It ain't over till the Cowboy sings

November 09, 2006 2:08 PM

Sen. George Allen, R-VA, is holding a press conference today at 3 pm EST. We suspect he'll concede defeat in his Senate race…but until that happens, the most we can say for absolute certainty is, AS I SAID ON GMA THIS MORNING (FREE VIDEO HERE) that we're told he could concede.

But we'll keep you posted… After all, if Senator-elect Jim Webb, D-VA, is a reality, that means the Democrats have reached lucky number 51 and will control the agenda not only in the House, but the Senate as well. And though Webb, a former Republican and Navy Secretary for President Reagan, may hail from his party's more moderate wing, his victory means considerable power for liberal lions like Kennedy, Leahy, Biden, and Rockefeller…

More later…

Webb is officially from the "moderate" wing of the Democratic party; in reality, he'll caucus with the Dems. and vote often with the moderate wing of the Republicans. Politically he comes from the Reagon Repub. Party. However, if that's what it takes (for now) to remove Allen from the Senate in Va. and Reactionary Rick from the Senate from Pa. etc, so be it. At least Bernie (Vt.) is now in the Senate and not in the House; perhaps he'll have a larger bully pulpit (cf TR) from which to speak.

Good points, Patricia; what poor people in America need is a real champion, like the Republican Party. Never mind their tax cuts that went almost entirely for the benefit of the rich, their fabricated war that has taken 100s of billions of dollars that could have been spent domestically, their effort to do away with the estate tax, which affects only the wealthiest Americans, their unwillingness to raise the minimum wage, etc.

Jake, do you think there is any connection between the quick concession by Allen (surprising to me) and the buzz immediately before and on election day alleging dirty--perhaps illegal--tricks pulled by and on behalf of the Allen campaign?

Yes, DKNY, they are not "too" liberal. But they will fall in line with their party, always. Plus, they are lions. Roar.

Each day-after-Election-Day, Chicago Sun-Times columnist Zay Smith reminds us of a kindler, gentler time with kindler, gentler concession speeches such as that from the late Dick Tuck, a candidate for California state assemblyman in 1964. I wonder if Allen's concession speech will be as memorable as his:

"The people have spoken -- the bastards."

When Webb is "moderate" and Leahy and Biden are "Liberal Lions" you know how far to the right we've drifted over time. I'm heartened by the election of a number of progressive candidates, in particular Sherrod Brown, suggesting that a correction is underway. Hopefully the days of referring to a Democrat to the right of Richard Nixon as a "moderate" Democrat are numbered.
