Let The Games Begin

November 08, 2006 8:53 AM

In the security line at Port Columbus "International" Airport. Thinking about all the ways Washington DC is about to change.

A big Democratic race to watch will be the contest between Rep. John Murtha, D-PA, and Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-MD, to be House Majority Leader. Hoyer has been a good strategist as Democratic No. 2 in the House, but Murtha will lay the claim that his opposition to the Iraq war was a real tipping point for this country and helped contribute significantly to last night's Democratic romp. May the best man win. Could get ugly.

Then there are the machinations as to whom Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi wants to helm the House Intelligence Committee -- the next in line is an impeached former judge, Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-FL.

Who won in your neck of the woods? Any surprises?

I hope the Democratic shift in this country will be a good thing. It seems to be a move to the center. I hope the Dem party leaders will not see it as a win only for their side, however. The GOP embarassed itself with its smugness and arrogance when it won the 2004 elections. The Dems would be well-advised to learn from those mistakes.

So what is next for Rove? Is he going to follow in Rumsfeld's footsteps?

So very excited, Jake, for Hodes and Shea-Porter to represent New Hampshire, the first time since 1912 that both House seats have been held by Democrats. I was cautiously optimistic about Hodes defeating Bass, but completely shocked that Shea-Porter could overcome Bradley.

Out here in Michigan, though, while the gubernatorial and Senate races went they way I was hoping, voters approved Proposal 2, the so-called "Civil Rights Initiative," banning affirmative action. It totally caught me off guard - I know Ann Arbor can be a liberal bubble in a battleground state, but I'd heard and seen no ads recommending a 'yes' vote on 2. But the map of the state shows a different story: Wayne County (home of Detroit) and Washtenaw County (home of the University of Michigan) voted overwhelmingly against it; every other county was in favor.

Congrats to those who supported winning candidates. I am disappointed in our local results, but our system is what brought the U.S. to this point. I support the system (with all its faults) so I will support those elected.

Again Congratulations.

As expected Perry won over the three way split vote. Sigh!

I was surprised that a third of the people in my district actually voted for a failed 'Apprentice' wannabe

CANTWELL!!!! 6 more years! 6 more years!A small faction of Washingtonians tried to get corporate sponsorship in the form of ex-Safeco Insruance candidate (R) Mike McGavick, but indeed, Cantwell's attention to securing alternative energy sources, saving Washinton wetlands, no drilling in ANWAR, more funding for education, pushign forward on stem cell research won her 6 more years over McGavick who didn't have much more to say than Maria voted for the war and is now going back on her vote. Duh. Great night in Seattle!!!

WOW - Missouri
So here in the mostest middest of midwest I am well aware of my environment and just new that our stem-cell amendment didn't have a chance. Though it bans cloning, opponents say that SCNT is cloning (dividing cells?). Michael J. Fox thing happened then suddenly Claire McCaskil appears in a commercial soley for the stem-cell amendment. So, i'm convinced Claire, in a close race, now doesn't stand a chance either. 2am last night my tv gave me a nice surprise. Who knew?

Lois Murphy lost in our CD. Good person, ran a good campaign, shame she lost to the Shrub-clone Gerlach. At least 3 of 4 suburban Phila. counties shifted r to d. Would have wanted 4/4 but...

KS-02: Boyda defeated 10 yr incumbent track star Jim Ryun...GW's weekend visit didn't pull him over the finish line.

I know Iraq is the reason candidates and pundits keep throwing around for the election results - but do they really think that's the case for most voters? Americans are smart enough to know that Iraq isn't going to suddenly become an easy victory just because Capitol Hill's changing.
How about the absolute lameness of Congress lately?
Everything i've heard from people is anger at the Republicans, because they were the ones in charge. Even the hardcore Republicans I heard were frustrated.
They might simply want to start talking about the fact voters were pissed, and Dems are still going to have a lot of work to make them less so.

As for electing Murtha house majority leader, eeek. I don't think that would be a great idea. Obama Barack made a decent point when he observed that the political fallout from whatever actions are taken with respect to Iraq should fall squarely on the Administration's shoulders. The Administration will have to set some sort of deadline for withdrawal and civil war is a very real possibility. If some one like Murtha were to be house majority leader, it would be like giving the GOP a bogeyman on a silver platter (sorry to mix metaphors) - some one for the GOP to point to and say "look this mess is his fault, not ours". I think the democrats need to make themselves bogeyman-proof.
