The State Of Our Union Is....?

January 23, 2007 8:46 AM

Yesterday on World News, for the WEBCAST, and ON DOT-COM we took a look at why the presidential race has started so early and why it looks to be the first billion dollar race in U.S. history.

Pop star John Mayer WEIGHS IN on the controversy caused by allegedly foul-mouthed actor Isaiah Washington from ABC's Grey's Anatomy.

And our friend Jeff Goldberg of the New Yorker looks at this year's entertainment at the pending White House Correspondents' Dinner -- RICH LITTLE.  A reaction to the controversial appearance of Mr. Colbert? You be the judge.

Tonight Mr. Bush presents his 6th State of the Union address...at a time of unprecedentedly low (for him) poll ratings.... What would you say if you were him? What do you think he'll offer?

It is so sad that Bush refuses to hear the cries of the people for the people. He and his cronies seems to be the only one who believes we need to increase our number of troops in Iraq! The majority of his own party disagrees with him. Is there anything we can do? It is not about winning; it is about saving the lives of our children, sisters, brothers, and friends who have volunteered to serve our country. And have served well. They do not deserve to continue to be put in arms way of a civil war that is not ours to fight. It is time for them to come home. This is not our war, it is Bush's war.
We should not have gone over there in the first place, especially behind lies that should have never been told. Now it is out of control. Sending more US troops is not going to change that. Bring them home. It is amazing that we as Americans have no recourse with a President who only cares about what he wants. It feels more like a dictatorship then democracy. It said to think, there is nothing we or Congress can do. What does that say about "the land of the free".

Why does everyone think that putting down our President is such a great thing. Yes I'm republican, but I would never have talked about President Clinton or any of our other great Democratic Presidents in the way people talk about President Bush. If you don't agree with the President, that's fine, but instead of bashing him, why don''t we pray for him to make the right decision, or if you're not religious then try just simply being glad that we HAVE NOT been bombed again since 9/11. In all he's done wrong, he's done something right. We're deterring terrorists everyday. I don't want to see our brave men and women of the army die for our country, but I can guarantee you that if they ever had to do it all again oneday(God forbid) they would do no differently. Our American troops are the true Americans in the country. No one told them to join the army they did it because they believe in the cause, the cause for America and all she stands for. No one else has as much determination, dedication, and loyalty as them. I think people should stop putting down the war, the troops, and the President, it's like saying you hate America. Meybe the Iraqi's don't want our help, meybe they do, but lets let time tell, and not everybody's two-bit opinion. Oh, and I think President bush could do some things differently, but I'm looking for him in his State of the Union Address, to give the American people his best speech ever, and to give it from his heart; from a man who doesn't care what people say. But at the same time we as Americans must remember that the President is only as human as you reading this, he IS NOT God, so don't expect him to be able to perform like Him, and provide all the right answers. In the Presidential Oath of Office it says, "...to the best of my ability." I beleive, whether a President is Democrat OR Republican, that we shouldn't put him down, because it takes a remarkable person to handle that job. When a President avoids watching the news and reading the newspaper because it has something negative in it or on it about him then that's when people should stop and think, "Meybe the President has feelings too!"

I think its sad Bush "thinks" Americans are still listening to him and beleiving his lies. The only way the state of the union will improve is by his leaving office before he completely destroys the credibility of this country. Then again, it may be too late for that. What I really don't understand is why ANYONE would want to follow him in office and have to inherit the mess he is leaving. It will take literally generations to unravel and straighten out his misdeads.

If I were him I would put an end to the war on Marijuana, withdraw our troops from the Iraq Civil War, and resign.

The State of our Union is pretty bad - because this administration has taken the country on a neo-conservative track as the 'global policeman' without a real understanding that our Constitution does not call for this. As a veteran, I am appalled that our military is being misused in this current endeavor. Instead of defending the Republic, they are involved in a bitter civil conflict in a barbaric section of the world that neither honors freedom or democracy. They worship tribe and sect over the good of their people. The Iraqi government has requested that we leave by July of 2007. I say - lets oblidge them and leave 3 months earlier. Why should we continue to sacrifice our sons and daughters to protect a people who don't want us there anyway.

The state of our union is uncertain at best. I read the article on this website about how the US is no longer admired as the "city on the hill" by other countries and I've come to the realization how far and how fast we've fallen under the poor leadership we've had. I don't expect much from the SOTU speech tonight, just the President desperately trying to shore up his sinking approval ratings by making insincere overtures to the Dems in limited domestic policy issues and by keeping the ever-worsening condition of Iraq out of the important parts of the speech. Ideally tonight, the President would admit his mismanagement of the war and assert that he'd adopt the Iraq Study Commission plans as his "new way forward," but little chance of that happening. Instead, we'll be left with such half-baked and ill-conceived ideas such as making spaceflights to Mars. Perhaps his speech should be greeted with the cries of "Only two more years!"

Also, I saw your report yesterday evening on the early start to the presidential race and appreciated the analysis of why ($) the race is beginning so soon. And John Mayer's suggestion to quell the unrest on the "Grey's Anatomy" set is an inspired one!

When the Democrats unveiled their security initiative, it was ignored to show yet another boilerplate, stay-the-course speech of the President, despite the fact that the only people saying anything new and noteworthy were the Democrats. They swept the Congress in spite of all that.

Now that Bush is a lame duck, and the country's mind has pretty much been made up, the only bit of news to come out of tonight's speech will by by Webb, who will present the new course America will be taking, at the behest of the country. Bush can climb on board if he wants to.

You have to cover the President's speech, no matter how irrelevant, but it's time to begin the national debate about the war by airing the alternatives to hemmorrage-til-I-leave.

For an idea of what Bush might say in his State of the Union Address tonight, lets look back at what he's said in some of his previous ones, shall we?

2003
"The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa."

2004
"Already, the Kay Report identified dozens of weapons of mass destruction-related program activities"

2005
"Our men and women in uniform are fighting terrorists in Iraq, so we do not have to face them here at home."

2006
"We're on the offensive in Iraq, with a clear plan for victory."

"Fellow citizens, we are in this fight to win, and we are winning."

"As we make progress on the ground, and Iraqi forces increasingly take the lead, we should be able to further decrease our troop levels---but those decisions will be made by our military commanders, not by politicians in Washington, D.C."

Does Bush think we're stupid? Or does he just that The State of the Union Address is stand up comedy? I know of at least 3,056 dead Americans who aren't laughing at Bush's follies anymore. And I wonder how many of the 23,000 wounded find that it still hurts too much to laugh.
