Lots of opinions here about a program that 99.9999% haven't seen. Why don't you guys watch it and then judge?
Your bias is showing.

If you show the 9/11 Mini Series, you will lose my entire family as your viewing audience. We will also boycott ALL your sponsors. How dare you dramatize for money the 9/11 event! Good bye, and good luck! And good riddance!
NO PROPAGANDA based on distorted facts.
MORE RIGHT WING LIES.
VOTE LIBERTARIAN.
TO HELL ABC AND DISNEY and their executives.

I guess I can write off ABC as an unbiased place for information (are there any left?). This docu-drama sounds like it's on a par with the Swift Boat liars. I won't be watching it. Give me Clinton over Bush ANY DAY.

Mao and Stalin, were they still alive, would be impressed with the reported quality of this propaganda piece. Seriously, they were always complaining that their stuff never got serious consideration from the critics; it just seemed -like Fox News -too obvious and contrived. Perhaps totalitarian governments around the world could outsource their re-education programming needs to ABC. Good new revenue source and, if you keep it off shore, more profit for you! Hey, don’t let the criticism from the left get you down and just remember that you really have to make this stuff up because, as Jon Stewart said, “the facts have an anti-Bush bias.”

Freedom of Speech, Freedom of the Press, Our Fifth
Amendment Right. 9/11 has happened, and is now History. We are still in a Free Country. When 9/11 happened, our current President had only been in office for a few months. This attack on the U.S. was the worst that I have ever known.
How would any President react? What´s wrong with
researching the historical actions of the Clinton Administration? For any reason? Free Country! I have noticed that President Bush under a microscope at all times. He is one person. Why doesn´t the rest of out Government and elected officials take responsibility. Why can´t we hold the Clinton´s accountable too? They are on our payroll. Yes, we pay them, and dearly. I´ve spoke to people who live in Arkansas. They were telling me that they were shocked that Clinton was voted President. He only rented while in the state. Now, the people there, are wondering why
the Clinton´s haven´t come home? Oh yes, I´m wondering, since Senator Hillary Cinton resides in New York. What is she doing, or has she done to
elevate confidence against the "War on Terror"?
If bashing our current President is what some uneducated people think is effective. Think again.
Everyone is fair game! Look, "Fahrenheit 911" was
a form of free speech. I must admit M.M. the producer looks and comes across like a "skum bag" and a serious "buffet line addict". I wouldn´t give him the credibility of a turn-up. That dude looks psyco. to me. Hmmmm, did anybody else pick-up on that? Yes, I´d like to see some other points of view. My Heart breaks for anyone fighting in the War! My Father, fought for our Country and, he was damn proud!

If ABC puts out some kind of swift-boat piece about 9/11, and dishonors all that died and suffered because of 9/11, I will never watch ABC or go see another Disney film again. I will also find out who advertises on ABC and boycott them.
I am so tired of the media caring so little about the facts and the truth.
P.S. I'm surprised John Lehman said Clinton didn't "get it." I heard Clinton state, in his last interview before leaving office, that foreign terrorism and religious extremism were his number one concerns. He specifically mentioned the Middle East. But - maybe Lehman was referring to something else.

Dear ABC,
We are looking forward to watching the unedited post 9-11 film. Be brave. Don't listen to the whining liberals that want to smash our 1st ammendment rights.
Posted by: ye | Sep 8, 2006 2:32:56 PM
I have always suspected that any 9/11 movie was used to exploit this tragedy for Bush's and Republicans' sake. This lie of a movie tops it all.
Posted by: Veronica | Sep 8, 2006 2:29:00 PM
Don't let anyone intimidate you, broadcast the show.
The First Ammentment was put in the Bill Of Rights to protect you and I. It is not protect either Republican or Democrat from having the truth exposed.

I have long since written off most of the main stream media as left-wing lapdogs for the Democratic party. It now looks as if ABC, at least, is going to quit covering up for the Clinton administration. Clinton's failure to do anything about the worldwide terrorist attacks during his watch and coddling America's enemies gave aid and comfort to the terrorist community. This led directly to 9/11.

ABC Entertainment insists that the 5-hour miniseries "is not a documentary ...It is a dramatization...As such, for dramatic and narrative purposes, the movie contains fictionalized scenes, composite and representative characters and dialogue, and time compression."
In other words it is lies and falsehoods. Since it is imposible to know which incidents are real and which are fiction, one can reject the truth and embrace the lies.
Medical science has found that it is possible to plant false memories and convince the person that these events were real. Mixing truth and falsehoods in a film serves only one purpose and that is to confuse the viewer into believing lies and rejecting reality.
I refuse to watch all docudramas for this very reason.

Some of you people are(again) comparing apples to oranges. The difference between Michael Moore making a movie that people could either PAY to see or not is in NO WAY the same as a publicly aired phantasy by some far right producer who blends fact with his opinions (fiction) and tries to cram them down the throats of America as the truth. Sounds like he was a Bush spinner before he was a so-called writer/producer.
Everyone who has any common sense can figure out that he has an agenda. It's really sad because people who don't or can't read or think for themselves will be tainted for life with the portrayals in this piece of rubbish and further incite those non-thinking people who accept anything the government says as truth. I may add that this movie's depictions were criticized by the 9/11 commission itself. Shame, shame ABC. You have reached a new low in programming not to mention judgement.
FYI Most Amercians have come to the conclusions that:
A. George Bush missed the boat on this.
B. The proposed Iraq war was his main focus pre
9/11 although there was NEVER a terror connection.
C. We are no more safe than we were before 9/11
I, my family and everyone I know will NOT be watching this FICTION IN TRUTH'S CLOTHING. (rt)(Copyright)

You have to love this ! I hope you (ABC) don't edit anything because that would be down right wrong. To those who have written in , you show your true self when you tell ABC they shouldn't run this program. Especially after what's been put out by your liberal freinds IT'S JUST A MOVIE ! LET IT PLAY !

What I want to know, ABC, is if you do indeed edit or pull this fictionalized version of a right wing propogandist's interpretation to the events which led up to 9/11 will you still allow it to be aired and marketed outside the US as "the truth" and not a docudrama as you are currently doing? This fact alone is enough to totally discredit your thoroughly disingenuous statements about the license you took with the facts for the sake of drama.
Also I am wondering what you are going to do about the 900 advance copies you sent out?
Posted by: somegirl | Sep 8, 2006 2:04:31 PM
I'm sorry you feel that dramatics outweigh the truth. I, like many others like Charles Gibson, but I will go to NBC for the news. How can I trust the news on ABC if they feel they have to dress it up, make it misleading and untruthful for a mini-series? Have I been getting the truth as I watched the evening news every day? I agree with others, I think this is a partisan effort to influence the mid-term elections. How dare you use something like this for political reasons. If you feel it is not for political gain, then air it AFTER the elections.

I think it is a SHAME that ABC and Disney would allow such biased opinions be aired for the sake of MONEY...or POLITICS. To use such a subject matter as one of a national tragedy makes me sick. I and others in my community will BOYCOTT ABC, Disney, and any sponors of ABC prior to and after their broadcast of the TRASH known as "Path to 9/11."
