The Race to the White House
February 01, 2007 8:52 AM
We covered Sen. Joe Biden's controversial comments about Sen. Barack Obama last night on World News with Charles Gibson -- FREE VIDEO HERE.
How will a candidate prone to the occasional gaffe do in the age of Youtube?
Biden was felled in his presidential run 20 years ago by various verbal missteps. Now the technology exists for gaffes to live on in perpetuity.
HERE IS SEN JOE BIDEN on Indian-Americans in his home state. (He defends that comment HERE).
HERE HE IS talking about how he'll do fine in the South Carolina primary because Delaware was once "a slave state."
Well, HE HIMSELF SELF he would "try to be the best Joe Biden" he can be... a task that he said he would need to achieve in order to win.
Running for office, especially for president, is unforgiving. You may have great ideas, expertise, experience...but one slip-up can ruin it all....
In other presidential news of interest, the Washington Post TAKES A LOOK at the Georgetown decorator who made Sen. Hillary Clinton's home look so warm and homey in her web announcement. And while some bloggers questioned the "carefully staged artificial background," the story notes, "Sources familiar with the landscaping have identified those plants as small azaleas and nandina shrubs, still vibrant because of last month's unusually mild temperatures."
What say you??

Jake writes: "How will a candidate prone to the occasional gaffe do in the age of Youtube?"
As we saw with the infamous Dean Scream, youtube and viral video isn't the only way to memorialize a gaffe. How many times were we subjected to viewing the Scream on tv? Seriously. Who could forget it. An entire candidacy down the tubes. Because of the Scream. And that's a perfect example of a gaffe becoming magnified and skewing public perception in a manner that isn't beneficial to the system. Youtube may represent a new medium, but it isn't revolutionary in that regard.
And with respect to Biden, I would argue that he's not prone to an occasional gaffe, but rather is racially insensitive in a subtle way. A black person once brought to my attention the fact that white folks marvel at how articulate Rice and Powell are. Why? Were Sandy Berger and Madeleine Albright less articulate? And the conclusion is that people find Rice and Powell's skills remarkable because they're black. We don't expect it. I agree with that conclusion.
So while the pundits seem to be focusing in on the "clean" remark, I can't help but be reminded of my black friend who reemed me for using the term "articulate" in reference to Rice and Powell.
And if Biden takes heat for it, it will be deserved (unlike the manuere heeped upon then-candidate Dean).

I say, it looks like we're about to concoct another disasterous war in Iran to make up for the failures of the other two wars, and the election is two years away. Escalating a catastrophic failure is today.
Has the media seriously learned nothing since 2003?

This and almost everything else about him are sure to derail his run to the White House. How sad that Joe Biden has no idea that Joe Biden has exactly no chance to be the next President.

If Sen. Biden is trying to be the best he can be to win the Dems' nomination, then his remarks and his apology of sorts yesterday doesn't hold out much hope, does it? It's a pity, since he's obviously an intelligent, thoughtful, experienced cnadidate who sometimes doesn't know when to stop talking. It's clear he has a lot of ideas to contribute to the campaign discussion, but he seems to be oblivious to the old maxim, "It's better to keep silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove any doubt."
As for the newspaper story, this seems another good example of how the internet can drive the mainstream media to report on matters of very limited concern. A story about interior decorators for politicians? What's next, a story about politicians' dentists and the dirty secrets behind their toothbrushing habits?
