Precluding Embarrassment

April 24, 2007 1:07 PM

Evidence from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing is creating questions about how high any alleged misinformation campaign about Cpl  Pat  Tillman's death may have gone.

The committee is looking into why the Pentagon spread false information about Tillman's death due to friendly fire in April 2004, and the capture and rescue of Private Jessica Lynch in Iraq in 2003.

Democrats are pointing to evidence that a White House speechwriter was seeking information about Tillman on April 28, 2004, and one day later a Major General -- alluding to a pending presidential speech -- warned a General that Tillman may have been killed by friendly fire ...doing so as to "preclude" any "embarrassment" for the president.

This was weeks before May 29, 2004, when the Tillman family was told the truth that their son had been killed by friendly fire.

A week after Tillman was killed on April 22, 2004, then-Maj. Gen. Stanley McChrystal sent a "P-4" memo to a four-star general on April 29, 2004, saying (emphases mine):

"IT IS HIGHLY POSSIBLE THAT CORPORAL TILLMAN WAS KILLED BY FRIENDLY FIRE. THIS POTENTIAL FINDING IS EXACERBATED BY THE UNCONFIRMED BUT SUSPECTED FINDING THAT POTUS AND THE SECRETARY OF THE ARMY MIGHT INCLUDES COMMENTS ABOUT CORPORAL TILLMAN'S HEROISM AND HIS APPROVED SILVER STAR MEDAL IN SPEECHES CURRENTLY BEING PREPARED, NOT KNOWING THE SPECIFICS SURROUNDING HIS DEATH...I FELT THAT IT WAS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU RECEIVED THIS INFORMATION AS SOON AS WE DETECTED IT IN ORDER TO PRECLUDE ANY UNKNOWING STATEMENTS BY OUR COUNTRY'S LEADERS WHICH MIGHT CAUSE PUBLIC EMBARRASSMENT IF THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF CORPORAL TILLMAN'S DEATH BECOME PUBLIC."

The day before, April 28, 2004, an email exchange between Pentagon officials indicated that White House speechwriter John Currin had been seeking information about Tillman "for the President's speech at the Correspondent's dinner this coming Saturday."

In that May 1, 2004 speech, President Bush did not mention the false stories about Tillman's death that others in the Pentagon had spread.

"The loss of Army Corporal Pat Tillman last week in Afghanistan brought home the sorrow that comes with every loss, and reminds us of the character of the men and women who serve on our behalf ," the president said.

At Tillman's memorial service in San Jose on May 3, 2004, Navy SEAL Steve White said in a eulogy that Tillman "made the call. He dismounted his troops, taking the fight to the enemy, uphill, to seize the tactical high ground from the enemy. This gave his brothers and the downed vehicle time to move off that target. He directly saved their lives with that move. Pat sacrificed himself so his brothers could live."

That story was later proven fictitious. White later said he was given that information by an Army official an hour or so before the ceremony, and that he regrets saying them.

I can't believe the furor over this issue. Would Pat Tillmans family grieve any less if they had been told he was killed by friendly fire? Does it lessen his heroic gesture of giving up a lucrative NFL career to risk his life on the battlefront.
He made that decision knowing full well that he could be killed or crippled by his action. That's what makes him a hero, not a coverup. Is it wrong to honor that particular decsion as heroic regardless of the circumstances of his death?
Every administration has been caught in a lie at one time or another. Does the government have the responsabilty of telling the truth when panic or more grief would be the result?

I feel for the Tillman Family for all that they have been put through and are still going through. How many more cover ups are there that the Top Brass are not telling us about I think it's high time that the Truth came out and they should be brought before the high court of this country and asked to tell the Truth. They should also be CourtMartialed for lieing to the American People and all the families that have lost a Son or A Daughter in this stupid senless war. We need to get out now not later.

The war has already served its purpose: note the doubled/tripled gasoline prices, the profit from which goes into the pockets of Bush's owners who are the Saudi kings. They have been repaid for underwriting Georgie's business misadventures throughout his "career". It is unforgivable that he used America's children's blood and the Iraqi country for that. But then, he's never paid any of his own bills himself. He doesn't know how. But why doesn't America have the protests of the 60's against this war?
Yes, all Americans - even the parents of our soldiers - are guilty of being sheep in the presence of the wolf who eats their lambs.
Shame on America for allowing GW even one more day in office!

If there was a law against LYING, the entire Bush Mafia would be behind bars, where they belong.Does anyone really beleive that they care about our troops or their families?Of course they dont. All they care about is more power. My heart goes out to the Tillman family. To add insult to injury was crass and shameful. But these creatures do not know the meaning of compassion and decency.

I'm so disgusted with Bush and his administration. As a lifelong Republican, I have absolutely come to the conclusion that he is the worst president and worst leader this country has ever had. I love our country and would fight to the end to protect her, but maybe, just maybe the rest of the world's "perception" of the U.S.A. isn't as much perception as many of us would like to think. Bush must go. He has positively no agenda but his own. November 2008 can't come any faster.

Why hasn't the commander in chief been impeached??? That is my only question and concern. Lies, Lies, Lies, when will it end? Let's send his daughter's to boot camp and then a couple tours in Iraq and I bet the war would be over in a hurry!

I agree that the Tillmans' should have been told the truth up front, but as far as whether he was killed by enemy or friendly fire should not be a point. No matter how our soldiers die they are all Heroes. It should have been left up to the family how and what the public was told but a congressional hearing is not an answer. To be honest I would have rather remembered a football hero the other way. It was not meant to hurt or hide anything it was meant to give hope, spirit and a belief in the American dream back to so many that lack or do not remember what it is to be AN AMERICAN. He still died a HERO, just wanting to defend our beautiful country makes everyone who serves one heck of a HERO. Let's remember what he stood for and what he scarificed for; not some dragged out blame game... Who does that honor?

hello, does it matter that tillmans family is probably still suffering over this and everytime the news and the lying president and his staff bring it up they go thru' the whole thing again...our news media has as usual not thinking of what's important and who it's going to hurt but how long they can drag something out! it's mostly conjecture with a spin on it as far as the news is concerned

well all I can say if anyone here thinks they can run a country better than bush ...go for it and see how tough it has to be. Murders in this country are covered up everyday by state officals both Republicans and Democrats so most everybody would do wrong to cover their own ___

I totally agree that the Bush Admin has been nothing but lies for ths war. The only thing that this admin cares about is the war not the Soldiers or the People of Iraq both side are suffering badly and we should pull out while we still have the chance how many more people must die in this senseless war what are we fighting for for the safety of our nation for the oil over there you think Maybe??. The Media and everyone and everyone else has been lied to and the Bush admin continues to do so. Figure Top Aides in the Military cover up the truth they should all be taken out of Power for all the Bullshit they keep feeding the people of this country. Iran wants to talk to President Bush on a variety of different subjects and the President says NO not until they disarm their Nuclear Facilities. I mean who does Bush think he is and what right does he have to tell another country what to do. He's in this war to make himself look good like he is doing this country a great service NOT!!!!. From everything that I have heard it was supposed to be in and out that is all take Sadam down and leave five years later and more soliders and Civilians die each day with no end in sight. This whole war is a lost cause. They should be looking to making this country stronger not weaker you can't keep sending young men and women over their to fight a loseing battle we need to bring them home not keep sending them over their. Don't get me wrong I admire what our soldiers are doing over there but even they can only take so much they want to come home to their loved ones and know they did the best they could do.

my only concern in this whole situation, is that the Tillman family has to suffer twice. first, the loss of their son, and then, to find out, that they were deceived. my son has been in iraq, i know the worry parents go through, when their child is in harms way, but for god's sake, be honest with people. They have given their child's life for our country. it hurts me to go over this in my mind, so i can't imagine the pain this is for Pat's brother and parents. I have one son in the navy, one in the army, they are dedicated to their country, just as these brothers were, they fought for truth, they deserve to receive the truth. I am heart broken for the Tillman's. Nothing can fix what happened to Pat. He was such a wonderful Patriotic man, God bless him and his family.

Well it is like this. There is no need of loosing all of the lives of all the people that are fighting. And all the people that live there. For thousans of years they have been fighting in the middle east. Why does the US think they can stop it? No we can not. As long as there are religous groups they will fight. Look as far back in the bible days they fought. And it will go on for a thousnd more years. people can not live in Iraq without a ruler. I know Saddam was in the wrong but that is the only way they can live there. Its like baby sitting the ruler has to keep his kids in check. They can not survive unless they have someone tough like that. This new prime minister is not firm enough to handle all the mess there. If they would catch some insurgents in Bagdad. And do like Saddam and handcuff them together. Take them downtown in the middle of the day and execute them on the on the spot in front of all the other insurgents that play normal during the day. This would set a presedence. And some of this would stop. But no way unless we kill all three religous groups there. They will always fight. Look in the big history book the bible. Thanks Joe

I so recall the effort of then Defense Secretary, Don Rumsfeld, to propose and institute a "Department of MisInformation" quite early on in the Bush Administration. There was public outrage and the whole issue went under ground at that point. It appears that the concept never died even if the birth and development of the 'Department' never occurred!

Why do we not hear anything about this piece of history in conjunction with the accumulated evidence of the administration's misinformation and lies?

Posted by: Bruce | Apr 24, 2007 3:19:30 PM

So much for restoring dignity to the White House. Bush has brought more shame to it than all previous presidents combined.

Posted by: TheNicks | Apr 24, 2007 3:14:33 PM

Why does the media keep calling this misinformation as if it was just a small mistake when it is clearly purposeful lies to glorify the war and make deaths and injuries of solders seem as exciting as a movie plot. Yuck. Republicans have no same!

Posted by: Vanessa | Apr 24, 2007 2:51:22 PM

It's like Trump said, the whole Bush administration has been a lie.

Posted by: cdhohn | Apr 24, 2007 2:47:29 PM

Lies,Spins,Slants,PR leniency, lack of responsibility,Gutless brass,--same idiots who claimed the massive aircraft on radar 12/07/1941 in Hawaii were "merely B-17's coming in" and when will we ever get some real military leaders who will take the truth in the gut and swallow.?

Posted by: petjoel | Apr 24, 2007 2:39:39 PM

This administration doesnt really care about the soldiers, only about how the war is perceived politically, which is why they think we cannot admit the truth and leave. They would rather risk more lives than admit they were wrong about everything.

Posted by: Dan | Apr 24, 2007 2:22:37 PM

There's an old saying that "the truth will out," here, despite the best efforts of the Pentagon and the efforts of the high-ranking officials of the Executive Branch. Were this the first time such "disinformation" occurred in this administration, I'd be sufficiently outraged. But, since this administration will go down in history as one of the most shameless in manipulating the media ("WMD in Iraq," "Iraq as a refuge for alQaeda"), such behavior shouldn't come as any surprise. What is outrageous to me is this administration's utterly cynical use of Cpl. Tillman's memory to concoct a fiction to further its own political/war agenda. Such lies about him and about Pfc. Lynch dishonor both of them and are far worse than those told to America during Vietnam!
