Virginia is for Lawyers

We hear that Sen. George Allen, R-VA, may concede today that he lost his race for re-election. (HERE'S YESTERDAY'S WEBCAST REPORT)…

Once considered a 2008 presidential candidate, a darling of conservatives, Allen saw his campaign hobbled by the unpopular war in Iraq, the President's low approval ratings, and his own gaffes (LIKE THIS ONE) which lent his campaign to charges of racial insensitivity.

So…there goes that presidential campaign.

Many conservatives, acknowledging Allen's fizzling star months ago and looking away from Sen. John McCain, R-AZ, to find a candidate they can support, have looked to outgoing Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. And reportedly Romney is in talks with legendary hardball South Carolina political consultant Warren Tompkins about handling his campaign down in that crucial early primary state.
Bob Jones…meet Brigham Young.

In other news, Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack today took the first formal step toward running for president by filing documents with the Federal Election Commission to establish his presidential campaign committee, Tom Vilsack for President.
Can you feel the Vilsack-mania sweeping the nation?

This morning I thought I felt the Vilsack-mania sweeping the nation, but it turned out to be some mediocre coffee I had at Starbucks.

After reading your blog today, most potential voters will be asking themselves "Tom who? Mitt who?" Of course, they have about two years to build national identities for themselves, or to reinvent themselves, or whatever it is that politicians do in off years.

I'm reading into the omission of Rudy from the list that he's too liberal for the conservatives that might have been pinning their hopes on Allen. Their loss.

The Boston Herald last week ran a report that Romney may tap Jeb Bush to be his running mate. First, GROAN. Second, Romney has to be on crack if he doesn't recognize that the nation ranges from Bush hate to Bush fatigue. Tapping Jeb Bush would doom whatever chance he might have to make it on a national level. The spector of another four more years of any Bush is enough to make my head explode.

Running mate issues aside, I like Romney as a governor. He's completely dismantled patronage here in MA, no small feat. When he made budget cuts, he spared essential services like services for the homeless. And when local aid was cut, he had the honor to attend town and city meetings and deliver the news - good and bad - face to face. He's a religious man, but he's not sanctimonious about it, nor does he wear it on his sleave. He's spent most of his life as a business man, so he doesn't talk or act like a politician in many ways.
