Does Mitt Romney believe in evolution?

May 08, 2007 11:20 AM

At the GOP debate last week, only three candidates raised their hands when asked if they did not believe in evolution -- Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., and Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kansas.

Our friend David Brody at Christian Broadcasting News asked former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for a clarification, since Romney is trying to appeal to conservative Christian voters.

Writes Brody (LINK HERE): "The majority of Born Again Evangelicals take the Creationist viewpoint. Some Evangelicals already have concerns about Romney's Mormon faith. He needs support from Evangelicals to win. That's why this issue is an important one that needs to be cleared up. I don't think this is an issue that Romney can avoid. I believe his views need to be clear."

And Brody doesn’t find the answer Romney's campaign gave to be satisfactory. "Governor Romney believes both science and faith can help inform us about the origins of life in this world."

What do you think?

When Presidential candidates are talking about issues only not smear tactics

It is time that a responsible candidate talk about what he/she can do for the country, what can be accomplished. How can he/she improve our country to benefit its citizens?
How to improve the economy, how to overcome Washington’s political shenanigans and pass/enforce some laws and statutes that benefit the citizens as a whole instead of special interest groups.

Defaming and degrading the opposing candidate does not promote more votes but voter apathy. Showing the public what you plan to accomplish and how you plan to accomplish it is the theme – and once in office pursue those promises.

Any candidate who promises to accomplish his promises while in office and those promises were not accomplished, must resign from office for a better man.

We are a great nation with great people – we can do better than what has been done.
We have the knowledge, technology, resources and manpower – let us utilize it as a unified nation.

The American public is sick and tired of promises they say talk is cheap “show me – and I will believe”.

Mitt Romney has changed his opinion just like Ghouliani. The only **Consistent** Conservative is RON PAUL. His record is UN-Tarnished! Lets vote 1 for the constitution, and revolt against blatent censorship. Please stop deleting comments and viewpoints, that type of blocking should be left to China!!

Evolution. What a great question to focus on. Now when current Mormon speaker of the House, Harry Reid, passes a bill enforcing and regulating evolution we know how potential presidential candidate Mitt Romney would vote on such a critical issue.

How will we live in the evolutionists create an evolution tax for us. How oppressive for the creationists as they would be kept from practicing creationism due to the evolutionists new laws.

Or this might be a political agenda by someone who wants a republican candidate that won't stand a chance against the democratic candidate.

Isn't it odd how many stupid little articles are appearing to bash Romney based on religion. Bigotry is alive and well in the US, however you need to be a member of a certain political party to get away with it. Romney has what's referred to as a religious problem. Reid however has the same religion, but instead of a problem it's an asset to his caraceter. This is far from equal treatment and coverage!

By his own testimony, Darwin probably would not be an evolutionist today. Intelligent design is not a "religious" argument, but a scientific one based on mounds of valid data attested to by thousands of trained scientists.

Evolution is a philosophy and idiology fanatically defended by propagandists for materialism. Note that scientific arguments against evolution are never challenged with facts, but almost always call forth a deluge of ad-hominum bluster and vitriol.

Presently, only a few evolutionists have the courage to admit the lack of foundation for their beliefs. If, some day, facts calling evolution into question are refuted, well and good. Then, at least, we'll have real science, not leming-like mass hysteria.

My concern with Romney and any other candidate is whether or not I think their positions on the issues are reasonable and best for this country. The theory of evolution is well established by fact and it's good to see Mr. Romney (appear to) accept that. I agree that science and faith can help us deal with ultimate issues of human purpose and destiny.

Vote RON PAUL...our last hope for this country.

Romney, Guiliani & McCain are all beltway politicians who represent the status quo. This country needs a change for the better - no more needless wars, no more imperialistic foreign policy, smaller more restrained government, lower taxes, more freedom. Ron Paul is the only candidate who promises and will deliver such a policy.

Vote Ron Paul in the primary!

Why would you or anyone care what I think about these things? Why would I think MY opinion on them, moreso than any other persons' views, or even "in addition to" any/all other persons' views makes one iota of difference.

Hey, I'm hard pressed to explain the pros and cons of the electoral college. I have no idea how electricity works or how a perfectly formed picture can appear on a screen in my living room after I put this little flat thing in the machine attached to it, or if I punch in the numbers 2-6 on my remote control. It beats me how the core of the earth can by so hot that volcanoes form whereas it's -10 some nights that I have to take my dogs outside in January.

Are you serious? What do I think? I'm consistently amused by those who are no smarter than I but have taken some kind of firm position on these, the riddles of all the ages.

What folly. I'll just say that if a candidate for POTUS spends much time contemplating stuff like this, I'd just as soon he/she went off and wrote a book or something rather than take on the job of running the executive branch and all that goes with it.

Far be it for me to second guess either the candidates or our Holy Father. This subject is undeniably complex.
I believe Our Lord supplied the spark to create this universe in the ‘Big Bang’ but that he has been a guiding force; He enabled evolution to make such remarkable, astounding and completely extraordinary leaps throughout the history of this universe, in my opinion.
How could there NOT be a guiding intelligence to accomplish this?
In my opinion; to believe this is an ‘Either-Or’ proposition is an example of human arrogance which verges on the incredulous.
Not so long ago it was standard and educated belief the Sun revolved around the 'Flat' earth. Previous to that; We were the center of the Universe!
A perfect example of human conceit.

I don't speak for any candidate.

Both science and religion seek the truth, but they answer different questions using different approaches.
Often times we find them answering the same answers with different approaches.

It is possible that a sincere answer to a loaded question like that may require something that resides beyond our present conclusions? Perhaps a creation that is continously evolving.

Perhaps seeking this out objectively requires the faith of a scientist. Or the careful objectivity and critical thinking or detachment of a believer.

Does Mitt Romney believe in Mitt Romney? This man has been on more sides of an issue than John Kerry. His campaign has finally reduced itself to taking all sides of an issue without taking any side. They're finally adapting to him. Word in the Massachusetts State House is that his portrait as Governor isn't done yet because every time he sits for the artist, he takes a different position and the artist has to start over.

What a joke. RON PAUL clearly is the candidate to choose if we want any chance at keeping this country from complete mafia UN CFR NWO takeover.

Posted by: ty | May 9, 2007 2:27:40 PM

Ron Paul wants to eliminate the Federal Reserve. The media will never let him become well-known.

NO ONE likes the RomneyGuilianiMcCain creature. NO ONE, not christian fundies, not libertarians, not moderates, NO ONE.

SEND ALL EVERY PENNY YOU CAN SPARE TO RON PAUL!!! This long time Republican, who voted for the lying Democrats this past November, won't believe any more lies, even from the corporate owned media!!!

RON PAUL FOR PRESIDENT

Ron Paul in 2008!

Posted by: Alex Jones | May 9, 2007 1:11:49 PM

Evolution? How about a story on whether Mitt Romney thinks 911 was an inside job? 9 of the 10 Republican candidates are bought and paid for New World Order puppets. The one that is not? The man who received 15,000+ votes in your debate poll, compared to Romney, McCain and Guiliani who couldn't even muster 1000 votes between them. Stop censoring your poll winner Ron Paul!

Posted by: Action Patriot | May 9, 2007 12:44:17 PM

What about Ron Paul? Why don't you write about how he blew away all of the candidates on the debate?

Posted by: Jeff Santos | May 9, 2007 12:19:55 PM

Why has ABC now disabled comments on the Ron Paul article? The answer is self-evident.

Well, unless you plan to disable comments on all your articles, prepare to be inundated with comments on every article you post.

The sell-out corporate media will not stop us.

CENSORING RON PAUL IS A MISTAKE

Posted by: John | May 9, 2007 11:56:37 AM

ABC, I think you are making a huge mistake in your censorship of Ron Paul.

Posted by: Franz | May 9, 2007 11:38:19 AM

It is due to the censorship and bias created by our mainstream media that a candidate this foolish has any legs to stand on. A truly fair democratic election would be focused on legitimate issues, instead of knee-jerk shinanigans.

Ron Paul for president

Posted by: enyal110 | May 9, 2007 11:08:46 AM

ABC is to the US what Pravda was to the Soviet Union. The minimizing of Ron Paul's sweeping poll victories and smear tactics against him rival the old Soviet Propaganda sheet.

No wonder people are leaving the mainstream media in droves.

Ron Paul for President.

Posted by: ken wagner | May 9, 2007 11:02:10 AM

What do I think? I think ABC is censoring information about Ron Paul. Why do you keep talking about the same five candidates over and over?

The American people are revolting against the mainstream media's agenda to make us think only 5 people are running for president.

ABC published a hit piece on Ron Paul and deleted comments from Ron Paul supporters.

Is that okay with you?

Posted by: Your Conscience | May 9, 2007 2:50:34 AM

How about the guy who won your poll, Ron Paul? Oh ya, you censored him in hopes that people would forget about him and start talking about war monger Mitt Romney!

Posted by: Censor This | May 9, 2007 1:47:28 AM

I agree fully that the republicans shouldn't waste their time on such petty matters, but everybody needs to keep in mind, that these issues are petty to the republican candidates also. They were asked this stupid question, they didn't bring up the subject. I think the Evangelicals are being picky!!! I don't see what the big deal is about basing your vote on evolution, its like saying I'm only going to vote for romney if he beleives in dinosaurs!!! There shouldn't be anything to clear up!! Do I believe in evolution like the ignorant society? No way!! I don't want my origen from a monkey!! Does evolution exist? You Bet it does!!Everything around us demonstrates that it does? The canyons, the camo fish and reptiles for their defense! Do I beleive in God? Yes. I don't have all the answers, but God does, If he can create worlds, I think he can allow evolution in there!! ALSO I don't why people are saying he doesn't share the same values as those at REGENT. IF ROMNEY DOESNT HAVE VALUES AND MORALS I DON'T KNOW WHO DOES! Apparently they don't know the Mormon Church well. They live up to higher principles and standards than 95% of our US Population. They aren't allowed to evan drink TEA or coffee for crying out loud. Some people say he's to perfect to be a president, he has a mask!! I hate to tell ya, but that is who he is!! He has lived up to high standards his whole life, it is a part of him! He share all the values of any true christian out there!! Pat robertson and Billy Graham's son(THEIR LEADERS)see him as a man of faith and principle! Ya they disagree on doctrine, but they know this isn't about that!! They know he's a leader, a man of faith, and he shares the values they do!! If anybody knows about the values evangelicals have it would be Robertson and Graham!!!

Posted by: sammyD | May 8, 2007 8:36:54 PM

Somehow I don't believe any of our presidential candidates are GOD fearing...

Once I'd thought the Iraq War was all about importing high-grade crude (read legal theft--"we" invaded absent ties to terrorism, and "we" built the pesticide plant converted to make Iraq's WMDs); then it seemed the plan was to undermine global stability to drive the price of oil way up; but now, with Giuliani and Thompson looking to be two of the Republican front runners--on their aggressive anti-terror / anti-crime platforms, and with the Democrat frontrunners looking to be two "others" (there's White men and than the others), I'm thinking maybe all along the big plan was to "hand over the presidency" to a great friend of the rich...!!!

Simply consider how our TWO TERM president never actually won a Presidential Election (see the US Commission on Civil Rights report on the 2000 Presidential Election, and the Rolling Stone article, Was the 2004 Election Stolen?)

I agree that true conservatives should hold Governor Romney's feet to the fire, so to speak. Unless and until he's willing in a forthright manner to denounce Charles Darwin as a fraud, he is unfit to be the Republican standard-bearer.

Mr. Romeny has gotten a free pass too often. That closet liberal Pat Robertson let him speak at Regent University despite the fact that he did not fully share the audience's values. These outrages must end.

Posted by: Flat Earth Society | May 8, 2007 4:50:37 PM

I agree wholeheartedly with DKNY. It's beyond a disgrace that, with so many other, more important issues which should be discussed (among them the war in Iraq, terrorism, poverty, taxes, immigration, global warming, and even the price of tea in China), the Repub presidential hopefuls would rather discuss their views on creationism, all the while flailing about, trying to cast themselves as the heir apparent to Ronald ("Ketchup IS a vegetable.")Reagan. It's a pity that the Repubs have to turn the clocks back twenty-plus years to try to distract anyone and everyone from the mess they've created in the present and from the fact that they've no new ideas. Truly pathetic!

Posted by: chuck | May 8, 2007 1:53:22 PM

I think this is what separates Romney from the fringe guys; Romney isn't that far out there. Anyone who disavows evolution would not be viable in a national election for precisely the reasons DKNY articulated. And Romney knows it, hence his nonstatement (I believe in creation AND science!) Talk to the hand, Brody - you're not getting any more than that from Romney.

Posted by: cordelia525 | May 8, 2007 12:11:32 PM

Unfathomable/shocking/mortifying that we are having this discussion in 2007 (and that a Presidential candidate can be taken seriously despite denying evolution!). If, despite the overwhelming evidence that we have evolved, and the absolute absence of evidence that we were divinely created, you still believe in creationism, then you are either stupid or wilfully blind. There's no alternative.
