Ironic photo op alert

January 24, 2007 10:39 AM

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and one of the old bulls of the House, Rep John "Dirty Air" Dingell, D-Mich, will hold an ironic photo op at the Washington Auto Show today.

Dingell, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, is at odds with Pelosi and many other environmentalist Democrats (and Republicans) over fuel efficiency standards for cars. Dingell, after all, represents auto-manufacturing state Michigan, and for years he has been one of the chief roadblocks to such standards.

It has gotten to the point that Pelosi last week announced the formation of a new House Select Committee on Climate Change, to be chaired by green-y Rep Ed Markey, D-Mass.  Dingell snarled at the creation of the committee, saying it wasn't needed. But it may be the most efficient way for Pelosi to implement legislation intended to combat global warming while surpassing Dingell's committee, where such measures would likely be watered down.

At 3:30 pm today, the two will pose for photographs with various cars, the machines that stand between them. Though their focus today, kumbaya-style, will be hybrid vehicles.

The more I hear about Speaker Pelosi's modus operandi, the more I'm favorably impressed. The idea of creating a committee on climate change to bypass Rep. Dingell's committee is inspired: the payoff will come if its proposals can be enacted without interference from the "old guard."

Dingell is very old and should retire. He has been in office for a very long time. He is exactly what is wrong with politics and why young people are shut off from getting involved. The people of MI would do better to be represented by a more creative leader.
