"I hadn't heard that"

February 27, 2007 9:07 AM

Aboard Air Force Two en route to Muscat, Oman, Vice President Dick Cheney learned that the suicide bombing at the main U.S. military base in Afghanistan this morning had been aimed at him.

"It seems to me I think it was about 10:00 a.m. this morning, I heard a loud boom," Cheney recounted. "And shortly after that, the Secret Service came in and told me there had been an attack on the main gate, apparently a suicide bomber. They moved me for a relatively brief period of time to one of the bomb shelters nearby, near the quarters I was staying in. And as the situation settled down, and they got a better sense in terms of what was going in, then I went back to my room. It was almost time to leave."

A reporter asked: "What do you think the symbolism is there for whoever carried this out? They said publicly that this was aimed at you. What does that -- "

"Who said that?" the VP interrupted.

"The Taliban."

"I hadn't heard that," the VP said.

"It was a Taliban spokesman quoted, saying that the attack was trying to get you," said a reporter.

Said another, "What we're quoting them as saying is that they took responsibility for it, and they said they were aware that you were there."

"I hadn't heard that," the VP repeated.

"Did you at any time consider changing your itinerary about Kabul after learning this news? Or was that never-- "

"Never an option," said the VP.

Speaking of Vice Presidents, a conservative think tank in Tennessee is calling Al Gore an environmental hypocrite, deriding the "inconvenient truth" of his $30,000 annual utility bill. Read more about it HERE.

In our ABC News Shuffle "Road to the White House" podcast series, this week we have an interview with Rep Tom Tancredo, R-Colo, about being the congressman from Columbine, and how he sees an opening for his presidential campaign. Listen to it HERE.

The 4,000-square-foot house is a model of environmental rectitude.

Geothermal heat pumps located in a central closet circulate water through pipes buried 300 feet deep in the ground where the temperature is a constant 67 degrees; the water heats the house in the winter and cools it in the summer. Systems such as the one in this "eco-friendly" dwelling use about 25% of the electricity that traditional heating and cooling systems utilize.

A 25,000-gallon underground cistern collects rainwater gathered from roof runs; wastewater from sinks, toilets and showers goes into underground purifying tanks and is also funneled into the cistern. The water from the cistern is used to irrigate the landscaping surrounding the four-bedroom home. Plants and flowers native to the high prairie area blend the structure into the surrounding ecosystem.

No, this is not the home of some eccentrically wealthy eco-freak trying to shame his fellow citizens into following the pristineness of his self-righteous example. And no, it is not the wilderness retreat of the Sierra Club or the Natural Resources Defense Council, a haven where tree-huggers plot political strategy.

This is President George W. Bush's "Texas White House" outside the small town of Crawford.

Chicago Tribune April 2001

--- Talk is cheap. Gore's home in Tennessee uses 20X more energy than the average American home! If Gore wants the rest of the world to do something about global warming, maybe he ought to start by taking notes from our president.

We are in the "last throes if you will" of the Taliban :-)
Speaking of ABC News one just has to watch the current comedy called Nightline to really comprehend how far they've fallen. With "journalists" like Tapper, Moran, McFadden; and the very very perceptive Note written by the very very perceptive and "fair and balanced" Mark Halperin - ABC News is not just fegurgitating Drudge - it has become the Drudge Report !!!

Wow, once again Jake Tapper takes his journalistic cues straight from the Drudge Report regarding the Gore smear job.

Glad to hear that you folks at ABC are doing all that hard work copying and pasting from Right-Wing rumor sites- keep up the good work!

From this incident, as well as from his stellar record in predicting what will occur in Iraq, it's obvious that the VP has never been one to let reality interfere with his perceptions of how the universe should be.
