December 08, 2006 11:40 AM

MY PODCAST PARTNER HARI SREENIVASAN WRITES:

Holiday shopping can be a jungle...and its bigger than amazon.com. So in an effort to help you make your way through, I'm encouraging you to try a socially responsible gift over the holidays.

To find a retailer or e-tailer that deals in fair trade gifts http://www.fairtradefederation.org/memol.html

Two gift sites whose founders I've interviewed are:
http://www.appreciate.org/ss

Based here in NY-
and

http://www.worldofgood.com

If you'd like to use your wealth for something other than a gift- perhaps donate to a charity- some organizations I've personally worked with/ donated to / or whose founders I've interviewed for ABC (in alphabetical order only)

http://www.ceowomen.org

One of the organizations I've supported for several years and which taught me what "fair trade" means is SERRV International. They publish an absolutely stunning catalogue of carefully crafted art, gift, and food items, any of which would be welcome. Since it's only a couple of weeks until the big day, they also have a web address----and online shopping, too. I can personally vouch for their coffees and chocolate--delicious!

Jake, I'd like a cow for the holidays. I've asked my family and friends to either donate to Oxfam, or buy a cow from them for a mere $75. That cow goes to a family in a third world country and supplies them both nourishment and financial opportunity.
Not as sexy as the Victoria's Secret million dollar bra, but close.
