Lazy Sunday

I don't understand these syndicated Sunday shows that clearly tape days before. I'm watching one right now in which the panel is discussing what a shame it is that Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi has dissed two candidates to chair the House Intelligence Committee (Reps. Jane Harman, D-CA, and Alcee Hastings, D-FL) without naming an actual candidate.

But she did name a candidate to chair the committee. On Friday. Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D-TX), aka "SILVER."

Let's get with it, people. The new media age is minute-by-minute. You can't tape these things days ahead of time and expect nothing to change in between.

THE MEN WHO WOULD BE KING:

In other news, former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-SD, has announced that he WILL NOT BE A CANDIDATE for President in 2008. Ho-hum.

This follows A SIMILAR REALIZATION OF REALITY this week by outgoing Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-TN, who also found slightly dampened enthusiasm for his White House hopes.

Today on THIS WEEK, Mr. Stephanopoulos spent some time with two other Midwestern Democrats with longish-shot presidential hopes -- Sen. Evan Bayh, D-IN, and Gov. Tom Vilsck, D-IA.

IRAQ AND ROLL:

Before Election Day, if a Democrat had said that "it is time for a major adjustment" in Iraq because "Clearly, what U.S. forces are currently doing in Iraq is not working well enough or fast enough," I wonder if he would have been criticized as being a defeatist, an appeaser, a terrorist-coddler.

If he had suggested that some of the credible options ahead of us were to "Set a firm withdrawal date to leave" or to "Assist in accelerating an aggressive federalism plan, moving towards three separate states -- Sunni, Shia, and Kurd" or to "Try a Dayton-like process," would President Bush and his media allies have said that Democrat wanted to cut and run?

If he had compared pushing the Iraqis to take more responsibility for security to a need to "start 'taking our hand off the bicycle seat,'" would we be hearing cable news chatterers talk about the demeaning, patronizing way this fictitious Democrat referred to Iraqis?

Reason I ask is because these are quotes taken directly from a memo written by since-fired Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld written two days before he was kicked to the curb, and since LEAKED TO THE NEW YORK TIMES.

Tomorrow mass media coverage will begin of the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group. Should be interesting...
