The importance of Obama's beefcake photo

January 17, 2007 11:17 AM

Last night on Nightline, we took a longer look at Mr. Obama; the DOT COM version is here.

Of note: the bathing-suit photo of Sen. Obama that appeared in PEOPLE magazine. Aside from its obvious cheese factor, there was a real issue there for the senator and his family, according to family friend Valerie Jarrett.

"He was mortified. … It was a wake-up call. They think they are enjoying a quiet family moment, and they weren't," Jarrett said. "So in a sense it's a message that this is what their life is going to be like, and he's decided that it's worth it."

Good report, Jake! Until Sen. Obama's photo ran on the cover of "People," I'd forgotten that the paparazzi also hound politicians, too. It will be extremely interesting to see how the Senator's "exploratory committee" decides to advise him on his Presidential run: that is, whether they figure he can count on enough money from potential backers to fulfill his amibition. He's stated that he'll make his final announcement on Feb. 10.
